Per-GPU licensing turns software into a capacity-linked operating cost: each covered GPU adds another entitlement, whether the device is busy or reserved for failover. For NVIDIA AI Enterprise, the published list prices are $4,500 per GPU for one year, $18,000 per GPU for five years, and $22,500 per GPU for a perpetual license with five years of support. Cloud production consumption is listed at $1 per GPU-hour, on top of the cloud provider’s instance costs. Those rates can add hundreds of thousands of dollars to a 100-GPU budget before hardware, cloud compute, or other operating costs are included.

What does per-GPU licensing mean for an AI budget?

With per-GPU licensing, the covered GPU is the unit used to calculate software entitlements. A simple self-managed estimate is GPU count multiplied by the price for the selected license term. That makes software costs grow with the fleet, and it means utilization alone does not determine the bill: a covered GPU can add license expense even when it is idle.

The exact counting rule depends on the product and license. NVIDIA says AI Enterprise is licensed per GPU. Its cloud guidance also distinguishes a cloud instance with a GPU, counted by GPU, from a GPU-less instance, counted per instance. Do not assume that another vendor, product, cloud contract, or license type uses the same meter.

For budget planning, begin with the number of GPUs that will be covered—not just the number expected to run production jobs. Consider production, development and test, reserve or failover capacity, and growth headroom. Confirm with the applicable agreement or channel partner how the license treats powered-off, standby, reassigned, and bundled GPUs; the published per-GPU rate alone does not establish every entitlement rule.

How much does NVIDIA AI Enterprise add per GPU?

NVIDIA’s published pricing guide lists three self-managed term choices and a separate production-cloud consumption rate. These are list or stated rates, not a guarantee of the price in a specific quote.

License option Published price What the stated price includes
One-year subscription $4,500 per GPU One year of subscription licensing
Five-year subscription $18,000 per GPU Five-year subscription term
Perpetual license $22,500 per GPU Perpetual license with five years of support
Production cloud consumption $1 per GPU-hour, plus cloud provider instance costs Variable license consumption; compute is charged separately by the cloud provider

The five-year subscription is priced at the equivalent of four years at the one-year list rate: $18,000 versus $22,500 for five one-year terms. That arithmetic is useful for comparing list prices, but it does not establish which customers qualify for the five-year price or what a partner quote will be. Check the term, eligibility, renewal conditions, and support scope in the actual offer.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The perpetual option has a higher upfront license price than the five-year subscription and explicitly includes five years of support. The published figure does not specify the cost or terms of support after that period, so do not treat the initial price as a forecast of all future support expense.

What would licensing cost for a 100-GPU fleet?

Multiplying the published per-GPU figures by 100 gives the following license-only totals. They exclude hardware, optional support upgrades, taxes, and any other infrastructure or operating costs.

100-GPU scenario Calculation License cost
One-year subscription 100 × $4,500 $450,000 for one year
Five-year subscription 100 × $18,000 $1,800,000 for five years
Perpetual license with five years of support 100 × $22,500 $2,250,000 upfront, with five years of support included
Production cloud license at continuous use 100 GPUs × 8,760 hours × $1 $876,000 for 8,760 hours per GPU, before cloud instance costs

The cloud calculation uses 8,760 hours per year (365 × 24) and assumes all 100 GPUs consume the production license continuously for that entire period. It is a license-cost calculation, not the total cost of renting the GPUs. The cloud instance bill, and potentially storage, networking, and other charges, sit on top.

These totals show why the license term and deployment pattern should be decided alongside capacity. For example, the one-year subscription gives a lower initial commitment than the five-year or perpetual list-price options, while a longer term changes total commitment and renewal exposure. Which option is less expensive over the period you actually need depends on the quote, eligible terms, covered GPU count, and support requirements.

Is per-GPU licensing cheaper than renting GPUs in the cloud?

The published license rates alone cannot answer that. A cloud license charge is only one part of the cloud bill; compare it with the full cost of owning and operating equivalent infrastructure, not with a hardware purchase price or license rate in isolation.

One limited screening comparison is possible for the license component. At $1 per GPU-hour, 4,500 cloud GPU-hours cost $4,500—the one-year self-managed subscription list price for one GPU. Over 8,760 hours in a 365-day year, that is about 51.4% utilization. Below that level, the cloud license component alone is lower than $4,500 per GPU; above it, it is higher. This is not a deployment break-even point because it leaves out cloud compute and other costs as well as the costs of operating owned hardware.

A decision-quality comparison should put the following in the same time period and make the assumptions visible:

  • License meter: physical GPU, GPU-hour, instance, or—where applicable—concurrent user.
  • Utilization pattern: steady production, intermittent training, bursty experiments, and periods when capacity sits idle.
  • Cloud charges: instance compute plus relevant storage, networking, and egress charges.
  • Owned-infrastructure costs: hardware depreciation, power, cooling, networking, storage, staffing, patching, and operations.
  • Contract and support: license term, renewal exposure, included support, and any paid support upgrade.
  • Resilience and growth: standby or failover capacity and GPUs reserved for expected expansion.

Cloud consumption can align license expense with the hours GPUs are used, but it also adds a variable charge to the provider’s compute bill. A self-managed subscription may make software cost more predictable over its term, but the license count can still rise with covered capacity. Hybrid fleets need both sides of the comparison: cloud GPU-hour consumption and the applicable license treatment for self-managed or cloud BYOL capacity.

Do standby, development, and failover GPUs need licenses?

Budget for every GPU that the applicable agreement treats as covered, including non-production capacity if it falls within that definition. The per-GPU pricing model means that spare capacity can affect the estimate even when it is rarely used. The published information here does not establish a general exemption for idle, standby, or failover GPUs, so verify the rule before treating those devices as unlicensed.

Build a coverage inventory that separates:

  • Production GPUs running inference or training workloads.
  • Development and test GPUs used for experimentation or validation.
  • Reserve, failover, or disaster-recovery GPUs.
  • Growth capacity purchased before it is routinely used.
  • GPUs attached to cloud instances, including instances obtained through a cloud provider.

For cloud deployments, distinguish a production consumption arrangement from bring-your-own-license (BYOL). NVIDIA’s stated cloud BYOL counting rule is per GPU, while a GPU-less instance is counted per instance. The applicable agreement still determines which resources need entitlements and how they may be assigned; do not infer transfer or standby rights from the metering unit.

There is a possible exception to the normal upfront software estimate: selected H100 PCIe, H200 NVL, and A800 40GB Active GPUs are described as including multi-year AI Enterprise subscriptions. That may reduce initial software cash cost for an eligible card, but the entitlement and activation are tied to the shipped GPU. Confirm the exact card, included term, and activation conditions with the seller before removing licenses from a budget.

What does NVIDIA AI Enterprise include, and what costs extra?

NVIDIA describes AI Enterprise as a stack that includes infrastructure components such as GPU drivers, Kubernetes operators, NVIDIA Container Toolkit, Run:ai, and cluster-management tools. Business Standard support is included; Business Critical 24/7 support and a Technical Account Manager are add-ons.

That breadth matters when comparing a license with a narrower software entitlement: the relevant question is not only “what is the price per GPU?” but also “which products and support services would we otherwise need to source and operate?” At the same time, an included component does not eliminate the cost of hardware, cloud instances, storage, network capacity, or the staff needed to run the environment.

Keep software rights separate by category. NVIDIA’s licensing overview distinguishes free and community software from paid enterprise products, and says CUDA, cuDNN, and other SDKs have separate agreements. NIM runtime licensing also does not grant rights to the underlying model; model terms must be reviewed separately. A free SDK or community component therefore should not be treated as proof that an enterprise runtime entitlement—or a model license—is included.

Which AI software is free, and which requires an enterprise license?

NVIDIA states that most of its software is available for free, including under open-source licenses, while also offering paid enterprise products. “Free” is not a single licensing category: open-source, community, SDK, enterprise runtime, and model permissions can have different terms and uses.

Before labeling an AI stack free or paid, inventory the exact components and check the agreement that governs each one. In particular, separate:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Open-source or community components and the conditions attached to their licenses.
  • SDKs such as CUDA and cuDNN, which have separate agreements.
  • Enterprise software and runtime entitlements, which may be charged per GPU or by another unit.
  • Foundation or other underlying models, whose terms are not supplied by a runtime license.

This prevents a common budgeting error: counting a free development tool as if it covered production deployment, or assuming a paid runtime license grants rights to use any model with it.

How does concurrent-user licensing differ from per-GPU licensing?

Not every GPU-related software product is metered per GPU. NVIDIA vGPU enterprise products provide a useful contrast: a 2024 guide lists Virtual Applications at $10 per concurrent user per year and Virtual PC at $50 per concurrent user per year. Those figures apply to the products and guide cited, not to AI Enterprise.

License model Budgeting unit What to estimate
Per-GPU Covered GPU Number of covered GPUs multiplied by the applicable term price
Cloud GPU consumption GPU-hour Consumed GPU-hours multiplied by the hourly license rate, plus cloud infrastructure
Concurrent-user vGPU example Simultaneous user Expected peak concurrent users multiplied by the applicable annual user price

For a virtual-desktop deployment, peak simultaneous users—not simply the number of GPUs—are the relevant quantity for a concurrent-user price. For AI Enterprise, by contrast, its stated per-GPU model makes covered GPU count central. Applying the wrong meter can overstate or understate a budget before any vendor quote is considered.

What should a per-GPU licensing budget include?

Use a scenario model rather than multiplying only the production GPU count by a list price. A useful estimate separates license charges from all other infrastructure costs and makes utilization and fleet changes explicit.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Count capacity by environment. List production, development, test, reserve, failover, and planned growth GPUs separately.
  2. Identify the license unit for each environment. Distinguish per-GPU terms, GPU-hour consumption, BYOL, and any instance- or user-based license.
  3. Price the likely terms. Compare one-year, five-year, and perpetual choices using the actual quote and note which support period is included.
  4. Model cloud hours. Estimate GPU-hours for production and burst workloads, then add the cloud provider’s instance and other applicable charges.
  5. Check bundle eligibility. Confirm whether any selected H100 PCIe, H200 NVL, or A800 40GB Active GPU includes an eligible subscription, and document its activation and term constraints.
  6. Separate adjacent rights and costs. Account for optional support, separate SDK agreements, model licensing, hardware, power, cooling, storage, networking, and operations where applicable.
  7. Stress-test changes. Recalculate for added GPUs, lower utilization, higher reserve capacity, and term renewal instead of relying on a single steady-state estimate.

Reported discussion of approximately $2,000 per GPU per year for agent software is not a confirmed replacement for the published AI Enterprise price list: the report did not establish the covered products or terms, and NVIDIA had not confirmed them. Do not use that reported figure as a procurement rate without a confirmed offer.

Published rates, included products, cloud charges, support policies, and eligibility can change. Partner quotes, private offers, taxes, discounts, hardware bundles, and regional terms may differ from list prices or stated marketplace rates. Recheck the current pricing guide and applicable license agreement before committing funds.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can a per-GPU license be moved to a replacement GPU?

The published per-GPU price does not establish reassignment or transfer rights. Check the applicable license agreement or get written confirmation from the channel partner before assuming a replacement card can use the same entitlement.

Does a five-year subscription guarantee the same price for the next term?

No future renewal price is established by the published five-year figure. Treat it as the listed price for that stated term, and ask the seller to document any renewal pricing or price-protection terms in the quote.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can a cloud provider’s private offer change the license calculation?

A private offer or regional quote may differ from published list or marketplace rates. Compare the quote’s metering unit, covered products, support, and term rather than assuming the public rate applies unchanged.
