An AI agent can access only what the operating-system boundary, runtime configuration, and granted permissions allow its executing process to reach. A properly enforced sandbox can limit files, network destinations, hardware, and other processes, but a folder named “workspace” or an approval prompt is not automatically a security boundary. The practical answer depends on where the agent runs, which component executes its commands, what is mounted or shared, and whether network access is enabled. macOS App Sandbox provides a concrete kernel-enforced example; other agent runtimes may use containers, remote workers, policy controls, or no OS confinement at all. Treat sandboxing as damage reduction and least privilege—not proof that the agent, its tools, or its surrounding services are vulnerability-free.

What does an OS-level sandbox actually limit?

An OS-level sandbox mediates a process’s attempts to use protected resources. The operating system checks each access against a policy, then allows or denies it. Depending on the platform, that policy can cover filesystem paths, network sockets, hardware devices, inter-process actions, and access to other applications.

Apple describes macOS App Sandbox as “an access control technology that macOS provides and enforces at the kernel level.” A sandboxed application normally works inside its own container. Access beyond that container requires declared capabilities, user-selected access, or other operating-system permissions. The same principle applies to an agent only when the process executing the agent’s commands is actually inside an enforced boundary.

For an AI agent, identify the real execution process: it might be a shell, code interpreter, tool runner, browser worker, or a remote executor. The model that proposes an action and the process that performs it may run in different environments, with different permissions.

Can an AI agent read or change my files?

Only if the executing process has a permitted path to them. “Can the agent access my files?” therefore has three separate answers: what the sandbox policy permits, what the operating system’s ordinary permissions permit, and what the product deliberately mounts or exposes.

macOS App Sandbox

A sandboxed macOS app has read/write access to its own container. Access to standard folders, individual files chosen by the user, or another app’s container must be enabled through entitlements, user selection, and macOS access controls. Full Disk Access is a separate user grant in System Settings; being sandboxed does not silently provide it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Even when an entitlement appears to allow an operation, the operation can still fail because of POSIX permissions, access-control lists, System Integrity Protection, or data-protection rules. “The sandbox allows this path” and “the file operation succeeds” are not equivalent statements.

Product-specific local defaults

Current Codex local security guidance describes default writes as limited to the active workspace, with approval required for some actions outside that boundary. That is a product configuration, not a universal property of operating-system sandboxes. A different mode, version, operating system, or administrator policy can change the result.

Mounted data and shared directories

In an agent environment, files can become visible because they are mounted, copied into a workspace, attached through a tool, or returned by a separate service. Audit those data paths rather than assuming that “outside the workspace” means inaccessible. A process may be unable to open the host’s home directory while still seeing a project directory intentionally mounted into its environment.

Does sandboxing block internet access?

Filesystem isolation and network isolation are separate controls. An agent can be unable to read a host file yet still make outbound requests, or it can have local files while having no network route at all.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Codex local CLI/IDE guidance describes network access as off by default. When network access is enabled, the deployment should state which process makes the connection and which destinations are allowed. OpenAI’s agent-environment guidance recommends outbound allowlists rather than unrestricted egress.

Tool connections can originate from different places. An executor-side MCP connection runs from the execution environment, while a remote MCP connection runs from the remote service’s environment. The network policy, available credentials, source IP, and data exposure can therefore differ even when the model invokes the same tool name.

Questions to answer for every deployment

  • Is there a route to the public internet, an internal network, or neither?
  • Is egress denied by default, or merely discouraged by a prompt?
  • Can administrators allowlist hostnames, IP ranges, ports, or protocols?
  • Which component makes DNS lookups and outbound connections?
  • Can the agent send data to a tool, package registry, webhook, or remote model service?

What other resources can a sandbox restrict?

Operating-system policies can cover more than files and sockets. macOS App Sandbox uses entitlements for resources such as network access, hardware capabilities, and app data. Apple lists activities incompatible with the sandbox, including sending Apple Events to arbitrary apps, loading kernel extensions, changing network settings, and terminating other running applications. These are macOS examples, not a universal cross-platform checklist.

On another operating system, the enforcement mechanism may be a container, namespace, mandatory-access-control policy, virtual machine, or a combination. The label “sandbox” does not identify one fixed strength of isolation. Ask which mechanism is active and what it covers.

Is a workspace directory a real security boundary?

Not by itself. The OpenAI Agents SDK documentation for its Unix-local Linux backend explicitly says that it adds no OS-level confinement. Setting a working directory, HOME variable, or current directory changes process context, but does not prevent the process from opening other host paths when ordinary permissions allow it.

This distinction matters in local development. A command such as cd project does not revoke access to /etc, another user’s readable files, device nodes, or network interfaces. A wrapper that merely changes environment variables should be described as a convenience or policy layer, not as isolation.

To claim a genuine boundary, document the mechanism that enforces it: for example, a kernel policy, container boundary, virtual machine, or managed remote executor. Also document mounts, user identity, capabilities, devices, and network routes. If those details are absent, treat the workspace as an organizational convention.

How do hosted agent sandboxes differ from local execution?

A hosted agent sandbox can place model-directed work in an isolated Unix-like environment with files, commands, packages, mounted data, exposed ports, snapshots, and controlled external access. That description applies to a particular managed environment; it should not be generalized to every product that uses the word sandbox.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Local and hosted execution differ in where the boundary sits and who operates it. A local process may share the user’s kernel and identity. A hosted worker may run on separate infrastructure with a defined workspace and reset behavior. Neither description alone proves safety: local confinement depends on the selected backend and policy, while hosted confinement depends on mounts, tools, credentials, and egress settings.

Control to compare Questions to verify Why it matters
Filesystem Which paths are readable, writable, or mounted? Is access enforced by the OS? Prevents sensitive files from becoming tool input or agent output.
Network egress Is it off by default? Are destinations allowlisted? Which process connects? Limits data exfiltration, downloads, callbacks, and supply-chain exposure.
Credentials Are tokens in the model-directed process or a separate trusted service? Reduces the impact of prompt injection, tool misuse, or command compromise.
Process and hardware access Can the agent signal other processes, access devices, or alter system settings? Determines whether a compromised tool can affect the host.
Enforcement mechanism Which kernel, container, VM, or managed boundary is active on this platform? Separates enforceable restrictions from conventions and prompts.
Operational compatibility Which packages, ports, mounts, and host features must remain available? Prevents a security policy from silently breaking required work.

Available official documentation describes mechanisms and recommendations, not head-to-head escape-rate or incident-prevention benchmarks. Compare documented controls and observed deployment behavior rather than declaring one option categorically safer.

How should trusted control functions be separated?

Keep orchestration, authentication, audit, and human review in a trusted harness when the workflow warrants it. Let the sandbox handle model-directed execution, while sensitive control-plane functions remain outside the compute area that processes untrusted instructions or tool output.

Why credential placement matters

If a long-lived API key, cloud role, or signing credential is directly available to the command-running process, a malicious instruction or compromised dependency may be able to use it. A separate service can perform a narrowly defined operation without exposing the underlying secret to the agent’s shell. This is an architectural recommendation, not a guarantee against every compromise.

Map every component

  • Model: proposes actions and interprets tool results.
  • Harness: applies approvals, authentication, logging, and policy.
  • Executor: runs shell commands, code, or tools inside the selected boundary.
  • Credential service: retains secrets or exchanges them for narrowly scoped results.
  • Remote tools: may execute outside the sandbox and have their own network and data controls.

Do not infer that all of these components share one sandbox merely because the user sees one chat or command interface.

How can I audit what an agent can access?

Use an access map before enabling tools or sensitive data. The following sequence exposes the boundary and its exceptions.

  1. Identify the executor. Record the exact process, user identity, operating system, runtime, backend, and version that runs model-directed commands.
  2. List filesystem exposure. Record the working directory, mounted directories, temporary locations, shared sockets, device files, and any user-selected files. Mark each path read-only or writable.
  3. Check enforcement. Confirm whether a kernel policy, container, virtual machine, or managed worker enforces those limits. A changed HOME or current directory alone is not sufficient.
  4. Trace network routes. Determine whether DNS and outbound connections are possible, which destinations are allowlisted, and whether a remote tool connects from another environment.
  5. Inventory credentials. Find environment variables, mounted secret files, agent configuration, credential helpers, and tokens reachable by child processes.
  6. Review approval behavior. Separate actions blocked by the OS from actions that merely require a user prompt. A user can approve a risky operation; an enforced deny cannot be bypassed by clicking.
  7. Test failure paths safely. Use harmless probe files, denied destinations, and non-sensitive commands to verify that the documented policy produces the expected denial and audit event.
  8. Define recovery. Know how to revoke tokens, remove mounts, disable network access, terminate the executor, and restore a clean snapshot.

What does sandboxing not prove?

  • It does not prove the application is vulnerability-free. Apple states that App Sandbox limits harm if an app is compromised; it does not prevent attacks against the app.
  • It does not prove every component is isolated. A harness, remote service, credential store, and executor can run in separate places with separate policies.
  • It does not prove local mode is confined. The Unix-local Linux backend documented for the Agents SDK is an explicit example with no OS-level confinement.
  • It does not provide a universal risk percentage. The relevant official documentation explains controls and design goals, but does not publish a comparable rate of prevented incidents or sandbox escapes.

Use the boundary to reduce blast radius, then add least-privilege credentials, review of tool inputs and outputs, logging, patching, and a recovery plan. Sandboxing is one layer in that design.

What is the practical answer for a personal computer?

Assume the agent can reach everything its actual executor can reach until you verify otherwise. On macOS, inspect App Sandbox entitlements, user-selected file grants, Full Disk Access, and ordinary file permissions. In a local agent product, inspect the documented write scope, approval rules, network default, and selected backend. In a hosted environment, inspect mounts, snapshots, exposed ports, egress policy, and the location of remote tools.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Keep sensitive documents out of mounted workspaces, deny network access unless a task requires it, prefer short-lived credentials held outside the executor, and treat any local backend that lacks OS confinement as unsandboxed for threat-modeling purposes.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can an AI agent escape a sandbox?

A sandbox can contain many actions, but no documentation here supplies a universal escape rate or guarantee. The outcome depends on the operating-system mechanism, its configuration, vulnerabilities, mounted resources, and whether another component outside the boundary has the requested access.

Does approving a command give the agent full computer access?

Approval authorizes the particular action allowed by the product’s policy; it does not automatically grant every filesystem, network, or hardware capability. However, approving a command that runs outside an enforced boundary can expose whatever the underlying user and process can already reach.

Where should API keys be stored when an agent runs code?

Prefer a trusted service or harness that performs narrowly defined operations, rather than placing long-lived secrets in the model-directed shell or mounted workspace. Scope tokens to the minimum resources and revoke them when the run ends.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How can I tell whether a Linux agent is truly sandboxed?

Ask for the concrete confinement mechanism and inspect mounts, identity, capabilities, devices, and network routes. A changed working directory, HOME variable, or workspace path is not OS-level confinement by itself.
