AI glasses put small speakers in their temple arms and direct sound toward your ears without sealing your ear canals. You can hear the glasses and the surrounding room at once, but the sound is not guaranteed to stay private: people nearby may hear it, particularly when the volume is high, the room is quiet, they are close, or the frames sit away from your ears.

How do speakers in AI-glasses arms work?

Open-ear audio glasses use tiny speakers built into the arms of the frame. Rather than sending sound through a sealed earbud, the speakers direct it through the air toward the wearer’s ears, usually from above and close to the ear canal. Analog Devices engineer Ryan Boyle describes open-ear devices as products that “don’t block or cover the ears.” That open path is the key to both the experience and its privacy trade-off.

Because the ear is not covered, outside sound can reach you while audio plays. Traffic, coworkers, doorbells and announcements remain audible instead of being screened by an earbud seal. You can also speak without an earbud plugging your ears, which can make calls and voice-assistant interactions feel more natural.

The same lack of a seal means some speaker output can travel into the surrounding space. A sealed earbud confines more of its output near the ear; an open speaker does not have that physical barrier. In addition, open-ear designs generally have weaker bass and less immersion than sealed earbuds. Those are design characteristics, not defects that a privacy setting can always remove.

Is this bone-conduction audio?

The described systems use air conduction: speakers send sound through the air toward the ear canal. HTC’s explanation of VIVE Eagle specifically calls its approach directional air conduction. Do not assume that a pair of glasses is using bone conduction simply because its speakers do not sit inside the ear.

Can people hear what my AI glasses are playing?

Yes, they may be able to. Sound leakage is a normal possibility with open-ear speakers, although how noticeable it is depends on the particular design and listening conditions. “Open-ear” describes how the wearer hears audio; it does not mean that the audio is inaudible to everyone else.

Leakage is more likely to be noticeable when the volume is turned up, the space is quiet, another person is nearby, or the glasses sit farther from the ears. In a noisy place, outside sound can compete with the glasses, tempting the wearer to raise the volume. That may make the glasses easier for people nearby to hear too. Fit matters: moving the speakers away from the ear can reduce the amount of sound reaching the wearer and make more of the output audible around them.

A Xiaomi Mijia Smart Audio Glasses review reports clearly audible leakage in quiet environments. It also says the model’s privacy mode reduces leakage without eliminating it. That example illustrates why a mode or a manufacturer’s leakage claim should be treated as a reduction, not a promise of secrecy.

What does the reported leakage figure mean?

HTC’s 2026 newsroom explanation reports an NTT test in which music played at 80 dB measured 43 dB at a distance of 15 cm. This is a vendor-reported result associated with the described technology, not a universal measurement for AI glasses. The available data does not establish that every frame, fit, audio track, room or volume setting will produce that result, so it is not a reliable prediction of what a nearby person will hear in a different situation.

How do directional speakers and cancellation reduce leakage?

Speaker direction and acoustic cancellation can make open-ear audio less audible outside the intended listening area, but they cannot turn an open system into a sealed one. HTC describes VIVE Eagle as using drivers close to the ear canal and acoustic dipole cancellation. In HTC’s account, a forward pressure wave reaches the wearer first, while a shaped rear wave cancels more sound in the surrounding field.

That is HTC’s explanation of its design, not a description that should be assumed to apply equally to all open-ear glasses. The result also does not mean that sound disappears in every direction or at every volume. The practical takeaway is narrower: directional design and cancellation are techniques for minimizing leakage, not proof that a conversation or song cannot be overheard.

Can I hear traffic and other sounds while using AI glasses?

Usually, that is one of the main reasons to choose an open-ear design: the frame does not cover the ears, so ambient sound can remain audible during playback. This can help you stay aware of traffic, colleagues, doorbells and public announcements while listening to prompts, calls or other audio.

Ambient awareness is not the same as guaranteed safety or perfect awareness. The available evidence establishes that open-ear audio leaves the ears uncovered; it does not establish that every sound will be easy to hear in every environment or at every playback volume. If outside sound is important, keep the playback low enough that it does not compete with what you need to hear. Open-ear glasses do not remove the need to pay attention to your surroundings.

What is open-ear audio best for—and where does it fall short?

Open-ear glasses are particularly suited to audio that benefits from quick, comfortable access without blocking the ear: speech, calls, podcasts, navigation prompts and translation. They can be less satisfying when a listener wants strong bass or an immersive sound field, because there is no sealed earbud fit to reinforce bass or isolate the listener.

Listening need What open-ear glasses offer Trade-off to consider
Calls and voice assistants The ears remain uncovered, and the wearer can speak without a plugged-ear sensation. Nearby people may hear audio; microphone and wind handling vary by model and should be checked separately.
Navigation and translation prompts Short spoken cues can play while ambient sound remains accessible. In a noisy place, outside sound can compete with playback, and raising volume can increase leakage.
Podcasts and spoken audio Speech is a natural fit for the format. Private listening is not assured, especially at close range or in quiet surroundings.
Bass-heavy music or immersion Audio is available without covering the ears. Bass and immersion are generally weaker than with sealed earbuds.
Awareness of the room Traffic, coworkers, doorbells and announcements are not blocked by an ear seal. Uncovered ears do not guarantee that important external sounds will be audible over playback.

Are open-ear glasses private enough for an office?

Do not treat them as reliably private in a quiet office. A coworker nearby may hear audio, and a privacy mode—where available—can reduce leakage without necessarily eliminating it. For sensitive calls or material, assume that someone close could overhear rather than relying on the open-ear design to keep the sound to yourself.

There is a trade-off between hearing the room and limiting who else hears the glasses. Lower volume can help reduce leakage, but in a noisy room it may also make the glasses harder for you to hear. If the content needs to remain confidential, an open speaker is the wrong privacy assumption; choose a listening method that better contains the sound or move to a private setting.

How should I compare open-ear smart glasses?

Look beyond the phrase “open-ear.” It describes the broad listening approach, not the degree of leakage, call quality or fit you will get from an individual frame. The following checks are useful because they affect either how well audio reaches you or how it behaves around other people.

  • Leakage controls: Check whether the manufacturer describes directional audio or a privacy mode, and distinguish “reduces leakage” from a guarantee that sound cannot be heard.
  • Ambient awareness: Consider whether you need to hear traffic, coworkers, doorbells or announcements while audio plays.
  • Speech and bass: Decide whether your main use is speech, calls and prompts or music where bass and immersion matter more.
  • Fit and speaker position: Frames that sit farther from the ears can lose energy at the listener’s ear and make the output easier for others to hear.
  • Microphones and wind handling: These are separate from the speaker design and matter if calls or voice commands are a priority.
  • Battery and charging: Compare the maker’s playback and standby claims, while noting that they describe different conditions.
  • Water and dust protection: Check the specific model’s stated protection rather than inferring it from the frame’s appearance.
  • Assistant and translation support: Confirm which features the model actually supports; translation is not a general consequence of open-ear audio.
  • Prescription lenses: Check compatibility and fitting options. Since fit affects the speakers’ distance from the ears, lens suitability and acoustic positioning are related practical considerations.

What does HTC say VIVE Eagle offers?

HTC’s official VIVE Eagle product page lists open-ear audio, a starting weight of 48.5 g, up to 4.5 hours of continuous music playback and more than 36 hours of standby. Those are manufacturer specifications, not independent measurements or guarantees for every use pattern. Continuous music playback and standby are different operating conditions, so the figures should not be read as a single combined runtime.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The product page also describes Listening Mode, which translates selected languages through the open-ear speakers. This is a model-specific feature claim, not a feature that follows automatically from having open-ear speakers. HTC describes its sound as spatial and tuned to minimize leakage; that statement describes the maker’s intent and design, not a promise of private listening.

What should I do if the glasses are hard to hear or leak too much?

Start with fit and volume rather than assuming the frame is defective. A change in how the arms sit relative to your ears can alter how much sound reaches you, and increasing volume in a noisy place can increase leakage. Use these checks to identify whether the problem is comfort, audibility or privacy.

  1. Check the position: Wear the frame as intended and see whether the speakers sit close to your ears. If the frame is sitting farther away, the audio may reach you less effectively.
  2. Reduce competing noise where practical: If the room is loud, move somewhere quieter rather than simply raising the volume. This can make prompts easier to hear without increasing playback unnecessarily.
  3. Lower playback for shared spaces: Try a lower setting in a quiet office or around other people. If you still need the content to remain confidential, do not rely on lowering volume alone.
  4. Use a privacy feature if the model has one: Treat it as leakage reduction, not soundproofing. The Xiaomi review’s reported privacy mode, for example, reduced leakage but did not eliminate it.
  5. Reconsider the listening method for sensitive audio: Open-ear speakers leave the ear uncovered and can be heard by others. Use a more contained listening arrangement or a private location when overhearing would matter.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do AI glasses need an internet connection to play audio?

The available product information establishes that the glasses have speakers, but it does not specify whether basic playback requires an internet connection. Connection needs depend on the model and on whether the audio source or feature—such as translation—requires network access.

Can people hear my AI-glasses microphone during a call?

The leakage discussed here concerns sound coming out of the speakers, not sound captured by the microphones. Microphone pickup and who can hear your voice are separate questions; check the model’s microphone and call behavior rather than inferring it from speaker design.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does a privacy mode make open-ear glasses safe for confidential calls?

A privacy mode may reduce sound leakage, but the Xiaomi example reports that it does not eliminate it. The evidence here does not establish that any privacy mode makes confidential calls inaudible to people nearby.

Do translation features come with all open-ear glasses?

No general translation capability follows from the speaker type. HTC lists Listening Mode for VIVE Eagle, including translation of selected languages; language support and availability are specific to the product.
