On-device visual search can analyze image pixels on your phone, turn what it finds into a compact query, and search for a match without uploading the original photo or screenshot. But “on-device” does not always mean “offline” or “nothing leaves the device”: some systems send a derived, sometimes encrypted representation to a remote index. Apple’s Enhanced Visual Search in Photos is one documented example. It searches a photo library for landmarks without sending the original photos or videos to Apple, while sending an encrypted embedding for matching.

What does “on-device visual search” mean?

It means that at least one image-analysis step runs on the device. A model can inspect pixels locally and identify likely objects, text, faces, barcodes, subjects, or places. The resulting information can be used to find or describe content. That alone does not tell you whether the complete search is local: the next step might compare the result with an index on the device, send a label or embedding to a server, or upload image pixels to a service.

The phrase is therefore about where computation happens, not a universal privacy guarantee. To understand a feature, ask two separate questions: what is analyzed locally, and what data—if any—is sent elsewhere to find a result?

A typical visual-search pipeline

  1. Get the image. The app or operating system receives pixels from a photo, a live camera view, or a screenshot. These inputs are not interchangeable: a feature designed to search a photo library may not search screenshots, and a camera-search feature may work differently again.
  2. Analyze the pixels. A local model detects or classifies visual content. It may locate an object, recognize text, or identify a region likely to contain something relevant.
  3. Build a query. The system represents the useful information as a label, selected crop, set of detections, or mathematical embedding. An embedding is a numerical representation intended to capture relevant visual features; it is not the original image.
  4. Find a match. The query is compared with an index. That index may be stored locally, held on a remote server, or split between the device and server.
  5. Return and display results. The device presents matches, descriptions, or other results. In privacy-sensitive designs, it may also handle decryption locally.

The boundaries between these stages vary by product. A local detector can be just the first stage of a cloud search, so the claim “the AI runs on your phone” is not enough to establish that the search stays on your phone.

How does Apple search Photos for landmarks without uploading the original image?

Apple’s Enhanced Visual Search is a specific example for finding landmarks or points of interest in a Photos library. Apple Support says that an on-device machine-learning model first determines whether a photo or video is likely to contain a landmark. The original photo or video is not sent to Apple for this lookup, but the lookup is not wholly offline: the device creates and sends a protected representation for matching against Apple’s global index.

What happens to the image and the query?

After the local model identifies a likely place, the device makes a low-fidelity mathematical representation, called an embedding, from the relevant region. The device encrypts that embedding and sends it to Apple’s servers to be matched against a global index too large to fit on the device. Apple says the device keeps the decryption keys and decrypts returned search results locally. The request is not stored after results are returned and is not linked to an Apple Account or device, according to Apple’s description.

Apple Support’s statement that the feature works “without sending your photos or videos to Apple” describes the original media, not the absence of a server request. The distinction matters: an encrypted embedding is sent for the remote match, even though the photo or video itself is not. It would be inaccurate to describe this particular feature as a completely offline search.

Which privacy protections does Apple describe?

Apple describes several measures for this lookup. These are claims about Apple’s implementation, not guarantees that apply to every app using visual search.

  • Homomorphic encryption: Apple says the server can perform matching on encrypted data without decrypting the embedding. The device retains the decryption key, so Apple’s servers cannot decrypt the embedding or returned results, according to Apple’s technical explanation.
  • Differential privacy and fake requests: Apple says the device adds fake requests alongside the genuine request, making it harder to identify which request corresponds to the user’s embedding.
  • Oblivious HTTP (OHTTP) relay: Apple says a third-party relay hides the device’s IP address before the request reaches Apple. This is intended to make it harder to associate the request with a user, device, or earlier requests.

Apple’s Machine Learning Research article, published October 24, 2024, explains the technical context for its use of homomorphic encryption. The safeguards should be understood as design measures Apple describes for this feature; they do not establish how another company handles its requests, logs, accounts, or network metadata.

Does on-device analysis mean no data leaves the phone?

No. It means some analysis happens locally. A product may still send a query derived from the image to a remote service, and a different product may send selected image regions or the original pixels. The key is to trace the data after the local model has finished its work.

What to check in a visual-search feature

  • Local analysis: Which work takes place on the device—object detection, classification, text recognition, or embedding generation?
  • Query contents: Does the next step send a label, detections, a crop, an embedding, or the original image? “Image data is processed on-device” does not answer this by itself.
  • Index location: Is the searchable collection stored on the phone, or does the feature need a remote index?
  • Request protections: If there is a server lookup, what encryption or metadata protections does the provider describe?
  • Linkability and controls: Does the provider say whether requests are associated with an account, device, or IP address? Can the feature be disabled?
  • Offline behavior: Can it return useful matches with the network disconnected, or does it need a remote index?

Answers should come from documentation for the exact feature or app, not from a general statement about its operating system or machine-learning toolkit. An app developer can combine local analysis with a backend even when the toolkit itself performs its model work on-device.

How do Apple and Google’s developer examples differ?

Apple’s Photos feature and Google’s ML Kit documentation illustrate different parts of the design space; they are not equivalent consumer search services. Apple describes a particular photo-library landmark search with an encrypted embedding sent to a remote index. Google describes a developer toolkit for local detection that can be used as the frontend of a separate visual-search system.

Example What runs locally What may happen next What the example establishes
Apple Enhanced Visual Search in Photos A model checks for likely landmarks; the device creates an embedding from the relevant region. The encrypted embedding is sent for matching against Apple’s global index; the device decrypts returned results. Apple’s described design does not send the original photos or videos for this lookup. It does use a remote request.
Google ML Kit object detection Object detection and tracking, including coarse classification, can run on-device. A developer may send selected detections to a cloud backend for visual search. Local detection does not determine the end-to-end data flow of an app built with the toolkit.

Google’s ML Kit privacy documentation says API input processing and outputs happen on-device and are not sent to Google servers. It also says APIs may contact Google servers for bug fixes, updated models, and compatibility information. That statement concerns the SDK’s processing; an app’s own backend and overall architecture are separate questions.

What can a local detector recognize?

Google’s Android object-detection guidance says its detector can identify up to five objects in an image and return their locations. Detection depends on the visual complexity of the image and how prominent the subject is. That is a documented capability, not a promise that every image will be recognized correctly or that a result will be useful for searching.

Apple’s Vision framework offers local image-analysis capabilities including text recognition, barcode and QR-code detection, face detection, subject isolation, image classification, and visual-similarity measurement. VisionKit provides interfaces for interacting with recognized content and image subjects. These tools can supply signals for a search, but their existence does not establish what an app transmits after analysis.

Can visual search work offline?

Sometimes, but not necessarily. A feature can analyze an image locally while relying on a remote index to find matching places or products. Apple’s documented Enhanced Visual Search uses a global server-side index, so its landmark lookup includes a network request. A developer can also choose a local index or a remote backend when building with an on-device detection toolkit.

To judge offline support, distinguish the ability to run the model from the ability to complete the search. If there is no network connection, local detection may still identify or classify visual content, while a remote match may be unavailable. Whether an app caches results or offers a local fallback depends on that product’s implementation; the cited examples do not establish universal offline behavior.

What should you know about screenshots specifically?

The available examples do not establish a universal screenshot-search feature. Apple’s example concerns landmark lookup in photos and videos in a Photos library, while Google’s materials describe an object-detection toolkit and possible developer-built search pipelines. A screenshot may be usable by a particular app, but you should not assume it is included in a photo-library feature or processed under the same rules.

If a feature accepts screenshots, check its own privacy and data-use documentation for the screenshot workflow. Look for whether the screenshot is analyzed locally, whether a crop or embedding is sent, which service receives a request, and whether the app offers a setting to disable the feature. The term “visual search” by itself does not answer any of those questions.

How can you control Apple’s Enhanced Visual Search?

Apple says Enhanced Visual Search can be switched off in Photos settings on iPhone and iPad, and in Photos settings on Mac. The exact path and wording can vary by operating-system version, so use the Photos settings on the device rather than assuming a universal menu label. Apple lists availability starting with iOS 18, iPadOS 18, and macOS Sequoia; check Apple’s current feature documentation for the supported versions and controls that apply to your device.

Turning off this feature is a control for Apple’s Enhanced Visual Search; it does not disable every form of local image analysis or govern third-party apps. Those features have their own settings and data practices.

Why might visual search miss something?

Local models make judgments from the pixels they receive, and detection can fail when the subject is hard to distinguish or not prominent. Google’s Android guidance explicitly notes that success depends on visual complexity and subject prominence. A detector’s returned boxes or labels should be treated as model outputs, not definitive descriptions of everything in an image.

  • Try a clearer image: Blur, clutter, or a small subject can make visual analysis harder. Use a sharper image with the subject more prominent when possible.
  • Check the feature’s scope: A model may detect objects but not identify a specific landmark, or a feature may search photos but not screenshots.
  • Separate recognition from matching: A local detector may identify an object correctly while a remote or local index has no useful match for it.

These are ways to make the input easier to analyze, not guarantees of accuracy. No performance percentage or universal accuracy figure is established by the cited examples.

What is the practical privacy takeaway?

“On-device” is a useful clue, but it is not the end of the privacy check. Determine what the local model produces, what the search sends, where the index lives, and what protections or controls apply to that request. In Apple’s documented Photos landmark example, the original media stays off Apple’s servers for the lookup, while an encrypted embedding goes to a remote index. In developer-built systems, local detection may instead feed a cloud search backend. The implementation—not the label—determines the data flow.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Apple Enhanced Visual Search work with my iPhone?

Apple lists availability starting with iOS 18, iPadOS 18, and macOS Sequoia. Supported versions and feature details can change, so confirm the current requirements in Apple’s Photos feature documentation for your device and region.

Can I use Apple’s landmark search without an internet connection?

Apple’s description relies on a global index on its servers, so the landmark lookup requires a network request. Local analysis and a completed remote match are separate stages.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does a photo-search feature automatically include screenshots?

No general rule follows from the phrase “visual search.” Whether screenshots are included depends on the specific app or operating-system feature and the image sources it accepts.

Can I tell from an app’s permissions whether it uploads pictures?

Permissions can show whether an app may access photos or network services, but they do not by themselves explain what it transmits during a search. Look for the app’s feature-specific privacy documentation and its description of any server-side matching.
