Run a second AI review after every material change to AI-generated code, then run it again after substantive fixes. Add more scrutiny when a change affects security-sensitive behavior, dependencies, infrastructure, or production operations. There is no evidence-based universal number of review “rinse cycles”: the useful question is whether the final change has been checked thoroughly enough for its risk, not whether it has passed an arbitrary number of AI reviews.
A second model can spot issues the first missed, but its comments are leads to verify—not proof that code is correct or secure. Pair independent review with tests and deterministic security checks, and require a responsible human to understand and approve the change before it reaches production.

How often should you have another AI review AI-generated code?
Use one independent review for each material behavior change as a practical default. Repeat the review when you make a substantive fix, change dependencies, see new test failures, or alter a security boundary. Raise the depth of review as the potential impact of a defect rises; do not keep cycling code through models just to reach a supposed magic count.
“Material” means a change that can affect what the software does, what data it handles, which users or systems can access it, or how it is built and deployed. A focused review may be enough for a cosmetic or documentation-only edit. A change to authentication, payment handling, or a public endpoint warrants more deliberate scrutiny and supporting checks.

A practical default by change type
| Change | Review approach | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Material behavior change | Run an independent AI review after the change. | A second review can examine correctness, edge cases, security, dependencies, maintainability, and missing tests. |
| Substantive fix to a reviewed change | Review the updated diff again and rerun relevant checks. | A fix can introduce a regression or leave a related defect unresolved. |
| Security-sensitive or operationally significant change | Use enhanced review, deterministic checks, and qualified human review. | The impact of a missed defect is higher in trust boundaries and production-critical paths. |
| Cosmetic or documentation-only edit | Use a focused review appropriate to the change. | Review effort should reflect what the edit can affect. |
This is a risk-based working rule, not a measured formula for how many passes prevent defects. OWASP’s Secure Coding with AI guidance says every AI-assisted change should be reviewed, approved, and attributable to a developer responsible for its security and maintainability. The UK Home Office likewise says AI-assisted outputs must receive human review and approval before production. Neither statement sets a required number of AI passes.
Why can one AI reviewer catch problems another missed?
Different review prompts, tools, or models may direct attention to different parts of a change. One review may question an assumption, while another notices an edge case, a dependency, or a missing validation step. That makes a second review useful as another source of findings—not as an independent guarantee that the code is safe.
Independence matters. If the reviewer simply repeats the first model’s reasoning or is given a leading prompt that assumes the code is correct, the second pass may reinforce the same blind spots. You can vary the model, prompt, or review tool; the goal is to bring a fresh examination to the diff. A different model is one option, not a guarantee of better results.
Ask the reviewer to examine the change rather than endorse it. Request concrete findings about correctness, security, edge cases, dependencies, maintainability, and missing tests. Treat each finding as a claim to reproduce or investigate. A confident summary without a file location, failure scenario, or evidence is not enough to justify either accepting a change or declaring it clean.
How do you run a useful AI code-review rinse cycle?
Make each pass review a defined diff against stated requirements, not an unbounded conversation about the whole project. Collect the review evidence, verify meaningful findings, and rerun the review on the changed diff after fixes.

- Freeze the diff. Identify the exact change you want reviewed. Give the reviewer the requirements, affected files, relevant tests, dependency changes, and threat assumptions so it can judge behavior in context.
- Choose an independent review approach. Use a different model, prompt, or review tool where practical. Ask it to look for correctness problems, security weaknesses, edge cases, dependency risks, maintainability concerns, and missing tests—not merely to summarize the patch.
- Demand actionable findings. Ask for file and line references, severity, a concrete failure or exploit scenario, and a reproducible test or explanation. These details make it possible to distinguish a real defect from a vague suspicion.
- Run deterministic checks. Alongside the AI review, run relevant unit and integration tests, static application security testing (SAST), software composition analysis (SCA), secret scanning, and infrastructure checks. Choose checks that apply to the change; an AI review does not replace them.
- Verify substantive findings. Reproduce a reported failure, inspect the relevant code, or otherwise establish why the finding applies. Reject vague comments and do not accept a proposed fix simply because an AI supplied it.
- Review the fix. After correcting confirmed problems, inspect the new diff and rerun the reviewer on it. Rerun relevant tests and security checks as well, especially if the correction changed behavior, dependencies, or a trust boundary.
- Get accountable human approval. Before production, have a qualified owner understand and approve the final change. The owner remains responsible for the decision; a model’s approval or lack of findings does not transfer that responsibility.
What to include in the review request
- The intended behavior and requirements, including relevant constraints.
- The complete affected diff and file paths.
- Tests already run and any failures or gaps.
- Dependency changes and the purpose of each new or updated dependency.
- Relevant threat assumptions, such as who can supply input or cross an access boundary.
- A request for findings with location, severity, scenario, and reproducible evidence.
Keep the review bounded to the change while providing enough context to assess it. Without requirements or threat assumptions, a reviewer may miss that the code violates an important expectation even if the syntax looks sound. Conversely, a long list of speculative concerns is less useful than a short set of specific, testable findings.
When should you add extra review passes?
Escalate when the code’s risk or the evidence warrants it. One independent pass is a reasonable baseline for material behavior changes; more review is justified when the change touches a sensitive boundary, a substantive finding remains unresolved, or a fix creates new uncertainty.
Security-sensitive code
Give added attention to authentication, authorization, cryptography, session management, input parsing, file uploads, secrets, personal data, payments, public endpoints, and external interfaces. OWASP’s secure-code-review guidance distinguishes automated checks from human attention: scanners should run on every pull request, while human review focuses on context and business logic. Security-sensitive code and trust-boundary changes merit deeper review.
OWASP SAMM describes AI-based verification as a complement to deterministic checks, not a replacement for them. It calls for qualified reviewers to validate findings, especially around authentication, access control, session management, external interfaces, and input parsers. A second AI pass can help surface questions in these areas, but it does not satisfy that qualified review.
Dependencies, CI/CD, and infrastructure
Review dependency changes for whether the package is needed and appropriate, and use software composition analysis as part of the relevant checks. OWASP specifically flags hallucinated dependencies as a risk in generated code. Review changes to CI/CD and infrastructure with the same seriousness as application behavior because they can affect how software is built, tested, deployed, or exposed.

New failures or fixes that change scope
If tests fail after a change, use the failure to focus the next investigation rather than treating an AI explanation as the diagnosis. After a substantive correction, review the resulting diff: a patch can fix one path while breaking another or leave a related issue in place. If a fix changes the security boundary, dependency set, or production behavior, escalate the review accordingly.
What should you check in AI-written code?
Review the behavior the code permits, not only whether it compiles or passes the obvious test. OWASP advises examining generated code with the same critical eye as code from an unknown external contributor. In particular, look for missing authorization and input validation, weak or deprecated cryptography, hallucinated dependencies, and code the author cannot explain.
Correctness and edge cases
- Does the implementation meet the stated requirement, including failure cases?
- What happens with empty, malformed, oversized, or unexpected input where relevant?
- Do errors, retries, concurrency, or partial failures produce unsafe or inconsistent behavior?
- Do the tests cover the behavior that changed, not just the happy path?
Security and trust boundaries
- Does every protected action enforce authorization on the server-side path that performs it?
- Is untrusted input validated and handled appropriately at the boundary where it enters?
- Could the change expose secrets, personal data, or privileged operations?
- Does it alter authentication, sessions, cryptography, file handling, external interfaces, or public access?
Dependencies and operational behavior
- Are new dependencies real, necessary, and appropriate to the project?
- Does the change alter build, deployment, CI/CD, or infrastructure behavior?
- Are logs, error handling, and configuration consistent with the intended operational behavior?
- Can the responsible developer explain the implementation and its important trade-offs?
These questions are prompts for inspection, not a substitute for project-specific security requirements or tests. The appropriate checks depend on what the change actually touches.
How should you handle AI review findings?
Classify findings by evidence, not by how forcefully they are worded. A useful finding points to a place in the diff and explains a plausible failure; verify it before changing code. A reviewer can be wrong, just as generated code can be wrong.

| Finding quality | What to do |
|---|---|
| Specific location and reproducible failure or clear explanation | Investigate and fix if confirmed; add or update a test where appropriate. |
| Specific concern but no reproduction yet | Check the relevant requirement, code path, or threat assumption; seek evidence before accepting or dismissing it. |
| Vague warning without location or scenario | Ask for a concrete example or reject it as unverified. |
| No findings returned | Continue with deterministic checks and human review; silence is not proof of correctness. |
After a confirmed fix, make sure the review is looking at the updated diff rather than an earlier version. This prevents the process from treating a resolved finding as though the final code were unchanged, and gives reviewers a chance to notice regressions introduced by the fix.

Does a second AI review replace tests or human approval?
No. AI review supplements deterministic checks and accountable human review. Tests assess defined behavior; static and dependency analysis can detect classes of issues systematically; a qualified person must assess context and approve the final change.
OWASP SAMM explicitly says AI-based verification can complement, but not replace, deterministic checks. OWASP’s guidance assigns responsibility for each AI-assisted change to a developer who reviews and approves it. The UK Home Office’s stated requirement is also human review and approval before production. An AI reviewer can help a person ask better questions, but it cannot take ownership of the decision.
Is there a best number of AI review “rinse cycles”?
No universal optimum is established. The available guidance supports reviewing every AI-assisted change, rerunning after substantive fixes, and increasing scrutiny according to risk; it does not show that a particular number of AI passes produces a reliably better result.

Adoption figures should not be mistaken for proof of effectiveness. Frequently Asked Questions
Can an AI reviewer prove that code is secure?
No. A review can identify plausible issues, but a lack of findings does not establish that a change is secure. Security depends on project context, implementation, tests, and qualified review.
Should I use the same AI that wrote the code to review it?
You can ask it to review, but an independent model, prompt, or tool provides a fresh examination. Independence reduces the chance of simply repeating the original reasoning, though it cannot guarantee that different reviewers will find different problems.
What if two AI reviewers disagree about a code finding?
Treat the disagreement as a reason to inspect the cited code path and test the alleged behavior. Decide from requirements and reproducible evidence rather than choosing the more confident-sounding answer.
Does a clean AI review mean I can merge the code?
A clean review is only one input to the decision. Follow the project’s normal tests, security checks, and approval process before merging or deploying.
