For most listeners, wipe headphones after every workout or liquid exposure, clean in-ear earbuds about once a week, and perform a more thorough over-ear cleaning about once a month. That schedule is a starting point, not a universal law: sweat, earwax, makeup, shared use, climate and the headphone material all change the right interval.

Your model’s manual controls which cleaner is safe. Some manufacturers permit 70% or weaker isopropyl alcohol on specified exterior surfaces, while others prohibit alcohol and require a water-based wipe or a dry cloth. Keep all liquid out of mesh, microphones, charging ports and drivers, and let every part dry completely before wearing, storing or charging.

How often should I clean my headphones?

Use the shortest interval that matches your exposure. A person who wears over-ear headphones at a desk may need only a monthly deep clean, while someone who exercises in earbuds should wipe them after every session and clean the removable tips weekly.

Situation Recommended action Why the interval changes
After a workout, rain or visible sweat Wipe and dry the exterior immediately Moisture and salts can corrode metal and damage or mold pads
After makeup, sunscreen, lotion, soap or shampoo exposure Clean before storage Residue transfers to cushions, mesh and controls
In-ear earbuds in ordinary use About once a week Regular cleaning limits earwax buildup and helps preserve sound, calls and noise reduction
Over-ear headphones in ordinary use A deeper clean about once a month This is an expert rule of thumb, not a universal manufacturer requirement
Shared headphones or hearing-protection devices Clean between users; change detachable cushions or tips before the next user where practical Each user adds skin oil, sweat and ear-contact contamination

Honor’s support guidance uses “1 week/time” as its regular earbud-cleaning recommendation. John Chen, director of sales for Grado Labs, has recommended monthly cleaning for headphones; treat that as a dated professional rule of thumb rather than a specification for every model. Apple advises cleaning and drying Beats after workouts or contact with sweat, soap, shampoo, makeup, sunscreen or lotions. Sensear’s hearing-protection guidance is stricter for shared equipment and calls for changing contact parts before each user change.

  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Why does exposure matter more than a fixed calendar?

Sweat, rain and skin products leave moisture or residue in places a dry room does not. Sony warns that leaving sweat or moisture on headphones can rust metal parts and cause earpads to deteriorate or become moldy. Earbuds also sit in a warm, enclosed ear canal, so wax and skin oils accumulate faster than on a headband.

Inspect the gear rather than waiting for a date. Clean sooner when you see film on a pad, wax on a grille, a damp headband, an odor, reduced seal or muffled output. If the headphones are rarely used and stored dry, a monthly deep clean may be unnecessary; a light wipe before storage and an inspection before use can be enough.

What should I do immediately after sweat or liquid exposure?

Turn the headphones off, disconnect every cable, wipe the outside with the model-approved material and leave the parts open to air-dry at room temperature. Do not put damp headphones in a charging case or connect a charger, even if they appear to work.

Apple specifically calls for cleaning and drying Beats after workouts or exposure to sweat and products such as sunscreen. Sony’s warning about rust and mold means drying is part of the cleaning job, not an optional finishing step. If liquid reached a port, microphone or driver opening, stop using and charging the device until it is fully dry; do not try to flush the opening with more liquid.

How do I clean headphones safely?

Follow this sequence for a routine clean, then apply any model-specific restrictions in the manual. The device should be powered down and physically disconnected before you touch it.

  1. Power down and disconnect. Turn the headphones off and unplug USB, charging and audio cables. Sony explicitly requires this before cleaning.
  2. Remove only permitted parts. Detach silicone tips or ear pads only when the product instructions show that they are removable. Keep screws, clips and electronic assemblies dry.
  3. Prepare an approved cloth or wipe. Use the manufacturer’s specified dry cloth, slightly damp cloth, water-based wipe or alcohol solution. Never spray cleaner directly onto the headphones.
  4. Wipe the exterior. Clean plastic, metal, headband and compatible pad surfaces with gentle passes. Keep liquid away from seams, buttons, hinges, microphones and openings.
  5. Brush openings dry. Use a clean, soft-bristled brush or cotton swab on speaker mesh, sound holes, microphones and case openings. Lift debris outward; do not push it into the driver.
  6. Clean removable tips separately. Wash or wipe silicone tips only as the manual permits, then leave them off the earbuds until completely dry.
  7. Dry and inspect. Let every component reach room temperature and feel dry before reassembly, wearing, placing it in a case or plugging in a charger.

Can I use rubbing alcohol on earbuds?

Only if the manufacturer allows the concentration and the exact surface. “Rubbing alcohol” is not a universal headphone cleaner: alcohol can damage coatings, leather, foam, adhesives or plastics that tolerate water.

Product guidance What it permits or recommends What to avoid
Marshall Minor III A slightly damp cloth or wipe; complete drying is required Sharp objects, compressed air, bleach and hydrogen peroxide
Microsoft Surface Earbuds An isopropyl-alcohol solution of 70% or less on suitable surfaces Liquid entering openings or contacts
Sony WH-1000XM6 99% water-based wipes Alcohol, thinner and benzene
Sennheiser headphones A clean, dry cloth as the default; follow the product documentation for removable pads Solvents and soaking
Beats A dry cloth for ear cups and mesh; no aerosol sprays, solvents or abrasives Spraying or abrasive scrubbing

These instructions can conflict, which is why the manual for your exact model takes priority. If the manual is silent, choose the least aggressive method: a dry microfiber-style cloth on the exterior and a dry soft brush for mesh. The CDC’s general advice for electronics is to follow the manufacturer’s cleaning recommendations.

How do I clean earwax from headphone mesh?

Start with the mesh facing downward so loosened debris falls away from the driver. Use a dry, soft-bristled electronics brush or a dry cotton swab with light strokes. Work around the grille rather than pressing into it, and repeat with a clean section of the brush until the visible wax is lifted.

Do not use a pin, needle, toothpick, blade or other sharp object. Do not blow compressed air into the grille: Marshall specifically prohibits it for Minor III, and a forceful blast can drive debris farther inside. Never drip alcohol, water or cleaner onto the mesh. If wax remains behind the grille or the sound stays muffled, stop before damaging the driver and consult the model’s service instructions.

How should I clean silicone ear tips?

Remove silicone tips only when the design allows it, and keep the electronic housing separate. Honor allows water or an alcohol-free cloth for tips. Rinse or wipe the detached tip as directed, remove all residue and let it dry fully on a clean surface before reinstalling.

A damp tip can trap moisture against the earbud nozzle and ear canal. Inspect the small nozzle screen after removal and clean it with a dry brush or cotton swab; do not push wax through the screen. Replace a tip that is torn, permanently sticky, misshapen or unable to seal comfortably.

How do I clean headphone ear pads?

First identify the pad material and whether it detaches. Fabric, foam, synthetic leather and real leather do not share the same chemical tolerance. Sennheiser notes that some pads can be washed only after removal and according to the manual; never assume a pad is washable because it looks removable.

  • Fabric or foam: Begin with a dry cloth. Use only a material-specific cleaner named by the manual, and use as little moisture as possible.
  • Real or synthetic leather: Avoid unapproved alcohol, bleach, solvents and excessive water, which can strip finishes or accelerate cracking.
  • Detachable pads: Mark their orientation if needed, remove them gently, clean them separately and wait until they are completely dry before refitting.
  • Fixed pads: Clean the exposed surface without soaking the seam or forcing liquid under the cushion.

Persistent odor, flaking, cracking or a pad that has lost its shape is a replacement problem, not a cue to scrub harder. Pads that no longer seal can also change comfort and sound isolation.

How do I clean microphones, charging contacts and ports?

Use a dry soft brush or dry cotton swab and gentle outward strokes. Microphone holes, charging-case openings and speaker vents are especially easy to contaminate and especially risky to wet.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For charging contacts, a clean, dry pointed swab can lift lint without force. Do not use a damp cloth on contacts, insert metal tools, or scrape aggressively. Keep the charging case open while it dries, and inspect both the earbuds and the case before charging.

What cleaners and tools should I avoid?

The safest kit is deliberately simple: a clean dry cloth, a soft-bristled electronics brush, dry cotton swabs and, only when explicitly permitted, the approved wipe or 70%-or-lower isopropyl solution. Keep liquids on the cloth rather than the device.

  • Never spray or pour cleaner directly onto headphones.
  • Do not soak pads, earbuds, headbands or charging cases.
  • Avoid bleach, hydrogen peroxide, solvents, abrasives, thinner and benzene unless the manual expressly says otherwise; the cited manufacturer instructions specifically prohibit several of these.
  • Do not use compressed air or sharp objects on mesh and openings.
  • Do not reassemble, wear or charge parts that are still damp.

If you are unsure whether a cleaner is compatible with a coating or pad, choose a dry method and check the exact product documentation before escalating.

When should I replace headphone cushions or ear tips?

Replace a cushion or tip when it is cracked, flaking, permanently stained, misshapen, odorous after cleaning or unable to maintain a comfortable seal. Sennheiser describes earpads as usually replaceable for hygiene and advises replacement when they become soiled rather than solvent cleaning.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Sensear gives hearing-protection users a benchmark of every three to six months under normal wear and every two to three months with heavy use or humid or extreme climates. That interval is for its hearing-protection context; consumer headphones may last longer or shorter depending on material, sweat and use. Treat visible degradation and hygiene as the deciding factors, not the calendar alone.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Support on Ko-Fi

How should I handle shared headphones?

Clean contact surfaces between users and use a fresh cushion or tip before the next user where practical. Sensear explicitly recommends changing these parts at each user change for hearing-protection devices. For general headphones, wipe the headband, ear-contact surfaces and controls, then allow them to dry before handoff.

Do not share earbuds with visibly soiled or damaged tips. Keeping spare compatible tips or pads makes a hygienic change possible without rushing a wet cleaning job.

What if the headphones still smell, sound muffled or will not charge?

Match the symptom to the likely cleaning mistake before trying a stronger chemical.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Odor remains: Remove and replace degraded pads or tips. Odor that survives a correct, fully dried cleaning usually indicates material breakdown or absorbed contamination.
  • One side sounds muffled: Inspect the mesh and nozzle for wax, brush outward while dry and check that a tip is seated correctly. Do not push debris through the grille.
  • Charging stops: Disconnect the charger, inspect contacts and case openings for moisture or lint, and let everything dry at room temperature. Never scrape contacts with metal.
  • Surface becomes sticky or discolored: Stop using the cleaner that caused it. The coating or pad may be incompatible, and replacement may be safer than further wiping.
  • Moisture reached the driver or microphone: Leave the device powered off and disconnected until fully dry; if operation remains abnormal, use the manufacturer’s service route rather than repeated cleaning.

How can I keep headphones cleaner between deep cleans?

Store them in a dry, ventilated case rather than immediately sealing in sweat. Keep hair products, sunscreen and lotion off the ear-contact surfaces, and wipe visible residue before it hardens. Rotate or replace pads and tips when they stop drying quickly or holding their shape.

A practical routine is therefore simple: inspect before storage, wipe after exposure, clean in-ear parts weekly, perform a careful over-ear clean about monthly when use is ordinary, and replace worn contact parts instead of trying to disinfect them with increasingly harsh chemicals.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I clean headphones while they are charging?

No. Turn them off, disconnect the charging cable and keep the case or headphones unplugged until every surface and opening is completely dry. Cleaning around energized contacts increases the chance of liquid ingress or a short.

Is a wet wipe safe for every headphone model?

No. Some models specify a water-based wipe, while others require a dry cloth or allow isopropyl alcohol only at a stated concentration. Check the exact model instructions and never use a wipe that conflicts with its material or chemical warnings.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How do I know whether an ear pad is washable?

Removability does not prove washability. Wash a pad only when the product documentation explicitly permits removal and washing; otherwise use a dry cloth or the named material-specific cleaner and avoid saturating the cushion.

Should I clean the charging case as often as the earbuds?

Inspect the case whenever you clean the earbuds, because lint and moisture on its contacts can prevent charging. Use a dry brush or cotton swab on openings and contacts, and leave the case open until fully dry before inserting the earbuds.
