Observation Coach is an AI project built around an unusual success condition: you spend less time looking at the app and more time noticing what is around you. You choose a short observation session, put your phone away, then return to describe something you saw. The AI responds with a follow-up question and an exercise intended to help you look more closely next time.

That is a design idea, not a proven behavior-change result. Its creator describes a working implementation and a live preview, but has not published controlled learning results, user-retention figures, or independent testing. The distinction matters: Observation Coach shows one way AI might support attention without trying to do the observing for you.

What is Observation Coach?

Observation Coach is a project by Rittik Chakraborty, submitted to Hacktoberfest 2026’s Touch Grass week. It uses AI as a reflection partner: the user observes the world first, describes a detail afterward, and gets a prompt intended to deepen that observation. The project was an individual entry in the Best Use of MongoDB Atlas category.

The premise is deliberately different from asking an AI to identify whatever is in front of a camera. The app is not designed to supply an answer about the scene; it asks the user to pay attention, form a description, and consider what they may have missed. Chakraborty summarizes the philosophy this way: “The idea is simple: AI should teach you how to observe, rather than observe everything for you.”

Yojaro 4Pack Silicone Suction Phone Case Mount, Silicon Adhesive Smartphones Stand Sticky, Hands-Free Phone Accessories Holder for Selfies and Videos (Black & White & Translucent & Light Pink)
  • 【Strong Adsorption】The inspiration of the silicone phone suction case comes from the adhesive force of the octopus. Each suction cup phone mount is 3.15 inches long and 2.17 inches wide, with 24 independent suction cups providing a stronger and more stable suction force, so you don't have to worry about your phone falling during use.
  • 【Back of Phone Suction Grip】Remove the adhesive film on the phone suction cup and stick it on the phone case. You can then fix the phone on any smooth surface, which is very convenient. (The phone suction cup cannot be removed and reused after being attached to the phone case. It is recommended to attach it to a regular phone case, not a valuable one.)
  • 【Widely Used】Our non-slip silicone phone sticky grip mount attaches to almost any flat phone case and make it compatible with common mobile phones such as iPhone and Android. You can shoot, watch videos or video calls in the kitchen, gym, dance studio, bathroom and other places.
  • 【Capture the Wonderful Picture】Whether you are a TikTok creator or just like to share videos and photos, this phone suction cup can help you hands-free capture wonderful videos and photos for sharing with friends.
  • 【Note】You can fix the phone suction cup on a smooth surface such as a mirror or glass. If necessary, wipe the suction cup with a damp cloth to obtain stronger suction. Before releasing your hand, make sure the phone is firmly fixed. (Not applicable to rough walls, wooden surfaces, and other uneven surfaces)

That makes it a coaching concept rather than an answer engine. Its intended practice areas include attention, description, comparison, change, inference, and deeper observation. It avoids camera-based object identification, endless challenge generation, and competitive scoring.

How does an observation session work?

A session follows five steps, moving the screen out of the center of the activity and bringing it back only for reflection and guidance.

  1. Choose a duration. Select a 5-, 10-, 20-, or 30-minute observation session.
  2. Put the phone away. Explore your surroundings rather than using the app to scan or label them.
  3. Describe a real detail. Return and write about something you actually noticed during the session.
  4. Consider a follow-up question. The AI uses your description to ask a thoughtful question about it.
  5. Try an adaptive exercise. The app offers a next exercise intended to build observation skill over time.

The important handoff is between observation and interpretation. The system receives a written reflection after the user has looked around; the design does not ask the AI to watch the environment on the user’s behalf. A follow-up question can encourage another look at the detail rather than replacing the user’s account with a polished explanation.

For example, the project’s approach implies a distinction between stopping at a basic description and being prompted to explore it further. The AI is meant to help the user examine what they noticed, not immediately deliver an elaborate interpretation. That keeps the exercise centered on the user’s attention and language.

What makes this different from a typical AI or nature app?

Many AI experiences are organized around producing an answer quickly. Observation Coach instead puts a short offline activity before the model interaction, then uses a question to extend the user’s own observation. Its design also avoids turning the practice into a competition or a stream of generated challenges.

Apple EarPods Headphones with USB-C Plug, Wired Ear Buds with Built-in Remote to Control Music, Phone Calls, and Volume
  • SUPERIOR COMFORT — Unlike traditional circular ear buds, the design of EarPods is defined by the geometry of the ear. Which makes them more comfortable for more people than any other ear bud–style headphones.
  • HIGH-QUALITY AUDIO — The speakers inside EarPods have been engineered to maximize sound output and minimize sound loss, which means you get high-quality audio.
  • BUILT-IN REMOTE — EarPods with USB-C plug also include a built-in remote that lets you adjust the volume, control the playback of music and video, and answer or end calls with a pinch of the cord.
  • COMPATIBILITY — Works with all devices that have a USB-C port.
  • INTEGRATED MICROPHONE — A built-in microphone precisely captures your voice while you’re on the phone, taking a FaceTime call, or summoning Siri — so you’re always heard loud and clear.
Approach What the person does What the AI or app does
Camera-based identification Points a camera at something for recognition. Identifies or labels an object; this is not the project’s stated approach.
Generic prompt or challenge Responds to a prompt that may be the same for everyone. Supplies a challenge without necessarily using the user’s prior description.
Observation Coach Looks around, then describes a detail personally noticed. Asks a follow-up based on that description and selects a next exercise intended to adapt to progress.

The claimed difference is the loop, not a demonstrated advantage in learning outcomes. Adaptive progression is part of the product design, but the source does not publish a controlled comparison showing that it improves observation more than a generic prompt or independent practice.

How does the AI decide what to ask next?

The project combines structured prompts, response validation, and a progression system. The stated goal is to produce short reflections, follow-up questions, and next exercises in a form the application can validate before using them. A progression system is intended to select what to practise next based on the user’s description and practice history.

This structure matters because an open-ended model can return material that is irrelevant to the intended exercise. Validating structured responses gives the application a way to check that a generated response fits the expected format before presenting it. The available description does not provide the validation rules, progression algorithm, or examples of how a particular observation maps to a specific skill, so those implementation details should not be assumed.

It also explains why the app is framed as a coach rather than an oracle. A useful follow-up should help a person return to their own observation—perhaps by considering a detail, comparison, or change—rather than imply that the model has access to evidence the person never supplied.

Can Observation Coach work offline?

The project’s stated local setup is intended to work without an internet connection once the application, database, and model are installed and configured. In that setup, inference runs locally through llama.cpp using Qwen 3B Instruct in GGUF format, and personal observations can remain on the user’s machine.

“Offline” here describes the intended local configuration, not a guarantee that every way of using the project works offline. Installation and model setup must already be complete, and the hosted inference option depends on an external service. The project also includes a guided demo mode for exploring the workflow without a working AI API key; the available description does not specify whether that demo provides live model responses.

For someone considering the local route, the practical question is whether they are prepared to configure local inference and have hardware adequate for the chosen model. The project description does not publish minimum hardware requirements or performance measurements, so it does not establish how quickly the local model will respond on a particular computer.

What are the local and hosted options?

The application separates its AI provider from the rest of the product so it can support local inference and hosted OpenAI-compatible APIs without a complete rewrite. The local and hosted paths exchange some of the same priorities: local control and offline use on one side, less local model setup on the other.

Option Implementation described Practical trade-off
Local inference Qwen 3B Instruct in GGUF format, run through llama.cpp. Can support offline use after setup and keep observations on the user’s machine; requires local model configuration and sufficient hardware.
Hosted inference Intended hosted path: Qwen 27B Instruct through Groq. A practical alternative when local hardware is insufficient; it depends on the hosted service and internet access.

The 27B hosted model is described as the intended path, while the local model and llama.cpp form the documented local setup. The source does not provide response-time benchmarks, model-quality comparisons, service availability guarantees, or operating costs. It therefore supports a comparison of architecture and trade-offs, not a claim that one option produces better coaching.

Privacy depends on which path is configured. In the local setup, the project says personal observations can stay on the user’s machine. With hosted inference, requests are handled through an external provider; the project description does not specify provider-side data retention or handling terms. Users should check the applicable service’s current privacy terms before sending sensitive reflections through a hosted configuration.

What is the technology stack?

The application’s interface is built with Next.js App Router, TypeScript, and Tailwind CSS. MongoDB stores user accounts, sessions, saved observations, and progress. An AI provider abstraction connects the application to local inference or hosted OpenAI-compatible APIs, while structured model responses are validated before use.

Separating the provider from the product logic is intended to let the project support different environments and model configurations without rebuilding the whole application. The same separation is relevant to users because it underpins the local-versus-hosted choice; it does not, by itself, establish that all data stays local. That depends on the actual configuration and where inference runs.

What is established—and what is not?

The available account documents a live preview, an open-source repository, implementation choices, and the creator’s product rationale. It does not report user counts, retention, controlled results measuring whether people become better observers, clinical or psychological validation, pricing, or revenue. Those omissions do not show that the concept fails; they mean its benefits should be described as intentions rather than verified outcomes.

That qualification is especially important for claims about attention or skill-building. The exercises are designed to practise observation, and the progression system is intended to adapt them. There is no published evidence in the account establishing how much practice users complete or whether their observation improves over time.

Chakraborty’s stated goal is: “The goal isn’t to make people spend more time with AI. It’s to make them need AI less.” That is a useful way to understand the product philosophy, but it is an aspiration rather than a measured result. The project’s more defensible contribution is demonstrating a different interaction pattern: the person looks first, and the AI responds afterward.

Who might find the idea useful?

The workflow may appeal to people who want a prompt to slow down and notice a place, object, or change in their surroundings, but who do not want an app to identify everything for them. Its short, selectable session lengths make it possible to choose a bounded activity, while the follow-up question gives the return to the phone a reflective purpose.

It may be a poor fit for someone looking for automated plant, bird, or object identification, a continuously generated list of activities, or a competitive streak system. Those are intentionally outside the described design. It is also not a substitute for evidence-based treatment or a validated attention-training program: no such validation is reported.
