There is no universal Android phone minimum for running a local large language model (LLM). As a practical starting point for experimenting, look for 8–12 GB of RAM and 128–256 GB of internal storage; 12 GB of RAM and 256 GB of storage give you more headroom, but those figures are guidance—not an official compatibility threshold. The deciding factors are the specific model, its format and task, the inference runtime, and the resources your phone can make available while it runs.

Google’s Gemma 4 documentation estimates 0.84 GB of mobile inference memory for E2B text-only and 2.2 GB for E4B text-only, while the corresponding listed model files are 2,583 MB and 3,654 MB. Those numbers describe different constraints: memory used during inference and storage occupied by a model file. Neither alone guarantees that a particular phone can run the model well.

How much RAM and storage should I look for?

For experimentation, 8–12 GB of RAM and 128–256 GB of internal storage is a useful buying range. A phone with 12 GB RAM and 256 GB storage leaves more room to try models than a lower-capacity configuration, but it is not a promise that a particular model or app will work. Check compatibility for the exact phone, model, and runtime before buying a handset specifically for local inference.

This range is a buying heuristic, not a published minimum, certification, or guarantee of speed. It does not mean every phone below 8 GB is unable to run any local model, or that every phone with 12 GB can run every model. The specific app and model matter. If you are considering a phone mainly for offline AI, start by checking the model and runtime you want rather than treating a RAM label as a compatibility list.

RAM is working memory: the phone needs it while loading and running a model. Storage holds the downloaded model file and app data, along with everything else on the phone. A device can have enough free storage for a model but too little available memory to run it, or sufficient RAM but too little storage to download it.

Do not compare a phone’s advertised RAM directly with a model’s inference-memory estimate and assume the difference is available for other tasks. The operating system, apps, runtime, model settings, and workload all affect what memory is available in practice. Google also cautions that its estimates can change with the inference tool and environment. In other words, an advertised RAM total is not the same thing as RAM reserved for inference.

What do Google’s Gemma 4 figures actually mean?

Google publishes approximate mobile inference-memory figures for two Gemma 4 model sizes and lists their model-file sizes separately. The estimates distinguish text-only use from a broader mobile workload, so choose the row that most closely matches the model and task you intend to run.

Model and workload Approximate mobile inference memory Listed model-file size
Gemma 4 E2B, text-only 0.84 GB 2,583 MB for the E2B model
Gemma 4 E2B, mobile 1.1 GB 2,583 MB for the E2B model
Gemma 4 E4B, text-only 2.2 GB 3,654 MB for the E4B model
Gemma 4 E4B, mobile 2.5 GB 3,654 MB for the E4B model

The memory estimates are approximate model/runtime figures, not recommended total phone RAM. They do not mean that a phone with 0.84 GB of RAM can run E2B: the estimate is for the model’s mobile inference memory, not the operating system, app, and other simultaneous phone use. Likewise, the table’s listed model-file size is not a RAM requirement.

The comparison also shows why the workload is worth checking. For E2B, Google’s approximate mobile estimate is 0.84 GB for text-only and 1.1 GB for mobile; for E4B, the figures are 2.2 GB and 2.5 GB. The broader mobile estimate is higher for each variant. Do not substitute the text-only figure if you plan to use a broader workload, or treat either value as a universal phone specification.

The figures are model-specific rather than a universal rule for all local LLMs. A different model, quantization, modality, runtime, or environment can change its resource needs. Use the selected model’s own documentation where available rather than inferring the requirement from its name or parameter count alone. Two models that appear similar by name or parameter count can still have different published resource needs, so use the actual model artifact and runtime documentation when comparing options.

Apple EarPods Headphones with USB-C Plug, Wired Ear Buds with Built-in Remote to Control Music, Phone Calls, and Volume
  • SUPERIOR COMFORT — Unlike traditional circular ear buds, the design of EarPods is defined by the geometry of the ear. Which makes them more comfortable for more people than any other ear bud–style headphones.
  • HIGH-QUALITY AUDIO — The speakers inside EarPods have been engineered to maximize sound output and minimize sound loss, which means you get high-quality audio.
  • BUILT-IN REMOTE — EarPods with USB-C plug also include a built-in remote that lets you adjust the volume, control the playback of music and video, and answer or end calls with a pinch of the cord.
  • COMPATIBILITY — Works with all devices that have a USB-C port.
  • INTEGRATED MICROPHONE — A built-in microphone precisely captures your voice while you’re on the phone, taking a FaceTime call, or summoning Siri — so you’re always heard loud and clear.

Why are RAM and model-file size different?

A model file is stored on the phone; runtime memory is used when the model is loaded and processing a request. They are separate measurements, so do not add them together to calculate a single “minimum” or assume they should match. The official Gemma examples make the distinction visible: Google lists E2B at 2,583 MB on disk, alongside a 0.84 GB text-only inference-memory estimate.

Storage planning also needs to account for more than one model file. The phone will continue to need space for apps, updates, personal files, and any additional model versions or variants you download. Keep enough free internal storage for those uses rather than treating the model’s listed size as the amount of phone storage to buy.

For example, the listed E2B file is 2,583 MB and the E4B file is 3,654 MB. Those are useful scale indicators, but a buyer should check the actual download and app requirements for the chosen runtime and leave room for ordinary phone use. A 128 GB or 256 GB capacity describes the phone’s storage tier, not the amount guaranteed to be free after Android, apps, photos, and other files are accounted for.

If you want to keep multiple models or versions, account for each downloaded artifact rather than assuming a single file will be the only storage use. The cited documentation does not establish one fixed amount of extra free space for every installation, so avoid promising that a given storage tier will fit a particular collection without checking the actual files and remaining capacity.

What do the Android benchmark figures tell you?

Google’s LiteRT-LM overview reports selected measurements on a Samsung S26 Ultra: peak CPU memory of 1,733 MB for Gemma 4 E2B and 3,283 MB for E4B. These are measurements from one device and runtime setup, not an Android-wide compatibility guarantee or a specification for every app.

The same overview lists the model files at 2,583 MB for E2B and 3,654 MB for E4B. The benchmark’s peak CPU memory figures and the listed file sizes are useful for understanding separate resource demands, but they are not interchangeable. A result on that phone does not establish what another handset, accelerator, runtime version, or workload will use.

These peak CPU measurements are also distinct from the Gemma documentation’s approximate mobile inference-memory figures. The figures come from different documented contexts, so do not assume they should match exactly or combine them into one requirement. They are useful reference points for understanding scale, not a substitute for a measurement on the phone and runtime you intend to use.

When a benchmark is available, look for the device, runtime, model, task, and measurement type. A peak-memory figure from a CPU run is not automatically the memory requirement for a GPU or other acceleration path. The cited overview provides selected examples, not a full matrix covering Android phones.

How can I choose a phone and model without guessing?

Start with the model and runtime you actually intend to use, then work outward to the handset. A large RAM label or a large storage figure cannot compensate for an unsupported model format or runtime. Use this checklist before settling on a device:

  1. Choose the workload. Decide whether you need text-only inference or a broader mobile task. Google’s Gemma 4 figures show that the estimate can differ by workload even for the same model size.
  2. Find the model’s published resource figures. Record both the approximate inference memory and the model artifact size, if the documentation gives them. Keep the units and qualifications attached to each number.
  3. Check the runtime’s current guidance. Confirm that it supports the model and the intended Android device or hardware-acceleration path. For new Android app work, Google’s current recommendation is to use LiteRT-LM rather than begin with the older MediaPipe LLM Inference API.
  4. Compare a relevant device measurement, if one exists. Prefer a benchmark for the same model and runtime on the exact handset, or at least a clearly identified comparable device. Treat a result from a different setup as a reference, not a guarantee.
  5. Check the phone’s actual configuration and available space. Verify the RAM and internal-storage variant being sold, then account for the space already occupied by Android, apps, updates, and personal data. A model’s download requirement does not tell you how much free space your particular phone has.
  6. Leave room for uncertainty. If documentation does not establish compatibility or a device-specific result, do not turn a general RAM heuristic into a promise. Confirm the exact combination before spending extra on a phone for this use.

When comparing two phones, compare like with like: the exact RAM and storage configurations, the model artifact you want, and any measurement for the relevant runtime. A higher storage tier can make room for more files, but it does not establish that inference will work; a higher RAM tier does not prove that the runtime supports the device or its acceleration path. If there is no benchmark for the intended setup, treat that uncertainty as a reason to verify compatibility rather than as evidence of either success or failure.

No particular phone model or price is established by the cited documentation. A broad search such as “Android phone 12GB RAM 256GB storage” may help locate configurations to compare, but it is not an official minimum or a compatibility claim. Check the exact configuration in the current seller listing and the maker’s specifications before relying on it.

Which Android runtime should developers check?

Google says the MediaPipe LLM Inference API for Android, iOS, and Web is in maintenance-only mode and recommends migrating to LiteRT-LM for continued support and performance. That distinction matters especially when choosing an implementation for a new Android app; the API’s maintenance status does not itself set a phone’s RAM or storage requirement.

Use the runtime documentation to verify model-format support, supported devices, and the relevant execution path. The LiteRT-LM overview includes model sizes and selected device measurements, but it does not give a complete, current compatibility list for Android phones. Compatibility and performance should therefore be checked for the intended model-runtime-device combination.

For developers, do not treat a runtime’s general direction as confirmation that every model, handset, or hardware-acceleration route is supported. Confirm the specific model format and target device against current LiteRT-LM documentation. If adapting an existing app, the maintenance-only status means the MediaPipe API is not the recommended starting point for continued support and performance; it does not imply that a phone needs a particular RAM capacity.

Does Android Studio’s 12 GB RAM requirement apply to a phone?

No. Android Developers’ “Use a local model in Android Studio” page lists 12 GB RAM and 4 GB storage for running Gemma E4B with the Android Studio development environment on a local computer. Those are computer-side requirements, not an Android phone minimum.

The distinction is easy to miss because both cases involve a local model. A development computer running Android Studio has its own operating system and IDE resource demands; those requirements cannot be transferred to a phone’s hardware specification. If you are searching for a phone requirement, do not use the Android Studio row as the answer.

What can’t these figures tell you?

The published examples do not establish a universal minimum, a complete list of compatible Android phones, or guaranteed speed and reliability on a particular device. Google’s memory estimates are approximate and can vary with the tool and environment. Its cited device measurements cover selected setups, not every phone or acceleration method.

They also do not establish that a phone with a certain advertised RAM amount will have that amount free for inference. Nor do they prove that a model will fit a particular phone’s remaining storage. Use the values as model-specific planning references, then check the runtime and the exact handset configuration.

There is no verified price comparison or named handset recommendation in these figures. Capacity alone is not enough to identify a good purchase: check the actual RAM configuration, internal storage, available free space, chipset and runtime support, and the current model and runtime requirements. A phone-cleaning or optimization utility is not evidence that an unsupported model will run or that insufficient RAM or storage has been solved.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use a microSD card to store a local LLM on Android?

The cited Google documentation does not establish whether a given Android runtime can load its model from removable storage. Check the specific app’s storage and file-access requirements before relying on a microSD card.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do Gemma 4’s memory estimates apply to other local LLMs?

No. These estimates are for the named Gemma 4 variants and workloads; another model and runtime may have different requirements. Look for resource figures for the exact model you plan to run.

Is there a complete list of Android phones that support local LLMs?

The Google AI Edge LiteRT-LM overview, accessed in 2026, gives selected device examples rather than a complete, current phone compatibility matrix. Check the model and runtime support information for the particular handset.

How much space does an offline AI model take?

It depends on the model and artifact. Google AI Edge’s LiteRT-LM overview lists Gemma 4 E2B at 2,583 MB and E4B at 3,654 MB. Leave additional room for the app, other model versions, updates, and personal files.

Does Android Studio’s 12 GB RAM figure mean my phone needs 12 GB?

No. Android Developers lists 12 GB RAM and 4 GB storage for running Gemma E4B with Android Studio on a local computer. Those are development-computer requirements, not a phone minimum.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Is 12 GB RAM and 256 GB storage an official minimum?

No. It is a practical buying heuristic for experimentation, not an official compatibility threshold. Verify the exact model, runtime, and phone combination before buying for local inference.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: 8–12 GB RAM and 128–256 GB of internal storage is a reasonable experimentation range, with 12 GB and 256 GB giving more headroom—but neither is a universal minimum or guarantee. RAM is needed while a model runs; storage holds its file and the rest of your phone’s data. Compare the selected model’s own inference and file-size figures, then verify runtime support and the exact handset rather than relying on a RAM label alone.
