There is no regulator-approved percentage that fits every investor. The appropriate AI or technology allocation depends on your goal, time horizon, risk tolerance, tax position and the exposure you already own indirectly through broad funds, employer shares and other accounts.
Set your overall mix of stocks, bonds, cash and other assets first. Then treat AI and technology as either part of a diversified core or a deliberately capped satellite position. Count overlapping holdings across the whole portfolio, because a technology-labeled fund can still be heavily concentrated and AI-related risks now appear in sectors that do not look like technology.

What percentage of a portfolio should be in AI and technology?
No universal maximum is established by the SEC, Investor.gov or the other authorities cited for this topic. The SEC’s investor-education guidance says, “There is no single asset allocation model that is right for every financial goal.” A percentage that may be tolerable for a long-term retirement account can be unsuitable for money needed in a few years.
The decision has two layers. First choose the portfolio’s total exposure to risky assets; only then decide whether a portion of that exposure should be tilted toward technology or AI. A 15% technology sleeve inside a portfolio that is 90% stocks creates a different risk profile from a 15% sleeve inside a portfolio that is 50% stocks and 50% bonds.

- Goal: Money for a near-term purchase has less time to recover from a sector drawdown than retirement savings decades away.
- Time horizon: Longer horizons can make volatility easier to absorb, but they do not eliminate the possibility of a prolonged technology slump.
- Risk tolerance and capacity: Your ability to tolerate losses is different from your willingness to tolerate them. Both matter.
- Tax position: Selling an appreciated position may create a taxable gain, while holding it may leave the portfolio more concentrated than intended.
- Existing exposure: Broad-market funds, international funds, employer stock and other accounts may already contain the same large technology companies or AI-linked businesses.
Use any numerical target as a personal policy you can explain and maintain, not as a rule supplied by a regulator. Write down why the position exists, its maximum size and what would cause you to reduce it.
How should you set your overall allocation before adding a technology tilt?
Start with the portfolio you need, not the theme you find exciting. The following sequence keeps a sector decision from silently becoming your entire investment plan.
- Define the job of the money. List each goal, its target date and whether a loss near that date would force you to change plans.
- Choose the broad asset mix. Decide how much belongs in stocks, bonds, cash and any other asset categories before selecting an AI or technology holding.
- Separate core from satellite exposure. A core allocation is built for broad diversification. A satellite position is a deliberate thematic bet with a written ceiling and a rebalancing method.
- Inventory every account. Include retirement plans, taxable brokerage accounts, employer shares, mutual funds, ETFs and cash-management products.
- Set a rule you can follow. Record the maximum exposure, the review date and whether new contributions will be directed to underweight assets before any sale is considered.
This order matters because a technology sleeve can otherwise crowd out bonds or other industries without an obvious transaction. Investor.gov emphasizes that diversification must be evaluated across the actual holdings, not inferred from a fund’s name.
How do you measure your real AI and tech concentration?
Look through each fund and account to the companies and industries underneath. Add the weights of repeated holdings and related businesses; do not count only securities whose names contain “AI” or “technology.”
Direct holdings
These are individual shares or narrowly focused funds you bought specifically for a technology theme. Record the current market value and divide it by the value of the entire portfolio, not just the account where it sits.

Indirect holdings
A broad-market fund may already own the same mega-cap technology companies as your sector ETF. International funds can add semiconductor, software or hardware exposure, while an employer’s stock can create a second concentration in the same economic cycle.
AI-linked businesses outside the technology sector
The Pensions Regulator warns that apparently unrelated sectors can share AI-driven risks. Cloud infrastructure, semiconductor suppliers, data-center utilities and other businesses can respond to the same spending cycle even when their industry labels differ.
| Exposure to review | What to check | Why it can be missed |
|---|---|---|
| Broad-market mutual fund or ETF | Top holdings and their combined weight | A fund with hundreds of securities may still be dominated by a small group of large companies. |
| Technology or AI sector fund | Industry spread, top-10 concentration and overlap with other funds | A fund label does not guarantee diversification; Investor.gov specifically cautions that narrowly focused funds may not be diversified. |
| International fund | Semiconductor, hardware and software exposure by region | Geographic diversification can still contain repeated technology risks. |
| Employer shares | Value relative to the whole portfolio and your income source | Job and investment risk may depend on the same company or industry. |
| Utilities and infrastructure | Data-center, power-demand or cloud-related dependencies | AI exposure can be economically linked without appearing in a technology-sector category. |
A practical worksheet has one row per holding, its portfolio weight, its largest underlying companies and a broad industry label. Flag repeated names and shared drivers. The result is a look-through estimate rather than a misleading total based on account titles.
Why can broad diversification matter more than the AI label?
Diversification spreads dependence across asset classes, industries, regions, market capitalizations and investment styles. It cannot prevent losses, but it reduces the chance that one technology cycle determines the outcome for every goal.
Investor.gov states: “A mutual fund or ETF won’t necessarily provide diversification, especially if it is narrowly focused (such as on one industry sector).” Consequently, owning several AI-themed funds may simply multiply the same companies, suppliers or economic assumptions.

Check concentration at three levels:
- Security level: How much of the portfolio moves with each repeated company?
- Industry level: Are software, semiconductors, hardware, cloud infrastructure and related utilities all exposed to one spending cycle?
- Portfolio level: Does the combined technology risk leave enough assets in bonds, cash and other industries for the stated goals?
Automated portfolios can diversify and rebalance, but automation does not make an underlying allocation broad by itself. Review the platform’s holdings, costs and rebalancing assumptions just as you would for a fund you selected manually.
Which implementation is most suitable for a technology allocation?
Compare implementation choices by breadth, overlap, volatility, fees, tax impact, liquidity and the ease of restoring your target weight. The best vehicle is the one whose exposure you can understand and maintain.
| Implementation | Typical breadth | Main trade-off to examine | Useful questions |
|---|---|---|---|
| Broad-market mutual fund or ETF | Many companies across industries and market sizes | May already contain substantial large-cap technology exposure | What are the top holdings and their combined weight? |
| Narrow technology or AI fund | Focused on one sector or theme | Greater concentration and volatility than a broad fund | How many holdings are there, and how much overlap exists with my core funds? |
| Automated diversified portfolio | Depends on the selected model and its underlying funds | Convenience may come with management costs and limited customization | How are technology exposures identified, capped and rebalanced? |
Fees should be assessed alongside trading costs and taxes. A low-expense fund that creates a large taxable gain when you switch may not be cheaper for your circumstances than a slightly more expensive option you can rebalance efficiently. Liquidity also matters if you may need to reduce the position quickly.
How should you rebalance when technology outgrows the plan?
Rebalancing restores the risk level you selected rather than trying to predict the next market move. A winning sector can become a larger share of the portfolio without any new purchase, so compare current weights with your written policy at a regular review.

Use contributions first when practical
Direct new money toward underweight asset classes or industries instead of adding to the position that has grown. This contribution-based approach can reduce the need to sell and may avoid realizing gains, although it does not solve an extreme imbalance quickly.

Sell or switch deliberately
If the exposure exceeds the limit you set, compare the tax cost, transaction fees and liquidity of selling with the risk of leaving it oversized. In taxable accounts, identify the lots and gains before placing an order. In retirement accounts, tax treatment may differ, but fund expenses and trading spreads still matter.
Document the trigger
Your policy can use a calendar review, a tolerance band or another rule you can apply consistently. The exact threshold is personal; the important feature is that it is chosen before market excitement or fear dictates the decision.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What do illustrative allocations show about concentration?
The examples below demonstrate arithmetic, not recommended percentages. Each assumes the investor has already chosen the total stock-and-bond mix and has decided that a technology position is a satellite exposure.
| Illustrative portfolio | Total stocks | Technology sleeve within stocks | Technology share of whole portfolio | Interpretation |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| A | 80% | 10% | 8% | The sector sleeve is 10% of the equity allocation, but 8% of all assets. |
| B | 60% | 20% | 12% | The same investor has less total equity but a larger technology tilt within it. |
| C | 40% | 25% | 10% | A lower stock allocation can offset part of a larger thematic weight, though the sector remains volatile. |
These calculations show why quoting a technology percentage without the surrounding asset mix is incomplete. They also exclude overlap: if a “technology sleeve” repeats holdings already present in the core fund, the effective exposure can be higher than the simple label suggests.
What mistakes make an AI allocation riskier than it appears?
- Counting accounts instead of holdings: Three accounts can own the same companies.
- Assuming an ETF is automatically diversified: A narrow industry fund can have substantial top-holding concentration.
- Ignoring non-technology links: Semiconductors, cloud infrastructure and utilities may share AI-related demand risk.
- Choosing a percentage before a goal: A number detached from the spending date and loss capacity has no reliable meaning.
- Rebalancing without checking taxes and fees: A sale can create gains, commissions or spreads that change the practical decision.
- Adding to winners indefinitely: New contributions should not automatically follow the strongest recent performer.
- Treating automation as a guarantee: A managed model still requires a review of its underlying funds, costs and exposure rules.
When the worksheet reveals an unexpected concentration, pause new purchases in the overlapping holdings, direct contributions elsewhere and evaluate a tax-aware reduction. If the portfolio supports several goals or includes substantial employer stock, individualized advice from a credentialed, fee-based planner can help coordinate the trade-offs.

How can you turn the decision into a maintainable policy?
Write a one-page investment policy that records the purpose of each account, the broad stock-and-bond mix, the maximum thematic exposure, the holdings included in the look-through calculation and the rebalance method. Update it when a goal, job, tax situation or account changes.
At each review, download current fund holdings, recalculate repeated company and industry weights, compare them with the policy and record any action. This process converts AI exposure from an emotional market call into a controlled risk decision.

Does owning several AI ETFs reduce concentration risk?
Not necessarily. Funds can share the same large companies, semiconductor suppliers or cloud businesses, so the combined look-through exposure may be more concentrated than any one fund appears. Compare holdings and weights across all funds before treating them as separate bets.
Can bonds protect a portfolio that is heavy in technology stocks?
Bonds and cash can reduce the portfolio’s overall sensitivity to an equity-sector decline, but they do not insure against losses or guarantee a particular outcome. Their usefulness depends on quality, duration, liquidity and the spending date for the money.
Is dollar-cost averaging a substitute for rebalancing?
No. Regular contributions spread purchase timing, while rebalancing restores the intended mix after prices change. Contributions can be a tax-efficient first step when an asset is underweight, but they may not correct a large excess quickly.
What information should I bring to a financial planner about AI exposure?
Bring current statements for every account, fund fact sheets or holdings files, employer-share details, tax-cost information and the dates and amounts of your goals. A complete inventory lets the planner identify overlap that is invisible when accounts are reviewed separately.
