There is no confirmed final installation size for GTA 6 yet. Take-Two’s October 2026 schedule lists November 19, 2026 for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. Keep about 250–300 GB free as a provisional planning buffer, especially if GTA 6 will be installed on a console that also holds other large games. This is not an official capacity requirement. It is a cautious allowance intended to cover an eventual large install while leaving room for the console’s operating system, patches and ordinary storage management.
The only dependable answer will come from Rockstar or the relevant PlayStation and Xbox store listings when the final package is published. Do not buy a drive solely because a rumor says the game is 210 GB. That number has not been established as an official final installed size.

Why the number is still uncertain
A game can have several different storage figures:
- Download size: the data transferred by the store or launcher. Compression and staged downloading can make this different from the installed files.
- Required free space: the space a platform asks you to have available before installation. Installers may need temporary working room.
- Installed footprint: the space occupied after the installation completes.
- Updates and add-on data: later patches, language packs or downloadable content that can increase the footprint.
Those figures are not interchangeable. Until an official listing identifies which figure applies to GTA 6, a planning range is more honest than a single precise number.
How much space do other large games require?
Two current PC examples show why a large library can consume a drive quickly. Their figures are the publishers’ listed requirements, not independent measurements of a download.

If you plan for GTA 6 alongside those two PC games, add the published requirements first, then keep discretionary space for updates and normal use. The 275 GB total is arithmetic, not a recommendation for a particular drive size. A drive that is technically large enough on paper can become inconvenient once the operating system, applications, saves and patches are included.
Will a 1 TB SSD be enough for GTA 6 and other games?
A 1 TB SSD may be workable for a carefully managed library, but the answer depends on the final GTA 6 requirement, the rest of your installed games and how much free space you want to retain. A 2 TB SSD gives a larger planning margin for a library that includes several 100 GB-plus games, but neither capacity can be declared “enough” for GTA 6 before its official requirement is known.

Use this planning method:
- Write down each game’s current published storage requirement, including GTA 6 once an official figure exists.
- Add those figures together. For example, Baldur’s Gate 3 and Starfield alone total 275 GB from their listed PC requirements.
- Add space for your operating system, launchers, applications and personal files.
- Keep an intentional reserve instead of filling the drive to its final gigabyte. Your reserve is a convenience and update buffer, not a platform rule.
- Recheck the store listing after launch, because patches or optional content can change the amount of space you need.
Do not convert a drive’s advertised capacity directly into game capacity. Formatting, the operating system and existing files reduce what is available to installations. The correct comparison is the free space shown by your own console or PC after setup.
What storage should PS5 owners use?
For playable PS5 games, the relevant upgrade is a compatible internal M.2 SSD. PlayStation Support states: “PS5 games are playable on M.2 SSD storage.” A USB external SSD serves a different purpose: it can store PS5 games, but those games must be moved back to the console’s internal storage or a compatible M.2 SSD before they can be played.

PS5 M.2 checks before buying
- Interface: confirm that the drive uses the interface specified in Sony’s current PS5 guidance.
- Physical dimensions: check the supported length, width and thickness, including any attached heatsink.
- Cooling: the M.2 installation must meet Sony’s clearance and cooling requirements. A drive that fits electrically but not physically is not a valid upgrade.
- Read-speed guidance: compare the manufacturer’s stated performance with Sony’s recommended level rather than assuming every NVMe drive is suitable.
- Capacity: PlayStation’s compatibility guidance covers M.2 SSD capacities from 250 GB to 8 TB. That is a supported range, not a promise that a 250 GB drive will comfortably hold GTA 6 and other large games.
For a GTA 6-sized installation, a very small expansion drive leaves little room for other titles or updates. Choose capacity after adding the games you actually keep installed, and treat the 250–300 GB GTA 6 allowance as a planning figure until Sony’s store page provides the official number.
When an external SSD makes sense on PS5
An external SSD is useful as an archive for PS5 games you are not currently playing. It can reduce the need to redownload a large title, but it is not a substitute for playable M.2 or internal PS5 storage. Keep the copy-back step in mind when comparing the lower cost or larger capacity of external drives.

What storage should Xbox Series X|S owners use?
Xbox’s directly relevant physical upgrade for Series X|S is a purpose-built storage expansion card. Do not treat an ordinary USB SSD as an equivalent replacement for playable expansion-card storage without platform-specific confirmation.
Before buying, identify the exact console model and decide whether the drive is for active games or an archive. The expansion-card route is the straightforward choice when you want additional storage intended for Series X|S games. A generic external SSD may still be considered for other storage tasks only when the console’s current support information confirms the behavior you need.
Capacity planning is the same as on PS5: start with the official game requirements, add your existing library, and leave discretionary free space. The final GTA 6 requirement for Xbox Series X|S remains to be published, so no card size can be labeled definitively sufficient today.
What does the PC situation mean for GTA 6?
GTA 6 is currently announced for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, with November 19, 2026 listed in Take-Two’s October 2026 schedule. PC is absent from that announced platform list. That does not make a larger PC SSD pointless. If your library includes confirmed PC games such as Baldur’s Gate 3 and Starfield, an internal 1 TB or 2 TB NVMe SSD can be relevant, provided your computer has a compatible slot, form factor and budget. Select the drive for the games and applications you can actually install now; do not describe it as a confirmed GTA 6 PC upgrade.
PC compatibility checks
- Confirm that the motherboard or laptop has an available compatible M.2 slot, or choose a supported 2.5-inch SATA drive if that is what the system accepts.
- Check the physical length and mounting screw or bracket before ordering.
- Verify that the operating system can recognize and initialize the drive.
- Leave room for the operating system, launcher files, shader caches, updates and personal data in addition to game requirements.
- Revisit the decision if Rockstar later announces a PC edition with a specific storage figure.
How should you plan free space instead of chasing one number?
Use the largest credible figure available for each game, then add a reserve that matches how often you install and remove titles. Someone who rotates two games can manage a smaller drive than someone who keeps a whole multiplayer library installed, even when both own the same console.

Adding another large title, captures, applications and future patches means the game’s nominal size is only one part of the decision. The practical question is how much free space remains after your current library is installed, not whether the advertised drive capacity is greater than one rumored file size.
Example: the two confirmed PC requirements
Baldur’s Gate 3 lists 150 GB and Starfield lists 125 GB, for 275 GB together. That leaves a substantial portion of a 1 TB-class drive for Windows or another operating system, launchers and additional games, but it does not establish how much room remains on a particular computer. Your installed software and formatted capacity determine the actual free-space figure.

What mistakes cause storage problems?
- Using the rumor as a specification: the approximately 210 GB GTA 6 claim is unverified.
- Confusing compatibility with comfort: a 250 GB M.2 SSD falls within Sony’s supported capacity range, but that does not mean it is a sensible size for a large game library.
- Buying archive storage for active play: on PS5, PS5 games stored on USB must be moved to playable internal or compatible M.2 storage first.
- Assuming every external Xbox drive is equivalent: Series X|S expansion-card storage is the platform-specific path described for the console’s upgrade.
- Counting only the game folder: operating-system files, patches, captures and other applications also consume space.
