Kubernetes on a public cloud has two bills: a management or control-plane charge and the compute, storage, networking, IP-address, and load-balancing resources that run your applications. The cheapest-looking cluster fee is therefore not the same as the cheapest deployment. Amazon EKS adds a per-cluster hourly fee to AWS infrastructure charges; Azure Kubernetes Service (AKS) uses Free, Standard, Premium, and Automatic management experiences; and Google Kubernetes Engine (GKE) charges $0.10 per cluster hour, with a $74.40 monthly credit for one eligible zonal Standard or Autopilot cluster. The figures in this guide are examples from provider pricing pages checked October 26, 2026. Region, currency, support term, discounts, and actual workload usage can change the final invoice.
What does a managed Kubernetes bill include?
A managed Kubernetes bill starts with the provider operating the Kubernetes control plane, but that fee is only one layer. You also pay for the resources scheduled by the cluster and for services that connect it to users and other systems.

- Cluster or control-plane management: the provider runs highly available Kubernetes API and management components and charges either a cluster-hour fee or a selected service tier.
- Compute: worker virtual machines in a node-based service, or requested pod CPU and memory in a pod-based service.
- Storage: persistent disks, block volumes, and ephemeral storage attached to workloads.
- Networking: load balancers, public IPv4 addresses, cross-availability-zone traffic, and data transfer.
- Support premiums: extended Kubernetes-version support or long-term-support options can add to the management price.
Use this model when comparing quotes: total cost = management tier or cluster fee + workload resources + networking and storage + support or optional service premiums. A cluster with no running pods can still incur a management fee, while a low management fee can be overwhelmed by large nodes, disks, or outbound traffic.
How do EKS, AKS, and GKE compare on price?
The providers use different charging units, so a direct “cheapest” ranking is misleading. The table shows the published management model and the workload meter you must include in an estimate.

| Service | Management charge | How application capacity is metered | Important support or credit detail |
|---|---|---|---|
| Amazon EKS | EUR 0.098685 per cluster hour for standard Kubernetes version support on the cited AWS Europe page; EUR 0.592113 per cluster hour for extended support | Separate AWS charges for EC2 worker instances, EBS volumes, public IPv4 addresses, and cross-Availability-Zone traffic | Extended support is a much higher cluster-hour rate and is region- and currency-specific |
| Azure Kubernetes Service | Tier-dependent: Free, Standard, Premium, or Automatic | Underlying Azure virtual machines and other Azure resources; Automatic also manages nodes and infrastructure operations | Free has no SLA; Standard supplies a financially backed API-server uptime SLA; Premium adds long-term support |
| Google Kubernetes Engine | $0.10 per cluster hour for all GKE clusters, regardless of mode, size, or topology | Standard uses Compute Engine node instances; general-purpose Autopilot uses requested pod CPU, memory, and ephemeral storage | $74.40 monthly credit per billing account for one eligible zonal Standard or Autopilot cluster; regional cluster fees and unrelated SKUs are excluded |
All figures in the table are provider-page examples, not universal rates. AWS quotes here are in euros for a Europe page, GKE Autopilot examples are from Iowa, and Azure states that displayed prices are estimates that vary with agreement, purchase date, and exchange rate.
How is Amazon EKS priced?
Amazon Web Services describes EKS as a managed service that runs Kubernetes applications without you managing, securing, or scaling the Kubernetes control plane. AWS then bills the cluster management and the infrastructure your workloads consume as separate line items.
What is the EKS cluster fee?
On the cited AWS Europe pricing page, standard Kubernetes version support is listed at EUR 0.098685 per cluster hour. Extended support is listed at EUR 0.592113 per cluster hour. Treat these as a region- and currency-specific example and re-check the live AWS pricing page before committing to a design; the rate is not a global dollar price.
Which EKS resources add to the bill?
Every EKS estimate should include the worker capacity and the services around it. AWS specifically identifies EC2 instances, EBS volumes, public IPv4 addresses, and cross-Availability-Zone traffic as additional charges. A highly available design that spreads nodes across zones can therefore cost more in both capacity and inter-zone traffic than a single-zone test cluster.
When can EKS extended support matter?
If a cluster remains on a Kubernetes release beyond standard support, the extended-support cluster-hour rate applies. Model that premium for the entire period you intend to defer an upgrade, then compare it with the engineering effort and risk of moving to a supported version. The decision is operational as well as financial: paying for extra support can be reasonable for a controlled upgrade window, but it should not be mistaken for free version coverage.

What does AKS cost at each management tier?
AKS does not present one universal control-plane price in the cited material. Microsoft separates the service into four experiences, and your tier determines the level of SLA, support, and operational automation while Azure resources remain separately billable.

Free tier
The Free tier is intended for experimentation and development. It has no SLA, and Microsoft says you pay only for the underlying resources you create. That makes it useful for a short-lived lab, but it is not a production availability commitment.
Standard tier
Standard is aimed at production workloads that require a guaranteed service level. It provides a financially backed API-server uptime SLA. Your estimate still needs the virtual machines, disks, networking, and other Azure services used by the cluster.
Premium tier
Premium adds long-term support for teams that need to stay on a Kubernetes version longer. Include the tier charge and the infrastructure bill, then compare the premium with the cost of a shorter upgrade cycle. Long-term support can reduce upgrade frequency, but it does not remove node or network costs.
Automatic tier
Automatic is positioned as a more managed production experience. Azure manages nodes and infrastructure operations, which can reduce the amount of day-to-day capacity management your team performs. The convenience changes who operates the resources, not the need to account for the Azure resources consumed by your workloads.

Why is an AKS quote only an estimate?
Microsoft warns that displayed prices can vary by agreement, purchase date, and exchange rate. Use the Azure pricing calculator for a quote tied to your subscription, region, commitment terms, and selected VM and storage types. Do not compare an on-demand calculator result with a discounted AWS or Google commitment and call the result a product-price comparison.
How does GKE pricing differ between Standard and Autopilot?
GKE applies a flat management fee, then meters capacity differently by mode. Standard charges the underlying nodes; general-purpose Autopilot charges the resources requested by each pod.
What is GKE’s cluster-management fee?
Google publishes a $0.10 per cluster hour management fee for every GKE cluster, regardless of mode, size, or topology. GKE also offers a $74.40 monthly free-tier credit per billing account, equivalent to one free Autopilot or zonal Standard cluster per month. The credit does not apply to regional cluster fees or unrelated Google Cloud SKUs.
How are Standard clusters billed?
In Standard mode, node pools are billed through the underlying Compute Engine instances. Your cost follows the number and type of nodes, how long they run, attached storage, and the network services you add. Autoscaling can lower idle capacity, but it can also increase spend during peaks as new instances are created.
How are general-purpose Autopilot workloads billed?
General-purpose Autopilot uses pod-based billing for requested CPU, memory, and ephemeral storage. Google lists Iowa examples of $0.0445 per vCPU-hour, $0.0049225 per GiB-hour of pod memory, and $0.0001389 per GiB-hour of ephemeral SSD storage. Those are regional examples; prices and discounts differ elsewhere. Because billing follows requested resources, oversized pod requests can cost more even when the application is mostly idle.

What if an Autopilot workload selects specific hardware?
Hardware-selected Autopilot workloads use node-based billing plus an Autopilot premium rather than the general-purpose pod meter. Check the workload’s hardware requirement before assuming that every Autopilot deployment has the same unit economics.
What is GKE extended release pricing?
After standard support, an extended-release cluster incurs an additional $0.50 per cluster hour, bringing the total management fee to $0.60 per cluster hour during that period. Include that surcharge for every hour the cluster remains in extended release.
How should I estimate a Kubernetes cluster before deployment?
Build the estimate from the architecture outward instead of multiplying a headline cluster fee by the number of clusters.

Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →- Choose the region and currency. Record the exact region, because the EKS example is a Europe euro price and the Autopilot figures are Iowa examples. Azure also converts estimates according to agreement and exchange rate.
- Select the support posture. Decide whether the cluster stays on standard support, needs EKS extended support, AKS Premium long-term support, or GKE extended release. Put the support period on the same line as its premium.
- Count clusters and hours. Multiply the applicable per-cluster-hour fee by the number of clusters and the hours they remain active. For GKE, apply the eligible $74.40 monthly credit only to the qualifying cluster and billing account.
- Describe workload demand. For node-based services, list VM types, node counts, autoscaling limits, and operating hours. For general-purpose GKE Autopilot, list requested vCPU, memory, and ephemeral storage per pod and expected hours.
- Add state and connectivity. Include EBS or managed disks, persistent volumes, public IPv4 addresses, load balancers, cross-zone traffic, and data transfer. These items are outside the basic management fee.
- Apply commercial terms last. Add reservations, committed-use discounts, savings plans, or spot capacity only after you have an on-demand baseline. Discount eligibility and interruption risk can change the operational decision.
- Validate with the provider calculator. Use the AWS, Azure, or Google Cloud calculator for the selected region and resource types, then compare the result with your billing-account terms before production approval.
Is EKS, AKS, or GKE cheaper?
There is no provider that is always cheapest. GKE has the clearest published management fee and a monthly credit for one eligible cluster; EKS exposes a low standard cluster-hour example but separately bills a broad set of AWS resources; AKS lets you choose between a no-SLA Free experience and paid production-oriented tiers.
For a small development cluster, the AKS Free tier or GKE’s eligible credit may reduce management charges, although the underlying VMs, disks, and networking still determine the bill. For production, compare the complete architecture: node versus pod billing, availability-zone placement, storage, public IPs, traffic, SLA requirements, and the cost of delaying upgrades. A cluster fee alone cannot answer the question.

Which hidden or variable charges most often change the result?
- Idle capacity: provisioned nodes or pod requests remain billable when application utilization is low.
- High availability: additional zones usually mean additional nodes and can introduce cross-zone traffic.
- Public addressing: public IPv4 charges can apply even when compute usage is modest.
- Persistent data: disks and snapshots continue independently of pod lifetimes.
- Traffic patterns: ingress, egress, and cross-zone transfers depend on where clients and services are placed.
- Version policy: extended or long-term support adds a premium when upgrades are deferred.
- Commercial terms: region, currency, contract, reservations, commitments, and spot availability can materially change an otherwise identical design.
Keep a separate line item for each category in your forecast. That makes it possible to identify whether a surprise came from the Kubernetes service itself or from an attached cloud resource.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I run a Kubernetes cluster with no management fee at all?
A management tier or free credit can reduce that layer, but it does not make the surrounding cloud account free. Nodes, disks, IP addresses, load balancers, and data transfer are billed according to the provider and resources you use.
Why might Autopilot cost more than expected when CPU usage is low?
General-purpose Autopilot bills requested pod resources, not only the CPU cycles actually consumed. Requests set too high for CPU, memory, or ephemeral storage can therefore raise the bill even when monitoring shows substantial idle time.
Does a regional cluster qualify for GKE’s $74.40 credit?
The published credit covers one eligible zonal Standard or Autopilot cluster per billing account. Google states that regional cluster fees and unrelated SKUs are excluded, so a regional design should be budgeted separately.
Should I choose AKS Free for a customer-facing application?
Free is described for experimentation and development and has no SLA. A customer-facing workload that needs a financially backed API-server uptime commitment should be evaluated against Standard, while long upgrade windows point toward Premium.
