A typical single-color FDM project costs roughly the price of its filament plus a usually smaller electricity charge. Calculate filament as (grams used ÷ 1,000) × spool price per kilogram, then add electricity as (average watts ÷ 1,000) × print hours × your tariff per kWh. Finally allow for supports, brims, purge lines, failed prints and other waste. For example, a slicer estimate of 100 g of PLA at €17.90 per kilogram costs €1.79 in material; a five-hour print averaging 80 W uses 0.40 kWh, or €0.12 at a €0.30/kWh tariff. The subtotal is €1.91 before waste, labor, depreciation or finishing.

There is no universal price for a 3D-printed project. Geometry, settings, printer design, local electricity rates and the price of your particular spool matter more than a headline average.

How do you calculate the variable cost of a 3D print?

Use the slicer’s filament mass, the actual price you paid for that filament, the print duration and a measured or estimated average power draw. Keep the material and electricity calculations separate until the end so that assumptions remain visible.

Material: (filament grams ÷ 1,000) × spool price per kilogram

Electricity: (average watts ÷ 1,000) × print hours × electricity price per kWh

The electricity unit is kilowatt-hour (kWh), not watt or watt-hour. Divide watts by 1,000 before multiplying by hours. A power-supply label showing 350 W or 500 W is a maximum capacity, not proof that the printer draws that amount throughout a print.

How much does the filament itself cost?

Filament mass and spool price usually determine most of the cost of a single-color project. Enter the grams shown by your slicer and the price of the spool you will actually use, including color, brand, shipping and tax where those charges apply.

Use the slicer’s mass estimate

After slicing, look for a field labeled filament usage, filament weight or material. The number should include the model and any support, brim, raft, skirt or purge material that the slicer has generated. If you change infill, wall count, layer height or support settings, slice again because the mass can change substantially.

Convert grams to a spool price

A 1 kg spool contains 1,000 g. A 100 g estimate therefore uses one-tenth of the listed kilogram price. The following values come from a peer-reviewed 2021 cost model and are useful examples, not current universal retail prices:

Material Study density Study price input Cost of 100 g at that input
PLA 1.24 g/cm³ €17.90/kg €1.79
PETG 1.29 g/cm³ €20.00/kg €2.00

Density matters when a design is specified by volume, but most consumer slicers already convert volume to grams. Do not substitute the historical study prices for your local store price; use them only as clearly dated reference inputs.

How much electricity does a 3D printer use?

Power draw varies with printer architecture, nozzle and bed temperatures, ambient conditions, fans, motion speed and whether the machine is heating or merely holding temperature. The reliable calculation is still (watts ÷ 1,000) × hours × price per kWh, but the watt figure should be an average over the print rather than the power-supply maximum.

Use measured watts when accuracy matters

A 2026 measurement report recorded about 75 W averaged over a three-hour PLA print on a Bambu Lab A1 Mini and about 95 W on a Creality K1. Those are measurements for the cited setups, not guarantees for every machine or profile. At 75 W, three hours equals 0.225 kWh; at 95 W, it equals 0.285 kWh. Multiply each result by your own tariff.

Why print time is a critical input

The European Commission Joint Research Centre notes that a print can take anywhere from minutes to several days depending on the printer, settings, size and geometry. Use the slicer’s time estimate for the duration in the equation, and recognize that a pause, reheating cycle or failed attempt adds time that the original estimate did not include.

What the printer’s heaters and electronics contribute

A component-level model of a 1-hour-1-minute PLA print reported 107.14 Wh of AC energy and 3.83 m of filament. Its reported allocations were 53.20 Wh for bed heating, 46.72 Wh for logic, 32.99 Wh for extruder heating, 23.10 Wh for forced-convection fan operation and 0.76 Wh for the physical energy needed to melt the polymer. These figures describe that model’s accounting boundaries rather than a universal additive recipe, but they show why bed temperature and auxiliary electronics can dominate the energy bill while melting energy itself is small.

What do measured desktop printers actually consume?

A 2024 desktop-FFF study measured the following total energies for individual test runs. Each value belongs to the named printer and test condition; none is a general per-hour constant.

Printer in the study Total energy for its test run

Creality CR10s PRO 0.11675 kWh
Ender 3 V1 0.09375 kWh
Ender 3 V2 0.09100 kWh
Prusa i3 MK3 0.08175 kWh
Raise3D Pro2 0.18975 kWh

The spread is more than threefold, which is why applying one internet average to every printer can misprice a project. A separate 2023 study measured one-hour standby energy from 0.03 to 0.17 kWh across six printers. Include that idle draw, plus a heated enclosure, light or ventilation, when you are comparing an entire workflow rather than only the active print.

What is the cost of a 100 g, five-hour print?

Suppose the slicer predicts 100 g of PLA and five hours. Using the peer-reviewed model’s €17.90/kg PLA input, material is 0.1 × €17.90 = €1.79. If your printer averages 80 W, electricity is 0.08 kW × 5 h = 0.40 kWh. At an illustrative €0.30/kWh tariff, electricity is €0.12 and the variable subtotal is €1.91.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Item Calculation Amount
PLA 100 g ÷ 1,000 × €17.90/kg €1.79
Electricity 80 W ÷ 1,000 × 5 h × €0.30/kWh €0.12
Variable subtotal €1.79 + €0.12 €1.91

The €0.30 tariff is an example only. Replace it with the rate on your bill, and add any waste or failed-print allowance before treating the result as a project budget.

How much extra filament should you budget for waste?

The slicer’s headline model weight is not always the material that leaves your spool. Keep these sources visible rather than hiding them in a rounded percentage:

  • Supports and interfaces: complex overhangs can add more support material than the visible model.
  • Brims, rafts and skirts: adhesion aids consume material even though they are removed.
  • Purge and prime lines: color changes and nozzle purges are waste, especially in multicolor printing.
  • Failed prints: a detached part, clog or power interruption can consume nearly the full planned amount before producing nothing usable.
  • Calibration: first-layer tests, temperature towers and flow checks belong in a recurring project budget.
  • Moisture or contamination: brittle or wet filament can cause a reprint and may make the original estimate misleading.

For a repeatable product, record actual spool mass before and after several successful jobs. That measured difference captures purge and setup waste better than an arbitrary allowance. For a one-off project, list the slicer grams and then add a separate contingency for the likely failure modes of your machine and geometry.

How can you measure your printer’s real electricity cost?

A plug-in power meter is more useful than a power-supply rating because it records the energy drawn at the wall, including heating and electronics.

  1. Plug the meter into the wall outlet and the printer into the meter. Include an enclosure, dryer or other equipment only if you want the cost of that complete setup.
  2. Reset the meter’s accumulated kWh reading before starting the job.
  3. Run a representative print using the same bed temperature, chamber condition, fan behavior and speed profile you normally use.
  4. At completion, record elapsed hours and the meter’s kWh value. Divide kWh by hours to obtain the observed average kilowatts, then multiply by 1,000 for average watts.
  5. Multiply the measured kWh by your electricity tariff. Repeat for a large, small, heated-bed and multicolor job if you need a planning range.

Measure a complete cycle when the printer spends significant time heating before the first layer. Measuring only the steady printing phase understates the energy of short jobs, where warm-up is a larger share.

Which factors make two apparently similar projects cost different amounts?

Compare printers and workflows on the same part using the following axes:

Factor Why it changes cost What to record
Average measured watts Higher draw raises the kWh charge for every hour. Wall-meter average during a complete cycle
Bed and chamber temperature Heating and maintaining hot surfaces can dominate energy use. Setpoints and whether an enclosure is heated
Print duration Time multiplies the average power draw. Slicer estimate and actual elapsed time
Filament price per kilogram The same grams cost different amounts by polymer, color and supplier. Invoice price, shipping and tax
Waste and failure rate Unusable prints consume both material and electricity. Successful jobs divided by attempts; grams discarded
Multicolor and post-processing Purge towers, tool changes, drying, sanding and curing add resources. Purge mass, extra hours and equipment energy

Is 3D printing expensive compared with the finished object?

For many small FDM parts, the plastic and electricity are modest; the variable subtotal in the worked example is under two euros. That does not mean every project is cheap. Large models, engineering polymers, extensive supports, repeated failures and long heated-chamber runs can multiply the material and energy inputs.

A fair comparison with a purchased object should also account for printer depreciation, maintenance parts, nozzle replacement, software or design time, labor, post-processing and the value of a failed attempt. Those are real project costs, but they are not included in a filament-and-electricity calculation unless you deliberately add them.

What should you enter in a personal cost calculator?

For each job, save the following inputs alongside the final estimate:

  • Slicer filament grams, including supports and purge material.
  • Actual spool price per kilogram and the currency, with shipping and tax treatment noted.
  • Measured average watts, or an explicitly labeled estimate.
  • Actual print hours, including warm-up and pauses when applicable.
  • Electricity tariff per kWh and whether the rate varies by time of day.
  • Waste, failed-print and calibration allowance.
  • Optional overheads such as depreciation, labor, finishing and maintenance.

Then calculate material and electricity independently, add the waste allowance, and report the result as a range when power or failure behavior is uncertain. This makes a quote auditable: another person can replace the spool price or tariff without rebuilding the whole estimate.

What is the practical answer for most projects?

Start with the slicer’s grams and your real spool price; that is usually the dominant variable cost for a single-color print. Add wall-meter electricity when you need accuracy, because measured desktop printers differ widely and the bed and electronics can consume more energy than polymer melting. Treat every published wattage, price and energy figure as conditional on its printer, settings, date and region rather than as a universal rate.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does leaving a 3D printer on overnight add much to the bill?

It can, particularly if the machine remains heated or spends hours in standby. Standby measurements in one 2023 study ranged from 0.03 to 0.17 kWh for one hour across six printers, so measure your own idle mode instead of assuming it is zero.

Should I calculate filament by length or by weight?

Weight is the dependable basis for costing because spool prices are normally quoted per kilogram and slicers report grams. Length can be useful for checking whether a spool is loaded correctly, but it requires a known diameter and material density.

Why did my short print use nearly as much electricity as a long one?

A short job spends a larger share of its cycle heating the bed and nozzle, while a long job spreads that warm-up energy over more hours. Bed temperature, ambient temperature and the printer’s control electronics can therefore outweigh the model’s small melting-energy requirement.

How should I price a multicolor print?

Use the grams and kilogram price for every loaded material, then add purge, prime and waste material shown by the slicer. Measure electricity for the multicolor profile separately because tool changes and longer run time can change the average draw.

Product prices and availability are accurate as of the date/time indicated and are subject to change. Any price and availability information displayed on Amazon at the time of purchase will apply.
