Xbox Cloud Gaming typically uses about 3.6 to 13.5 decimal GB per hour for a sustained stream. A useful planning estimate is 6.75 GB per hour at 15 Mbps, 9 GB per hour at 20 Mbps, or 13.5 GB per hour at 30 Mbps. The actual total changes with adaptive bitrate, resolution, device, connection quality, location and on-screen activity, so these are planning ceilings rather than a single Microsoft-published hourly rate.
For a 10 GB mobile allowance, that means roughly 1.5 hours at 15 Mbps and less than 45 minutes at 30 Mbps, before protocol overhead and other device traffic. If you play for an hour every day at 15 Mbps, the stream alone would total about 202.5 GB over 30 days.

How much data does Xbox Cloud Gaming use per hour?
The answer depends mainly on the stream’s bitrate. Xbox Cloud Gaming sends a continuous video stream instead of downloading the whole game, so a higher-quality stream consumes more data. Published bitrate limits translate to approximately 3.6–13.5 decimal GB per hour:
| Stream setting or ceiling | Bitrate used for estimate | Estimated data per hour | What the figure represents |
|---|---|---|---|
| Manual 720p HQ | 8 Mbps | About 3.6 GB | A lower-resolution, high-quality 720p setting |
| Essential or Premium 1080p | 15 Mbps | About 6.75 GB | A practical planning point for a 1080p stream on those tiers |
| Manual 1080p HQ | 18 Mbps | About 8.1 GB | A higher-bitrate 1080p preset |
| 1080p ceiling | 20 Mbps | About 9 GB | An upper-limit estimate for a 1080p stream |
| Ultimate, highest quality, up to 1440p | 30 Mbps | About 13.5 GB | The largest listed quality ceiling; availability and resolution depend on the client and game |
These are decimal gigabytes, where 1 GB is 1,000 megabytes. They are calculations from bitrate ceilings, not guaranteed usage for every session. An Xbox Insider report described presets from roughly 3 GB per hour to 14 GB per hour across 720p, 1080p and 1440p, with Auto mode changing the stream to suit the connection and device.

How are the hourly Xbox Cloud Gaming figures calculated?
Bitrate is measured in megabits per second (Mbps), while your mobile or broadband allowance is usually shown in gigabytes. Convert one to the other with this formula:
Mbps × 3,600 seconds ÷ 8 = megabytes per hour
Megabytes per hour ÷ 1,000 = decimal gigabytes per hour
For example, a 15 Mbps stream transfers 15 × 3,600 ÷ 8 = 6,750 megabytes in an hour, or 6.75 GB. At 30 Mbps, the same calculation gives 13,500 megabytes, or 13.5 GB.
The calculation assumes the stream holds that bitrate for the entire hour. Real traffic can be lower because adaptive streaming may reduce bitrate during simpler scenes or when the network cannot sustain the maximum. It can also be slightly higher on a carrier or router’s meter because of transport and protocol overhead, background traffic, and rounding.
Which Xbox Cloud Gaming settings use the most data?
Resolution and bitrate move together: a sharper stream needs more bits to preserve detail, especially during fast movement. The highest listed ceiling is the Ultimate quality mode, which can reach 30 Mbps and up to 1440p; a 1080p stream at 20 Mbps is the next major planning point.

Resolution is only part of the difference
Two sessions at the same nominal resolution can transfer different amounts. A manually selected 1080p HQ preset at 18 Mbps estimates to 8.1 GB per hour, while a 20 Mbps 1080p ceiling estimates to 9 GB. The bitrate, not the pixel count alone, determines the data calculation.

The published figures associate 15 Mbps 1080p streaming with Essential and Premium plans and up to 30 Mbps, 1440p quality with Ultimate. A device, browser or app may impose a lower limit, so having a higher tier does not force every session to use the maximum.
Auto mode can reduce or vary usage
Auto mode adapts to the available connection and the device. It may lower bitrate to prevent buffering or raise it when conditions improve. That makes Auto useful for playability, but it means your carrier’s hourly total will not be identical from one session to the next.
What internet speed does Xbox recommend?
Xbox’s current FAQ says: Best performance will be achieved at rates of 10 Mbps on mobile devices, 20 Mbps on consoles, PCs and tablets, and 5Ghz WiFi or mobile data connection.
Those numbers describe the connection speed needed for a responsive stream; they are not monthly data allowances and do not directly promise a fixed GB-per-hour total. Xbox also notes that performance varies with the connection, location, device and other factors.

- Mobile devices: plan for at least 10 Mbps for best performance.
- Consoles, PCs and tablets: plan for at least 20 Mbps.
- Wireless connection: 5 GHz Wi-Fi is recommended where available; mobile data is also supported.
A connection can meet the speed recommendation and still use less data than the matching ceiling if the client adapts downward. Conversely, an unstable connection can produce a poor experience even when a speed test briefly shows a high result.
How long will a 10 GB allowance last?
Divide the allowance by the estimated hourly rate. The following figures assume one continuous stream and no other use of the allowance:
| Planning rate | Estimated hourly use | Approximate play time from 10 GB |
|---|---|---|
| 8 Mbps | 3.6 GB/h | About 2 hours 47 minutes |
| 15 Mbps | 6.75 GB/h | About 1 hour 29 minutes |
| 18 Mbps | 8.1 GB/h | About 1 hour 14 minutes |
| 20 Mbps | 9 GB/h | About 1 hour 7 minutes |
| 30 Mbps | 13.5 GB/h | About 44 minutes |
The 15 Mbps estimate is why a 10 GB plan is often described as lasting about 1.5 hours of cloud play. At the 30 Mbps ceiling, it lasts under 45 minutes. Leave room for overhead and for the phone’s other traffic instead of scheduling play right up to the mathematical limit.
What happens if I play every day on mobile data?
At 15 Mbps, one hour per day for 30 days is 6.75 × 30 = 202.5 GB. That is the game stream alone; app updates, video, social feeds, tethered devices and other background use are additional.
At 30 Mbps, the same one-hour daily habit would be 405 GB in 30 days. At 8 Mbps, it would be about 108 GB. These totals show why an apparently large monthly allowance can disappear quickly when cloud gaming becomes a daily activity.

How can I estimate and control my own Xbox Cloud Gaming usage?
- Identify the allowance that actually applies. Check whether your carrier limit covers the phone, hotspot or both, and note the billing-cycle reset date. An ISP may also impose a home-broadband cap.
- Choose a conservative planning rate. Use 15 Mbps (6.75 GB/h) for a typical 1080p estimate, 20 Mbps (9 GB/h) for a 1080p ceiling, or 30 Mbps (13.5 GB/h) when planning for the highest-quality Ultimate stream. If you expect Auto mode to reduce quality, treat the result as a maximum rather than a promise.
- Convert the allowance to hours. Divide remaining gigabytes by the selected GB-per-hour figure. Recalculate after each long session rather than relying on an all-month estimate.
- Use Wi-Fi when practical. A 5 GHz Wi-Fi connection can avoid cellular charges, although the home’s ISP allowance may still apply. Keep the device close enough to the access point for a stable signal.
- Watch the operating system’s data counter. iOS and Android provide per-app cellular-use reports, while Windows and many routers show usage by device. Menu names vary by operating-system version, so reset the counter at the start of your billing cycle and compare it with the carrier’s meter.
- Close the session when you finish. End cloud play rather than leaving the client connected in the background. Also account for automatic updates, cloud backups and other devices sharing a hotspot.
Where a client offers a manual quality choice, a lower preset can make a capped plan last longer. If no quality selector is available, Auto mode is the safer choice for maintaining a playable stream, but monitor the resulting usage instead of assuming a fixed rate.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why can two hours of play use different amounts of data?
- Adaptive bitrate: the service can change video bitrate as network conditions and device capabilities change.
- Connection quality: packet loss, congestion and Wi-Fi interference can trigger a lower stream rate or repeated traffic.
- Device and location: Xbox identifies these as factors in performance, and clients do not all expose the same quality options.
- On-screen complexity: rapid camera movement, particles and detailed scenes are harder to compress than static menus.
- Non-game traffic: a phone or hotspot may be transferring updates, backups, messaging media or another device’s traffic at the same time.
For budgeting, use a ceiling from the table and treat any lower measured average as a bonus. A single short session is not enough to establish your personal rate; measure several sessions under the conditions in which you normally play.
Is the extra data for 1440p worth it?
That is a screen-size and allowance decision. On a large monitor or television, the additional detail of a higher-quality stream may be noticeable; on a small phone, the visual difference may be harder to see while the data cost can approach twice the 15 Mbps estimate. If your plan is capped, 1080p or Auto generally gives more playing time per gigabyte than targeting the 30 Mbps ceiling.

Remember that “up to 1440p” describes the highest supported output in the listed Ultimate quality mode, not a guarantee that every game, browser or device will deliver 1440p continuously. The actual stream can remain below that ceiling.
What does the older Android measurement tell us?
A historical Android measurement recorded 590 MB over 15 minutes, which works out to an estimated 2.36 GB per hour at roughly 5.2 Mbps. That is below the current upper-limit planning figures and demonstrates why an older or lower-bitrate client can use considerably less data than a 15–30 Mbps calculation.

It should not be treated as a current universal average. Client versions, quality presets, network conditions and games have changed, and the measurement represents one Android session rather than every device or subscription tier.
Why does this matter more now?
Xbox Wire reported that cloud-gaming hours were up 45% year over year as of December 19, 2025. Growth in total playing time does not change the bitrate math, but it makes data-cap planning more important: more people are using a service whose continuous video stream can consume several gigabytes in a single hour.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does Xbox Cloud Gaming use mobile data when I use a hotspot?
Yes. The hotspot’s carrier normally counts the cloud-gaming stream as data for the phone and any connected device. A hotspot may also carry traffic from other devices, so its total can exceed the Xbox session estimate; check the carrier’s hotspot counter separately when it is available.
Are decimal GB and GiB the same thing in a data-plan app?
No. The estimates here use decimal gigabytes, with 1 GB equal to 1,000 MB. Some operating systems report bytes using binary units or label them differently, so a device counter and a carrier bill can appear slightly different even when they measured the same traffic.
Why is my carrier’s number higher than the Xbox Cloud Gaming estimate?
The table describes the game stream, while a carrier meter may include protocol overhead, background applications, system services and traffic from tethered devices. Compare the carrier total with the device’s per-app counter during a controlled session to isolate the stream more accurately.
Can I leave a cloud-gaming session paused without using data?
There is no single published paused-session rate. If the client remains connected, it may continue exchanging stream or control traffic, so close the cloud-gaming session when you are finished rather than treating a paused screen as an offline game.
