Meta’s AI spending can pressure earnings and free cash flow before it produces measurable revenue, because servers and data centers require large cash payments up front while qualifying assets are depreciated over several years. The investment could still increase long-term value if additional computing capacity improves ad recommendations, raises advertising yields, supports new AI products, or protects Meta’s competitive position. Meta reported strong FY2025 results, but it also entered 2026 planning a much larger infrastructure program. The key questions are how quickly capacity is used, how much of the spending becomes recurring operating cost, and whether the resulting cash flows exceed the cost of capital. No disclosure cited here establishes a fair stock price or proves that the investment will earn an adequate return.
How does Meta’s AI spending reach the income statement?
The immediate cash payment for servers, networking equipment, and data-center construction is not usually recorded as an equal-sized expense in the purchase year. Meta generally capitalizes qualifying property and equipment, records the cash in investing activities, and recognizes depreciation as those assets are placed in service. Other AI-related costs, including infrastructure operations, third-party cloud capacity, and employee compensation, are expensed as incurred.

When a server or facility qualifies as a long-lived asset, its cost is placed on the balance sheet. Depreciation then allocates that cost across the asset’s useful life. The exact lives, placed-in-service dates, and depreciation methods must be taken from Meta’s accounting disclosures before building a precise earnings model. A large purchase can therefore reduce cash immediately while affecting operating income gradually.
Operating costs can arrive before revenue
Power, maintenance, networking, technical support, leased capacity, and cloud services can rise as Meta runs more AI workloads. Those costs do not wait for a new product to generate sales. Compensation also matters: Meta’s January 2026 outlook identified employee compensation, infrastructure operating expenses, and higher depreciation as drivers of expense growth.

Why timing makes quarterly results noisy
Construction schedules, equipment deliveries, and the date a data center becomes operational determine when depreciation starts. A quarter with heavy purchases but limited assets placed in service may show a sharp cash outflow without the full depreciation charge; a later quarter can show rising depreciation even if capital spending temporarily slows. Analysts should therefore compare several quarters and reconcile cash purchases, capitalized assets, depreciation, and utilization rather than infer performance from one period.
What did Meta report for FY2025?
Meta’s FY2025 results provide the starting point for judging whether the company can finance a larger AI build-out. These are reported figures, not forecasts:

Meta’s segment results also show where the funding capacity came from. Family of Apps generated $102.469 billion of operating income in FY2025, while Reality Labs reported a $19.193 billion operating loss. The consolidated advertising business therefore supplied most of the operating profit that can support AI infrastructure, while Reality Labs remained a separate drag on earnings.
How much is Meta planning to spend on AI infrastructure?
Meta’s 2026 capital-expenditure guidance moved upward during the year, so the date and source of each range matter:
| Guidance | Amount | Status and qualification |
|---|---|---|
| January 2026 outlook | $115–135 billion | Initial 2026 capex forecast in Meta’s FY2025 results materials |
| After Q1 2026 | $125–145 billion | Increase reported by the Associated Press; mainly higher component prices and, to a lesser extent, additional data-center costs |

The $130–145 billion figure is the latest range surfaced in the available materials, not a confirmed current-year endpoint. No official Q3 2026 release was located in the material used for this article, so readers should check Meta’s latest SEC filing and investor-relations update before treating any range as current. Meta’s January outlook also projected total 2026 expenses of $162–169 billion, including the infrastructure, depreciation, operating, and compensation pressures described above.

These capex figures can differ from a narrower property-and-equipment cash-purchase line because Meta may include principal payments on finance leases and other items in its preferred capital-expenditure measure. Any comparison with another company or an earlier year should use the same definition.
What happens to Meta’s cash flow when capex rises?
Higher AI investment reduces free cash flow initially because the cash leaves the company before the assets generate incremental operating cash. In FY2025, Meta reported $115.8 billion of operating cash flow and $72.22 billion of capital expenditures including finance-lease principal payments. A simple subtraction produces approximately $43.58 billion, but that is an analytical approximation, not a company-reported free-cash-flow figure and may not match Meta’s definition.
Investing cash flow takes the first hit
Purchases of property and equipment are investing outflows. FY2025 net cash used in investing activities was $102.003 billion, a broader total that includes items beyond equipment purchases. As capex rises toward the 2026 guidance ranges, investing outflows can consume a larger share of operating cash even if advertising collections remain strong.
Operating cash flow depends on the ad business
Operating cash flow reflects net income plus non-cash charges such as depreciation and working-capital movements. Depreciation can increase operating cash flow under the indirect method because it is added back, but that accounting add-back does not refund the original cash purchase. Sustained cash generation still depends on revenue growth, ad pricing, payment timing, compensation, power costs, and other operating expenses.
Funding choices affect risk
Meta can fund construction from cash on hand and operating cash, issue debt, sell investments, or reduce shareholder returns. Each choice changes the valuation risk: borrowing adds interest expense and refinancing exposure; using cash reduces liquidity; and cutting buybacks changes per-share capital allocation. The cited disclosures do not establish a required financing mix for the 2026 program.

Can AI infrastructure increase Meta’s revenue or margins?
It can, but the return depends on what the capacity does after it is installed. More computing power may improve ranking and recommendation systems, help advertisers target or create campaigns, support generative-AI assistants, or enable paid products. Better recommendations can increase time spent and ad impressions; better ad prediction can raise conversion rates and pricing. Those are economic channels, not guaranteed outcomes.
Advertising efficiency is the earliest potential payoff
Meta can monetize AI without selling a separate AI subscription if models improve the core advertising auction. The relevant evidence would include revenue growth, ad impressions, price per ad, conversion or engagement measures, and management commentary tying changes to recommendation or ranking improvements. Higher infrastructure costs are justified only if incremental gross profit eventually exceeds depreciation and operating costs.
New products may take longer
Consumer assistants, business messaging agents, creator tools, and other AI services could require additional research, safety work, and customer adoption before producing material revenue. During that period, compute usage and staffing can rise while monetization remains uncertain. Investors should separate proven advertising benefits from aspirational product plans.
Utilization determines the economics
A data center running near capacity spreads fixed costs across more workloads. Underused servers still incur depreciation, leases, power, and maintenance. Management’s expected timing of capacity utilization is therefore as important as the headline capex number.
Will Meta’s AI spending hurt earnings in 2026?
Near-term earnings could be pressured even if the investment is strategically sound. Meta’s own January outlook pointed to higher depreciation, infrastructure operating expenses, and employee compensation, while the capex range later moved higher. The size of the earnings effect depends on how much equipment is placed in service during 2026, the useful lives assigned to it, and whether advertising revenue grows fast enough to absorb the additional costs.

A useful earnings bridge separates four items: revenue and gross-profit gains from better ads or new products; depreciation on newly operational assets; cash operating costs such as power and cloud services; and compensation or other research costs. Combining all infrastructure spending into one “AI expense” obscures these different schedules.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How should investors analyze the stock valuation impact?
Capex does not mechanically produce a higher or lower valuation multiple. Valuation is an estimate of future cash flows adjusted for risk, growth, and the discount rate. The same $140 billion investment could destroy value if utilization and monetization disappoint, or create value if it produces durable advertising gains and defensible products.
Start with a cash-flow forecast
Model revenue growth, operating margin, taxes, working capital, capital expenditures, and depreciation separately. Treat the 2026 capex range as a scenario rather than a single point estimate. Include a ramp in maintenance spending after the build-out; a data center may require continuing replacement and expansion capital even after the initial construction surge.
Test return on invested capital
Compare incremental operating profit after tax with the capital invested in servers and facilities. The comparison should use the period when assets are productive, not the purchase date. If returns remain below Meta’s cost of capital, growth can reduce shareholder value even while reported revenue increases.
Adjust for risk and competition
Discount rates should reflect execution risk, chip supply and pricing, energy availability, regulatory limits on data and AI products, and the possibility that competing platforms make today’s hardware less valuable before its accounting life ends. Rapid hardware obsolescence can also create impairment or accelerated replacement risk that a straight-line depreciation schedule does not capture.
Best Value
Do not infer a price target from these figures
Meta’s FY2025 revenue, earnings, cash flow, and capex guidance do not provide a fair-value conclusion by themselves. A price target would require assumptions about long-term growth, margins, share count, net cash or debt, terminal value, and the appropriate discount rate. Those assumptions are not established by the reported figures above.
What could make the investment pay off or fail?
- Potential upside: higher ad relevance and conversion, more engagement from recommendation systems, paid AI services, improved developer or business tools, and high utilization of new data-center capacity.
- Margin pressure: depreciation starts before revenue scales, while power, networking, cloud, and support costs recur every quarter.
- Execution risk: construction delays, component-price inflation, scarce electricity, or difficulty recruiting specialized employees can raise cost per unit of capacity.
- Technology risk: more efficient models or a shift in workload demand could make planned hardware excessive or shorten useful lives.
- Regulatory and legal risk: privacy, copyright, competition, safety, or energy rules could limit monetization or require additional spending.
- Capital-allocation risk: debt-funded expansion increases interest exposure, while cash-funded expansion reduces flexibility for buybacks, acquisitions, or downturns.

1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches- Confirm the latest annual and quarterly capex definition, including whether finance-lease principal payments are included.
- Record property-and-equipment purchases, assets placed in service, depreciation expense, and disclosed useful lives.
- Compare operating cash flow with investing outflows and calculate any free-cash-flow measure using the company’s stated definition.
- Track revenue, ad impressions, price per ad, operating margin, and expense growth for evidence that AI is improving monetization.
- Review infrastructure operating costs, compensation, and any cloud or lease commitments.
- Check cash, debt, interest expense, share repurchases, and other funding decisions.
- Read management’s comments about utilization, delivery timing, expected returns, and changes to guidance.
- Separate fiscal-year actuals, quarterly actuals, and forward guidance; do not compare unlike periods or unlike capex definitions.
Meta founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg said in the January 28, 2026 FY2025 results release, "We had strong business performance in 2025," and, "I’m looking forward to advancing personal superintelligence for people around the world in 2026." Those statements describe management’s priorities and confidence, not independent evidence that the spending will earn a sufficient return.
What is the practical conclusion for shareholders?
Meta’s AI build-out is a trade-off between near-term financial strain and potential long-term operating gains. Cash flow is affected first through large investing outflows; earnings follow through depreciation and recurring infrastructure and compensation costs. The investment improves valuation only if additional capacity produces durable, risk-adjusted cash flows that exceed its cost. Until utilization, monetization, and the final 2026 guidance are clearer, the responsible conclusion is to treat the program as a high-stakes scenario rather than assume either an inevitable earnings collapse or a guaranteed payoff.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is Meta’s capex guidance the same as its AI spending?
No. The capex range covers capital investments such as servers and data centers, while AI-related spending also includes operating costs, cloud capacity, research, safety work, and employee compensation. Those expenses follow different accounting and cash-flow schedules.
Why can depreciation rise even when Meta’s capex falls in a quarter?
Depreciation begins when completed assets are placed in service and continues over their useful lives. A quarter with fewer new purchases can still have higher depreciation if a large earlier build-out became operational.
Recommended Free Tools
What would show that Meta is underusing its AI infrastructure?
Look for management disclosures about utilization alongside rising depreciation, power, and maintenance costs. Slower revenue or ad-performance gains despite expanding capacity would also suggest that the assets are not yet earning attractive returns.
How should I compare Meta’s capex with another technology company’s spending?
First reconcile definitions: include or exclude finance-lease principal payments consistently, and distinguish property-and-equipment purchases from total investing cash flow. Then compare operating cash flow, depreciation, useful lives, margins, utilization timing, and monetization outcomes for the same fiscal periods.
