Mars rovers estimate distance by combining wheel-rotation counts with inertial measurements, then use images of the ground to check how far the vehicle actually moved. The wheel-based estimate is quick, but spinning wheels can slip without carrying the rover forward. Visual odometry—matching rocks, shadows, and other terrain features in successive images—helps detect that difference. A separate process can correct the rover’s position on a map, but that is not the same as counting distance traveled. Mars has no GPS satellite network, so the rover must build and update its own estimates as it drives.

How does a Mars rover know how far it has driven?

It estimates motion from wheel rotation, uses inertial measurements to orient that motion, and checks the estimate against changes in the surrounding terrain seen by its cameras. No single measurement answers every navigation question: wheel encoders report how much the wheels turned, visual odometry estimates movement relative to nearby ground, and map localization estimates where the rover is in a broader reference frame.

That distinction matters because “distance traveled” is not the same as either displacement or location. Distance traveled is the accumulated length of the route driven. Displacement is the change between the rover’s starting and ending positions. Global location is where it sits on a map. A rover that drives in a loop can accumulate substantial distance but end near its starting point; it can also estimate local movement while becoming less certain of its map position.

There is no GPS satellite network around Mars to give a rover a continuous Earth-style location fix. Instead, it estimates its movement onboard from its sensors and can use visual observations to correct or refine those estimates. The result is a running navigation estimate, not a perfect external measurement of every meter of ground covered.

What do wheel encoders and inertial sensors measure?

Wheel encoders register wheel rotation. If a wheel turns through a known angle, the rover can estimate how far its tread would have traveled over the ground if it rolled without slipping. That gives the vehicle a rapid, internal estimate of motion.

An inertial measurement unit helps orient the estimate. As the rover changes heading or crosses uneven ground, the vehicle needs to know the direction in which wheel motion should be projected. Combining wheel-distance estimates with attitude and direction measurements lets the rover build a path estimate rather than merely adding up rotations.

These readings are useful, but they do not prove that the ground moved beneath the wheels. A wheel can rotate in loose sand, scrape against a slope, or slip while the rover makes little forward progress. The distance implied by the rotation then exceeds the distance the vehicle actually traveled. That is why wheel odometry is an estimate with an important assumption—not a tape measure laid along the Martian surface.

A 2020 NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory paper describes Curiosity’s nominal inertial-attitude and wheel-distance estimates at 8 Hz during the observation period covered by the paper. That is a documented configuration for Curiosity in that context, not a universal sampling rate for every rover or every drive. The same paper describes visual-odometry position updates as less frequent than those nominal estimates. JPL’s 2020 rover-navigation paper explains the relationship between the measurements.

How does visual odometry tell whether the rover really moved?

Visual odometry estimates rover movement by comparing images of terrain taken from different positions. The rover’s stereo navigation cameras capture recognizable points—such as rocks, shadows, or patterns in wheel tracks—and software matches those features in later images. Their apparent change in position provides an independent estimate of the rover’s motion relative to the nearby ground.

That second estimate helps expose slip. If wheel rotation predicts a substantial advance but the matched terrain shows little change, the rover may be spinning its wheels rather than progressing. When the wheel-based and image-based estimates agree, the ground-relative motion is better supported than it would be by wheel rotation alone. Visual odometry still depends on having usable features to match, so it complements rather than makes the other sensors irrelevant.

Curiosity’s tracks can themselves provide recognizable patterns. NASA has noted that the rover wheels imprint “JPL” in Morse code, which can help create track features for matching where other terrain details are sparse. Rocks and shadows can also serve as landmarks; the method does not require a prepared road or a permanent marker placed on Mars.

Slip can be severe. The 2020 JPL paper records one drive with 98.7% wheel slip and no forward progress. That is an extreme documented case, not a typical slip rate or a claim about ordinary rover performance. JPL’s paper distinguishes wheel-slip and rover-slip fractions, terms that describe different aspects of wheel motion and vehicle progress.

How do distance, route planning, and map location differ?

Route planning chooses where the rover should try to drive; odometry estimates how it moved; localization estimates where it is. These jobs cooperate, but one does not replace the others. A route planner can select a path around a hazard without measuring the final distance traveled, while a distance estimate can accumulate even as uncertainty about the rover’s absolute map position grows.

Perseverance’s AutoNav can adjust a route autonomously to avoid hazards. NASA reported in October 2026 that more than 90% of Perseverance’s total distance had been covered using AutoNav. That describes the share of its travel made with that navigation capability, not the accuracy of its distance measurement. NASA’s October 2026 distance milestone reports the figure.

Perseverance also gained a broader location correction in 2026. Mars Global Localization compares a navigation-camera panorama with terrain maps made from orbital images. It can correct accumulated uncertainty about where the rover is on the map; it does not replace the wheel-versus-image method used to estimate motion during a drive.

NASA said the system first worked in regular operations on February 2, 2026. NASA/JPL reported that localization takes about two minutes and has precision of about 10 inches (25 centimeters). In a retrospective test reported by NASA, the algorithm correctly localized 264 of 264 previous rover stops. Those are reported performance figures for the algorithm and that test, not guaranteed precision or success for every future drive. NASA also said ordinary visual-odometry errors can accumulate until location uncertainty on long drives exceeds 100 feet (up to 35 meters). The orbital-map comparison addresses that broader uncertainty. NASA’s account of Perseverance’s Mars Global Localization system describes the update and its reported results.

How have rover distance-measuring methods changed?

Later rover systems build on the same basic need: estimate motion, recognize when wheel rotation is misleading, and keep the vehicle’s position useful for navigation. The techniques have expanded from visual checks of nearby terrain to a separate map-based correction for accumulated location uncertainty.

Rover or capability What the cited NASA account establishes How to interpret it
Spirit and Opportunity NASA’s JPL account identifies them as the first Mars rovers to demonstrate visual odometry, tracking nearby terrain features to measure slippage. Visual terrain matching became a way to check wheel-based motion.
Curiosity JPL says visual odometry was used on more than 90% of drives after an update in the rover’s third mission year. JPL reports convergence on 99.6% of its first 20,682 attempts. These are historical figures from JPL’s project account, not a current success rate.
Perseverance Perseverance uses visual odometry and, beginning in regular operations on February 2, 2026, Mars Global Localization for map-position correction. Local motion estimation and broader map localization address related but different uncertainties.

The Curiosity percentages and attempt count come from an undated JPL project account; they describe that account’s historical reporting rather than a rate that should be applied to every rover or drive. JPL’s surface-navigation overview describes visual odometry across rover missions.

How far have NASA’s Mars rovers driven?

Published mileage is a dated odometer milestone, not a live counter that should be repeated without its observation date. NASA’s October 11, 2026 figures show Perseverance just ahead of Opportunity, with Curiosity also having traveled more than 23 miles.

Rover Distance reported by NASA Date and qualification
Perseverance 28.10 miles (45.22 kilometers) Odometer milestone on October 11, 2026
Opportunity 28.06 miles (45.16 kilometers) Total distance reported in the October 2026 milestone announcement
Curiosity More than 23.65 miles (38.07 kilometers) As of October 11, 2026

NASA announced that Perseverance exceeded Opportunity’s reported total on October 11, 2026. The figures should stay tied to that date; they are not October 31 readings or guaranteed current totals. NASA’s announcement of the distance milestone gives the dated odometer figures.

What should you remember about rover mileage?

A rover’s distance total is built from onboard estimates, with wheel rotation providing a fast motion signal and visual odometry helping determine whether the vehicle actually advanced over the terrain. Inertial measurements orient the motion estimate. Map localization is a further layer that can address accumulated uncertainty about where the rover is, while route-planning software chooses a path rather than serving as a distance sensor.

For any mileage figure, check the rover and the date NASA attached to it. For any claim about accuracy, check whether it refers to wheel travel, terrain-relative motion, or map location: they are different quantities, and a number for one should not be presented as a measure of the others.

Frequently Asked Questions

How often does a Mars rover use visual odometry?

There is no single sampling rate established for every rover. A 2020 JPL paper describes Curiosity’s nominal wheel-distance and inertial-attitude estimates at 8 Hz during its observation period, with visual-odometry position updates less frequently.

What is the difference between wheel slip and rover slip?

They are distinct quantities in JPL’s engineering account: wheel slip concerns wheel rotation that does not translate into expected ground travel, while rover slip concerns the vehicle’s progress. The paper reports a drive with 98.7% wheel slip and no forward progress, illustrating why the terms should not be treated as interchangeable.

Does Mars Global Localization count how far Perseverance has driven?

No. NASA describes it as matching a navigation-camera panorama with orbital terrain maps to correct the rover’s map position. Its role is to address accumulated location uncertainty, rather than act as a wheel-rotation counter.

Can AutoNav tell NASA the rover’s mileage?

AutoNav helps Perseverance choose or adjust a traversable route around hazards; it is not itself an odometer. NASA’s reported share of distance driven with AutoNav describes how the rover navigated, not measurement accuracy.
