Look First is an observation-first AI concept: instead of naming a plant or animal the moment you ask, it gives you three small things to notice, darkens the display for about two minutes, and reveals an identification afterward. The example prompts include tracing a leaf edge, touching bark and listening for a call. That sequence could make an identification request less screen-heavy, but there is no published measurement showing that Look First reduces phone use, improves identification accuracy or prevents injuries. The project author, hiya_24477, describes the idea in a DEV Community post as a browser project built around an open-weight Gemma model.

What is Look First?

Look First is a design concept for using AI on a walk without making the phone the main activity. Its premise is simple: observation should happen before identification. A walker first writes a sentence describing the surroundings, receives three brief sensory tasks, spends an eyes-up interval away from the display, and only then gets an identification.

The concept comes from hiya_24477’s Week 1 “Touch Grass” entry in the DEV Hacktoberfest Open-Source AI Challenge. The post is titled “Your Phone Is the Worst Part of a Walk. So I Built an AI That Hides It.” The wording is the author’s framing, not a measured ranking of everything that can distract someone outdoors. The post’s publication year was not established, and its full page was not available for independent inspection.

The author says Look First “measures success by how little you use it.” That is a design criterion or aspiration, not a published usage statistic. Nothing in the available material establishes how often people complete the prompts, how accurate its identifications are, or whether it changes behavior over repeated walks.

How does the Look First sequence work?

The reported interaction has four stages. It is deliberately different from the usual “point, tap and get an answer” pattern.

  1. Describe the scene. The walker supplies a sentence about what is nearby. The available excerpt does not establish whether that sentence is typed, spoken, or entered by another method.
  2. Receive three observation tasks. The examples include examining the edge of a leaf, touching tree bark and listening for a call. These are prompts to gather details with your senses, not instructions to stare at a live camera feed.
  3. Put the display aside. The screen darkens during an eyes-up interval described as two minutes. The excerpt does not say whether that duration can be changed, paused or extended.
  4. Get the identification afterward. The answer is intentionally delayed until the observation interval is over. The source does not specify a particular species, confidence score or explanation format.

This ordering creates a small amount of friction before the answer. A person who wants an instant label has to wait; a person willing to look, touch and listen gets a reason to inspect the subject first. The distinction matters because an identification can be useful while still competing with the walk itself.

What does “hides the phone” actually mean?

In the reported design, “hides” means that the display stops presenting an answer during the observation interval. It does not mean the phone disappears, becomes physically inaccessible or automatically stops every other notification. The material does not establish a lock-screen mode, notification blocking, eye tracking or a sensor that confirms where the walker is looking.

The dark screen can remove one immediate reason to keep checking the display, but the walker still has to choose a safe place to begin, keep the device from interrupting and return attention to the surroundings. A darkened screen is therefore a behavioral prompt, not a guarantee that attention has moved away from the phone.

Is Look First safer than ordinary phone use on a walk?

There is no evidence that Look First itself makes walking safer. Its observation-first sequence is a plausible way to reduce one kind of screen engagement, but the project has not been evaluated for falls, collisions, distraction or injury prevention.

A laboratory study by Elise Labonte-LeMoyne and colleagues, first published online in 2022 and included in a 2024 journal issue, helps explain why the type of phone task matters. In two simulated experiments with 78 participants, mobile-device tasks produced worse visual-discrimination performance than a no-phone control, with the greatest degradation during gaming. The researchers also reported limitations, including a student sample and a simulated environment. Their conclusion that “mobile device task type does matter” applies to that experiment; it is not an endorsement or test of Look First. Read the study and discussion.

The U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration describes pedestrian-distraction research as limited and mixed in real-world settings. It explicitly cautions that device-use studies do not establish a direct link to pedestrian-involved crashes. That makes it inappropriate to turn the project’s design rationale into a claim that the app prevents crashes. See NHTSA’s pedestrian-safety evidence summary.

Audio also is not automatically a safe replacement for a screen. A 2024 Center for Advanced Transportation Mobility report combined observation of 1,274 pedestrians, surveys of 135 pedestrians and simulated crossing work. Its findings depend on sound, context and experimental conditions; they cannot certify headphones, voice interfaces or this project as safe. The Look First excerpt does not establish that it requires earbuds or produces audio output. Read the transportation-mobility report.

What is established about Look First’s technology?

The implementation details are author-reported rather than independently verified. In the indexed excerpt, hiya_24477 describes a browser-running project that uses an open-weight Gemma model, has no server or API key, and consists of a single index.html file with no backend or build step.

Design question What the author reports What remains unverified
Where it runs A browser-running project Supported browsers, operating systems and behavior on a particular phone
Model An open-weight Gemma model Exact Gemma version, model size, prompts, performance and execution location in every situation
Network and backend No server or API key Whether every feature works without connectivity, and what the browser or hosting environment may still request
Project structure One index.html, with no backend or build step Current repository state, dependencies, accessibility and maintenance
Input and output A sentence, three prompts, a dark interval and a later identification Whether input is typed or spoken, whether a camera is used, and whether results are text or audio
Validation No project-specific results are supplied Identification accuracy, usability, screen-time change and safety outcomes

The excerpt mentions a live app and a GitHub project, but their destinations and current behavior were not independently verified. Those references should not be treated as proof that a downloadable, maintained or accessible application is available today.

What should you do before trying an observation-first walk?

Use the idea as a walking routine, not as permission to inspect a screen while moving. The safest setup is to handle the phone before entering a crossing, trail junction, curb or uneven section, then keep both attention and footing available.

  1. Choose a stopping place. Begin beside the trail or path, away from traffic and bicycle flow. Do not start a prompt while crossing or while balancing on difficult terrain.
  2. Describe only what you can safely see. If an app asks for a sentence, enter it before walking on. Avoid composing text while in motion.
  3. Accept the observation tasks as optional prompts. A leaf edge or bark surface may be worth examining, but do not touch unknown plants, wildlife, fungi, fences or private property.
  4. Stop before close inspection. If you need to crouch, use a magnifier or move toward a subject, get fully clear of the path first. A pocket magnifying glass for leaves is an optional aid, not a requirement.
  5. Keep environmental awareness higher than the experiment. Traffic, other walkers, dogs, weather, water and changing ground conditions take priority over completing a timer.
  6. Return to the phone only when stationary. Read the identification in a safe place, then put the device away before continuing.

A regional tree-identification field guide or a pocket nature field notebook can extend the leaf-and-bark activity without adding another glowing screen. Neither is specified by the project author, and a paper guide still requires you to stop before comparing details.

How does Look First compare with other identification habits?

The useful comparison is between interaction patterns, not between named apps. The following table separates the reported Look First behavior from claims that would require evidence about another tool.

Interaction choice When the identification arrives Display demand Observation before answer Evidence boundary
Look First concept After the reported two-minute dark interval Intended to go dark during that interval Yes; three tasks are supplied first Author-described sequence; no independent outcome data
Instant visual identifier Usually immediately after a capture or submission, depending on the tool Not established for any particular product Not established No product-specific comparison was verified
Audio or voice guidance Depends on the service and connection May reduce looking at a display, but may add sound-related trade-offs Not established The 2024 transportation report does not certify audio as safe
Paper field guide When the walker stops and compares features No electronic display Chosen by the walker rather than generated by an AI No claim about accuracy or safety for a specific guide

Look First’s distinctive choice is timing: it makes the answer less convenient in order to make observation the first action. That is a product-design trade-off, not proof that delayed identification is always better than an immediate answer.

Can you install or run Look First today?

The available material cannot confirm current availability. The author refers to a live app and a GitHub repository, but the links and runtime behavior were not independently checked. Consequently, there is no verified installation path, browser compatibility list, accessibility statement or guarantee that the project still runs.

If you follow the author’s post, treat any code or live page as an unverified third-party project. Check the page’s current date, permissions and network requests before entering information. Do not assume that “no API key” means no data leaves the device, or that a single HTML file has been audited for security, privacy or accessibility.

What questions does the concept leave open?

  • Does the delay change behavior? The author states an intention to minimize use, but no before-and-after usage measure is published.
  • Does the model identify nature reliably? No accuracy set, confidence calibration or species-level evaluation is supplied.
  • Who can use the interface? Keyboard access, screen-reader labels, color contrast, motion settings and alternatives to touch, sight or hearing are not documented in the available excerpt.
  • What happens when the walk becomes urgent? A timer should never override the need to move away from traffic, hazards or other people.
  • What does “offline” mean in practice? The no-server and no-API-key description is not enough to establish network independence under every browser condition.

What is the practical verdict on Look First?

Look First is best understood as an observation-first interaction pattern, not as a proven safety product or a finished field guide. Its strongest idea is the deliberate pause: three sensory prompts, a darkened display and an answer that arrives after the walker has looked around. Its evidence is limited to the author’s description, while its effectiveness, availability, privacy, accessibility and identification quality remain unresolved.

Used responsibly, the idea can be a reminder to stop, notice a leaf, feel bark or listen for a call before asking technology to name what is there. It cannot replace attention to terrain, traffic, other people or wildlife, and no screen-darkening design removes the need to put the phone away when conditions demand full attention.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Look First work without an internet connection?

That is not established. The author says the project has no server or API key, but the available description does not prove that the model and every browser operation work offline or reveal what network requests a hosted page may make.

Does Look First use the phone camera or microphone?

The available project description does not confirm either input. It mentions a sentence describing the surroundings and later observation tasks, so a camera, microphone or species-recognition pipeline should not be assumed.

Can I change the two-minute eyes-up timer?

Only a two-minute interval is reported. The excerpt does not document controls for changing, pausing or extending it, so timer customization would need to be verified in the current app or code.

Are headphones a safer way to use nature-identification AI while walking?

Not automatically. A 2024 transportation-mobility report found that audio-related pedestrian effects depend on sound, context and experimental conditions; it does not certify headphones or any voice interface as safe.
