At the full advertised speed, a 200GB game takes about 4 hours 27 minutes on a 100 Mbps connection, 53 minutes at 500 Mbps and 27 minutes on a 1Gbps connection. Those are ideal transfer times. Wi‑Fi losses, busy game servers, network overhead, other household traffic and console storage work usually add 10–40% or more. A 200GB download also consumes roughly 200GB of your monthly data allowance, plus a small amount of protocol overhead, so it can matter on capped, satellite, 5G or hotspot plans.

This guide shows the calculation, gives realistic speed tables, explains Mbps versus MB/s, covers installation and patch time, and applies the numbers to the reported 210GB PlayStation 5 download for Grand Theft Auto VI. The reported GTA VI size is a database report, not a final storage specification published by Rockstar.

How long does it take to download a 200GB game?

Use Time in seconds = file size in GB × 8,000 ÷ speed in Mbps. For a 200GB file, that is 1,600,000 divided by your connection speed. The result assumes decimal gigabytes, a constant connection and 100% transfer efficiency.

Advertised speed 200GB best-case download time Theoretical launcher rate
10 Mbps 44 hours 27 minutes 1.25 MB/s
25 Mbps 17 hours 47 minutes 3.125 MB/s
50 Mbps 8 hours 53 minutes 6.25 MB/s
100 Mbps 4 hours 27 minutes 12.5 MB/s
200 Mbps 2 hours 13 minutes 25 MB/s
300 Mbps 1 hour 29 minutes 37.5 MB/s
500 Mbps 53 minutes 62.5 MB/s
1 Gbps (1,000 Mbps) 27 minutes 125 MB/s
2 Gbps 13 minutes 250 MB/s

The arithmetic comes from the byte-to-bit conversion used by RSINC and EasyCalculator.org. A 200 × 8,000 ÷ 100 calculation produces 16,000 seconds, or 4 hours, 26 minutes and 40 seconds. At 500 Mbps it is 3,200 seconds (53 minutes 20 seconds), and at 1,000 Mbps it is 1,600 seconds (26 minutes 40 seconds).

Real downloads are usually slower. A calculator from KeyboardTester.click describes roughly 4.7 hours as theoretical, about 5.5 hours as realistic and about 7.5 hours on a congested 100 Mbps connection. Treat the table as a lower bound, not a launch-day promise.

What is the realistic time after Wi‑Fi and network overhead?

A good wired connection often delivers around 85–95% of the plan rate after TCP/IP and Ethernet framing. Busy Wi‑Fi, a distant content server or evening congestion can reduce effective throughput to 60–80% or lower.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Plan Ideal At 90% efficiency At 60% efficiency
100 Mbps 4 h 27 m 4 h 56 m 7 h 24 m
500 Mbps 53 m 59 m 1 h 29 m
1 Gbps 27 m 30 m 44 m

HowLongFor estimates TCP/IP overhead at about 5–10%. A2Z Tools calculates that standard 1,500-byte Ethernet frames leave about 94.9% for payload and uses 90% as a practical wired estimate. The same source’s 90%-efficient example puts 100GB at 100 Mbps at about 2 hours 28 minutes; doubling the file gives roughly 4 hours 56 minutes for 200GB.

Advertised ISP rates are “up to” speeds. Game launchers may be limited by the publisher’s CDN, and the console or PC may be writing, decrypting or verifying files while data arrives. A 4K stream uses about 25 Mbps, so one stream consumes a quarter of a 100 Mbps line. Other downloads, cloud backups and video calls add to the competition.

What is the difference between Mbps and MB/s?

Mbps means megabits per second; MB/s means megabytes per second. Eight bits make one byte, so divide Mbps by eight before comparing an ISP plan with the number shown by Steam, a console or another launcher.

Plan speed Maximum data rate
25 Mbps 3.125 MB/s
50 Mbps 6.25 MB/s
100 Mbps 12.5 MB/s
200 Mbps 25 MB/s
300 Mbps 37.5 MB/s
500 Mbps 62.5 MB/s
1,000 Mbps 125 MB/s

Therefore, seeing about 11–12 MB/s on a 100 Mbps plan can be normal; it is not 100 MB/s. A launcher showing 50 MB/s is receiving roughly 400 Mbps before overhead. Convert the displayed rate to Mbps (multiply MB/s by eight) when checking it against your plan.

How long will a 50GB or 100GB game take?

Download time scales linearly with size. A 50GB file takes one quarter as long as a 200GB file, while a 100GB file takes half as long.

Speed 50GB 100GB 150GB 200GB
25 Mbps 4 h 27 m 8 h 53 m 13 h 20 m 17 h 47 m
100 Mbps 1 h 7 m 2 h 13 m 3 h 20 m 4 h 27 m
300 Mbps 22 m 44 m 1 h 7 m 1 h 29 m
500 Mbps 13 m 27 m 40 m 53 m
1 Gbps 7 m 13 m 20 m 27 m
2 Gbps 3 m 7 m 10 m 13 m

These are full-speed, decimal-GB figures. RSINC publishes the same 100GB anchors: about 2 hours 13 minutes at 100 Mbps, 27 minutes at 500 Mbps and 13 minutes at 1Gbps. Add the same efficiency allowance you would use for a 200GB download.

Why is my game downloading slower than the estimate?

The estimate assumes a constant transfer rate, but several limits can apply at once:

  • Server or CDN limits: launch-day demand and major patches can limit each connection.
  • Wi‑Fi conditions: walls, interference and distance reduce throughput. HowLongFor puts typical Wi‑Fi 5 delivery at 50–70% of plan speed and Wi‑Fi 6 at about 70–90% in good conditions.
  • Evening congestion: neighbourhood traffic is often highest around 7–11 PM.
  • Other users: streaming, cloud sync and another download share your capacity.
  • Hardware ceilings: an older console, hard drive or underpowered PC may not process a gigabit stream continuously.
  • VPN or router settings: encryption, a distant VPN endpoint, quality-of-service rules or a client-side cap can reduce the rate.
  • Compression and disk work: Steam often downloads compressed data that is 30–50% smaller than the installed size, then spends CPU time decompressing it. The network meter can pause while the disk or processor catches up.

Look at the launcher’s instantaneous rate and its remaining-size estimate rather than judging by the progress bar alone. If the rate repeatedly falls to zero while disk or CPU usage is high, the bottleneck is local processing rather than the ISP.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How do I calculate my own 200GB download time?

  1. Read the remaining download size in the launcher, not the game’s advertised installed size.
  2. Confirm whether the launcher uses GB (decimal) or GiB (binary). Windows can label 1,073,741,824-byte GiB values as “GB.”
  3. Measure your current download speed in Mbps at the same device and location. For satellite or 5G home service, use a recent measured speed rather than the plan’s headline number.
  4. Multiply the remaining GB by 8,000 and divide by Mbps.
  5. Divide the result by an efficiency factor such as 0.9 for a good Ethernet link or 0.6–0.8 for busy Wi‑Fi to get a more conservative estimate.
  6. Add time for decompression, file verification, copying and patches.

For example, 200GB at an observed 80 Mbps is 200 × 8,000 ÷ 80 = 20,000 seconds, or 5 hours 33 minutes at 100% efficiency. At 90% efficiency it is about 6 hours 10 minutes. If Windows reports 200 GiB, the byte count is about 214.7 decimal GB, making the result longer still.

How much data does a 200GB game use?

Plan for approximately 200GB of metered data, with a few percent extra for protocol overhead. Downloading overnight changes congestion, not the amount counted by your ISP. Two such games plus a 50GB patch consume about 450GB before streaming, updates or cloud backups.

Against a 1.2TB (1,200GB decimal) allowance, one 200GB game is about 16.7% of the cap. If the provider counts 1.2 × 1,024GB, it is about 16.3%. RSINC describes 1.2TB as a common major-ISP cap and notes that a typical console game can already be 50–100GB or more.

For scale, RSINC estimates Netflix at roughly 3GB per hour in HD and 7–10GB per hour in 4K. A 200GB download is therefore around 67 hours of HD streaming or 20–28 hours of 4K. Mobile hotspot and many satellite plans may impose an overage, throttle or hard stop long before 200GB, so they are poor choices for this job.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What happens when you exceed a cap?

Policies vary by market and plan. RSINC cites examples such as $10 for each additional 50GB on selected DSL plans, 1–3 Mbps throttling after a soft cap, and unlimited-data add-ons commonly costing $30–$50 per month. Its guide lists a $30 xFi Complete unlimited option for a 1.2TB limit, a $40 Cox unlimited option beyond 1.25TB, unlimited data on AT&T Fiber, and default unlimited data in most Spectrum markets; these prices and terms can change. Check your provider account before starting the download.

Why are modern AAA games 150–250GB?

Large installs combine high-resolution textures, high-bitrate cinematics, multiple language voice tracks, multiplayer assets and sometimes several game modes in one package. KeyboardTester.click places flagship releases such as Call of Duty, Modern Warfare and Starfield in the 150–250GB range. HowLongFor’s broad band is 80–200GB on PC, 80–150GB on PS5 and 70–150GB on Xbox Series X/S.

Download size and installed size are not identical. Steam may compress transfer data, while a console can reserve extra space for unpacking and copying. A day-one patch can add another 5–60 minutes of network and installation work according to HowLongFor’s timeline.

How long will the reported 210GB GTA VI download take?

A 210GB PlayStation Store database report circulated on 27 October 2026. VideoCardz, GameSpot and GLITCHED all described it as reported information, and VideoCardz explicitly said Rockstar had not published final storage requirements. The number can change before launch and may not equal the final occupied space.

50 Mbps 9 h 20 m
100 Mbps 4 h 40 m
500 Mbps 56 m
750 Mbps 37 m 20 s
1 Gbps 28 m
2 Gbps 14 m

These figures are the 200GB arithmetic scaled by 210/200. ISPreview UK similarly says an unloaded 100 Mbps line would take nearly five hours and a 1Gbps line about 28 minutes. Rockstar’s announced preload window is local midnight on 12 November 2026, one week before the 19 November PS5 and Xbox Series X|S release, according to GLITCHED, VideoCardz and GameSpot. Starting during that window avoids the launch-hour rush. Current reporting also says physical boxes contain a download code rather than a disc, so buying a box does not necessarily bypass the network transfer.

Some analysis estimates an Xbox Series X version could be around 240GB if the 210GB PS5 report is accurate, because Sony’s Kraken compression has often been estimated at 20–35% more effective than Xbox compression. That is an estimate, not an Xbox store listing.

How can I make a 200GB download finish sooner?

  1. Use Ethernet. Connect the PC or console directly to the router with Cat 5e or Cat 6. HowLongFor says wired networking can substantially outperform Wi‑Fi; KeyboardTester.click notes that Wi‑Fi 5 may top out around 400–600 Mbps and Wi‑Fi 6 around 600–900 Mbps in favorable conditions.
  2. Stop competing traffic. Pause other downloads, cloud backups and 4K streams. One 25 Mbps stream is significant on a 100 Mbps line.
  3. Download outside peak hours. Weekday mornings or overnight can avoid the 7–11 PM congestion period, although the data still counts against your cap.
  4. Enable rest or standby downloads. PS5 and Xbox can continue downloads in their low-power modes when configured to stay connected.
  5. Remove software caps. In Steam, check Settings > Downloads for a bandwidth limit and try another download region if the current CDN is busy.
  6. Turn off a VPN temporarily. A VPN can add a distant, congested hop. Re-enable it afterward if you need it for privacy.
  7. Use a measured speed. This is especially important on satellite and 5G home services whose advertised maximum may not match the current radio or cell load.
  8. Preload. Use the publisher’s preload window rather than competing with everyone at release time.
  9. Leave headroom for installation. Keep free disk space beyond the download figure for unpacking, copying and patches.

A faster plan helps only when the server, router, cable, Wi‑Fi and storage device can use it. A stock PS5 has a gigabit Ethernet port, so a 2Gbps home plan cannot raise its wired console ceiling above roughly 1Gbps; another device on the same connection may still benefit.

How much storage should I free before downloading?

Reserve at least the displayed download size plus room for temporary files and updates. The original PS5 has approximately 667GB usable, so a 210GB installation would consume nearly one-third of that space. If free space is short, uninstall an unneeded title or add a compatible internal SSD. Xbox Series X/S can download games to an external USB 3.0 drive, although playable performance and transfer behavior differ from the internal drive.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not wait until the download reaches 100% to discover that copying or a patch needs more room. Console prompts may require additional temporary space even when the final installed game appears to fit.

What should I do if the download estimate keeps changing?

Variable estimates usually reflect a variable transfer rate. Check the current MB/s, convert it to Mbps, and compare it with a speed test run on the same device. If Ethernet is fast but Wi‑Fi is not, move closer to the router or wire the device. If every device is slow, reboot the router, check for an ISP outage and test again outside peak hours. If only one game’s server is slow, changing local settings will not remove a publisher-side limit.

On PC, watch CPU, disk and network graphs together. High disk or CPU use with a low network rate often means decompression or verification. On PS5, the separate copying phase can continue after the network bar reaches 100%; that is normal and is not additional internet time.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I pause a large game download without starting over?

Most current PC and console launchers save completed chunks and resume later, although a client may recheck files after an interruption. Avoid powering off during a file-copy or verification phase, and leave the device connected to the same account and storage drive.

Does putting a console in rest mode make the internet faster?

No. Rest mode does not increase the line rate, but it can stop games and video apps from competing for bandwidth and lets the download continue unattended. The improvement comes from less local traffic, not a higher ISP speed.

Is a 2Gbps plan worthwhile for downloading games to a PS5?

Only partly: every PS5 model has gigabit Ethernet, so one wired console cannot normally use more than about 1Gbps. A 2Gbps plan can still help other household devices download simultaneously, but it will not turn a 28-minute 210GB PS5 transfer into a 14-minute one.

Will deleting a game reduce the data used by a future reinstall?

No. Removing local files frees storage but does not change the bytes that must be downloaded again. Keep a backup on an external drive where the platform supports it if you expect to reinstall under a strict cap.

Can a physical copy avoid a 200GB download?

Not necessarily. Current reporting on GTA VI says the physical package contains a download code rather than a complete game disc. Check the platform listing and packaging for that specific release before assuming a disc eliminates the network transfer.
