In current published policies, some Google Pixel phones receive five or seven years of operating-system and security updates, Samsung’s Galaxy S24 series has a seven-generation OS and seven-year security commitment, and Chromebooks receive updates for ten years from platform release. Windows support depends on the installed edition and version; Apple’s historical update examples are not a fixed promise for each new iPhone or Mac.
What “software updates” means
Two kinds of support are easy to confuse. Operating-system (OS) upgrades add or change platform features and may be counted as major generations. Security updates address vulnerabilities and can continue on a different schedule. A published number is also tied to a clock: it might begin at a device’s first availability, a platform’s release, or the start of a particular Windows version’s lifecycle.

These policies describe eligibility, not the exact day an update reaches every device. Model, carrier, market, edition, compatibility, and staged rollout can affect availability. An update promise also does not mean every new feature works on every supported model.
Phone update policies vary by manufacturer and model
Google Pixel: five or seven years, depending on family
Google’s current policy gives Pixel 8 and later phones seven years of OS and security updates, starting from when each device first became available on the Google Store in the US. The listed group includes Pixel 8, 8 Pro and 8a, as well as later listed phones including Pixel 10. Pixel 6 and Pixel 7 families—including Pixel Fold and certain a-series devices—are listed for five years from the same start point. Check the model list on Google’s Pixel software-update page rather than assuming every Pixel has the same term.

- Please note, this device does not support E-SIM; This 4G model is compatible with all GSM networks worldwide outside of the U.S. In the US, ONLY compatible with T-Mobile and their MVNO's (Metro and Standup). It will NOT work with other CDMA carriers, and it is also not compatible with their MVNO (Visible, Xfinity Mobile, US Mobile, Cricket Wireless, etc).
- Compatibility with certain third-party devices and accessibility accessories, including some hearing aids, may vary depending on manufacturer support, Bluetooth protocols, software compatibility, and regional firmware limitations. For additional hearing aid compatibility information, please refer to Samsung’s official support documentation.

Google says updates roll out gradually and that delivery can depend on the carrier and device. The seven-year figure is the stated support window from first US Google Store availability, not a guarantee that every eligible device receives an update simultaneously.
Samsung Galaxy: distinguish OS generations from security years
Samsung’s Galaxy S24 series announcement states seven generations of OS upgrades and seven years of security updates. Those are separate measures: “seven generations” counts OS upgrades, while “seven years” describes the security-update period. Samsung says availability and timing can vary by model. This commitment applies to the S24 series named in the announcement; it should not be treated as a policy for every Samsung phone or older Galaxy generation. See Samsung’s Galaxy S24 announcement.

Apple iPhone: historical longevity is not a forward guarantee
Apple’s June 2024 longevity paper gives historical examples rather than a standard future term for each new iPhone. It says iOS 17 supported iPhone models introduced since 2018, and notes that in March 2024 Apple released an iOS 15 update covering the iPhone 6s, introduced in 2015. That illustrates how security fixes for an older OS can arrive after newer OS compatibility has moved on; it does not establish a fixed number of years that a newly purchased iPhone will receive updates. See Apple’s Longevity by Design paper.

Chromebooks: ten years from platform release
Google states that ChromeOS devices receive updates for ten years from the platform release. A platform is a set of components selected for a device, so the clock does not simply start when an individual buyer purchases or opens the Chromebook. Google’s ChromeOS Auto Update policy provides a model-specific table of automatic-update end dates; check the exact device there. Google also warns that some pre-2021 devices receiving extended updates may not support certain features and services.

Windows laptops: track the version and edition
Windows 11 Home and Pro follow Microsoft’s Modern Lifecycle Policy. Support is tied to the installed Windows version and edition, so there is no single update lifespan that applies to every Windows laptop from its purchase date. Microsoft’s Windows 11 Home and Pro lifecycle page lists version-specific dates. Microsoft’s September 29, 2026 announcement says Windows 11 version 26H2 continues the annual feature-update cadence and that installing it resets the support lifecycle for supported editions. For an individual laptop, check its Windows edition and version, then confirm that the hardware can install a later supported version. See Microsoft’s 2026 Windows 11 update announcement.
Mac: check compatibility for the specific model
Apple’s June 2024 paper says macOS Sonoma was compatible with Mac computers introduced in 2017 or later. It also describes older-device security updates, but does not promise a fixed prospective support period for each newly released Mac. Use Apple’s model-specific compatibility information when assessing a particular computer; the historical examples are evidence of past support, not a guaranteed end date for a current model.

How to check a device before relying on its support window
- Identify the exact model and software edition. On a phone, note its model name; on a Windows laptop, note both Windows edition and version. Chromebook support is also model-specific.
- Find the vendor’s policy for that exact device. Use Google’s Pixel list, Samsung’s statement for the named S24 series, Google’s Chromebook Auto Update table, Microsoft’s version lifecycle dates, or Apple’s compatibility information.
- Read what the number measures. Separate OS upgrades from security updates, and distinguish years from a count of OS generations.
- Find the clock’s starting point and any limits. Pixel’s term starts at first US Google Store availability; ChromeOS counts from platform release; Windows dates apply to a version and edition. Check for model, carrier, market, feature, or hardware-compatibility qualifications.
- Confirm the device can move to a supported release. This matters particularly for Windows, where support changes with the installed version, and for older Chromebooks whose extended updates may omit some features or services.
