For shooting in rain, use a rain cover that fits your camera-and-lens combination; use a bag to stow gear between shots, not as a substitute for a cover while shooting. Weather resistance varies by model and does not guarantee protection in every downpour. Check your camera and lens manuals, and confirm a cover’s fit and access to the controls before heading out.
Choose protection for the moment you need it
| Option | Best use | Fit and operation | Protection and trade-offs |
|---|---|---|---|
| Dedicated camera rain cover | Actively shooting in rain | Choose for the specific body and lens; check access to the viewfinder, display, controls, and hands, as well as how the cover attaches. | Reusable and designed for shooting, but protection claims and weather limits are product-specific. Water-repellent does not mean submersion-proof. |
| Low-cost rain sleeve | Occasional or budget-conscious shooting | Check that it accommodates the lens and allows practical access to the camera. Digital Camera World describes the OP/TECH Rainsleeve as a clear, plastic-bag-style product. | Generally simpler and less costly than a fitted cover, but the cited guide does not establish a universal level of protection; assess the actual product and fit. |
| Camera bag | Carrying and stowing equipment between shots | Check capacity for the camera, lens, and accessories, and whether the bag has its own rain protection. | A bag can keep equipment stowed, but an unspecified bag is not established as protection for a camera being used in sustained rain. |
| Improvised plastic cover | Emergency use when no proper cover is available | It must not obstruct the lens, viewfinder, controls, or safe handling. Avoid a setup that traps moisture against the camera. | Not tested or guaranteed waterproof. Treat it as a temporary expedient, not a reusable replacement for a correctly fitted cover. |
Check weather resistance on your exact camera and lens
Do not assume a camera is safe in rain because another model from the same brand is described as weather-resistant. Read the documentation for both camera and lens, and follow any stated limits. For example, the Ricoh Optio X manual says that model is not weather-, water-, or liquid-resistant. Sony says its LCR-ELW cover is designed for rain, snow, and wind-driven precipitation, but does not guarantee complete prevention of moisture ingress during severe blizzards. These are model-specific statements, not rules for all cameras or covers.

Canon ERC-R5S
Canon describes the ERC-R5S as an acrylic-and-nylon cover with high water repellency that provides protection against water for prolonged shooting in rain. It attaches to the camera’s accessory shoe and fastens at the front around the lens. A transparent window lets the photographer view displays and access rear controls; Canon notes that viewfinder shooting may be difficult and some viewfinder functions may not be available. Canon lists supported EOS R bodies and RF lenses, so check its compatibility information rather than assuming a fit for every combination. Canon ERC-R5S product details.

Sony LCR-ELW
Sony says the LCR-ELW is a large white cover for compatible Alpha cameras and lenses. It has an adjustable fastening strap, a transparent LCD window, and an integrated storage pouch. Sony describes its material as breathable and water-repellent and lists water-vapor permeability of at least 20,000 g/m²/24h. That is Sony’s product specification, not an independent comparison or a measure that by itself establishes rain protection. Confirm compatibility against Sony’s list. Sony LCR-ELW product details.

Before buying either model or another cover, verify the actual camera body, lens length and diameter, lens hood, and attached accessories. Check how quickly it can be deployed, whether the viewfinder remains usable, and whether you can operate the controls without exposing the camera. The Digital Camera World guide also warns that routing a strap outside a cover compromises water resistance. Its product assessments—including those of Think Tank Hydrophobia, Think Tank Emergency Rain Cover, OP/TECH Rainsleeve, LensCoat RainCoat RS, and Peak Design Shell—are editorial evaluations, not manufacturer guarantees. Use bags for transport, not as a shooting cover
A camera bag is useful for carrying and stowing gear when you are not shooting. If you expect rain on the walk between locations, check whether the specific bag has a rain cover or other stated weather protection and use it as directed. The sources cited here do not establish that a generic bag will protect an exposed camera during sustained shooting in rain. Keep the camera under its shooting cover when it is in use.

Built for photographers who shoot in real weather, not just emergency backup coverage.

Compatible with tripod mounting so you can keep shooting hands-free in any conditions, and works with a lens hood attached for added fit and weather protection performance.
When an improvised cover is the only option
A plastic sleeve or bag may serve as an emergency barrier, but no authoritative, tested DIY pattern is established here. Keep the material clear of the lens and operating controls, maintain a safe grip, and do not seal damp equipment inside plastic where moisture could remain trapped. If you shoot in rain regularly, a purpose-made cover selected for your body and lens is the more dependable reusable choice.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesReduce droplets on the lens and keep checking the cover
A fitted cover protects the camera-and-lens assembly, but droplets on the front element can still interfere with a shot. Digital Camera World recommends using a lens hood and wiping droplets from the front element. Check that the cover has not shifted, that fasteners remain secure, and that openings or a strap are not leaving an exposed path for water.

After the camera gets wet
Follow the instructions for your exact camera model; drying and handling guidance is not universal. The Ricoh Optio X manual says: “Should the camera get wet from rain, splashing water, or any other liquid, wipe it off immediately with a dry soft cloth.” It also warns that rapid temperature changes can cause condensation inside and outside that camera. Consult your own manual for the appropriate steps after exposure, particularly if the camera has been moved between sharply different temperatures. Ricoh Optio X manual.
