A local AI coding assistant is a four-part system: your editor supplies the workspace and interface, an extension or provider connects that interface to a model, a runtime such as Ollama serves the model, and the language model generates code-oriented responses from the prompt and context it receives. When inference is local, the model runs on your computer rather than a provider’s cloud server.

That does not make every editor AI feature local. Chat, agent actions, autocomplete, semantic search, embeddings, sign-in, and telemetry can use different paths. The useful question is therefore not simply whether an assistant is “local,” but which feature is running where, which service receives your code, and what hardware and model capabilities that path requires.

What does “local AI coding assistant” actually mean?

“Local” describes where a particular model inference happens. If a model runtime on your computer receives the prompt and generates the response, that inference is local. The editor may still contact the internet for extension updates, account services, documentation, cloud models, or features that are not implemented by the local provider.

A local setup is best understood as a pipeline rather than a single application:

The editor is the workspace and user interface

Visual Studio Code (VS Code) displays chat, code actions, diffs, and agent controls. It also knows which files are open, what text is selected, which workspace is active, and what project context an extension is allowed to read. The editor does not become an AI model merely because an assistant panel appears inside it.

The extension or provider is the bridge

An extension translates editor events into model requests. It decides how to expose a model in the chat picker, which context to attach, how to stream a response, and whether a response can be turned into a tool call or edit. A provider can also maintain the connection to a local server. In the Ollama example, the official extension discovers an Ollama server at http://127.0.0.1:11434 by default and adds its available models to VS Code Chat.

The runtime serves a selected model

Ollama is a model runtime and server, not the language model itself. It loads a model, accepts requests, manages memory, and returns generated tokens. Other runtimes can serve different model formats, acceleration back ends, and context limits. The runtime is the component that makes a model available to the extension over a local connection.

The language model generates the response

The model predicts a continuation based on the instructions, code, conversation history, and other context supplied by the extension. Some models are good at code completion, some at explanation or refactoring, and some at structured tool use. A model’s advertised name does not guarantee that it supports vision, tool calling, long context, or reliable multi-step reasoning; those capabilities must be checked for the selected model and runtime.

How does a request move from the editor to a local model?

For a chat request, the normal data path looks like this:

  1. You ask a question or select code. The editor captures the prompt and the relevant workspace state.
  2. The extension assembles context. It may include the selected text, open files, diagnostics, conversation history, and instructions about the requested task. The extension’s implementation determines what is actually sent; an editor-wide assumption that every file is included would be unsafe.
  3. The provider chooses a route. A local provider sends the request to the configured runtime. A cloud provider sends it to a remote service. A managed on-device feature can use a separate editor-controlled route.
  4. The runtime loads or reuses the model. Loading can consume substantial memory, especially when the context window is large or several requests run at once.
  5. The model generates tokens. The runtime streams those tokens back to the extension, which turns them into text, a proposed edit, or a structured tool request.
  6. The editor presents or executes the result. A text answer can appear in Chat. An edit may be shown as a diff. An agent tool call can request permission to read files, run commands, or make changes, depending on the editor, extension, and model.

This explains why “the model is local” is narrower than “the editor is offline.” Each feature can have its own provider and network requirements.

How do I use Ollama in VS Code?

The supported route in current VS Code documentation is the official Ollama extension. VS Code says, “The built-in Ollama provider is deprecated,” so a new setup should use the extension rather than relying on the older built-in integration.

  1. Install and start Ollama. Complete the Ollama installation for your operating system and start its local server. The extension expects the default local endpoint http://127.0.0.1:11434 unless you configure a different connection.
  2. Make a model available to Ollama. Use Ollama’s model-management workflow to download or otherwise install a model that fits your computer. The model must be present in the running Ollama instance before VS Code can list it.
  3. Install the official Ollama extension in VS Code. Use the Extensions view, search for the official Ollama integration, and install it. Avoid treating the deprecated built-in provider as the preferred path.
  4. Open Chat. Open the VS Code Chat view after the extension is active. The extension connects to the Ollama server and discovers the models it exposes.
  5. Choose a model from the Ollama section. Select the desired model in the Chat model picker, then send a small coding question first. The response should be generated by the model served through your local Ollama instance.

Model choice matters. A compact model may respond with less hardware pressure but weaker reasoning or shorter usable context. A larger model may handle broader repository context or more complex refactors, while taking longer and consuming more memory. The extension does not remove those model-level trade-offs.

Which VS Code AI features work offline with a local model?

VS Code documents local BYOK models as usable completely offline for chat, but it does not treat every AI feature as local. The status depends on the feature and on the selected model.

Feature What a local BYOK model can do Important limitation
Chat Can run offline when the request is sent to the configured local model. The extension, editor updates, or other services may still need network access at other times.
Agent and tool workflows Available in supported configurations when the model can produce the required tool calls. Tool support varies by model, and executing a command or edit can have effects beyond generating text.
Utility tasks Some utility operations can use a BYOK model. Availability depends on the specific VS Code configuration and task.
Inline suggestions Not currently available from VS Code local models in the documented BYOK path. Do not assume that a working local Chat model also powers inline autocomplete.
Semantic search and embeddings May be available only through a service that supplies the required embeddings or search infrastructure. These capabilities can depend on GitHub Copilot services rather than your local model.

The practical test is feature-by-feature: open the feature’s provider setting, identify the selected service, and check whether it requires a Copilot connection. A local chat response does not prove that inline suggestions or repository indexing are local.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What are the two local-model routes in current VS Code documentation?

VS Code distinguishes user-configured BYOK local models from experimental Copilot-managed on-device models. They are separate routes with different account, hardware, and control requirements.

Route Where inference is configured Account requirement What to expect
BYOK local model You configure a local provider such as Ollama and select its model in VS Code. VS Code documents that this route can work without GitHub sign-in or a Copilot plan. Chat can work offline. Agent and utility support depends on the model and configuration; local models are not currently used for inline suggestions.
Copilot-managed on-device model VS Code manages an experimental on-device model route. Requires GitHub sign-in and supported hardware. Availability and requirements are tied to the specific experimental model and may change independently of Ollama.

Do not combine these routes when evaluating privacy or hardware. A BYOK Ollama setup is not evidence that the experimental managed route will run on the same computer, and having a supported managed route does not make every BYOK feature available.

What hardware does a local coding assistant need?

There is no single hardware baseline for all local coding models. Memory use depends on the model’s size and format, the context length, concurrency, and whether the runtime uses CPU, GPU, or a mix. The model’s tool-calling or vision features can also change the practical workload.

The unusually demanding figures in current VS Code documentation apply to one specific experimental path: running MAI Code 1.1 Flash on-device requires an NVIDIA GPU with at least 96 GB of VRAM and about 55 GB of free disk space. The documented setup also requires installing a compatible llama.cpp build. Those figures are not baseline requirements for Ollama, for every local model, or for ordinary local chat.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Hardware or setup factor Why it matters How to interpret it
GPU VRAM Holds model weights and working data for accelerated inference. The 96 GB figure is specific to the MAI Code 1.1 Flash experimental route, not a generic consumer-GPU recommendation.
System memory Supports CPU inference, model loading, editor processes, and large context windows. Exact requirements vary by model and runtime; no universal amount is established here.
Disk space Stores model files, runtime components, and caches. About 55 GB applies to the cited experimental route only.
Runtime compatibility Determines whether the model can load and which acceleration features work. Follow the model and runtime’s compatibility requirements instead of buying hardware from a generic specification.

If you are selecting hardware for a particular model, start with that model’s documented VRAM and storage requirements. An arbitrary consumer GPU should not be assumed to satisfy the 96 GB configuration.

How do model capabilities change the coding experience?

The extension supplies the interface, but the selected model determines much of the quality and range of the result.

Context length

Context length limits how much code, conversation, and instruction the model can consider in one request. A project-wide task may need retrieval or file selection even when the model advertises a large context window. Sending more text also increases memory use and can slow generation.

Tool calling

Tool calling lets a model request structured actions such as reading a file or applying an edit. A model that only generates prose cannot reliably drive an agent workflow, even if the extension has tools available. Check that the chosen model and provider support the tool-call format expected by the editor.

Vision

Vision-capable models can interpret screenshots, diagrams, or images supplied by a compatible extension. A text-only coding model cannot infer visual information merely because Chat accepts an image.

Reasoning and performance

Reasoning behavior, latency, token throughput, and code accuracy vary by model, quantization, runtime, and hardware. There is no single performance number in the documentation that can be applied to every local setup, so compare models using the tasks you actually perform rather than a model label alone.

Is a local coding assistant private and fully offline?

Local inference can reduce the amount of source code sent to a remote model, but “private” and “offline” still need a feature-level check.

  • Identify the provider for each feature. Chat, inline suggestions, semantic search, embeddings, and agent tools may not share one provider.
  • Inspect the extension’s context behavior. Determine whether it sends selected text, open files, repository snippets, diagnostics, or conversation history.
  • Separate local and cloud model sign-in. Ollama local models do not require sign-in. Cloud models have a different account and connectivity path.
  • Check services used by supporting features. VS Code documentation notes that semantic search, inline suggestions, and embedding-dependent capabilities can rely on Copilot services.
  • Review agent permissions. A local model can still request actions that alter files or run commands. VS Code notes that local models might not use the same safety filters as Copilot cloud models, which makes approval and review especially important.

For a genuinely disconnected workflow, test the specific feature with network access disabled after installation. A successful local chat request is evidence about that chat path only, not about every editor service.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What should I check when the local model does not appear or respond?

Symptom Checks to make Likely boundary
No Ollama model in the picker Confirm Ollama is installed and running, a model is available to it, and the extension is installed and enabled. Check that the configured server matches the default endpoint if you have not changed it. Discovery occurs between the extension and the runtime, before the model can answer.
The picker shows a model but Chat times out Check that the local server remains running and that the model can load on the available memory. A large context or first-load operation can take longer than a small test request. The runtime may be unable to load or serve the selected model.
Chat works but inline suggestions do not Treat this as expected for the documented VS Code local BYOK limitation, then check which provider supplies inline suggestions. Chat and inline completion are separate feature paths.
An agent cannot perform an action Verify that the model supports tool calling, the extension exposes the required tool, and the editor is allowed to request approval for that action. Tool support is a model-and-extension capability, not a consequence of local hosting.
Responses use the wrong project context Review which files are open or selected and what context the extension includes. Narrow the request to the relevant files when a repository is large. The extension controls prompt assembly and context selection.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Support on Ko-Fi

Which local route fits a particular goal?

Choose based on the feature you need, not on the word “local” alone.

Your priority Most suitable starting point Reason
Offline chat without a Copilot plan BYOK local provider such as the official Ollama extension. VS Code documents offline use for local BYOK chat and no required GitHub sign-in for that route.
Inline autocomplete Use a provider that explicitly supports inline suggestions. VS Code local BYOK models are not currently available for inline suggestions.
Agent actions on local files A local model with documented tool-calling support, combined with explicit approvals. The model must support the required calls, and local hosting does not remove the risk of an incorrect action.
Experimental managed on-device model Evaluate the exact VS Code model and hardware requirements first. The route requires GitHub sign-in and supported hardware; its requirements should not be generalized to all local assistants.
Broadest cloud-managed feature coverage A cloud provider or Copilot-backed feature where the required service is available. Some editor features, including embedding-dependent functions, rely on cloud services.

What is the practical takeaway?

A local AI coding assistant is an integration of an editor, an extension, a model runtime, and a language model. The extension is the bridge that turns editor context into a model request and turns the model’s response into chat, edits, or tools. Ollama’s official VS Code extension is the current integration path for Ollama models, while the older built-in provider is deprecated.

Evaluate locality one feature at a time. Local BYOK chat can work offline without a GitHub account or Copilot plan, but VS Code does not currently use those local models for inline suggestions, and semantic search or embeddings may invoke Copilot services. Hardware requirements belong to the chosen model and route; the 96 GB VRAM and approximately 55 GB disk figures describe only the experimental MAI Code 1.1 Flash on-device flow. Finally, treat tool-capable local agents as software with real permissions: verify context, review proposed changes, and approve actions deliberately.

Frequently asked questions

Can I change the local model without reinstalling the VS Code extension?

Usually, model selection is handled through the provider’s model picker, so changing an available Ollama model does not inherently require a new extension installation. The replacement model still has to be compatible with the provider and may expose different context, vision, reasoning, or tool-calling capabilities.

Why can a small local model feel faster than a larger one?

Generation speed depends on model size, quantization, context length, and whether the runtime can use available acceleration. A smaller model has fewer weights to process, while a larger model may spend more time loading and generating even when it produces more capable answers.

Does the default Ollama endpoint accept connections from other computers?

The documented default is the loopback address 127.0.0.1, which is intended for the same machine. If you deliberately change the server’s bind address or place it behind a network proxy, review firewall and authentication controls before exposing it to another device.

How should a team govern local coding agents?

Define which models and runtimes are approved, what repository data may enter prompts, and which tools require human confirmation. Keep generated patches reviewable, document the model version used for important changes, and test agent actions in a disposable workspace before allowing them in production repositories.
