Liquid cooling moves heat away from AI processors through a controlled fluid circuit instead of asking room air to carry all of it. In a typical direct-to-chip installation, liquid runs through cold plates on GPUs and CPUs, absorbs heat, leaves the server, and passes through a cooling distribution unit (CDU) that transfers the heat to a facility loop. Chillers, cooling towers, dry coolers, or a heat-reuse system then reject or reuse that heat.
The approach matters because AI racks are concentrating far more power in a small footprint than conventional servers. The U.S. Department of Energy’s 2024 guide notes that high-performance-computing rack densities rose from about 60 kW in 2013 to more than 125 kW in recently observed systems. That figure is context, not a fleet-wide AI average, but it explains why many facilities are adding liquid or liquid-assisted cooling.

How does liquid cooling work in a data center?
Every watt consumed by a server eventually becomes heat. Liquid cooling captures that heat close to the component producing it, transports it in a sealed or managed loop, transfers it across a heat exchanger, and finally rejects it outside the technology space or delivers it to a useful heat sink.
- Capture: A cold plate, rear-door coil, or immersion bath contacts the heat source. In direct-to-chip systems, a thin layer of thermal interface material connects the processor package to a metal cold plate with internal channels.
- Circulate: A pump moves coolant through the IT-side technology cooling system (TCS). Flow, pressure and temperature are monitored so the liquid remains within the server maker’s operating envelope.
- Condition and transfer: The heated TCS fluid reaches a CDU. The CDU uses a heat exchanger to keep the IT loop separate from the facility loop while controlling supply temperature, pressure, filtration and, in some designs, chemistry.
- Reject or reuse: Facility water or another secondary fluid carries the heat to chillers, cooling towers, dry coolers, hybrid heat-rejection equipment or a nearby heat-reuse load.
DOE diagrams commonly show three interacting circuits: condenser water, facilities water and the technology cooling system. A particular site may combine or subdivide these loops, so the diagram is a design pattern rather than a universal plumbing arrangement.

What heat is captured?
Direct liquid cooling captures the components connected to the liquid circuit. GPUs and CPUs are the usual targets; cold plates can also be designed for memory or other high-power devices. Memory modules that lack liquid plates, voltage regulators, power supplies, storage, fans and network equipment still release heat into the server or rack air. For that reason, a liquid-cooled hall often retains fans, room air handlers or another air system for the residual load.
What is a CDU in liquid cooling?
A cooling distribution unit is the boundary and conditioning point between the IT liquid loop and the facility cooling loop. It is more than a pump: it transfers heat across an exchanger while maintaining the temperature, pressure, flow, filtration and monitoring conditions that the servers require.

Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →The CDU also lets operators isolate the technology loop from building-water variations. Controls can regulate the IT supply temperature, detect abnormal flow or pressure, and trigger alarms or a controlled shutdown. Redundant pumps, heat exchangers, power feeds or CDUs may be specified where a single failure would threaten a high-value cluster.
Why use two loops instead of one?
Separating loops limits the consequences of a leak, contamination event or chemistry mismatch. Server manufacturers may permit a narrow range of conductivity, corrosion inhibitor and biocide, while a facility loop may be treated for different materials and temperatures. The CDU lets each side use a compatible fluid and operating regime while still exchanging heat.
What are the main liquid-cooling architectures?
Cold plates, rear-door heat exchangers and immersion systems remove heat at different points. They are not interchangeable retrofits: each changes server hardware, rack plumbing, maintenance practice and facility requirements.

| Architecture | Where heat is captured | What remains air-cooled | Typical deployment implications |
|---|---|---|---|
| Direct-to-chip cold plates | Processor packages and, where designed, memory or other selected components | Unplated components such as power supplies, storage, fans and some memory | Requires liquid-compatible servers, manifolds, hoses or hard piping, a TCS and CDU; can coexist with room air |
| Rear-door heat exchanger | Rack exhaust air passes through an air-to-liquid coil | Server internals remain air-cooled | Can be added around conventional air-cooled servers, but needs rack liquid connections, condensate control where relevant and sufficient door airflow |
| Single-phase immersion | Electronics sit in a nonconductive liquid that stays liquid | Little or no rack air cooling for immersed parts; external power and service equipment still need consideration | Requires tanks, dielectric-fluid compatibility, lifting and draining procedures, and a different service workflow |
| Two-phase immersion | Dielectric fluid boils at the design temperature; vapor condenses and returns | Immersed electronics are cooled by the bath | Needs sealed or managed tanks, condensers, vapor control and materials compatibility; it is a platform change rather than a drop-in rack upgrade |
DOE describes cold-plate and immersion classes as direct-liquid-cooling technologies. A rear-door exchanger is liquid-assisted because the liquid cools the rack’s exhaust air rather than contacting the electronics directly.

For very dense AI clusters, liquid or liquid-assisted cooling usually provides a more practical path to removing heat than scaling room airflow alone. It is not universally better: the right choice depends on rack density, server compatibility, retrofit scope, climate, water availability, redundancy and the facility’s heat-rejection equipment.
Where liquid has an advantage
- Higher heat-transfer capacity: Liquid carries much more heat in a small flow path than air, allowing high-power racks without extreme fan power or enormous supply-air volumes.
- More precise capture: A cold plate collects heat at the package, reducing the distance and temperature rise before heat reaches the CDU.
- Potentially warmer operating water: If the servers permit higher coolant temperatures, a site may use economizers or dry coolers for more hours, and the warmer heat stream may be easier to reuse.
- Rack-density flexibility: Liquid can support a high-density AI zone while lower-density general-purpose servers remain on air, rather than redesigning the entire hall.
Where air remains useful
- Residual heat from unplated components still needs a path out of the rack.
- Existing air-cooled servers and network rows may be cheaper to leave on the room system.
- Air systems provide a familiar maintenance model and avoid liquid connections at every server when density does not justify them.
ASHRAE’s AI thermal framework recommends separating high-density AI areas from lower-density zones and matching each zone’s cooling architecture to its workload. A hybrid design is often more efficient than forcing one method across a mixed facility.
Does liquid cooling use water?
Sometimes. Water with corrosion inhibitors and biocide is common in technology-cooling loops, but liquid cooling can also use engineered fluids, oils, refrigerants or dielectric fluids. These choices are not interchangeable; materials, seals, pumps, filtration, toxicity controls and server warranties must match the selected fluid.
Using liquid at the rack does not automatically mean the site consumes water. A closed IT loop can circulate the same fluid repeatedly, while the facility side may use evaporative cooling towers, a closed dry cooler, a hybrid system or another heat-rejection method. Cooling towers can consume water through evaporation and blowdown; dry coolers generally shift the burden toward electrical fan power and weather-dependent capacity.

Nor does liquid cooling automatically eliminate chillers. Higher supply temperatures can enable waterside or airside economization when outdoor conditions and equipment envelopes allow it, but a site may still need mechanical cooling during hot weather or for humidity and redundancy requirements. DOE and ASHRAE both emphasize that water and energy outcomes depend on the complete plant and local conditions.
How does heat move from an AI rack to the outdoors?
Consider a direct-to-chip rack operating in a liquid-assisted hall:
- GPU heat crosses the package interface into the cold-plate metal.
- Coolant flowing through the plate gains temperature while remaining within the server’s specified limit.
- Rack manifolds combine the return flow and send it to the CDU.
- The CDU’s primary-side exchanger transfers heat to facilities water without mixing the two fluids.
- Facilities piping carries the heat to a chiller condenser, cooling tower, dry cooler or heat-recovery exchanger.
- The heat-rejection device releases the energy to outdoor air, evaporated water, a building process or another approved sink.
Temperature sensors at the supply, return, rack and CDU let the control system adjust pump speed, valve position and heat-rejection capacity. Flow meters and leak sensors provide additional protection; an alarm may isolate a branch before a small fitting problem becomes a rack outage.
What must be specified before deploying liquid cooling?
A successful design starts with the server and site together, not with a cooling product chosen in isolation.

What are the main retrofit and design trade-offs?
| Decision | Question to answer | Likely consequence |
|---|---|---|
| Cold plate versus rear door | Can the existing servers accept liquid hardware, or must they remain air-cooled? | Cold plates capture heat more directly; rear doors can reduce room load with less server modification but retain internal fan power and air paths. |
| Closed facility loop versus evaporative rejection | Is water conservation or peak-temperature performance the priority? | Dry or closed systems reduce evaporative consumption but may require more fan and plant capacity in hot weather. |
| Warm-water operation | Do every server, CDU and heat-rejection device support the proposed temperatures? | Warmer loops can expand economizer hours and heat-reuse options, but only within the approved thermal envelope. |
| Centralized versus distributed CDUs | Where should isolation, redundancy and maintenance boundaries sit? | Central units may simplify plant integration; distributed units can shorten branches and limit the impact of a local failure. |
How should operators handle failures and maintenance?
Reliability is designed into the fluid path. A pump failure can reduce flow before temperatures visibly rise; a blocked filter can create pressure loss; a partially closed valve can starve one rack; and an incompatible refill can accelerate corrosion. Monitoring should therefore trend flow, differential pressure, supply and return temperature, fluid conductivity or other specified chemistry indicators, and leak alarms.
Maintenance windows should include an isolation plan that keeps unaffected racks running. Technicians need manufacturer-approved fluids and cleaning methods, because mixing glycol blends, inhibitors or dielectric fluids can damage seals or alter heat-transfer performance. After opening a loop, the team should purge air, verify flow at the design setpoint, check for leaks and document the fluid condition before returning the rack to full load.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Can liquid cooling support heat reuse?
It can create a better-quality heat stream for reuse because liquid can deliver heat at a controlled, relatively high temperature instead of dispersing it into low-grade room exhaust. Possible sinks include domestic hot water, industrial processes or district heating, but the sink must be close enough, available when the data center runs and capable of accepting the temperature and flow.
Heat reuse is therefore a site-integration opportunity, not an automatic benefit. A project still needs backup heat rejection for periods when the receiving system is offline or cannot accept the full AI load.
What does the 125+ kW rack figure really mean?
The DOE’s 2024 energy-efficient data center guide contrasts approximately 60 kW high-performance-computing racks observed in 2013 with racks that had recently surpassed 125 kW. The statement illustrates the direction of density growth; it is not a claim that every current AI rack operates above 125 kW, nor a substitute for the measured power profile of a specific deployment.

Designers should model the installed accelerator type, processor utilization, memory, networking, power-conversion losses and growth plan. Cooling capacity sized only to today’s nameplate can leave no margin for denser future configurations or higher utilization.
How do you choose an architecture for a new AI hall?
- Measure the load: Establish present and projected rack power, component-level heat split and acceptable inlet and coolant temperatures.
- Divide the space into density zones: Keep high-density AI racks, conventional servers and network equipment on architectures suited to their actual loads.
- Screen the retrofit boundary: Decide whether servers can be converted, whether rear-door coils fit, or whether immersion requires a dedicated platform and service area.
- Design the loops: Select fluid, materials, CDU arrangement, redundancy, filtration, controls, isolation and leak response as one system.
- Match heat rejection to the site: Compare chillers, towers, dry coolers, economizers and heat reuse using local weather, water and energy constraints.
- Commission at operating extremes: Test minimum and maximum flow, loss of a pump or CDU, valve isolation, sensor alarms, restart behavior and the residual air load before accepting production operation.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can a liquid-cooled server be serviced without draining the whole data center?
Usually, a properly segmented design allows a rack or branch to be isolated with valves and serviced while other branches continue operating. The exact procedure depends on the manifold, quick-disconnects, CDU arrangement and the server manufacturer’s approved draining and refill steps.
What happens if the cooling liquid leaks near a GPU?
Leak detection should alarm quickly and controls can isolate the affected branch or stop pumps, limiting the amount released. Operators then follow a documented electrical-safety, containment, draining and component-inspection procedure; a leak response is not the same as simply wiping condensation from a server.
Can existing air-cooled servers share a room with liquid-cooled AI racks?
Yes. Many facilities create a high-density liquid or liquid-assisted zone and retain conventional air cooling elsewhere. The room design must still account for residual air heat, airflow containment, humidity limits and the different maintenance clearances of each rack type.
Which liquid is safest for a data-center cooling loop?
There is no universal safest fluid. Water-based coolants, engineered fluids, refrigerants and dielectric liquids have different fire, toxicity, corrosion, conductivity, materials and service implications, so the server, CDU and facility specifications must be evaluated together.
Does a higher coolant temperature always reduce operating cost?
No. Higher temperatures may increase economizer or dry-cooler hours, but pumps, fans, chillers, weather, redundancy and heat-rejection controls determine the whole-plant result. A change is beneficial only if every connected component remains within its rated thermal envelope.
