In a direct-to-chip liquid-cooled AI rack, cold plates collect heat from selected processors and transfer it to coolant circulating through the servers. That warmed coolant flows to a coolant distribution unit (CDU), which moves the heat into a separate facility-water loop; the cooled equipment-side coolant then returns to the cold plates. The rack is therefore part of a larger cooling system, not a self-contained appliance—and liquid cooling does not necessarily replace air cooling for every component.

What happens to heat in a liquid-cooled AI rack?

In the common direct-to-chip (D2C) arrangement, a cold plate sits against a heat-producing component such as a CPU or GPU. Heat passes from the component into the plate, then into coolant flowing through channels inside it. Hoses and manifolds carry the warmed coolant away from the servers to a coolant distribution unit. There, a heat exchanger transfers heat to facility water without requiring the two fluids to mix. Pumps send the cooled equipment-side coolant back to the cold plates, while the facility loop carries the collected heat onward to the building’s heat-rejection equipment.

A simple way to picture the system is as two connected loops with different jobs. The technology cooling system (TCS) loop circulates coolant through equipment and collects heat; the facility water system (FWS) loop removes that heat from the CDU and transports it through facility infrastructure. The CDU is the boundary between them. ASHRAE’s 2019 guide to water-cooled servers and its data-center chapter describe the core components and heat-transfer arrangement.

How does coolant move through the system?

Follow the path from the processor outward: heat enters the cold plate, coolant carries it through the rack-side distribution network, and the CDU passes it into the facility loop. The returning equipment-side coolant is then ready to collect more heat.

  1. Capture heat: A cold plate mounted on a selected processor conducts heat into its internal coolant channels.
  2. Collect warmed coolant: Server tubing connects the plates to supply and return connections. The return side carries heated coolant toward rack manifolds.
  3. Aggregate and route flow: Rack manifolds collect or distribute coolant, and hoses connect the rack to row-level distribution where the facility design uses it. Isolation valves and quick disconnects help manage connections.
  4. Transfer heat at the CDU: The CDU’s heat exchanger moves heat from the TCS coolant to the FWS. The fluids are separate streams; heat crosses the exchanger rather than requiring a shared fluid circuit.
  5. Send heat away: Facility water transports the heat to the site’s heat-rejection equipment. What that equipment is and how it is configured are facility design questions, not properties of the cold plate alone.
  6. Return cooled TCS coolant: Pumps circulate the equipment-side coolant back through the supply distribution path and into the cold plates.

This looped path explains why a rack can have liquid connections but still depend on equipment elsewhere in the building. A cold plate captures heat locally; the CDU and facility system complete the route that removes it from the data center.

What parts make up the rack-side cooling path?

The liquid path is a set of connected components, plus instrumentation and controls that help operators monitor and manage conditions. The exact layout varies by system.

Component Role in the system
Cold plates Receive heat from selected processors and transfer it to coolant moving through internal channels.
Server tubing and hoses Carry coolant between cold plates, server connections, and the distribution network.
Supply and return manifolds Distribute coolant to equipment and collect returning coolant. Row-level distribution may extend the route beyond the rack.
CDU Circulates the TCS coolant and transfers its heat to facility water through a heat exchanger; it may also filter and control the coolant.
Valves and quick disconnects Support isolation and equipment connections. Quick disconnects can allow equipment access while other equipment remains operating when the system and service procedure are designed for that work.
Sensors and controls Monitor conditions such as temperature, pressure, flow, and leaks, and support operation of the cooling system.

A CDU is more than a pump. It provides the heat-transfer boundary between the equipment and facility networks, circulates the TCS fluid, and may include filtration and controls. Depending on the design, it can be mounted in a rack or outside it and serve one rack or several. ASHRAE’s 2019 data-center chapter covers distribution components, while its water-cooled-server guide describes common system elements.

Does liquid cooling replace air cooling?

No. D2C cooling removes heat from components connected to cold plates; it does not mean that every server component or the entire data hall is liquid cooled. Fans and room-air systems may still be needed for components outside the liquid path and for residual heat.

ASHRAE’s AI Data Center Energy Performance Framework recommends matching cooling architecture to rack density and retaining air cooling for lower-density areas where appropriate. In a hybrid design, liquid removes heat from selected high-power processors while air handles other loads. The proportion handled by each method depends on the equipment and facility design; “liquid cooled” alone does not reveal how much air cooling remains.

It is also important to distinguish D2C from other liquid-cooling architectures. A rear-door heat exchanger removes heat from server exhaust air, while an immersion system places equipment in dielectric liquid. These approaches move heat in different ways, so a claim about “liquid cooling” should identify which arrangement it means. ASHRAE’s data-center chapter discusses the broader cooling context.

Why do temperature and monitoring matter?

Coolant must be kept within conditions suitable for the IT equipment and surrounding environment. One particularly important concern is condensation: if a surface becomes colder than the surrounding air’s dew point, moisture can form. Dell Technologies’ 2025 paper, Key Cooling Strategies for AI Deployments, describes controlling TCS coolant supply temperature above dew point to reduce this risk.

There is no single temperature, pressure, or flow value that can be applied to every AI rack. The required operating conditions depend on the specific IT equipment, cooling class, fluid, facility, and system design. The equipment and facility specifications—not a generic internet rule—must determine fluid choice and water quality, supply conditions, pressure, flow, and connection details.

Monitoring helps operators see whether the system is operating within its design conditions. ASHRAE’s AI framework identifies temperature, pressure, flow, and leak detection among the instrumentation used in liquid-cooling systems. The system also needs distribution capacity, suitable pumping and valves, and a means to reject the heat delivered to the facility loop. A sensor reading only becomes operationally useful when the site has defined thresholds and a response procedure for it.

What should a facility decide before choosing a design?

Liquid cooling is an infrastructure decision involving the servers, rack distribution, CDU, facility water, heat rejection, and operations. Comparing systems requires more than asking whether they use liquid; the key questions concern how the heat is captured, where the CDU sits, and what conditions the full installation can support.

  • Architecture: Is the design direct-to-chip, a rear-door heat exchanger, immersion, or a combination? Each handles heat differently.
  • Distribution: Does the CDU serve one rack or multiple racks, and is it in-rack or external? How are row connections, manifolds, isolation, and equipment access arranged?
  • Capacity and resilience: Does the full path—from cold plates through the CDU to facility heat rejection—meet the intended load and reliability requirements? Capacity and redundancy are design-specific.
  • Fluid compatibility: What fluid and water-quality requirements apply to the equipment, distribution components, and CDU?
  • Operating conditions: What supply temperature, pressure, and flow are required, and how will dew-point margin be maintained?
  • Serviceability: How will technicians isolate and disconnect equipment, and what procedures govern work while other equipment remains online?
  • Air cooling still needed: Which server components and room loads remain outside the liquid path, and how will they be cooled?
  • Monitoring and response: Which temperature, pressure, flow, and leak signals are available, and who responds when a condition needs attention?

These questions have no universal answers because rack density, hardware, facility water, climate, reliability targets, and operating practices differ. ASHRAE’s data-center guidance and AI data-center framework frame cooling selection as a facility-level decision rather than a component swap.

What does liquid cooling not tell you by itself?

The label alone does not establish a rack’s cooling capacity, energy use, fluid requirements, operating temperature, or reliability. Those depend on the full implementation and the specified equipment.

It also does not show whether a design cools every component with liquid, whether its CDU is in the rack, or whether facility water directly contacts the server-side coolant. In the two-loop arrangement described here, a heat exchanger transfers heat between separate circuits. A different configuration or a different type of liquid-cooling system should be described on its own terms.

Finally, the existence of quick disconnects does not mean that any server can be safely disconnected at any time. Continued operation of other equipment during service depends on system design and appropriate procedures. Similarly, leak detection is a monitoring capability, not a substitute for sound installation, maintenance, and an operational response plan.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can liquid cooling be added to an existing AI rack?

It may be possible, but the cooling path must be designed around the servers, connections, distribution capacity, CDU, facility water, and heat-rejection system. The available source material does not establish a universal retrofit method or compatibility standard, so the equipment and facility specifications need to be checked together.

Does liquid cooling use less water than air cooling?

The sources cited here do not establish a general water-consumption comparison. Water use depends on the facility’s heat-rejection design and operating conditions, so the presence of cold plates alone is not enough to answer the question.

Will an AI rack with liquid cooling still have fans?

It can: hybrid arrangements may use server fans and room air for components that are not connected to cold plates and for residual heat. Whether a specific rack uses fans, and how much air cooling it needs, depends on its implementation.

What happens if a leak sensor detects coolant?

A leak sensor can alert operators to a condition that needs attention, but the cited guidance does not prescribe a single response sequence for every facility. Operators need site-specific thresholds, isolation procedures, and escalation plans that match the system design.
