LangGraph is the control layer for an LLM workflow that must do more than run once from start to finish. You define a shared state, functions that read and update it, and edges that decide what runs next. An edge can point to an earlier node, so a tool call can return to the model, a failed validation can trigger revision, or a human can inspect and change state before execution continues. Checkpoints preserve a conversation or job between interruptions, while a separate store keeps application data available across threads. This explicit, low-level approach gives you control over loops, branching, retries, persistence, and human approval instead of hiding those decisions inside a fixed agent loop.

What is LangGraph?

LangGraph is a low-level orchestration framework and runtime for building, managing, and deploying long-running, stateful agents. Its central abstraction is a directed graph: state is the current application snapshot, nodes are functions that perform work, and edges select the next node. A node may contain ordinary deterministic code, a retrieval operation, a tool invocation, or an LLM call.

The graph is not merely a diagram used for documentation. It is the workflow definition that the runtime executes. Because an edge may lead to a node that already ran, you can represent iteration explicitly rather than hoping a model will repeat a step correctly. Conditional edges make the decision visible: continue, retry, ask for approval, call a tool, or finish.

Why a graph instead of a linear chain?

A fixed pipeline is useful when every input follows the same sequence. Real applications often need a different path after each result. A search may return insufficient evidence, a tool may fail, a validator may reject a draft, or a user may request a change. LangGraph lets your code inspect the updated state and route execution accordingly, while keeping the rules under your control.

How does LangGraph work?

At runtime, LangGraph passes state through nodes in discrete execution steps. Each node receives the state available at that point and returns an update; edges then use the resulting state to select the next node. Nodes that can run in parallel may share one execution super-step, while dependent nodes run in later steps.

State: the shared work record

State should contain the information required to make the next routing decision: messages, tool results, validation errors, attempt counts, approval flags, and any structured output being assembled. Treat it as a deliberately designed schema rather than an unbounded transcript. A clear schema makes it easier to inspect a run, recover it, and prove that a loop has a stopping condition.

Nodes: units of work

A node can normalize input, retrieve documents, call an external API, ask a model to plan, validate a result, or format a response. Keep side effects and deterministic checks in ordinary code where possible. A model node can propose an action, but a separate tool node can execute it and record the result in state.

Edges: control flow

An unconditional edge always selects one destination. A conditional edge evaluates state and chooses among destinations. A loop is simply a conditional route back to an earlier node. Nothing about the cycle is automatic or magical: you define the condition, the destination, and the state update that should eventually make the condition false.

How do I make an LLM call a tool and then loop back?

Use separate model, tool, and decision steps. The model proposes a tool call or a final answer; the router checks the model output; a tool node executes approved calls and appends results; the next edge sends those results back to the model or exits when the answer is ready.

  1. Initialize state. Store the user request, message history, an empty tool-result collection, and an attempt counter.
  2. Run the model node. Ask the model to decide whether it needs a tool or can answer. Record its structured decision in state rather than parsing prose when your model interface supports structured output.
  3. Route the decision. If a tool call is present, route to the tool node. If the model produced a final answer, route to validation or an end node.
  4. Execute the tool node. Validate the tool name and arguments, enforce authorization and timeouts, run the tool, and append a success or error result to state.
  5. Return to the model. Route the updated state to the model node so it can interpret the new result, select another tool, or draft a final response.
  6. Validate and terminate. A validator can accept the answer, request a revision route, or stop with a controlled error when a limit is reached.

The following pseudocode illustrates the shape, not a guaranteed copy-and-paste API. LangGraph package names and method signatures can change, so check the current reference before adapting it to production.

state = {messages: [], tool_results: [], attempts: 0, status: "running"}

model(state)        -> {messages: [...], next_action: "tool" | "final"}
run_tool(state)     -> {tool_results: [...], attempts: state.attempts + 1}
validate(state)     -> {status: "accepted" | "revise" | "failed"}

START -> model
model --tool--> run_tool
run_tool -> model
model --final--> validate
validate --revise--> model
validate --accepted--> END
validate --failed--> END

In a production graph, add a maximum attempt count, tool timeouts, input validation, and an explicit failure route. Those safeguards prevent a bad tool result or an always-failing validator from creating an endless cycle.

How should I design state and loop conditions?

Design state around decisions the graph must make, then make each loop condition measurable. A useful state field might be validation_errors, tool_results, needs_human_review, or attempts; a vague field such as “keep trying” is harder to test and audit.

Use structured outcomes

Have validators return a small, explicit outcome such as accepted, revise, or failed. Keep diagnostic details alongside the outcome so the next model or human can act on them. Avoid routing on fragile string matching when a typed value or schema is available.

Guarantee termination

Every cycle needs at least one path to completion or controlled failure. Common guards include a maximum number of model-tool rounds, a wall-clock deadline, a token or cost budget, and a circuit breaker for repeated identical requests. When a guard trips, preserve the state and return an actionable error rather than silently discarding the run.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Separate transient and durable data

Current messages and intermediate tool results belong in graph state for the active run. Durable preferences, reusable facts, or records that must be available to several conversations belong in an application store. This separation prevents a single thread’s temporary context from becoming accidental global memory.

What is the difference between a LangGraph checkpointer and a store?

They solve different persistence problems. A checkpointer saves graph-state checkpoints associated with a thread; a store saves application-defined data that can be reused across threads.

Persistence component Scope What it contains Typical use
Checkpointer One graph thread or conversation State snapshots at execution points Continue after an interruption, recover after a failure, inspect prior steps, or resume human approval
Store Across threads Application data chosen by you Reusable preferences, user facts, or other records needed by multiple runs

A system can use both. For example, a checkpointer can preserve the exact state of an order-review thread while a store retains a customer’s approved shipping preference for future threads. Calling both features “memory” without naming the scope makes it difficult to reason about privacy, retention, and consistency.

How do interruptions and human review fit into a graph?

Human oversight is a normal execution path, not an afterthought. Route to a review node when a policy threshold is crossed, a high-impact action is proposed, or the model’s confidence is insufficient. Persist the state before pausing, present the relevant fields to the reviewer, and resume from the next edge after approval, rejection, or an edited value.

  • Inspect: show the proposed action, supporting tool results, and the exact state fields that led to it.
  • Modify: let an authorized reviewer correct arguments or state rather than forcing a new run that loses context.
  • Resume: continue from the checkpoint with an explicit decision recorded in state.
  • Audit: retain who approved or changed the action and when, subject to your retention policy.

Persistence also supports recovery from process restarts. A resumed run should be idempotent where possible: do not charge a card, send an email, or mutate a database twice merely because execution was retried after an uncertain network response.

What is the difference between LangGraph and LangChain?

LangGraph is the lower-level orchestration layer; LangChain offers higher-level components and prebuilt agent abstractions. The official positioning recommends a higher-level LangChain agent when a standard agent loop meets your needs, while those agents are built on LangGraph underneath.

Question Choose a higher-level agent abstraction when… Choose LangGraph directly when…
Control A conventional tool-calling loop is sufficient You need custom branches, cycles, retries, or coordination rules
State Short-lived context is enough You need explicit schemas, thread checkpoints, or cross-thread data boundaries
Oversight Runs can complete without approval People must inspect, edit, pause, or resume execution
Assembly speed You want a prebuilt architecture with less wiring You accept more implementation work in exchange for precise behavior

This is an abstraction decision, not a claim that one option is universally better. Start with the simplest layer that expresses your requirements; move lower when hidden control-flow assumptions become a problem.

When is LangGraph worth choosing?

Choose it when the application needs explicit state transitions and the workflow is expected to run for a while, branch, retry, pause, or coordinate multiple steps. It is particularly suitable for review-heavy processes, tool-using assistants, multi-agent coordination, and jobs that must survive interruption.

What implementation pitfalls should I plan for?

Unbounded cycles

Log every transition and enforce attempts, time, and budget limits. If the same state repeats, detect it and route to a diagnostic or human-review path.

Unsafe tool execution

Never treat a model-proposed tool call as authorization. Allow-list tools, validate arguments, apply least-privilege credentials, and isolate side effects. Record tool errors in structured state so the model can respond without receiving hidden exceptions.

Duplicate side effects after retries

Use idempotency keys or transactional safeguards for external writes. A checkpoint tells you where the graph was, but it cannot undo a request that already reached a third-party service.

State that grows without bound

Summarize or archive old messages, store large artifacts outside the message history, and keep only the fields needed for routing. Large state increases model context, storage, and inspection complexity.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Assuming documentation is static

Framework APIs evolve. Confirm package versions, graph-construction calls, persistence integrations, and model adapters against the current LangGraph documentation before shipping code. Test both a successful loop and every termination branch.

How can I evaluate a LangGraph workflow before deployment?

Test the graph as a state machine, not only as a chat demo. Feed known states into each node, verify that each conditional edge selects the intended destination, and simulate tool failures, malformed model output, timeouts, process restarts, and reviewer edits.

  1. Define fixtures for an immediate final answer, one tool round, multiple tool rounds, validation failure, and human rejection.
  2. Assert state updates after every node, including attempt counters and error fields.
  3. Verify that every cycle reaches acceptance or a bounded failure route.
  4. Restart between checkpoints and confirm that resumption does not repeat non-idempotent side effects.
  5. Inspect traces or event logs to correlate model decisions, tool calls, state changes, and approvals.

Do not infer speed, accuracy, or cost improvements solely from adopting a graph. Those outcomes depend on model choice, prompts, tools, state size, and routing policy; the framework’s value is controllable orchestration.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can LangGraph run without an LLM?

Yes. Nodes are ordinary functions, so a graph can contain only deterministic validation, database, or API steps. An LLM is optional; it is just one type of node.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How do I stop a LangGraph loop safely?

Give the cycle explicit guards such as maximum attempts, deadlines, and budget limits, and route guard failures to a controlled error or review state. Also detect repeated identical states when a model keeps proposing the same action.

Does a checkpointer automatically create long-term user memory?

No. A checkpointer preserves graph state for a thread. Long-lived information shared by different threads must be written to and read from a separately designed store.

Can two LangGraph nodes run at the same time?

They can when the graph’s dependencies permit parallel execution; such nodes may execute in one super-step. Steps that depend on earlier updates run afterward, so design state merges and side effects carefully.
