Yes— inflation is affecting eCommerce, even though online revenue continues to rise. U.S. eCommerce sales reached $1,233.7 billion in 2025, up 5.4% from 2024 and representing 16.4% of all retail sales. However, Census sales are not adjusted for price changes, so that increase does not show whether shoppers bought 5.4% more goods. On the household side, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reported that consumer-unit spending rose 1.8% in 2024 while prices rose 2.9%, producing a 1.1% decline in inflation-adjusted spending. For an online merchant, the practical answer is to separate price from volume, then judge revenue alongside conversion, orders, units, costs, contribution margin, and repeat purchasing.
Is inflation hurting online shopping?
Inflation reduces what each dollar can buy. That pressure can affect an online store even when its payment reports show higher sales. A shopper may still place an order, but choose a cheaper item, wait for a promotion, reduce the quantity, or postpone a discretionary purchase. Those are plausible operating effects of weaker purchasing power, not universal outcomes for every category.

The BLS consumer-spending figures show why the distinction matters. In 2024, average consumer-unit spending increased 1.8% in nominal terms, while prices increased 2.9%; real spending therefore fell 1.1%. In 2023, nominal spending rose 5.9%, prices rose 4.1%, and real spending still increased 1.8%. The same store can therefore face very different demand conditions from one year to the next even if its checkout revenue appears healthy.
The Federal Reserve defines inflation as an increase in the prices of goods and services over time. Its longer-run framework seeks a 2% annual increase in the personal consumption expenditures (PCE) price index. That target is a reference point for economic analysis, not a guarantee that an individual product, shipping lane, or advertising market will rise by 2%.

Are eCommerce sales really growing, or are prices simply higher?
U.S. eCommerce is growing in reported dollars, but the latest national estimate cannot by itself identify the source of that growth. The U.S. Census Bureau’s 2026 release covering 2025 reports the following:
| Measure | 2025 result | Year-over-year comparison | Qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| U.S. eCommerce sales | $1,233.7 billion | Up 5.4% from 2024 | Sales are reported without adjustment for price changes |
| eCommerce share of total retail | 16.4% | Share for 2025 | U.S. total |
| Total retail sales | Not stated in the cited release | Up 3.5% in 2025 | Comparison supplied by Census |
Because the Census series is nominal, the 5.4% increase could combine higher prices, a different mix of products, and more units sold. It is evidence that online dollar sales expanded faster than total retail sales, which grew 3.5%, but it is not evidence that physical demand increased by 5.4%.
What is the difference between nominal and real eCommerce growth?
Nominal growth is the change in the dollars collected. Real growth attempts to remove the effect of changing prices so that the remaining change better represents purchasing volume. A basic calculation is:
Real growth ≈ (1 + nominal growth) ÷ (1 + inflation rate) − 1
For example, a store whose revenue rises 10% while the relevant price index rises 3% has approximate real growth of 6.8%, not 10%. This is an illustration, not a reported market result. The index must match the question: a category-specific measure is preferable for a category analysis, while a broad PCE or consumer-price measure can support company-wide monitoring. Use one index consistently across periods and state which index, geography, and time window you used.
Do not call revenue “real growth” merely because orders increased. If prices, product mix, bundles, or shipping charges changed, orders and revenue can move at different rates.
Which metrics show whether online demand is actually growing?
A useful dashboard places demand, price, and profitability measures next to one another rather than treating revenue as a verdict.

| Metric | What it tells you during inflation | Interpretation to test |
|---|---|---|
| Orders | Number of completed purchases | Orders rising more slowly than revenue can indicate price-led growth |
| Units per order | Quantity in each basket | A falling value can indicate smaller baskets or trade-down |
| Average order value | Revenue divided by orders | Higher AOV may come from price increases, mix, or larger baskets |
| Conversion rate | Share of visits that purchase | Declines can offset traffic gains when shoppers become more cautious |
| Customer acquisition cost | Marketing cost per new customer | Rising acquisition expense can erase nominal revenue gains |
| Gross and contribution margin | Money left after product and variable selling costs | Shows whether price changes cover cost inflation |
| Repeat-purchase rate | Retention and subsequent orders | Tests whether first-order growth becomes durable demand |
Review the same measures by product, customer cohort, device, channel, and region where your data permits. A company-wide AOV can conceal a shift from premium items to lower-priced items, while a total conversion rate can hide a serious problem in a high-margin category.
Why can sales rise while eCommerce margins fall?
Revenue is the selling price multiplied by units sold. Profit depends on what remains after product cost, freight, labor, advertising, payment fees, returns, and other variable costs. Inflation can raise several of those inputs at once, so a seller may collect more dollars while retaining less per order.
Track a contribution-margin bridge for each important SKU or order:
- Start with net selling price after discounts.
- Subtract product or manufacturing cost.
- Subtract inbound freight, warehousing, and fulfillment.
- Subtract payment processing, marketplace or channel fees, and advertising assigned to the order.
- Subtract expected return, refund, and replacement cost.
- Compare the result with the prior period and with the price change.
A price increase protects margin only if customers continue to convert and the resulting return rate does not rise enough to consume the gain. Monitor gross margin and contribution margin separately: gross margin may improve while fulfillment or acquisition expenses leave contribution margin unchanged or lower.
How should an online store price products during inflation?
There is no single inflation percentage that should be added to every product. Price decisions work better when they begin with costs and customer response at the SKU or segment level.
1. Establish the current cost floor
Refresh landed cost with product, freight, labor, storage, payment, advertising, and expected return expenses. Record the date and source of every input so a later change can be attributed to cost, price, or mix.
2. Segment by customer need and willingness to switch
Separate necessities, replenishment items, discretionary products, premium versions, and highly comparable commodities. A price move that is tolerable for a differentiated product may cause a sharper conversion response where shoppers can switch easily.

3. Test the smallest useful change
Use controlled price or promotion tests where traffic volume supports them. Compare conversion, units, net revenue, contribution margin, and returns—not conversion alone. If a test cannot be isolated, label the result as directional rather than causal.
4. Give customers clear value choices
Consider pack sizes, good-better-best versions, or an appropriately limited promotion instead of applying the same discount everywhere. Make shipping charges and delivery conditions visible before payment; an unexpected total can change conversion even when the item price is unchanged.
5. Set a review trigger
Define the input-cost, margin, or conversion change that prompts another review. Frequent unannounced changes can undermine trust, while waiting for an annual review can leave a large cost gap.
How do I separate price effects from volume effects?
Use a simple price-volume-mix decomposition rather than reading the revenue line in isolation.

How can consumer behavior change under inflation?
Lower real spending capacity can produce trade-down, delayed purchases, smaller baskets, increased use of promotions, or substitution toward lower-cost channels. The BLS figures establish the pressure on purchasing power; they do not prove that every shopper or category responds in the same way.
To determine what is happening in your store, compare new and returning customers, full-price and promotional orders, entry-level and premium SKUs, and purchase intervals. Watch cancellations and customer-service contacts for signs that the final delivered price is surprising buyers. Avoid treating one unusually promotional week as a permanent change in demand.

Which inflation measure should an eCommerce operator use?
Use an established price index and keep the choice consistent. The Federal Reserve’s longer-run framework uses the PCE price index and identifies 2% annual inflation as most consistent with its mandate. A consumer-price index may be useful for a different analysis, particularly when it better represents the products or household costs being studied.
The index is a measurement tool, not a substitute for your own realized prices. A store selling one narrow category may experience cost and selling-price changes that diverge substantially from a national index. State the index, period, geography, and whether the calculation covers selling prices, costs, or household spending.
What should an inflation-aware eCommerce dashboard contain?
Build the dashboard around four linked questions: Are customers buying more, are they paying more, are costs rising faster, and is the business retaining enough margin?
- Demand: sessions, conversion, orders, units, units per order, and repeat-purchase rate.
- Price and mix: realized price per unit, discount rate, AOV, bundle share, and category mix.
- Economics: product cost, freight, labor, advertising, payment fees, returns, gross margin, and contribution margin.
- Customer quality: acquisition cost, first-order margin, cohort retention, refunds, and cancellations.
- Context: the chosen inflation index, comparison period, major price changes, and supply or fulfillment events.
Annotate the dashboard when a price change, promotion, assortment change, or cost reclassification occurs. Otherwise, a valid movement in one metric can be mistaken for inflation when it was caused by a merchandising or measurement change.

Calling nominal growth real demand
Fix it by reporting revenue with orders, units, and an inflation-adjusted comparison.

Using AOV as a demand score
AOV can rise because prices rose or because customers selected a more expensive mix. Pair it with units per order and realized price per unit.
Raising prices without a margin bridge
Recalculate variable costs and returns after the change. A higher list price is not a higher contribution margin until the complete order economics confirm it.

What should an operator do in the next 30 days?
- Export at least 12 months of orders, units, net revenue, discounts, returns, and customer identifiers.
- Build a SKU-level table of realized price, landed cost, fulfillment, marketing, payment, and return expense.
- Calculate nominal revenue growth and a real-growth view using one named price index.
- Decompose AOV into price per unit, units per order, and product mix.
- Segment results by category, customer cohort, channel, and region where reliable data exists.
- Identify products where input costs rose faster than realized selling prices.
- Test a targeted price, pack-size, or promotion change and judge it on contribution margin as well as conversion.
- Set a recurring review of the dashboard and document every pricing, assortment, and cost-accounting change.
What is the practical answer for your store?
Inflation is affecting eCommerce in two directions at once: it can reduce shoppers’ inflation-adjusted spending while increasing the dollars required to acquire, stock, fulfill, and support each order. U.S. online sales reached a record nominal level in 2025, but the Census measure does not remove price changes. Treat revenue as the starting signal, then use volume, price, mix, cost, margin, and retention measures to determine whether growth is genuine, profitable, and repeatable.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can inflation affect conversion rate even when website traffic increases?
Yes. More visits can come from lower-intent audiences while higher prices make shoppers less willing to complete a purchase. Compare traffic sources, device type, landing page, and checkout abandonment so a conversion change is not attributed to inflation without supporting evidence.
Should every cost increase be passed directly to customers?
No. Passing through the full increase may protect unit economics but reduce conversion or accelerate substitution. Evaluate the affected SKU’s contribution margin, competitive alternatives, and customer mix before choosing a price increase, pack change, promotion, or assortment adjustment.
How should subscription businesses measure inflation pressure?
Track renewal price, churn, pauses, downgrades, failed payments, and the cost to serve each renewal. A stable subscriber count can hide weaker economics if customers move to cheaper tiers or if fulfillment and support costs rise.
