To see the same messages, photos, and supported app data on two iPhones, sign in to the same Apple Account on both and enable the relevant iCloud feature on each phone. iCloud sync keeps supported data current across devices; iCloud Backup serves a different purpose, saving a restore snapshot of information that is not already syncing. The distinction matters: having the same app installed, or backing up both phones, does not automatically make every app’s data match.
How does iCloud keep two iPhones in sync?
iCloud uses two related but separate mechanisms: synchronization and backup. Synchronization maintains a shared cloud copy for a supported feature and updates devices where that feature is enabled. Backup stores a snapshot that can help restore a device; it is not a live mirror that continually makes two phones identical.

The controls are independent: Messages can sync on one device while being off on the other, and Photos can be enabled or disabled separately. This is why “I use the same account” is necessary but not sufficient if a feature is switched off on one phone.
Think of iCloud sync as the shared, continuously updated version of particular data, and a backup as a recovery copy of eligible data from a device. Apple notes that information already syncing through iCloud is handled separately from daily iCloud Backup. Keeping both mechanisms in mind clarifies what you should configure for everyday access and what you should retain for device restoration.

How do I set up two iPhones to share iCloud data?
Use the same Apple Account on both phones, then check each desired service on each device. The settings must agree on both iPhones; enabling a service on only one does not make it active on the other.
- On each iPhone, confirm that you are signed in to the same Apple Account. Apple describes this as the requirement for seeing the same iCloud information across devices.
- On each phone, open Settings > [your name] > iCloud.
- Turn on Messages in iCloud on both phones. In newer iOS versions, the control may be labeled Use on this iPhone.
- Turn on Photos and Sync this iPhone on both phones if you want a shared, current Photos library.
- Review the Apps Using iCloud list. Enable the apps whose supported iCloud data you want available on both devices.
- Keep iCloud Backup enabled if you want a restore snapshot for device recovery. It complements syncing; it does not replace it.
After changing a setting, allow the feature to use iCloud and check the corresponding app on the other phone. The exact time before data appears is not established here, so do not assume an immediate update proves a setup failure. First verify that both phones use the intended account and that the same feature is enabled on each.
What syncs in Messages, and what happens to deleted messages?
Messages in iCloud is the live-sync option for message history. When it is active on both iPhones under the same Apple Account, sent, received, and deleted messages are updated across the user’s Apple devices automatically.
If Messages in iCloud is off on one phone, that phone’s message history will not stay current through this sync feature. A message may instead be part of that phone’s iCloud Backup, but that is a backup-and-restore path rather than a shared live message history. When Messages in iCloud is active, Apple says messages are not included in the daily iCloud Backup because they sync to iCloud separately.

Deletion has the same shared-data implication as other synced changes: deleting a message while using Messages in iCloud is not simply a local cleanup on one phone. The change propagates to the other enabled Apple devices. Treat the feature as one message history viewed from multiple devices, not as two independent copies where deleting one can never affect the other.
How does iCloud Photos work across two iPhones?
With iCloud Photos enabled on both devices, the Photos library is uploaded to iCloud and made available on devices using the same Apple Account with iCloud Photos turned on. Changes made on one device, including edits, are reflected on the others.

Apple’s description includes photos, videos, metadata, and edits. The library is stored in original formats at full resolution, subject to available iCloud storage and device settings. This makes iCloud Photos useful when you want a shared library rather than a one-time transfer of a selected batch of pictures.
Local device storage and iCloud storage are separate considerations. Apple identifies device settings that affect how originals are stored on a device, including space optimization; that does not change the fact that the iCloud Photos library contains full-resolution originals. The amount of space a particular library requires varies with the person’s photos and videos, so there is no universal storage estimate for two iPhones.

If iCloud Photos is off, photos and videos may instead be included in an iCloud Backup. That arrangement is not equivalent to a live, shared library: backup is primarily for restoring the device, while iCloud Photos synchronizes library changes among devices with the feature enabled.
Why can the same app show different data on each iPhone?
Installing an app on both phones is separate from syncing its data. An app can be present on each iPhone while its information remains different if the app does not implement iCloud synchronization, or if its relevant account or iCloud feature is not enabled.
Apps that use iCloud Drive or another iCloud service can store data there and sync independently of device backup. Other downloaded apps may have eligible app data included in iCloud Backup when they do not sync that information through iCloud. A backup can help return data to a device during restoration, but it does not by itself promise that an app’s latest state will appear live on a second phone.
Third-party behavior is app-specific. Apple’s documentation does not promise that every app syncs its data. Check the app’s own account and sync settings, as well as its entry under Settings > [your name] > iCloud. If the app has no supported iCloud sync path, toggling unrelated iCloud settings cannot create one.

What is the difference between iCloud sync and iCloud Backup?
Sync keeps selected information current across devices; backup preserves eligible device data for restoration. They solve different problems and can both be useful on the same iPhone.

The practical choice is not “sync or backup.” Enable the appropriate sync feature for information you want kept current across phones, and retain backup for the broader recovery role. Whether a particular app’s data syncs or is only represented in a backup depends on that app’s implementation.
What happens when I turn an iCloud feature off on one iPhone?
Feature controls apply per device. Turning a feature off on one phone removes that iCloud data from that phone’s view, while the data remains available on other devices where the feature stays enabled.
This behavior is not the same as deleting the shared data. For example, switching off a sync feature on one iPhone does not, by itself, mean the data has been erased from every other device. Conversely, when a service is on and you delete or edit synced content, that change is made to the shared iCloud data and appears on other enabled devices. Check which action you are taking—disabling access on a device or changing content in the synchronized library—before proceeding.
How much iCloud storage do two iPhones need?
Apple’s iCloud User Guide lists 5 GB of free iCloud storage. iCloud+ is Apple’s paid route to additional storage and features. Two iPhones using the same Apple Account draw from the same iCloud storage pool, so both devices’ iCloud data can contribute to capacity use.
Full-resolution photo and video libraries and device backups can use space quickly, but the amount depends on the actual data stored; it is not a fixed quota per phone. If storage is full or close to it, check which categories are using capacity and decide whether to remove data, adjust what is stored, or obtain additional iCloud storage. A precise plan price or regional availability is not included here, so check Apple’s current iCloud+ storage plans for your location before choosing.

Do I need the same Apple Account for both iPhones to share iCloud data?
Yes. Apple’s guidance says to sign in to the same Apple Account on each device to see the same iCloud information. An app may still require its own account or settings for its data to sync.
Will iCloud Backup make my second iPhone match the first one automatically?
No. Backup is for restoring a device from a saved snapshot, not for continuously mirroring two phones. To keep supported messages or photos current across both, use their respective iCloud sync features.
Can I use different iCloud settings on each iPhone?
Yes. iCloud features can be enabled independently per device. That can be useful if you want one iPhone to access a particular synced category and the other not to.
Does every iPhone app sync its data through iCloud?
