A Chrome or Edge extension can caption Japanese audio as it plays in a browser tab, show the original line alongside a Chinese or English translation, and let you keep watching instead of pausing to rewind. The design described here captures tab audio, sends short speech segments through a Cloudflare Worker to a per-session Durable Object, and displays captions in a floating overlay. It is a near-real-time approach—not a claim of perfect transcription or a measured guarantee of half-second delivery.
Why caption the tab instead of pausing the stream?
When a Japanese stream moves faster than you can follow, pausing, scrubbing back eight to twelve seconds, and checking a dictionary can turn one unclear line into a break in the whole viewing experience. The goal of tab-audio captions is to keep the audio moving while a line of Japanese text—and a translation in a chosen target language—appears over the same page.

The key distinction is capture scope. A workflow built for a particular hosted video or for an uploaded file needs access to that video or file. A browser extension that captures the active tab’s audio instead aims to work across different sites, including streams, videos, and browser-based lessons, without asking the viewer to download the media first. That is useful when the content is not available as a local file or when stopping to upload and process it would defeat the point.
This does not make every tab captionable in every browser state, nor does it establish a transcription accuracy rate. The project requirements are broader: capture audio from a tab, avoid file upload, display source and translated text, and keep the delay low enough not to interrupt live viewing. The available performance evidence is an author’s personal target, not a controlled test.

How does the captioning pipeline work?
The system has three parts: a browser extension that captures and presents captions, a stateless Worker that checks and routes requests, and a Durable Object that manages the ongoing session. Together, they turn continuous tab audio into ordered, short transcription and translation tasks.
1. The extension captures and segments tab audio
The extension uses browser tab-capture and offscreen-document patterns to access the audio playing in the tab. Rather than treating the whole stream as one recording, it uses voice-activity-detection-like chunking: speech is divided into segments, and silence is not uploaded. The extension then renders the resulting bilingual captions in a floating overlay.

Chunking matters for more than convenience. A long recording can take longer to transfer and process, and a late result is less useful during a live stream. Short segments let the system work incrementally. Silence filtering also avoids sending portions that contain no speech, though the available data does not specify a particular detector, chunk duration, or threshold.
2. The Worker handles request checks and routing
A stateless Worker authenticates incoming requests, checks plan limits, and routes each short audio or text segment. It is the request-handling layer rather than the owner of the continuing caption session. Separating those duties keeps the session-specific ordering and connection work in one place.
Authentication and plan checks are operational controls, not optional polish if a service is exposed to other people. Cloudflare’s AI-audio example uses Workers, Durable Objects, WebSockets, and Workers AI for browser audio pipelines, and explicitly warns that authentication, authorization, and resource controls must be added before public exposure.

3. A Durable Object owns each live session
One Durable Object per caption session owns the WebSocket and serializes speech-recognition and translation work so segments stay in order. It also tracks free-tier minutes, keeps a short rolling caption buffer for reconnects, and tears down the session when the user stops or the tab closes.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
That per-session state addresses a weakness of unrelated stateless requests: if several chunks are processed independently, a later result could arrive before an earlier one. A single session owner can preserve sequence and keep enough recent captions to recover from a temporary reconnect. The rolling buffer is short by design; the available data does not state its duration or that it is a complete transcript archive.
Using a Durable Object for usage accounting also avoids a shared-Redis race in the design described. That does not by itself define a billing policy or guarantee that a minute counter is correct under every failure mode. Limits, authentication, authorization, and cleanup still need explicit implementation and testing.
Which speech-recognition approach fits Japanese live captions?
There are two Cloudflare-related paths in the material: chunked Whisper transcription and a documented RealtimeKit mode powered by Deepgram Nova-3 on Workers AI. The right distinction is not simply which model name sounds best; it is whether the workflow needs incremental live updates or can wait for a batch result.
| Option | What the documentation describes | Useful distinction |
|---|---|---|
| Workers AI Whisper tutorial | Uses @cf/openai/whisper-large-v3-turbo, splits large audio into smaller chunks, transcribes each chunk, and aggregates the text. |
A chunk-and-aggregate transcription pattern; the tutorial does not establish Japanese stream accuracy or a latency guarantee. |
| RealtimeKit realtime mode | Powered by Deepgram Nova-3 on Workers AI; Japanese is listed as ja. |
Designed for realtime updates. Documentation recommends explicitly setting the spoken language and distinguishes interim live-caption updates from final updates for saved history. |
For Japanese, set the spoken language explicitly to ja when using the documented RealtimeKit mode rather than expecting the service to infer it reliably. Interim text is appropriate for a live overlay because it can arrive before a segment is final; final text is the better version to retain in history. Those are different update states, and an interface should not silently present an interim guess as an immutable transcript.

The available material does not provide a Japanese word-error rate, an accuracy percentage, or an independent latency study for either option. It therefore cannot support a claim that one approach is more accurate for Japanese streams, or that either will reliably produce a translation within a particular number of milliseconds. Model choice should be validated against the content and conditions the extension is meant to handle.
How should the overlay handle Japanese and translation?
Show the original Japanese and the target-language translation together, rather than replacing the source line. The original lets a viewer check what was recognized; the translation conveys the gist without requiring the viewer to leave the stream. A clear visual distinction between the two lines also helps users notice when an interim recognition changes before becoming final.
Translation direction should be an explicit setting: Japanese to Chinese or Japanese to English, for example. The available data specifies those as intended target options but does not establish a translation provider, a translation model, or a guaranteed language-pair quality level. It would be misleading to imply that speech recognition alone produces a reliable translation; the system needs a translation step after transcription, and the session should preserve ordering across both tasks.
History and settings are kept locally first in this project. That is a privacy-conscious default compared with making a remote transcript archive central to the workflow, but it is not a blanket claim that no data ever leaves the device: short speech segments are sent for processing. A useful design explains what is transmitted, what is retained locally, and what the server keeps for reconnects. The described server-side rolling caption buffer is for short reconnect recovery, not a stated long-term history store.
How much delay is acceptable for a live stream?
The author says that captions arriving around half a second after speech are, for them, the difference between a useful tool and a distraction. That is a personal latency target, not a benchmark, average, or promise. No Japanese-stream latency study or controlled measurement is reported.

Actual delay can include capturing and segmenting audio, transferring a chunk, recognizing speech, translating text, and returning and rendering the update. The design choices in the project aim to make that loop incremental: avoid uploading silence, use short segments, keep a WebSocket open for the session, and serialize work so results remain ordered. The available data does not give segment sizes, measured timings for these stages, or a service-level guarantee.
There is a trade-off in chunk size. Shorter chunks can give the interface an earlier opportunity to show text, but the text may be less complete or more likely to change before the final update. Larger chunks provide more context but can make the viewer wait longer. Since no optimal duration is established here, treat chunking as a tuning decision to test with representative speech, not as a fixed number supplied by the architecture.
How is this different from Cloudflare Stream Generated Captions?
Cloudflare’s Stream Generated Captions announcement on June 20, 2024 described a hosted-video workflow, not capture of arbitrary audio from whatever browser tab is playing. During beta, it supported English captions for on-demand videos and recordings of live streams under two hours, with captions generated in a few minutes.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteThat approach can suit a publisher processing a supported video asset when captions do not need to appear during playback. Tab capture addresses a different problem: a viewer wants captions while listening to audio already playing in a browser, including content not being submitted as a hosted video. The two workflows differ in capture scope, timing, and session state; the beta details should not be generalized into current availability or present-day product limits.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What are the privacy and operational pitfalls?
Capturing tab audio is not the same as keeping all processing local. In this architecture, speech chunks are sent to a backend for recognition and translation, while settings and history are local-first. Be clear with users about that distinction and avoid claiming that the raw audio never leaves the browser.

- What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
- Protect the endpoint. Require authentication and authorization, check plan limits, and add resource controls before exposing the service publicly. Cloudflare’s AI-audio example specifically cautions that its sample needs these controls before public deployment.
- Keep session accounting coherent. Assign each live session a Durable Object that can account for usage and serialize its work, rather than letting independent requests race to update shared usage state.
- Clean up abandoned sessions. Stop processing and release session resources when the user stops captions or closes the tab, as the project design specifies.
- Design for reconnects without overstating recovery. A short rolling caption buffer can help restore recent context after a connection interruption. It is not evidence of permanent transcript storage or recovery of every lost segment.
- Make uncertainty visible. Distinguish interim and final captions where the chosen recognition mode supports them. Do not treat a live interim result as a verified record.
What should you test before relying on captions?
There is no published accuracy or latency result here that can substitute for testing with the actual Japanese content a viewer follows. Evaluate the workflow with ordinary streams, fast dialogue, silence, and temporary connection interruptions, and judge both usefulness and failure recovery rather than only whether text appears once.
- Check capture scope. Confirm that the extension captures the intended tab’s audio and that the overlay appears over the content without requiring a downloaded video.
- Verify language and direction. Set Japanese as the spoken language where available, then confirm that the source text remains visible and that the selected translation target is the intended one.
- Watch interim-to-final behavior. Note whether provisional text changes, whether final text replaces it cleanly, and whether the saved history uses final updates when the recognition mode offers them.
- Observe order and recovery. Interrupt the connection in a controlled test and check whether recent captions return in sequence from the rolling buffer, while recognizing that it is short-lived recovery context.
- Review controls and cleanup. Verify authentication, plan-limit enforcement, usage accounting, and that stopping captions or closing the tab tears down the session.
Cloudflare’s Whisper tutorial describes splitting large audio into smaller chunks and aggregating their text, while a separate Cloudflare experiment documents a multipart Whisper endpoint with a 2 MB maximum upload and recommends client-side splitting for longer recordings. That 2 MB figure belongs to that experiment’s endpoint; it is not a universal upload limit for Workers or a general limit for every transcription path.

Can Cloudflare caption Japanese audio directly in real time?
Cloudflare RealtimeKit documents a realtime mode powered by Deepgram Nova-3 on Workers AI and lists Japanese as ja. Its documentation recommends explicitly setting the spoken language; that does not establish an accuracy percentage for Japanese streams.
Does Cloudflare Stream Generated Captions work on any browser tab?
No. The June 20, 2024 announcement describes captions for hosted on-demand videos and recordings of live streams, rather than arbitrary tab-audio capture. During beta, the stated workflow supported English and videos shorter than two hours, with captions generated in a few minutes.
What is the 2 MB Whisper upload limit?
A separate Cloudflare experiment documents a multipart Whisper endpoint with a 2 MB maximum upload and recommends splitting longer recordings on the client. That is an example-specific constraint, not a universal limit for Workers or all Workers AI audio requests.
