I built the tracker around a simple rule: a warehouse price is not a single number. Every observation keeps the provider, product, region, billing unit, pricing model and timestamp, then records storage, scans or processed data, commitments, free allowances and related services separately. That prevents a per-terabyte query charge from being compared with an hourly capacity charge as if they were the same meter.
The result is a comparable history of published rates and account costs, not a promise that one warehouse is always cheapest. BigQuery, Amazon Redshift and Azure Synapse expose different meters and configuration dependencies, so the tracker preserves those differences instead of hiding them behind one headline figure.
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
Why is cloud data warehouse pricing difficult to compare?
Cloud warehouses mix several billing dimensions. A query can be priced by bytes scanned, a provisioned cluster by running hour, a serverless pool by data processed, and storage by the amount retained over time. Region, edition, capacity, concurrency settings, reservations and attached services can change the result again.
A tracker that stores only a provider name and a monthly price loses the information needed to reproduce a comparison. I therefore treated each price as a time-stamped observation with explicit dimensions:

- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Provider and product: the service and edition being described.
- Region or location: the geographic price scope shown by the provider.
- Meter: query bytes, capacity time, storage, data processed, vCore-hour or another unit.
- Pricing model: on-demand, serverless, provisioned, reserved or another commitment state.
- Quantity and unit: for example, an hourly capacity rate or a price per amount of data scanned.
- Observation time: when the published value was collected, plus the source’s effective date when one is provided.
- Conditions: configuration, minimums, discounts, free allowances and related charges.
Keeping these fields separate makes a later comparison auditable. It also lets the tracker show that two rates are not directly comparable when their workload assumptions differ.
How did I design the price record?
I used a normalized record for the stable facts and retained the original source text for the conditions. Normalization makes filtering and change detection possible; the raw capture preserves context when a pricing page changes its wording or layout.

Rates remain decimal values with their units, not bare numbers. A value such as “5” is meaningless without saying whether it is dollars per capacity-hour, dollars per data scanned, or dollars per storage unit-month. I also keep the provider’s original currency rather than silently converting every observation into a moving exchange rate.
Why preserve the raw source?
Pricing pages often combine tables, footnotes and calculators. The raw capture lets me review a change that appears to be a price change but is actually a region selector, a new product stage or a revised definition of a meter. It also provides an audit trail when a normalized parser needs correction.
Which official sources feed the tracker?
I separate public price catalogs from account-cost interfaces. They answer different questions and cannot substitute for one another.
BigQuery pricing documentation
Google describes BigQuery compute, storage and other services as separate components. Its on-demand query model is based on the amount of data scanned, and the published rates are location-specific. Active storage and long-term storage receive different treatment. A BigQuery observation therefore needs at least the location, scan-based query meter and storage state; a single “price per terabyte” field is insufficient.

Amazon Redshift pricing documentation
AWS documents hourly on-demand capacity, reserved instances, pause and resume behavior, scan-based Spectrum charges and storage-related charges. The amount paid depends on the selected configuration and how it is used. I store the capacity state and reservation status alongside any scan or storage meter so a paused or reserved configuration is not compared with continuously running on-demand capacity.
Azure Synapse pricing documentation
Microsoft’s cost guidance identifies several distinct meters: dedicated SQL pool capacity and running hours, storage, serverless SQL by data processed, Spark by vCore-hour and integration services. Those components stay as separate records. Combining them into one “Synapse rate” would conceal whether a workload is paying for an always-on pool, serverless processing, Spark, integration or storage.
Catalog and billing interfaces
Google says its Cloud Billing APIs, including the Google Cloud Pricing API and Catalog API, are free of charge and points users to pricing tables and billing-export options. Those interfaces are useful inputs, but the documentation does not establish that they alone provide a complete historical, cross-provider warehouse price feed.
AWS Cost Explorer exposes account cost-management data through an API. AWS lists a charge of $0.01 per request when using a primary billing view and documents hourly granularity for certain features. That is actual account-cost data, not a complete public price catalog. I keep those streams separate so a negotiated rate or workload-specific bill does not overwrite the published list price.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteGoogle’s cloud price catalog links to service pricing and notes that prices are shown in U.S. dollars. It also cautions that product launch stage and local currency can affect interpretation. The tracker records those qualifiers rather than treating USD as a universal final charge.
What does a provider comparison look like?
The following matrix shows the dimensions I retain before attempting a matched-workload calculation. “Not stated” means the cited provider summary does not establish a comparable value for that field; it is not a zero price.

| Azure Synapse | Configuration- and service-dependent | Dedicated SQL pool capacity and running hours; Spark by vCore-hour | Storage charges | Serverless SQL by data processed | Not stated on the cited pricing summary | Not stated on the cited pricing summary | Integration-service meters |
This is a pricing-structure comparison, not a cheapest-provider ranking. A fair benchmark would need the same region, data volume, query pattern, concurrency, retention period, uptime and commitment assumptions for every option. The available material does not provide such a matched-workload result.
How can I collect prices automatically?
I organized collection as a pipeline with explicit stages. The implementation language and storage engine can vary; the important part is that each stage preserves provenance and units.
Recommended Free Tools
- Discover the source. Register the official pricing page, catalog endpoint or account-cost interface and record which components it covers. A catalog page and a billing API are different source types.
- Fetch a dated snapshot. Save the response or rendered table with retrieval time, region selections and any visible edition or configuration choices. Keep the original currency.
- Parse into atomic meters. Extract one record for each compute, query, storage, scan, processing or ancillary meter. Do not collapse multiple rows into a monthly total.
- Normalize units. Convert labels into a controlled vocabulary while retaining the provider’s wording. For example, “data scanned” and “data processed” remain distinct meters even if both are measured in data volume.
- Attach conditions. Store region, minimum duration, reservation state, free allowance, launch stage, configuration and footnotes with the rate.
- Validate. Reject records with missing currency, unit, region scope or effective time. Flag an unexpected unit or a large change for manual review rather than publishing it automatically.
- Version and compare. Hash the normalized record and compare it with the previous observation. A changed footnote, region or unit should be visible even when the numeric rate is unchanged.
- Publish and alert. Expose the current table and historical timeline separately. Alerts should identify the provider, meter, region, old value, new value and source capture so a reader can verify the change.
The source material does not establish a particular programming language, database, provider coverage list, polling cadence, retention period, alerting implementation or measured accuracy. Those are deployment choices, so I keep them configurable instead of presenting an invented stack as a tested result.
How should the tracker handle currency, regions and product changes?
Currency conversion is a presentation layer, not a replacement for the source amount. I store the original currency and, if a dashboard converts it, record the exchange-rate timestamp and method beside the converted value. Otherwise a currency movement can look like a provider price change.
Region names also need canonical mapping. A provider may use a location label that differs from a cloud account’s region identifier. The normalized record keeps both the provider label and the internal key, preventing two differently named locations from being merged accidentally.
Product launch stage belongs in the record. The Google Cloud catalog notes that launch stage can matter, so a preview or newly launched service should not silently replace a generally available product with the same display name. When a product is renamed or split, I close the old record and create a new version rather than rewriting history.

What does a cloud data warehouse actually cost?
The practical answer is the sum of workload-specific meters over time. Compute or query processing is only one part; storage retention, scanned or processed data, reservations, network or integration services and other ancillary charges can materially change the bill.
For a useful estimate, I define the workload first: data stored, ingestion volume, query scans or processed bytes, execution hours, concurrency, retention, region and expected uptime. I then map each quantity to the provider’s billing unit. A serverless workload with sporadic queries should not be modeled like a continuously running dedicated pool, and a reserved capacity plan should not be modeled at its on-demand hourly rate.
Published rates are conditional. They describe a region, configuration and pricing model at a particular time; they are not a universal monthly price. Account billing data can reveal negotiated terms and actual usage, but it should remain a separate series from public list prices.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How do I detect bad or misleading price changes?
Most false alarms come from metadata, not arithmetic. I check these cases before treating a difference as a real reduction or increase:
- A region selector changed between snapshots.
- A unit changed from capacity-hour to data processed, or from one data-size convention to another.
- A reservation, commitment or pause state was added or removed.
- A storage class changed from active to long-term.
- A provider introduced a new edition, launch stage or minimum duration.
- A footnote moved a charge into a related service.
- A currency display changed while the source amount stayed constant.
When a parser cannot establish that the old and new records describe the same meter, I mark the comparison as a schema change and retain both observations. A clean time series is less valuable than an honest one.
What should I verify before trusting a comparison?
- Every row has a provider, product, region or location scope, unit, currency and observation time.
- The workload quantities use the same definitions across providers.
- Storage, scans or processing, commitments and related services are included where relevant.
- Free allowances are documented rather than assumed to be zero or unlimited.
- Public list prices and account-cost data are displayed as separate series.
- Reservations, pause behavior and minimums are applied consistently.
- Currency conversions show their date and source.
- A reader can inspect the captured provider page or catalog entry behind each value.
This checklist is the safeguard against a dashboard that looks precise while comparing incompatible meters.

What are the limits of this build?
The design explains how to make warehouse prices comparable, but it does not establish a measured savings percentage, universal cheapest provider, polling frequency, historical completeness or parser accuracy. Those outcomes depend on the actual providers selected, source interfaces, deployment choices and validation period.
The defensible result is a transparent data model and collection process. By preserving units, regions, conditions and source times, the tracker can support a real cost decision without pretending that a single headline rate answers every workload.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can billing exports replace a public warehouse price catalog?
No. Billing exports describe charges generated by a particular account and its usage, including negotiated terms or credits. A public catalog describes published rates and conditions; keeping both lets you explain why an invoice differs from a list-price estimate.
How should I model reserved or committed capacity?
Create a separate pricing-model record with its term, eligible capacity and any upfront or recurring component. Do not overwrite the on-demand rate, because the two options have different break-even assumptions and cancellation risks.
What is the safest way to handle a provider changing its pricing page layout?
Keep the raw snapshot and parser version, then quarantine records whose unit, region or product identity no longer matches the previous schema. Resume automatic publication only after a human confirms the mapping.
Should converted prices be stored in one reporting currency?
Store the provider’s original amount first, then add a converted presentation value with the exchange-rate date and source. This preserves auditability when currency movements are larger than the underlying price change.
