Google Health Connect lets participating Android apps share supported health and fitness records through a common store on the device. Each app must request access to particular data types, and you decide whether to allow reading or writing; Health Connect does not automatically send every new record to every app. The apps manage when they check for updates, so sharing is not necessarily immediate.

What is Health Connect, and what does it do?

Health Connect is an Android intermediary: apps that implement its client/API can use a shared data store on your device rather than relying on every pair of apps to connect directly to one another. An app can read or write supported records only when the relevant permission has been granted. Android Developers describes this as permission requested “on a per-app basis.”

That makes Health Connect a common layer, not a universal data-sharing switch. Connecting an app to Health Connect does not mean that app can see every record on the phone, and installing two compatible apps does not by itself guarantee that they will exchange anything. Each app must support the relevant record types, request the access it needs, and perform its own read, write, and synchronization work.

The store is on-device. In practical terms, it is the shared point that participating apps use to read and write records; it is not simply a cloud account that pushes all of your data between services. A wearable, scale, or other source may supply data to an app, but the device is not a requirement for understanding or using the sharing model.

How does data move from one app to another?

A typical exchange has four stages: the app declares the record types it needs, asks Health Connect for permissions, receives your decision, and then reads or writes records through the API. Another app can use a record only if it also supports that type and has the necessary permission.

  1. The app specifies what it needs. Developers declare supported Health Connect data types and request the relevant read and/or write permissions. An app that handles sleep records, for example, does not thereby gain access to unrelated nutrition or activity records.
  2. You decide whether to grant access. Health Connect presents the app’s permission request. You can allow or deny the requested access; an app should check the current permission state rather than assume it still has access.
  3. An app writes or reads records. A source app may write records, while another app may read them. Health Connect supports operations such as inserting, updating, and deleting records.
  4. Each app updates its own view. The receiving app must check Health Connect and incorporate records into its own interface or service. The shared store makes access possible; it does not guarantee that every app will display the same data in the same way.

For example, if a compatible app writes a supported activity record and you have granted another app permission to read that data type, the second app may retrieve it from Health Connect. Whether it does so promptly depends on its synchronization behavior, not on an automatic broadcast from Health Connect.

Which data can apps share?

Health Connect supports record types across several areas of health and fitness. The official categories include activity, body measurements, cycle tracking, nutrition, sleep, vitals, wellness, and medical records.

Category What the category indicates What to check
Activity Activity-related records supported by Health Connect Whether each app supports the specific activity record you need
Body measurements Records for supported body measurements Whether the writing app and reading app both implement the relevant type
Cycle tracking Supported cycle-tracking records Which app requests access and whether it needs read access, write access, or both
Nutrition Supported nutrition records Whether records are being written and the receiving app checks for them
Sleep Supported sleep records Whether the apps handle the same record type and its time information
Vitals, wellness, and medical records Supported records in these categories Whether the particular app implements the record and has permission

The category names do not mean that every possible measurement or every app is supported. Health Connect’s record definitions specify details such as units, required fields, and whether a record represents an instantaneous value or an interval. Apps must implement the relevant record type and handle its structure. As a result, the same broad category can contain records that one app uses and another does not.

What do the permissions control?

Permissions are specific to the app and the data type. An app may request permission to read, write, or do both with particular records; granting access to one app does not automatically grant it to another. Users can deny a request or revoke access later, so apps are expected to check permissions when they need to use Health Connect.

Some access requires additional permission beyond the basic request for a data type:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Background reading: Reading while an app is not in the foreground has a separate permission requirement. An app should request it only if its use case needs background access.
  • Older records: Reading data older than 30 days requires a separate historical-read permission. This is a platform permission threshold, not a promise that every app imports a 30-day history by default.

These distinctions matter when an app appears to have access but does not show certain records. A foreground read permission does not, by itself, establish background access; permission for recent data does not establish historical access. The exact permissions available to an app depend on what it requests and what you grant.

Does Health Connect sync data automatically or in real time?

No. Health Connect does not notify every connected app whenever a new record arrives. Android Developers’ synchronization guidance says apps should check for data at appropriate times, such as when they become active, and may check periodically while in the foreground. Background access can be requested when needed, but it is separately permissioned.

This means there can be a delay between a record being written and another app showing it. The delay is controlled by the receiving app’s behavior, which may vary by app and by whether it is active. Health Connect provides the shared data and mechanisms to identify changes; the app is responsible for checking and updating its own view.

For developers, Health Connect supports change synchronization so an app can identify records inserted or deleted by other apps. The change mechanism uses tokens, and an unused Changes token expires within 30 days. Reads can also be interrupted, particularly during a large synchronization. Apps need to resume interrupted work and have a recovery strategy if a token expires, such as rereading from a known timestamp and deduplicating records. These are implementation details, but they explain why sync can be delayed or need recovery rather than being an instantaneous push.

How can I check or change access on my phone?

Use the Health Connect controls available on your Android device to review which apps have access and manage permissions. The location of Health Connect depends on Android version: Android 14 and later include it in system settings, while Android 13 and earlier use the Health Connect app available through Google Play.

  1. Open Health Connect from your device’s settings on Android 14 or later, or open the Health Connect app on Android 13 or earlier.
  2. Review the connected apps and the data permissions shown for the app you are troubleshooting.
  3. Check the specific data type and whether the app has the read or write access needed for the task.
  4. If the app needs to read while it is not open or needs records older than 30 days, check whether its request covers the separate background or historical-read permission.
  5. Change or revoke access from the Health Connect controls if you no longer want an app to use that data.

Menu labels can vary with the Android version and device. If you cannot find the Health Connect controls on a supported version, use the device’s settings search for “Health Connect” or locate the app on the device; Android 13 and earlier rely on the Play Store app rather than an integrated system-settings component.

What should I check when data is missing?

Missing data does not necessarily mean the record was lost. Work through the chain: a compatible app must write the record, Health Connect must have the relevant data type, and the receiving app must have permission and check for updates.

  • Confirm the source app wrote the record. A sensor or service supplying information to an app does not, by itself, prove that the app wrote that record to Health Connect.
  • Check the receiving app’s data-type permission. Access is granted per app and type. Permission to one category does not imply permission to another.
  • Allow for app-managed timing. Since apps are not automatically notified of new records, a receiving app may not update until it checks again.
  • Check whether the read is in the background. Background reading has a separate permission requirement, so behavior when the app is closed can differ from a check while it is open.
  • Consider the record’s age. Reading older data has a separate historical-read permission; an app without it may not retrieve older records.
  • Check app support, not just the broad category. Both apps need to handle the particular supported record type, and the record’s fields and time format need to fit their implementation.

These checks distinguish access problems from synchronization timing and from differences in what the apps implement. Health Connect can make a supported record available under the granted permissions, but it cannot force a receiving app to read, interpret, or display it.

Which Android devices can use Health Connect?

According to Android’s availability guidance, Health Connect requires a mobile device running Android 9 (API level 28) or higher and Google Play services. Android 14 and later include Health Connect as part of Android and expose it in Settings. Android 13 and earlier use the separate Play Store app. The Android Developers guide also says API use is not supported in work profiles.

Compatibility with Health Connect does not mean every app is compatible. The app must implement its API, request access to the relevant record types, and support the operations it needs. Nor does compatibility guarantee that every record will be synchronized at the same time; the synchronization behavior remains app-managed.

What is Health Connect’s own tracking feature?

Health Connect also supports on-device tracking for steps, distance, and active calories. This is separate from records that a wearable or an app writes into the store: the on-device tracking capability starts tracking a data type only when an app requests and receives read permission for that type. Users can turn this tracking off in settings.

That distinction is useful when checking the origin of a value. A record may come from an app or connected device writing to Health Connect, or it may relate to Health Connect’s own supported on-device tracking. The relevant app permissions and record details help determine which path applies; do not assume that enabling Health Connect automatically turns on all tracking.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can a health app change data just because it can read it?

Read and write access are distinct permissions. An app that has permission to read a data type should not be assumed to have permission to create, update, or delete that type.

Will every app show the same version of a health record?

Not necessarily. Apps implement record types and fields differently, so two apps can handle the same broad category without presenting identical information or displays.

Does Health Connect work in an Android work profile?

Android Developers’ availability guidance says Health Connect API use is not supported in work profiles. That is a platform limitation, separate from whether an app supports Health Connect on a personal Android profile.
