Google AI Overviews are associated with fewer clicks on traditional organic results, while clicks on the overview’s cited links are uncommon. In Pew Research Center’s analysis of browsing by 900 U.S. adults in March 2025, people clicked a conventional result in 8% of visits when an overview appeared, compared with 15% when it did not. Only 1% of visits with an overview included a click on a link inside the summary.
Those figures are observations from one country, month and browser panel—not a traffic-loss forecast for every website. Google reports a different, aggregate view: its Search chief said total organic click volume to websites was relatively stable year over year and that average click quality increased. The two accounts measure different things, so publishers need query-level measurement rather than one universal percentage.

What do Google AI Overviews do to website clicks?
When an AI Overview answers a query directly on the results page, users appear less likely to continue to a standard blue-link result. They also often finish the browsing session on that page. The effect is strongest as an observed change in behavior on searches that actually displayed an overview; it should not be applied to every impression, ranking or country.

The 8% versus 15% result is a difference in the share of visits containing a click, not a claim that every site loses 47% of its traffic. A query’s intent, device, country, brand familiarity, ranking position and page quality can all change the outcome.

Do people click links in Google AI Overviews?
Some do, but the available panel evidence shows that source-link clicks are rare. A citation can therefore increase a site’s visibility in the answer without producing a measurable referral session.
Why a citation is not the same as a visit
- A citation is a link displayed as evidence or a source in the generated answer.
- A citation impression records exposure, not a click, engaged session or conversion.
- A click on a cited page may be counted differently from a normal organic result in analytics, depending on Google’s interface and the browser.
- The cited domain may not be one of the links shown in the conventional first-page results.
A longitudinal crawler study illustrates the last point. Xu, Iqbal and Montgomery examined 55,393 trending queries across 19 categories during a 40-day period from March 13 to April 21, 2026. Their generated overviews sometimes cited domains that were absent from the co-displayed first page. That makes citation counts and ranking reports different datasets, even when they refer to the same query.

A citation can send traffic, but current evidence does not support treating citation as a dependable traffic channel. In Pew’s March 2025 panel, only about 1% of visits to pages with summaries included a click on a summary link. The rate describes those observed visits, not a guaranteed click-through rate for a particular publisher.
What a citation can still accomplish
- Expose a brand or specialist source to a searcher who might not have noticed it in the standard results.
- Associate a page with a specific claim, even if the user does not visit immediately.
- Provide a later path to the site when a user needs detail, evidence or a transaction.
Those outcomes are awareness or assisted-visit possibilities, not proof of direct referral value. Report citation appearances separately from clicks, sessions and conversions.
How strong is the evidence that overviews reduce clicks?
The evidence is consistent in direction but differs in design, population and question. Comparing the numbers as though they shared one denominator would produce a misleading forecast.

Pew Research Center’s browser-panel analysis
Pew’s July 22, 2025 report analyzed browsing activity from 900 U.S. adults during March 2025. It compared Google visits with and without an AI summary. Traditional-result clicks were less common when a summary appeared, summary-link clicks were uncommon, and session-ending visits were more frequent. Because this was an observed panel in one month, it does not establish the same rates for other countries, devices, publishers or later interfaces.

The 2026 paper using the same panel
A paper by Athena Chapekis, Anna Lieb, Sono Shah and Aaron Smith, posted on arXiv on August 5, 2026, revisited the March 2025 data. It reported the same headline pattern and found that the associations remained statistically significant after controls for query attributes and participant-level effects. The paper estimated that 18% of Google searches in the observed month produced an AI Overview. That percentage is a property of that panel and month, not a current global activation rate.
Google’s aggregate position
On August 6, 2025, Liz Reid, Google’s vice president and head of Search, wrote: “Overall, total organic click volume from Google Search to websites has been relatively stable year-over-year.” Google also said average click quality had increased, defining a quality click as a visit in which the user does not quickly return to Search.
Google’s statement aggregates Search traffic across its ecosystem. Pew compares user behavior on pages with and without summaries. Stable total traffic can coexist with fewer clicks on overview-triggering queries if other queries, users or click types offset that change. Neither statement independently describes every publisher’s results.
Longitudinal crawler evidence
The 2026 study by Haofei Xu, Umar Iqbal and Jacob M. Montgomery sent 55,393 trending queries in 19 categories over 40 days. It found that activation varied substantially by category and wording. It also checked whether cited pages supported claims in generated answers and found unsupported claims in its sample. This was a crawler and claim-verification study, not a measurement of user clicks or publisher sessions.

Field-experiment evidence
An abstract by Saharsh Agarwal and Ananya Sen, posted on SSRN on April 3, 2026 and revised July 8, reported that, conditional on an overview appearing, “AIOs reduce outbound organic clicks by 39.8% and increase zero-click searches by 34.5%, without affecting sponsored clicks or overall search frequency.” Because the complete paper and methods were not available with the abstract, treat those figures as preliminary abstract findings rather than a universal causal estimate.
Vendor keyword analysis
Ahrefs analyzed 300,000 keywords in April 2025 and reported a 34.5% lower average click-through rate for pages ranking first on informational keywords with an overview than for its comparison group without one. This is an observational comparison by a commercial SEO provider. It does not randomize overview exposure and should not be used as the expected loss for every number-one result.
Why do the percentages vary so much?
Each study answers a different measurement question. Before applying a number, check five dimensions.
- Outcome: Is it a traditional-result click, a cited-link click, a session ending, an impression, a CTR or a “quality click”?
- Design: Was the result observed in a browser panel, generated by a crawler, compared across keywords or estimated in an experiment?
- Scope: What country, device, query category, date range and interface were included?
- Comparison: Is the baseline an otherwise similar query without an overview, a before-and-after period or a different keyword group?
- Attribution: Is the claim from independent researchers, Google itself or a vendor?
For example, the Pew 8% and 15% rates describe visits by U.S. panel participants. Ahrefs’ 34.5% figure describes an average CTR difference among keyword groups. The field-experiment abstract’s 39.8% figure is conditional on an overview appearing. They cannot be averaged or ranked as competing estimates of one global effect.

It proves that Google displayed a link to the page as a source for that particular generated response. It does not prove that users clicked, that the page ranked organically for the same query, or that every sentence in the overview is supported by that page.
Claim support can be incomplete
In the 2026 longitudinal study’s sample, some generated claims were not fully supported by the cited pages. That finding depends on the study’s queries and verification procedure; it is not a universal error rate. Publishers should avoid assuming that citation presence validates all wording attributed to them.

Different source pools create reporting gaps
Because a cited domain may be absent from the visible first-page results, a normal rank tracker may not explain every citation. Conversely, a page can rank well and never be cited for a particular generated answer. Treat ranking, citation appearance and referral traffic as separate fields in reporting.

Use a segmented baseline instead of applying a headline percentage to total traffic. The goal is to identify where an overview appeared, what changed, and whether the change affected valuable outcomes.
- Build a query set. Export your important queries and group them by intent, country, device and landing page. Keep brand, product, informational and local queries separate.
- Record exposure over time. For each query and date range, note impressions, clicks, CTR, average position and conversions. Mark whether an overview was observed; do not infer its presence from a ranking change alone.
- Separate result types. Keep conventional organic clicks, overview citation clicks, paid clicks and direct or returning visits in different columns.
- Use matched comparisons. Compare similar queries with and without an observed overview, or compare the same query across periods while documenting changes in wording, device and results layout.
- Check quality, not only volume. Examine engaged sessions, assisted conversions and return-to-search behavior where your analytics setup can measure them. A smaller number of more purposeful visits may have a different business value.
- Annotate interface changes. Record dates when Google changes the overview layout, citation design or eligibility. A sudden break in the series may be a product change rather than a content change.
What should SEO teams do when clicks fall?
First determine whether the decline is concentrated in overview-triggering queries. Then improve the page for the visitor’s next task rather than trying to force a citation that no source can guarantee.
Prioritize pages where a click matters
- Protect navigational and transactional pages whose value depends on a completed action.
- Make key facts, definitions, prices, dates and eligibility conditions easy to verify on the page.
- Use clear headings and supporting evidence so a visitor who does click can reach a decision quickly.
- Track conversions and qualified sessions by query group, not only sitewide CTR.
Do not treat citation chasing as a ranking guarantee
There is no evidence here that a particular markup change guarantees inclusion in an overview or a citation click. A technically sound, crawlable page remains necessary, but citation selection is query- and interface-dependent. Avoid rewriting accurate content merely to match a generated answer you cannot verify.
What are the main limitations and failure modes?
- Overgeneralizing a panel: U.S. March 2025 behavior is not a worldwide or permanent rate.
- Confusing association with causation: Observational overview-versus-no-overview comparisons can reflect differences in query intent.
- Mixing denominators: A percentage of visits, searches, keywords or cited claims describes a different population.
- Counting visibility as traffic: Impressions and citations do not equal sessions.
- Ignoring query activation: An overview effect applies only when an overview actually appears.
- Reading aggregate traffic as query proof: Google’s stable year-over-year total does not rule out declines in specific query segments.
- Assuming citation accuracy: A cited page may not support every generated statement, as shown in the crawler study’s sample.
What is the practical bottom line for website owners?
Plan for a redistribution of search behavior, not a single guaranteed traffic-loss percentage. On overview-triggering searches, independent panel evidence shows fewer traditional-result clicks, more sessions ending on Google, and very few clicks on cited links. Google’s aggregate account indicates that total organic traffic and click quality can remain broadly stable across the wider Search ecosystem.
The defensible response is measurement: segment queries by observed overview exposure, keep citation clicks distinct from standard organic clicks, and judge changes by qualified visits and conversions. A citation may help a page be seen, but current evidence does not justify treating it as reliable referral traffic.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can a website be cited in an AI Overview without ranking on page one?
Yes. The 2026 longitudinal crawler study found cases in which cited domains were not among the co-displayed first-page organic results. Citation selection and conventional ranking should therefore be monitored as related but separate visibility signals.
Does Google Search Console show every AI Overview citation click separately?
The evidence summarized here does not establish a universal, separately reported citation-click field in Search Console. Use the reporting fields available in your property and validate referral patterns with analytics rather than assuming that every citation impression is a Search click.
Will structured data guarantee that Google cites my page?
