Esports organizations make money from sponsorships and advertising, league distributions, prize winnings, transfers, merchandise, licensing and creator content. Sponsorship is usually the most important stream, but it can disappear faster than salaries, league fees and production costs. A large audience or a profitable tournament does not prove that a team has durable margins or enough cash to meet its obligations. Public filings illustrate the gap: NIP Group’s esports-team gross margin fell from 17.1% in 2024 to 6.8% in 2025, while GameSquare’s auditor warned of substantial doubt about the consolidated company’s ability to continue as a going concern. Those warnings are financial-risk signals, not evidence that either organization or a named team filed for bankruptcy.
How do esports teams make money?
An esports team sells access to a fan audience, competitive participation and branded intellectual property. The exact mix depends on the game, league contract, geography and the organization’s ability to turn players and content into commercial inventory. The main channels are:

The World Intellectual Property Organization describes sponsorship and advertising as the sector’s most important revenue source and sponsorship as the primary source for team organizations. Its overview also identifies media, merchandise, licensing, streaming and tournament-related income as complementary channels: WIPO’s esports stakeholder business-model guide.
Why sponsorship is usually the foundation
A sponsor can buy several forms of exposure at once: a logo on a jersey, naming rights, player appearances, social-media posts, livestream segments and access to fan events. That bundle can be worth more than selling a jersey one customer at a time, which is why sponsorship often funds payroll and operating overhead before the organization has meaningful commerce scale.

The concentration creates a vulnerability. Riot Games’ John Needham, identified as its President of Publishing & Esports, said on March 14, 2024: “We all – leagues and teams alike – are overly reliant on sponsorship as a revenue stream.” The statement appears in Riot’s discussion of its esports strategy: Riot Games’ March 2024 strategy announcement. It is a description of pressure in that ecosystem, not a universal percentage that applies to every team.
Is a tournament prize pool the same as team profit?
No. A prize pool is a conditional receipt, while profit is what remains after the organization’s share of the award and all related costs. Qualification, placement and the size of the award can vary from event to event.

The filing demonstrates why a headline prize cannot be treated as the organization’s net income: FaZe’s 2023 Form 10-Q. A team may also owe coaching bonuses, travel, boot-camp expenses, entry fees and production costs around the event. Unless a contract is public, the split between the organization and its players is not knowable from the tournament announcement alone.
Player transfers and licensing have the same accounting issue in reverse. A transfer fee can create a large one-time receipt, but it is not dependable operating income. A club that repeatedly sells players may also be weakening its competitive roster, potentially reducing future sponsorship value.
How do league and publisher deals affect team revenue?
Publishers control the game’s intellectual property and often control, or heavily influence, the league’s media, ticketing, sponsorship and digital-item rights. A team receives only the amounts its contract entitles it to; it does not automatically own every dollar earned around a broadcast or event.
Riot’s March 2024 description of its then-current League of Legends partnership model said teams were expected to commit approximately $10 million to participate and receive 50% of certain league revenues. Riot also outlined a proposed arrangement for the LCK, LCS and LEC involving a fixed stipend and sharing from digital content. Those were dated, title- and league-specific terms, not a 2026 entry price or a rule for all esports. The details and proposed changes are in Riot’s announcement.

What do recent public figures reveal about esports margins?
NIP Group’s fiscal-2025 filing provides a rare detailed schedule for one organization’s esports-team segment. The figures below are the group’s reported gross revenue-recognition lines, not an industry average and not the whole company’s revenue.
| Line item | 2023 | 2024 | 2025 |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sponsorship and advertising | $8,147,298 | $3,860,800 | $847,073 |
| Esports-team operations | $21,664,621 | $14,725,503 | $11,818,097 |
| Team-segment gross margin | Not stated in the cited schedule | 17.1% | 6.8% |
The operations line includes tournament participation, transfers, merchandise, sponsorship and other activities. The filing separately shows a surcharge-tax adjustment; management’s discussion reports corresponding rounded net team-segment revenue of $14.7 million for 2024 and $11.8 million for 2025. Those rounded net figures should not be mixed with the gross schedule above, and neither describes NIP Group’s entire business. The filing is available at NIP Group’s 2025 Form 20-F.
The sponsorship line dropped from $8.15 million in 2023 to $0.85 million in 2025, while team-segment gross margin fell by 10.3 percentage points from 17.1% to 6.8%. Gross margin is measured before many company-level expenses; it does not establish positive net income. The example shows how a sponsor contraction can overwhelm growth in merchandise, transfers or other activities.
Why can an organization with a large audience still face bankruptcy risk?
The danger is a timing and margin mismatch: payroll, coaching, facilities, travel, league commitments and production bills recur, while sponsorship renewals, tournament awards, transfers and publisher distributions can be delayed, reduced or lost.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFixed costs arrive before uncertain receipts
Player and staff contracts commonly require payment through a season even when results disappoint. A roster built for a league’s minimum salary or a championship push can therefore remain expensive after sponsor income falls. Cutting costs may also hurt performance, making renewal negotiations harder.
League seats and rights can require capital
A participation commitment such as the approximately $10 million figure Riot described for its then-current League of Legends model ties up capital before a team knows how much sponsor or digital-item revenue it will receive. If the publisher changes the format, distribution formula or eligibility rules, the organization may not be able to recover that investment quickly.

Revenue concentration magnifies one lost contract
When one sponsor or a small group of sponsors supplies most commercial receipts, a nonrenewal can create an immediate hole. Merchandise and content may grow but still carry production, platform and talent costs, so their gross sales cannot be substituted dollar-for-dollar for a lost sponsorship.
Cash flow is different from accounting profit
An organization can report revenue while waiting months for payment, or show a noncash impairment without an equal cash outflow. Liquidity depends on cash on hand, receivables, debt maturities and access to new financing—not on audience size or a single income-statement line.
What do NIP Group’s losses and impairments actually mean?
NIP Group reported $15.686 million in consolidated net cash used in operating activities in 2025. That figure covers the entire group, which also operated talent management, event production and Bitcoin mining; it is not the esports-team segment’s cash burn.
The same filing reported $122.5 million of goodwill impairment and $64.4 million of intangible-asset impairment in 2025, primarily associated with the NIP brand and league seat. Both are noncash accounting charges. The group’s reported $238.1 million net loss therefore cannot be described as a $238.1 million esports-team operating loss or as a cash deficit of that amount. These distinctions matter when assessing whether a team needs financing immediately or whether an accounting write-down reflects a lower valuation of acquired assets.
Does a going-concern warning mean a team is bankrupt?
No. A going-concern paragraph means an auditor sees conditions that raise substantial doubt about the consolidated company’s ability to continue operating without obtaining financing, improving results or restructuring obligations. Bankruptcy is a legal filing or court process, and the two should not be conflated.
GameSquare’s fiscal-2025 filing reported recurring losses, current liabilities exceeding current assets and an auditor’s substantial doubt about the consolidated company’s going-concern ability. The filing includes FaZe Esports among its brands, but the audit is of GameSquare as a whole, not a standalone audit of a FaZe team. It is evidence of financial stress, not proof that GameSquare or FaZe filed for bankruptcy. See GameSquare’s fiscal-2025 Form 10-K.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
Readers should also be cautious with working-capital figures in that filing: one passage describes a $24.7 million deficiency while a management note describes $18.7 million at December 31, 2025. The inconsistency is a reason to read the full notes rather than quote one number as definitive.
Can audience growth make the model safe?
Audience growth helps only when it converts into contracts, distributions or sales with acceptable margins. Riot reported that average-minute audience grew 58% for MSI and 65% for Worlds in 2023, while also describing business pressure. Those figures show reach, not team profitability: Riot’s 2024 audience and strategy discussion.
Conversion depends on who owns the inventory. A publisher may sell the broadcast sponsorship, an organizer may keep ticket receipts and a platform may retain subscription or advertising revenue. A team benefits only through its own sponsor contracts, league distribution formula, creator agreements or merchandise margin.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How should you compare the financial health of esports organizations?
Exact team-level numbers are often private. When they are unavailable, compare the structure of the business rather than ranking organizations by follower count.
- Map sponsor concentration: identify whether one renewal controls a large share of receipts and whether contracts are annual, multi-year or cancellable.
- Separate guaranteed and performance-based income: list fixed league stipends or distributions apart from prizes, bonuses and transfer fees.
- Check digital-rights access: determine whether the team receives a contractual share of in-game items or whether the publisher and league retain those sales.
- Measure recurring commitments: include player and staff payroll, facilities, travel, production, league fees and debt service.
- Read cash-flow and liquidity notes: look for operating cash use, receivables, current liabilities, debt maturities and financing plans.
- Strip out parent-company noise: remove unrelated divisions, acquisition accounting and noncash impairments before drawing conclusions about the team.
- Ask what happens after a poor season: a resilient organization can reduce costs without breaching contracts or losing its league position.
This framework prevents a common mistake: treating a team’s social reach, prize headline or parent-company revenue as proof of sustainable operating economics.
What could make the model less fragile?
Durability comes from several modest, repeatable streams rather than one spectacular event. Organizations can seek multi-year sponsor contracts, retain a meaningful share of digital-item sales, build merchandise with controlled inventory, and structure creator agreements that pay for content without committing to an oversized roster. League distributions that are fixed or formula-based are easier to budget than uncertain prizes.

None of these measures removes publisher dependence. A title can lose players, a league can change its schedule or a platform can alter monetization. The practical goal is to keep fixed costs below conservative recurring receipts and maintain enough liquidity to absorb a missed renewal or a season without prize income.
What is the clearest answer to the bankruptcy-risk question?
Esports teams can generate real revenue and still be financially fragile because their most important income—sponsorship and some league-related receipts—is contract-dependent, while payroll and participation costs are recurring. Prize money, transfers and merchandise add upside but are not dependable substitutes for a diversified, high-margin base. NIP Group’s falling sponsorship receipts and margins, together with the separate going-concern warning at consolidated GameSquare, show why readers must distinguish revenue, profit, cash flow, impairment and legal bankruptcy before drawing a conclusion about any team.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do esports teams keep all the money from their jerseys and merchandise?
No. Gross merchandise sales may be reduced by manufacturing, shipping, platform fees, returns, licensing payments and player or creator revenue shares. Public filings rarely disclose a uniform net margin, so a sales total cannot be converted into team profit without the contract and cost details.
Who owns the revenue from an esports broadcast?
Ownership depends on the publisher, league and event agreement. A league or organizer may sell the broadcast and sponsorship rights first, with the team receiving a distribution only if the contract provides one; the team does not automatically receive the event’s entire media or ticket revenue.
What financial documents should fans read for a public esports parent?
Start with the annual filing, auditor’s report, cash-flow statement, liquidity note and segment disclosures. Look for recurring operating cash use, debt due within a year, sponsor or league concentration, and whether reported losses are driven by noncash impairments.
Can a team be profitable for a season and still fail later?
Yes. A one-time transfer, prize or asset sale can produce a profitable period without creating recurring cash. If the next season brings lower sponsorship, a large league payment or an overdue debt, the organization may need financing despite the earlier profit.
