You can automate many appliances without opening their cases by putting an ESP32 beside the appliance and imitating the control method a person already uses. An ESP32 running ESPHome can replay infrared (IR) commands, send compatible sub-GHz radio-frequency (RF) commands, or operate a correctly rated smart plug. Home Assistant then schedules those actions and exposes them to automations. The appliance stays physically unchanged; only its remote, radio receiver, or mains connection is operated from outside.
IR is the most reusable approach for televisions, air conditioners, fans, audio equipment, and other products with handheld remotes. RF works when you know the remote’s frequency and modulation. A smart plug is simplest for reversible on/off control, but electrical power is not proof of the appliance’s internal state. The right method depends on compatibility, feedback, placement, and how the appliance behaves after a missed command or power interruption.

What does an external ESP32 appliance bridge actually do?
The bridge is a low-voltage controller that sits outside the appliance. ESPHome runs on the ESP32, provides Wi-Fi connectivity and signal-timing components, and Home Assistant communicates with it through ESPHome’s native API. In practice, Home Assistant tells the ESP32 to transmit a learned command, while the appliance receives that command exactly as it would from its original remote.
Nothing inside the appliance is rewired. The boundary is important: the ESP32 handles logic and signaling, and a certified plug product handles any mains switching. This keeps the appliance enclosure closed and makes the automation removable.

The three control paths
| Method | What the ESP32 operates | Best use | Main limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Infrared (IR) | An IR LED aimed at the appliance’s receiver | Remote-controlled consumer electronics and HVAC equipment | Requires line of sight and can be state-uncertain |
| Sub-GHz RF | An RF transmitter (and, when needed, receiver) using a compatible protocol | Wireless outlets or appliances with matching radio remotes | Frequency and modulation must match; range and antenna position matter |
| Smart plug | The appliance’s mains connection | Simple power cycling or scheduled on/off operation | Only useful when cutting power is safe and acceptable; power draw does not reveal operating mode |
ESPHome’s remote_transmitter component supports common remote signals, including infrared and 433 MHz RF, and timing-capable ESP32 variants are generally the better choice for precise transmission. Home Assistant can call the ESP32’s learned IR or RF actions as part of scenes, schedules, or conditional automations.
How do I automate an IR appliance without opening it?
Use a receiver to learn the original remote’s signals, then use an IR LED to replay them from the ESP32. The only physical requirement at the appliance is a clear optical path to its IR sensor.
1. Choose and wire the low-voltage parts
- ESP32 development board supported by ESPHome.
- IR receiver module for learning commands.
- IR LED transmitter circuit, with the appropriate resistor and driver arrangement for the board and LED.
- Stable low-voltage USB power and Wi-Fi coverage where the appliance is located.
Keep the receiver and transmitter electrically on the low-voltage side. Do not connect ESP32 GPIO pins directly to mains wiring.
2. Configure a receiver that dumps codes
Create an ESPHome device for the board and add a remote_receiver component on the GPIO used by the IR receiver. Enable code dumping or logging. The purpose of this stage is observation: when you press a button on the original remote, ESPHome reports a decoded protocol when it recognizes one and can also expose raw pulse timings when it does not.
Capture every command you intend to automate, including power, mode, temperature, fan speed, input selection, and any distinct “off” command. Some air-conditioner remotes transmit the complete desired state in one long packet rather than a simple toggle; record that entire packet instead of assuming that a short power code is sufficient.

3. Learn commands methodically
- Place the receiver where it can see the original remote’s front LED.
- Open the ESPHome logs and press one remote button at a time.
- Record the protocol and code shown in the logs. If decoding fails, save the raw timing output.
- Repeat a button press to check that the same command is captured consistently.
- Label each capture with the appliance function and, for stateful remotes, the complete state it represents.
Do not assume that two buttons with the same visible label send the same data. A “power” button may be a toggle, while a separate “on” or “off” command may be absolute. Learning both directions, when available, prevents an automation from flipping the appliance into the opposite state after a missed transmission.

Connect the IR LED transmitter to a suitable ESP32 output and configure ESPHome’s remote_transmitter. Add the decoded protocol or raw timing sequence obtained in the previous step. Test one command at a time while watching the appliance, then expose each working transmission to Home Assistant as an action or button.
Transmission power, LED angle, and distance affect reliability. A short test from a few centimetres is not proof that the placement will work across a room. Mount the LED so its emitting surface points toward the appliance’s IR window, and avoid hiding it behind opaque furniture.
5. Place the bridge within line of sight
Infrared is optical. Home Assistant’s infrared guidance requires the adapter to be within line of sight of the controlled device. Reflections can occasionally help, but design for a direct path rather than relying on a wall or cabinet. If several appliances are in the same room, aim the LED carefully or use separate emitters so a command cannot reach the wrong receiver.
How does Home Assistant fit into the ESPHome setup?
ESPHome handles the ESP32’s radio and precise signal timing; Home Assistant provides the user interface, schedules, and higher-level decisions. Once the ESPHome device is connected through the native API, Home Assistant can invoke the learned transmission from a dashboard, script, scene, or automation.

What belongs on each side?
- ESP32 and ESPHome: GPIO assignments, IR/RF receiving and transmitting, timing, Wi-Fi connection, and local device actions.
- Home Assistant: schedules, occupancy or sensor conditions, dashboards, scripts, and coordination with other devices.
- The appliance: its original firmware and physical controls remain untouched.
Keep the transmission action explicit. A script named “Set fan to low” is safer than one named “Toggle fan,” because a repeated automation or delayed retry can otherwise reverse the intended state.
When is RF better than infrared?
RF is preferable when the appliance or outlet already uses a compatible sub-GHz remote and line of sight is inconvenient. The ESP32 must transmit the same frequency and modulation family as the original device; a generic 433 MHz transmitter is not automatically compatible with every 433 MHz product.
Learning and transmitting RF
- Identify the original remote’s operating band and obtain a suitable RF receiver and transmitter path.
- Configure ESPHome’s RF proxy components and capture a button press.
- Check whether ESPHome decodes a protocol or reports raw timings.
- Replay the capture at short range, then test from the intended installation position.
- Repeat the test after moving or rotating the antenna, because orientation affects range.
RF can pass through some obstacles, but range is not guaranteed. Metal cabinets, reinforced walls, electrical noise, and poor antenna orientation can all reduce reliability. If the original remote uses rolling codes or an otherwise proprietary exchange, a raw replay may not work; the appliance’s exact protocol must be tested rather than inferred from the carrier frequency alone.
Is a smart plug a safe way to automate an appliance?
A correctly rated, certified smart plug is the least invasive option for simple mains control. It can turn an appliance on or off without any connection to the appliance’s electronics and may report electrical consumption. Treat the plug as a separate electrical product: match local voltage, the plug’s current rating, and the load type, and follow the manufacturer’s installation and certification requirements.

When a plug is appropriate
- The appliance safely resumes operation when power returns, or it is acceptable for it to remain off until a person starts it.
- Only whole-device on/off control is needed.
- The appliance’s inrush current and continuous load are within the plug’s specified limits.
- The plug can remain accessible enough to disconnect in an emergency.
Why plug power is not appliance state
A metering plug reports electrical behavior, not the appliance’s internal mode. A television can be in standby while drawing a small amount of power, a heater can cycle its element while remaining “on,” and an appliance can be powered but paused. Use the plug’s measurement as supporting evidence, not as a definitive state sensor, unless the appliance’s behavior has been characterized and the automation tolerates uncertainty.

How should I choose between IR, RF, and a plug?
Start with the control the appliance already accepts, then decide whether you need a confirmed state or only a command.
| Question | IR | RF | Smart plug |
|---|---|---|---|
| Does the appliance have a matching remote? | Required IR remote | Required compatible RF remote | Not required |
| Does it provide direct feedback? | Usually no; commands may be stateless | Usually no unless a compatible receiver reports state | Reports electrical behavior, not internal mode |
| Placement requirement | Direct line of sight | Suitable range and antenna orientation | Within Wi-Fi range and safe mains placement |
| What it can control | Individual remote functions | Individual compatible radio functions | Whole-device power |
| Recovery concern | Missed or duplicated command can leave the wrong mode | Frequency, interference, or replay incompatibility | Power restoration may not produce the desired appliance state |
Choose IR when you need the same functions as the handheld remote. Choose RF when the existing radio control is compatible and line of sight is impractical. Choose a plug when reversible power control is enough and the appliance is designed to tolerate the resulting power behavior.
How do I make automations resilient to missed commands?
Design for uncertainty instead of assuming that every transmission was received. IR and RF commands can be one-way, and a network outage can prevent Home Assistant from issuing them at the scheduled time.
- Prefer absolute commands such as “set mode to cool” or “turn on,” when the appliance offers them, over toggles.
- Add deliberate delays between commands when the appliance needs time to process a mode change.
- Avoid rapid retries that could apply a toggle twice.
- Expose a physical or dashboard fallback so a person can recover control.
- After ESP32, Home Assistant, or appliance power restoration, verify the appliance’s actual behavior before enabling automatic retries.
- Test the automation with Wi-Fi unavailable, the ESP32 rebooting, and the appliance already in a different mode.
For a plug, decide explicitly what should happen after power returns: remain off, turn on, or wait for a person. That behavior is appliance-specific and should be validated with the actual model.

The appliance does not react to IR
- Move the LED into direct line of sight and check that it points at the appliance’s IR window.
- Confirm that the transmitter is connected to the GPIO configured in ESPHome.
- Replay the exact learned protocol or raw timing, including carrier and timing details captured by the receiver.
- Test at close range first, then increase distance gradually.
Only some RF commands work
- Verify the frequency and modulation, not just a label such as “433 MHz.”
- Relearn the command with the receiver closer to the original remote.
- Change antenna orientation and retest from the final location.
- Check whether the remote uses a rolling or proprietary code that cannot be replayed as a static capture.
The automation reverses the appliance state
This usually indicates a toggle command being sent without reliable state feedback. Replace it with an absolute command if the appliance supports one, or add a separate state-verification method and a manual recovery action.

The plug reports power but the appliance is not doing the expected job
Power consumption alone cannot distinguish standby, paused, heating, cooling, or a completed cycle. Use the appliance’s own indicators or an independent sensor when the distinction matters, and do not treat a wattage threshold as universal.
What are the electrical and security boundaries?
Keep the ESP32, receiver, and transmitter at low voltage. All mains switching should remain inside a properly enclosed, certified plug product rated for the local supply and the appliance’s load. Do not open an appliance or route mains conductors to a development board merely to gain more control; that changes the safety problem and defeats the purpose of an external bridge.

A networked remote is still a control surface: an exposed or poorly secured installation can issue commands without anyone standing near the appliance.
What should I test before relying on the automation?
- Confirm that every intended command works repeatedly from the final mounting position.
- Test the appliance when it is already on, already off, and in a different mode.
- Disconnect Wi-Fi briefly and observe whether the appliance remains safe and controllable manually.
- Restart the ESP32 and Home Assistant, then check for unintended transmissions.
- Remove and restore power through the smart plug, if used, and document the appliance’s restart behavior.
- Leave a clearly labeled manual control available for occupants and maintenance.
Exact support is appliance-specific. Successful learning of one button does not guarantee that every function, state transition, or recovery scenario will work, so keep the original remote and the plug’s physical switch available.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can an ESP32 control an appliance if I lose internet access?
Internet access is not inherently required for a local ESPHome and Home Assistant installation, but the local network, Home Assistant host, and ESP32 must remain powered and reachable. Test your specific setup with the internet disconnected; a cloud-dependent dashboard or remote-access path may stop working even while local automations continue.
Can one ESP32 control several IR appliances in the same room?
Yes, provided each appliance has a correctly aimed emitter path or the transmitters are arranged so signals cannot trigger the wrong device. Give each learned command a clear device and function name, then test for cross-control from the actual mounting position.

Keep it. It provides a manual fallback, helps you relearn a command if the ESPHome configuration is lost, and lets you compare appliance behavior when an automation appears to have failed.
Will a smart plug let me start an appliance automatically after a power cut?
Only if that appliance is designed to resume the desired operation when mains power returns. Many products remain off or enter standby, so verify the exact model’s recovery behavior before treating a plug restoration as a start command.
