How eSIM and carrier activation work on the new iPhone

On a new iPhone, an eSIM replaces the removable SIM card with a digital SIM profile built into the phone. The iPhone supplies the hardware and setup screens, but your carrier controls whether the number can be transferred by Quick Transfer, assigned automatically, installed from a QR code, activated through an app or link, or entered manually.

For the smoothest move from another iPhone, use eSIM Quick Transfer during setup: both phones need the same Apple Account, Bluetooth, the old phone’s passcode and iOS 18.4 or later. The old SIM is deactivated when the new plan activates, so make a test call before erasing or trading in the old phone.

What is an iPhone eSIM, and who controls its activation?

An eSIM is an industry-standard digital SIM built into the iPhone, eliminating the need for a physical SIM card. It stores the carrier plan electronically; it does not replace the carrier account, phone number or network subscription.

Apple lists eSIM-capable hardware beginning with the iPhone XS, iPhone XS Max and iPhone XR, and continuing with later models. That does not mean every later iPhone has the same eSIM behavior. Carrier support, the exact model, the country where it was sold and the region where it is being used can change which activation paths appear.

The iPhone can show an Add eSIM or Set Up Cellular control even when a carrier does not support every method. Treat the carrier as the deciding party: it must provision the plan and may require an account check, QR code, activation link, app or manual details.

Apple’s iPhone User Guide describes the practical requirement this way: an iPhone needs a SIM to connect to a cellular network, and an eSIM is the digital SIM built into the device.

Which eSIM activation method applies to my iPhone?

The right method depends mainly on whether you have a nearby iPhone, an Android phone, a carrier-issued QR code or a carrier account that supports self-service activation. This comparison shows what each route needs.

Method Source device Carrier involvement Credential or approval When it is used
eSIM Quick Transfer Nearby old iPhone Carrier must support transfer Same Apple Account, old-phone passcode and a verification code or confirmation During setup or later in Settings
Carrier Activation None required Carrier assigns the plan “Carrier Cellular Plan Ready to Be Installed” notification When the phone is purchased or after the carrier completes the sale
QR code None required Carrier supplies the QR code Printed or displayed QR code, followed by Add eSIM prompts During setup or after setup
Carrier link or app None, or an old phone when the app supports transfer Carrier must provide a supported link or app workflow Activation link or carrier-app account sign-in Usually after opening the link or app
Manual entry None required Carrier supplies the required values SM-DP+ address and activation information supplied by the carrier After setup through Add eSIM
Android or other non-Apple phone Android or another non-Apple phone Carrier contact is normally required Carrier Activation or a new QR code When moving a number from a non-Apple device

How do I transfer my eSIM to my new iPhone?

Use eSIM Quick Transfer when your carrier supports it and the old phone is an iPhone. The transfer can happen while the new iPhone is being set up or afterward from Cellular settings.

Prepare both iPhones

  • Sign in to both phones with the same Apple Account.
  • Unlock the old iPhone with its device passcode.
  • Keep the phones close together and turn on Bluetooth.
  • Install iOS 18.4 or later on the phones used for Quick Transfer.
  • Connect the new iPhone to Wi-Fi or a hotspot. A locally sold eSIM-only model may be able to activate without Wi-Fi, but Wi-Fi is the safer assumption.

Transfer during initial setup

  1. Turn on the new iPhone and proceed through setup until cellular service is offered.
  2. Choose the option to transfer the number from a nearby iPhone.
  3. Confirm the transfer on the old iPhone, or enter the verification code shown on the new iPhone when prompted.
  4. Wait for the new plan to show as active, then place a call.

Transfer after setup

  1. Open Settings > Cellular > Set Up Cellular or Settings > Cellular > Add eSIM.
  2. Choose Transfer From Nearby iPhone.
  3. Approve the request on the old phone or enter the displayed verification code.
  4. Wait for activation and test a call before removing the old phone from service.

Successful activation on the new iPhone deactivates the previous SIM. Do not erase, reset or trade in the old phone until the new iPhone can place a call and connect to cellular data. If the transfer prompt never appears, the carrier may not support Quick Transfer even though both iPhones have eSIM hardware.

How do I activate a new iPhone without a SIM card?

A carrier can provision the eSIM directly, so no physical SIM card is needed. This is called eSIM Carrier Activation.

  1. Complete the purchase or carrier account process for the new iPhone.
  2. Watch for a notification titled Carrier Cellular Plan Ready to Be Installed.
  3. Tap the notification and continue through the Settings screens.
  4. Allow the plan to install, then place a call to verify service.

If the notification does not arrive, or the test call fails, contact the carrier. The carrier may need to associate the device with the account, correct an activation record or issue a different installation method.

How do I set up an eSIM with a QR code?

Use the QR code supplied by the carrier when Quick Transfer and automatic Carrier Activation are unavailable or when the carrier specifically directs you to use it.

During iPhone setup

  1. At the cellular setup screen, choose Use QR Code.
  2. Point the iPhone’s camera at the carrier’s QR code.
  3. Follow the Add eSIM or Add Cellular Plan prompts.
  4. Wait for the plan to activate and test a call.

After setup

  1. Open the Camera app and scan the carrier QR code.
  2. Tap the notification that appears, then choose Add eSIM or Add Cellular Plan.
  3. Complete the carrier prompts and verify cellular service.

On iOS 17.4 or later, a QR code received in the default email app or browser can be pressed and held to add the eSIM instead of being scanned from another screen. A carrier can invalidate or replace a QR code, so ask for a new one if the code has already been used or the installation fails.

How do carrier links and carrier apps activate an eSIM?

Some providers deliver activation through a web link or their own app rather than a QR code. The carrier still provisions the plan; the link or app simply starts the approved installation flow.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Activation link

  1. Tap the activation link supplied by the carrier.
  2. Approve the Activate New eSIM prompt.
  3. Continue in Settings until the cellular plan is installed.
  4. Place a call and check cellular data.

Carrier app

  1. Install the carrier’s official app if the provider supports in-app eSIM activation or transfer.
  2. Sign in to the account that owns the line.
  3. Choose the eSIM activation or transfer option shown by the app.
  4. Accept the iPhone’s installation prompts and verify service.

App and link availability is provider-specific. If the app only offers a physical-SIM workflow, request Carrier Activation or a QR code instead of repeatedly retrying the same screen.

How do I enter eSIM details manually?

Manual entry is a fallback for carriers that provide the required provisioning values directly.

Do not substitute values from another carrier or another line. If manual activation is rejected, the carrier must confirm the correct details or issue a QR code; the iPhone cannot generate missing provisioning credentials.

Can I transfer an eSIM from Android to iPhone?

The dependable route is to contact the carrier and request eSIM Carrier Activation or a QR code for the new iPhone. Direct Android-to-iPhone transfer is not universal.

With iOS 26 or later, Apple says some carriers and selected smartphone makers support direct transfer between Android and iPhone. Eligibility depends on both the carrier and the specific Android manufacturer and model. If no transfer option appears, use the carrier’s QR-code or activation workflow rather than deleting the Android eSIM first.

Why do model and region change eSIM support?

Apple’s general eSIM instructions cannot override regional hardware and regulatory differences. A model sold in one market may have a different SIM configuration from a similarly named model sold elsewhere.

China mainland

Apple’s cited support information says that in China mainland, eSIM support is limited to iPhone 18 Pro, iPhone 18 Pro Max, iPhone 17e and iPhone Air. A different iPhone generation or a phone imported from another market may not qualify under that region’s rules.

Hong Kong and Macao

Hong Kong and Macao include iPhone models with two nano-SIM cards. That physical-SIM configuration does not imply that every model sold there offers the same eSIM functions as an iPhone sold elsewhere.

What to check before activation

  • Read the model number and sales region in the phone’s device information.
  • Confirm that the carrier supports eSIM for that exact model and country.
  • Ask which method the carrier supports: Quick Transfer, Carrier Activation, QR code, link, app or manual entry.
  • Check the iOS version required by the method you intend to use.

What should I do when an iPhone eSIM will not activate?

Most failures come from an unsupported carrier method, missing transfer prerequisites or a regional model mismatch. Work through the branch that matches the symptom.

The nearby-iPhone transfer option is missing

  • Check that both phones use the same Apple Account.
  • Unlock the old phone and confirm its passcode is available.
  • Turn on Bluetooth and move the phones close together.
  • Update to iOS 18.4 or later.
  • Ask the carrier whether Quick Transfer is supported for the line and region.

If any requirement fails, request Carrier Activation or a QR code from the carrier.

The carrier notification never appears

Confirm that the carrier has completed the order and associated the new iPhone with the correct account. If the notification still does not arrive, the carrier must reissue the activation or provide another method.

The QR code does not work

Use the Camera app or, on iOS 17.4 or later, press and hold a QR code shown in the default email app or browser. If the code was already installed, expired or generated for a different device, ask the carrier for a replacement.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The phone shows a plan but calls fail

Restarting may refresh registration, but a failed test call after installation is a carrier-side problem until proven otherwise. Contact the carrier and keep the old phone available if the account needs to be re-provisioned.

There is no Wi-Fi during transfer

Connect the new iPhone to Wi-Fi or a hotspot before starting. Only some locally sold eSIM-only models may activate without Wi-Fi, so do not assume cellular setup can proceed offline.

What happens to the old SIM and the old phone?

When the new eSIM activates successfully, Apple says the previous SIM is deactivated. The old phone may still display the line or stored eSIM profile, but it should no longer provide cellular service for that number.

Make a call from the new iPhone, test mobile data away from Wi-Fi and confirm that important two-factor messages arrive before erasing the old phone. If the test fails, leave the old device untouched and ask the carrier to restore or reissue the line.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can one iPhone hold multiple eSIM lines?

Yes. iOS and the iPhone model determine how many profiles can be stored and how many can be active at once, while the carrier determines which lines can be provisioned. Label lines in Cellular settings so you can select the correct number for calls, messages and data.

Apple also says iOS 26 or later can transfer more than one phone number to a new iPhone when the carrier supports that capability. A carrier may still require separate verification for each line.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many eSIM profiles can an iPhone manage?

Apple Support says an iPhone can manage up to eight or more eSIMs. The number that can be active simultaneously is lower on some models and depends on the carrier configuration.

Can iOS 26 move several phone numbers to one new iPhone?

Yes, Apple says iOS 26 or later can transfer more than one number when the carrier supports multi-number transfer. If the option is absent, the carrier may require each line to be activated separately.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can a selected Android phone transfer directly to an iPhone?

Sometimes. Apple describes direct Android-to-iPhone transfer as available with some carriers and selected smartphone makers, not as a universal Android feature. A carrier-issued QR code or Carrier Activation remains the fallback.
