The responsible way to check a book manuscript for AI-generated text is to review its policy, provenance, and passages in context—not to treat a detector score as a verdict. Preserve the submitted file, establish what the relevant publisher or platform permits, examine available drafts and version history with the author’s cooperation, and ask about specific concerns before drawing conclusions. A detector may be one limited review aid, but it cannot prove who wrote a passage or certify a book as human-authored.
What can an AI detector tell you about a book manuscript?
An AI detector estimates whether eligible text resembles patterns its model associates with AI-generated writing. It does not observe how a person wrote, and a score is not proof of authorship. A low score does not establish that a manuscript is human-written; a high score does not establish that AI created it.

That distinction matters when an editor is deciding whether an author complied with a contract, when a self-publishing author is preparing a disclosure, or when someone wants to make a claim about human authorship. These are different questions, governed by different rules and evidence. Start by defining the decision you need to make, then identify the applicable policy before considering a scan.
The Authors Guild’s professional guidance to publishers, dated October 13, 2026, says: “No publisher, agent, or other person should rely solely on an AI detector to determine if a book contains AI text.” Its recommendation is to discuss concerns with the author rather than treat a detector result as an accusation. Read the Authors Guild guidance.

Why scores can mislead
False positives can flag human writing; false negatives can miss AI-generated writing. The Authors Guild’s 2026 comparison illustrates how sharply outputs can differ: it ran five detectors on ten articles published in 2022 or earlier. In that small sample of deliberately human-authored material, Sidekicker.ai flagged all ten as 71%–100% AI-written; Pangram reported zero across the ten; Originality.ai reported zero on eight and 1% on two. This is evidence of false flags on those particular articles, not a balanced accuracy benchmark for AI-written book prose and not proof that one detector is best.
OpenAI’s historical evaluation is similarly easy to misread. On its English challenge set, the company reported that its classifier labeled 26% of AI text as likely AI-written and incorrectly labeled 9% of human text as AI-written. OpenAI discontinued that classifier on July 20, 2023, citing low accuracy. Those figures describe a retired tool and its evaluation—not current accuracy for other detectors or any present-day product. OpenAI’s archived classifier announcement explains the withdrawal.

What should you check before scanning a manuscript?
Before a detector enters the process, confirm what you are trying to establish and what the manuscript’s handling rules permit. This prevents a tool score from answering the wrong question and reduces the risk of exposing unpublished work unnecessarily.
Identify the applicable policy
Read the author agreement, publisher’s AI policy, or platform rule that applies to the manuscript. Policies are not universal. For example, the University of Chicago Press’s guidelines, revised October 21, 2026, prohibit authors from using AI for core writing or rewriting and require disclosure of generative-AI assistance to an acquisitions editor. Amazon Kindle Direct Publishing (KDP) uses its own distinction between AI-generated and AI-assisted content. Neither rule should be treated as the standard for every publisher or author.
Make the question specific: Is the concern a possible breach of a signed agreement, a required KDP disclosure, a request to substantiate a claim about human authorship, or an editorial concern about a particular passage? The answer determines what evidence matters. A detector result cannot settle a contract interpretation, a disclosure category, or a copyright question by itself.
Protect the unpublished text
A book manuscript may be confidential, commercially valuable, or not yet protected by the safeguards an author expects. Before sending it to a third-party service, establish whether the author or rights-holder has authorized the upload and review the service’s terms for retention, access, and use of submitted text, including any training use. The Authors Guild specifically raises permission, retention, and training as concerns when publishers consider third-party detectors.

If those terms are unclear, do not upload the manuscript. You can still assess policy compliance through document history, dated drafts, editorial correspondence, and a direct conversation—subject to the author’s agreement and the publisher’s procedures. A potential detector result is not worth creating an avoidable confidentiality or data-use problem.
Preserve the submitted version and gather context
Keep an unchanged copy of the submitted manuscript before reviewing it. If the author agrees and the document is in Google Docs, earlier versions and recorded changes can be reviewed by someone with editing permission. Google’s documentation explains how to view earlier versions of a file.
Version history is evidence of document changes, not universal proof of who originated every sentence. Likewise, the absence of a particular platform’s history is not evidence that a person used AI. If appropriate, ask the author for relevant dated drafts or editorial correspondence, and record what those materials do and do not establish.
How do you review a manuscript fairly, step by step?
Use a documented sequence that moves from policy and context to passage-level questions. A scan, if appropriate, belongs late in the process and should inform—not replace—the review.
- Define the decision. Write down whether you are checking a particular policy, preparing a platform disclosure, investigating a passage, or evaluating a human-authorship claim. Do not treat one purpose as interchangeable with another.
- Read the relevant rule. Identify the author agreement, publisher policy, or platform guidance in force. Note what it classifies as AI-generated, AI-assisted, or disallowed, and what disclosure it requires.
- Preserve the original. Save an unchanged copy of the submitted file and record its date and version. Do not overwrite it while investigating.
- Review available provenance with permission. Examine relevant drafts, document history, and editorial correspondence if the author agrees. Distinguish what the records show from what they cannot prove.
- Read the manuscript in context. Mark substantial passages that raise a craft or factual question. Check them against surrounding chapters, the author’s disclosures, and any relevant source material; do not treat a stylistic impression as a diagnostic test.
- Decide whether a detector is necessary and permitted. Check the tool’s scope and data terms first. If the manuscript cannot be uploaded safely or the tool cannot handle the relevant text, do not scan it.
- Document the limits of any result. Record the tool and report date, eligible word count, language, file type, and the exact passage submitted. Preserve the report and explain that it is an estimate, not proof.
- Ask the author about the specific concern. Share the passage and the applicable rule, invite an explanation, and consider the drafts and disclosures together before deciding what action is warranted.
What passages deserve closer editorial review?
Review passages that raise a concrete craft, continuity, or fact-checking concern—not passages that merely “sound like AI.” Abrupt shifts in voice or continuity in fiction, and unsupported quotations, citations, or claims in nonfiction can justify editorial questions. They are prompts for review, not validated stylistic fingerprints of AI authorship.
For fiction
Compare a passage that feels out of character or inconsistent with the surrounding narrative against the book’s established voice, point of view, timeline, and details. Ask whether the author can explain the choice or supply a relevant draft. A change in style can have ordinary editorial or creative causes; by itself, it does not identify how the text was produced.

Human editing references can help resolve craft issues without pretending to detect AI. The Chicago Guide to Copyediting Fiction is a reference for fiction copyediting, not an authorship detector. The physical Chicago Manual of Style, 18th Edition includes expanded coverage of fiction and AI-related editorial topics; it is likewise an editing reference, not a certification tool.
For nonfiction
Verify unsupported quotations, citations, and factual claims against their purported original sources. A fabricated or inaccurate citation is an editorial and fact-checking issue whether it came from AI, faulty memory, or another process. The Chicago Guide to Fact-Checking, Second Edition is more directly suited to checking nonfiction claims than a detector is.

Not without checking its eligible text, input limits, and treatment of the manuscript’s format. A long book may exceed a service’s documented range, and some forms of writing are not reliably assessed. A whole-book score can also obscure which passages were actually analyzed.
Turnitin’s AI Writing Report documentation provides a concrete example of tool-specific limits. It specifies 300–30,000 words of qualifying long-form prose per report and accepts .docx, .pdf, .txt, and .rtf files under 100 MB. It says poetry, scripts, code, and some unconventional text are not reliably detected. These limits describe Turnitin, not all services, and its education-oriented workflow may not be available to an individual book author. See Turnitin’s AI Writing Report documentation.
If a manuscript is longer than a tool’s limit, do not imply that a partial scan represents the entire book. Record exactly which passage or eligible text was processed. Genre, language, file type, word count, and the model or report date all affect what a result can reasonably mean.
Turnitin-specific details that affect interpretation
- Turnitin’s English model changed on October 14, 2026; earlier reports are not updated retroactively.
- The service suppresses numeric results below 20% to reduce false-positive misinterpretation. A suppressed result is not a zero score or proof of human authorship.
- Turnitin distinguishes its AI percentage from its similarity score. They represent different assessments and should not be conflated.
- The company warns that false positives—human-written text incorrectly flagged as AI-generated—are possible.
These points apply to the Turnitin report described in its documentation, not to detectors generally. Another service may use different thresholds, eligible text rules, model versions, or report formats.

How should you interpret a flagged passage?
Treat a flag as a reason to ask a focused question, not as a finding of misconduct. Compare the flagged text with the author’s drafts and disclosures and with the policy you are applying. Then give the author an opportunity to explain the passage before deciding whether the evidence supports any conclusion.
Human writing can be flagged for reasons unrelated to AI authorship. The Authors Guild warns that second-language writing, plain prose, and genre-conventional language can be especially vulnerable to mistaken flags. Grammarly likewise describes its score as an estimate rather than a definitive assessment and notes that another provider may produce a different score. A disagreement between scores is not a reliable way to resolve authorship.
Keep the record precise: identify the passage, the tool and report date if used, the applicable rule, the author’s explanation, the relevant drafts, and what remains uncertain. If the concern is unresolved, describe it as unresolved rather than turning a score into a public accusation. The decision should follow the applicable agreement or policy and the evidence considered—not a detector’s percentage alone.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How do KDP, publisher rules, and copyright treat AI use?
Disclosure and authorship are related but separate questions. KDP’s disclosure categories are not universal publisher rules, and neither a platform disclosure nor a detector score determines copyright status.
KDP’s generated-versus-assisted distinction
KDP requires publishers to disclose AI-generated text, images, or translations. Under its stated rule, content actually created by AI remains AI-generated even after substantial editing. If a person created the content and used AI to edit, refine, or check it, KDP calls that AI-assisted and says disclosure is not required. Because platform policies can change, check the current KDP AI-content guidance when preparing a publication.
Publisher policies can set different requirements
A publisher can set its own terms for authors. The University of Chicago Press’s guidelines, revised October 21, 2026, prohibit AI use for core writing or rewriting and require authors to disclose generative-AI assistance to an acquisitions editor. That is the Press’s stated policy, not a rule that automatically applies to other publishers. The contract and policy governing a particular book control the editorial question.

US copyright registration is not a detector test
The US Copyright Office’s March 2023 guidance distinguishes copyrightable human contributions from AI-generated material. It directs applicants to describe human authorship and exclude AI-generated content that is more than de minimis. The guidance does not provide a detector-based shortcut for deciding who authored a passage. This is general information, not case-specific legal advice. Read the Copyright Office’s AI registration guidance.
Certification is a separate attestation
The Authors Guild’s Human Authored certification is an attestation-based program, not an independent scan of a manuscript. Its FAQ describes a de minimis allowance and says substantial AI rewriting is ineligible under its criteria. Those certification criteria are not the same as KDP’s disclosure categories, so a mark should not be presented as a detector result or as a universal publishing standard.
How do you choose whether a detector is appropriate?
There is no universal accuracy ranking that can answer whether a service is appropriate for a specific book. Assess the tool against the manuscript, the decision, and the privacy terms rather than treating its score as a general measure of truth.
- Genre and language: Does the service say that it evaluates this kind of prose and language?
- Input limits: What file types, word counts, and document sizes are eligible, and what text is excluded?
- Relevant error evidence: Is there evidence about false positives and false negatives on text comparable to the manuscript? A small test on older articles does not establish performance on an entire book.
- Reviewability: Can you see which passages contributed to a flag, or does the service provide only an aggregate result?
- Model currency: What model or report date applies, and are existing reports updated when the model changes?
- Access and cost: Is the service actually available to the intended user, and are its current terms clear? Do not assume an education-oriented workflow is available to individual authors.
- Manuscript handling: What are the service’s retention, access, and training terms, and has the author or rights-holder agreed to the upload?
If important information about scope or data handling is unavailable, that is a reason not to use the service on an unpublished book. A scan is optional; careful policy review, provenance checks, factual verification, and a fair conversation remain possible without one.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can an AI detector identify which sentences in a book came from ChatGPT?
A detector report may identify passages it considers likely AI-generated, but that does not establish that a named system produced them. The report is an estimate based on the tool’s model, not a record of the writing process.
Can I check a manuscript without uploading it to a detector?
Yes. You can review the applicable policy, compare dated drafts and available document history with the author’s permission, and fact-check passages that raise specific concerns. Those steps do not prove authorship, but they avoid sending unpublished text to an outside service.
Recommended Free Tools
Does an AI detector score affect a book’s copyright registration?
The US Copyright Office’s guidance focuses on identifying human-authored contributions and excluding AI-generated material that is more than de minimis; it does not prescribe detector scores as evidence. Questions about a particular registration may require qualified legal advice.
Does the Authors Guild Human Authored mark mean a book passed an AI scan?
No. The program describes an attestation-based certification, not an independent scan. Its eligibility criteria are distinct from platform disclosure rules such as KDP’s.
