How do you secure an AI agent that uses third-party tools?

Secure an AI agent by limiting what it can reach, treating every external instruction and tool response as untrusted data, and enforcing authorization in application code rather than in the model. Use reviewed and version-pinned integrations, isolated execution, short-lived credentials, action-specific human approval, and continuous logging and abuse testing. Prompt filters can reduce exposure, but they cannot remove the underlying risk: an agent processes instructions and data in a shared context.

What can go wrong when an AI agent uses third-party tools?

The agent may receive attacker-controlled instructions through a web page, document, email, API response, memory record, or the output of an otherwise legitimate tool. This is an indirect prompt injection: a normal user supplies content that silently changes what the model tries to do. If the agent has broad permissions, the injected request can become a real-world action such as reading confidential records, sending a message, changing access, or deleting data.

A third-party integration creates a second problem: the tool itself is a supply-chain boundary. Its description, schema, annotations, update, or runtime response can contain misleading instructions. A server that was acceptable when reviewed can become unsafe after its definition or publisher changes. OWASP describes the architectural root cause plainly: “The architectural root cause, instructions, and data sharing the same input stream cannot be patched away.” OWASP’s prompt-injection glossary explains why sanitization alone is not a complete defense.

Your design goal is therefore not to make the model perfectly distinguish every instruction from every piece of data. It is to make a mistaken or manipulated model decision have limited effect, and to require trusted code and, where appropriate, a person before consequential effects occur.

How do I define a narrow permission profile for each agent?

Start with the task, not with the tools a platform happens to offer. For one agent role, write down the exact data, resources, operations, and destinations it needs. Remove everything else. OWASP’s AI Agent Security Cheat Sheet identifies privilege minimization as the most effective way to reduce prompt-injection impact.

Map the task to capabilities

  1. Describe the job in one sentence. For example, “summarize support tickets” does not require sending email, changing billing records, or running arbitrary shell commands.
  2. List resources separately. Specify which project, mailbox, database tables, folders, or records are in scope. “Read the CRM” is broader than “read customer-status fields for the assigned account.”
  3. Choose the least powerful operation. Prefer read-only endpoints, previews, drafts, and single-record updates over bulk writes or unrestricted query interfaces.
  4. Separate roles. A research agent, a support agent, and a deployment agent should not share one identity or token. Give each a distinct policy and credential.

Use scoped, temporary identities

Use narrow OAuth scopes and resource-level permissions, with separate credentials for separate servers. Prefer short-lived tokens that expire automatically and can be revoked without affecting unrelated systems. Do not place a broad administrator token in an agent context merely because one rare workflow might need it; route that exceptional operation through a separately protected service.

Permission choice Safer default Why it matters
Data access Specific records or fields Limits disclosure if retrieval is manipulated.
Operation Read, preview, or draft A mistaken call cannot immediately create an external effect.
Identity Separate per-role, short-lived credential Prevents one compromised agent from inheriting another role’s authority.
Network reach Required destinations only Reduces exfiltration and lateral movement paths.

How should I vet third-party tools and MCP servers?

Maintain an explicit allowlist rather than allowing the model or an external document to install or discover integrations dynamically. The OWASP MCP Security Cheat Sheet recommends treating servers as supply-chain dependencies and reviewing them continuously.

Review provenance and the complete definition

  • Record the server’s source, publisher, maintainer, intended data access, and contact for security changes.
  • Inspect every tool name, description, annotation, input schema, output schema, and declared permission. A harmless-sounding description can conceal a request to upload secrets or weaken a control.
  • Pin the reviewed release, commit, package digest, or other verifiable version identifier. Store the exact definition that was approved.
  • Require a new security review and, where relevant, user consent when a definition, schema, permission, or publisher changes.
  • Block installation or activation triggered by untrusted content. A page, document, or tool response may suggest an integration, but it must not authorize one.

Approval is not permanent trust. Monitor changes and runtime behavior, and be prepared to disable an integration quickly. OWASP’s MCP Tool Poisoning guidance covers malicious instructions hidden in tool metadata and responses.

How do I stop untrusted content and tool output from controlling the agent?

Mark external content, retrieved text, memory, and tool returns as data in your internal protocol and user interface. Keep trusted system policy separate from those values, use structured responses with fixed schemas where practical, and reject malformed output. These measures improve clarity, but they are not a security boundary by themselves: the model can still be persuaded by text that looks like an instruction.

Validate every follow-on action

Never let a tool response directly invoke another privileged tool. If a search result says “call the admin API with this token,” the result is merely a string. The next call must go through the same policy checks as any other proposal: authenticated actor, target resource, operation, normalized parameters, and required approval. Keep high-privilege tools in a separate execution service or context that external content cannot reach simply by returning an instruction.

Prefer typed fields such as customer_id or ticket_status over free-form command text. Enforce length, character, range, and allowlist constraints, and reject unexpected fields or scopes. Log validation failures as security events without storing the sensitive payload unnecessarily.

Where should authorization happen?

Authorization belongs in deterministic application or service code at every tool boundary. The model’s tool choice is a proposal, not a permission decision. The OWASP LLM Prompt Injection Prevention Cheat Sheet and the AI Agent guidance both emphasize enforcing policy outside the language model.

Checks to perform before execution

  1. Authenticate the calling user, service, and session.
  2. Confirm that the selected tool and server are on the approved allowlist and at the reviewed version.
  3. Resolve the target resource and operation from trusted identifiers, not from unvalidated prose.
  4. Normalize parameters, apply strict schemas, and reject unknown fields, excessive quantities, and out-of-scope destinations.
  5. Evaluate the actor’s current permission, the agent role, rate limits, and any data-loss policy.
  6. Verify that an approval is required or present for this exact action, then execute with the minimum credential.

Fail closed when the tool is unknown, a policy service is unavailable, an approval cannot be verified, or the definition hash does not match the reviewed version. Do not substitute a model-generated explanation for a missing policy result.

How do I isolate code execution, credentials, and network access?

Run shell, browser, code-execution, and file-manipulation capabilities in restricted containers or ephemeral workspaces. Give the runtime a low-privilege identity, deny access to host secrets and sensitive directories, and permit network egress only to required endpoints. Apply CPU, memory, disk, process-count, and wall-clock limits so a malicious loop or recursive tool chain cannot consume the host.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Keep production credentials out of general-purpose agent environments. A CI agent should not receive deployment keys or production secrets unless the specific job requires them; even then, inject a narrowly scoped, short-lived credential for the shortest feasible duration. Separate the service that decides whether an action is allowed from the sandbox that performs untrusted computation. This limits the damage if code execution or a dependency is compromised. OWASP’s Secure Coding with AI Cheat Sheet provides related isolation and secret-handling practices.

When should a human approve an agent action?

Require explicit, action-specific confirmation before an agent sends an external message, makes a payment, deletes or bulk-edits records, changes privileges, or deploys to production. The confirmation screen should show the exact tool, target, parameters, affected quantity, and destination—not a vague statement that the agent wants to “continue.”

Make approval resistant to replay

  • Bind the approval to the authenticated actor, exact normalized parameters, and one action identifier.
  • Expire it quickly and mark it single-use; a changed target or amount requires a new approval.
  • Re-check authorization immediately before execution, because permissions or records may have changed.
  • Fail closed if the approval service, policy lookup, or identity check is unavailable.
  • Keep the model’s proposal separate from the executor’s decision and record who approved what.

For low-impact read operations, an approval step may add little value. For irreversible, financial, administrative, or publicly visible actions, the friction is justified because it caps the consequences of a successful injection.

What should I log, limit, and test?

Use structured audit records that let an investigator reconstruct a decision without collecting a second copy of every secret. Record the tool and server identity, reviewed version, authenticated actor, resource and operation, authorization result, approval reference, timing, and outcome. Exclude credentials and redact unnecessary prompt, output, and argument content.

Set operational ceilings

  • Maximum calls per minute and per task.
  • Maximum retries, chain depth, and concurrent executions.
  • Token, wall-clock, CPU, memory, storage, and monetary-cost ceilings.
  • Circuit breakers for repeated authorization failures, unusual destinations, or rapid bulk actions.

Maintain repeatable adversarial tests

Test direct and indirect prompt override, poisoned tool descriptions, malicious tool responses, privilege escalation, memory poisoning, data exfiltration, recursive tool use, and malformed parameters. Re-run the suite after material changes to prompts, tools, retrieval sources, memory, policies, or model providers. A filter that passes today is not evidence that a changed integration will remain safe.

How should I compare possible agent-security architectures?

There is no universally safest vendor or product. Compare designs against the same control axes and choose the smallest authority that satisfies the workflow.

Axis Lower-risk design Higher-risk design
Authority scope Read-only, resource-specific, single-task role Broad write access shared across roles
Trust isolation Privileged execution service separated from retrieved content One context can directly reach every tool
Approval strength Exact action, parameters, actor, and expiry Generic “allow agent” confirmation
Integration control Allowlist, provenance review, pinned definition, change detection Unpinned or dynamically installed tools
Operational containment Egress, rate, retry, duration, and cost limits Unrestricted calls and recursive chains
Auditability Structured policy, approval, tool, and outcome records without secrets Model transcript alone

Use this comparison during design reviews and whenever a workflow expands. More capable tools are not automatically better: each additional connection increases the possible blast radius of a compromised context.

What is a practical rollout sequence?

  1. Define one narrow agent role and document its required data, operations, destinations, and failure behavior.
  2. Create separate identities and least-privilege scopes; make read-only the starting point.
  3. Inventory proposed MCP servers and tools, verify provenance, inspect complete schemas, and pin the reviewed versions.
  4. Implement deterministic authorization, schema validation, and fail-closed handling outside the model.
  5. Move code execution and privileged actions into isolated services with restricted credentials and network egress.
  6. Add exact, expiring human approvals for destructive, financial, administrative, and externally visible actions.
  7. Instrument security-relevant logs, resource ceilings, circuit breakers, and alerts.
  8. Run adversarial tests, document accepted residual risk, and repeat testing after every material change.

OWASP’s Practical Guide for Securely Using Third-Party MCP Servers 1.0, dated November 4, 2025, is a useful checklist for integrating external MCP services. The OWASP Cornucopia Agentic AI cards add scenarios for excessive agency and cross-system reach.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can a malicious tool response make an AI agent leak data?

Yes. A response can contain text that persuades the model to retrieve or transmit information. It should be treated as untrusted data, and every proposed follow-on call must pass independent authorization, schema, destination, and approval checks.

Should an AI agent be allowed to run tools without approval?

It can run low-impact, read-only operations without a person when its scope is narrow and execution is policy-checked. Require action-specific approval for irreversible, financial, administrative, bulk, or externally visible effects, and never use a blanket approval for future actions.

How often should third-party agent integrations be re-reviewed?

Review them whenever the server, publisher, tool definition, schema, permission, retrieval path, or model-facing policy changes. Pinning a version helps detect change, but it does not remove the need to inspect runtime behavior and periodically reassess trust.

What should an agent security log avoid recording?

Do not store credentials, tokens, or unnecessary copies of sensitive prompts, tool outputs, or arguments. Keep enough metadata to trace the actor, tool version, resource, authorization result, approval, and outcome, with redaction and access controls on the logs.
