Instagram doesn’t always handle “unread” the way email does, but you can often flag a DM thread so it shows up as unread in your inbox.
The exact button name and where it appears can vary by app version (and sometimes by chat type), so this guide covers iPhone/iPad, Android, and the Instagram website—plus what to do when the option doesn’t show.
Quick answer
In the Instagram app, open your DM inbox, then long-press (or press-and-hold) the conversation you want to revisit and choose Mark as unread. On desktop, you typically do the same from the chat list (often via a context menu).
If you don’t see that option, Instagram may not support marking unread for that chat type on your account/app version—see the troubleshooting and workarounds sections below.

Before you start: what Instagram can and can’t do
Marking a chat as unread is a local inbox status for your device/app. It’s meant to help you keep track of conversations you haven’t finished.
Two important limitations:
- It’s not guaranteed to affect the other person’s view (Instagram’s read receipts and “seen” status are separate behaviors).
- The option may not appear for every chat type (for example, some message-request or special inbox categories).
Mark an Instagram DM as unread on iPhone and iPad (iOS)
Use the Instagram mobile app, because the unread toggle lives in the chat list UI.
- Open the Instagram app.
- Tap the DMs icon (paper plane/chat bubble) to go to your inbox.
- In the conversation list, press and hold the chat you want.
- Select Mark as unread.
After that, the conversation should show as unread in your inbox until you open it again (or until Instagram’s UI refreshes your status).
Mark an Instagram DM as unread on Android
The steps are essentially the same: mark the thread from the inbox list, not from inside the message view.

- Find the conversation in the list.

If you only see actions like Mute or Delete, the unread option isn’t available for that specific thread on your version/account.

If you prefer a larger screen, you can sometimes mark chats from the web interface. Availability depends on your UI rollout.

https://www.instagram.comand sign in. - Click the Messages icon.
- In the left-side conversation list, hover the chat and open its menu (or right-click if your setup allows it).
- Select Mark as unread.
If you don’t see the option, use the mobile app method (or the workarounds later in this guide).
If you don’t see the Mark as unread option
That’s common. Instagram has rolled features out in waves, and chat types can behave differently. Use the checks below before you assume the feature is gone.

Update the app and check versions
On iPhone/iPad: open the App Store → search Instagram → tap Update (if available). On Android: open Google Play → search Instagram → tap Update.
After updating, force-close Instagram and reopen it so the inbox UI reloads.
Confirm you’re in the right inbox view
In some layouts, you have multiple DM categories (like Requests). If you’re in a requests-only category, the unread toggle may be missing even though it exists in the main inbox.
Double-check you’re viewing the normal inbox thread list, then try again.

You might be in a chat type that doesn’t support it
Unread marking can be unavailable for certain special categories. If your chat doesn’t support it, the context menu may omit Mark as unread.
- Try marking a different conversation first to confirm the feature works for your account.
- If only one specific thread lacks the option, it’s likely that thread category/UI path.
Workarounds when marking unread isn’t available
If the button isn’t there, you still have a few practical options to avoid losing track of the message thread.
Use notification controls instead
For conversations you want to revisit, control how Instagram notifies you:
- Open the DM thread.
- Tap the conversation name or information icon (commonly an i in a circle).
- Adjust Notifications (mute/unmute as your UI allows).
This won’t label the thread unread, but it can keep it visible via alerts.

Simple, but effective: if you haven’t opened the conversation, Instagram may keep it in an unread state in your inbox list.
If you already opened it and the unread option is missing, you may be stuck until you can mark it from the chat list menu (if your UI supports it).

Use message requests vs. inbox behavior
If a message sits in a request category, you may not get the same unread controls. The fix may be as basic as moving the request to a normal inbox state (when Instagram offers that action).
Look for actions like Accept or View request in the request UI, then re-check the unread toggle.
Flag it another way (favorites, notes, or screenshots)
If you need a guaranteed “come back later” marker, consider a lightweight external workflow:
- Screenshot the message moment you need to revisit.
- Save the contact name somewhere you’ll check later.
- Use your phone’s reminders to create a follow-up time.
Not as elegant as an unread badge, but it’s reliable.

- Trying to mark unread from inside the message thread when your UI only offers it from the chat list. Do it from the inbox list via press-and-hold.
- Missing the small context menu on desktop. Hover the thread and look for a menu icon; on some browsers you may need to right-click instead.
- Assuming it works for every inbox category. Requests, special folders, and some system chats can behave differently.
- Not updating the app. If Instagram recently added or changed unread controls, the button may only appear after an update.
Troubleshooting checklist
If you tried the steps and nothing happens, work through this sequence.
- Check the chat list: confirm you’re long-pressing the conversation from the inbox, not tapping into it first.
- Restart the app: fully close Instagram, reopen, and try again.
- Update Instagram on iOS or Android, then retry.
- Test with another conversation: if other threads can be marked unread but one can’t, the limitation is likely chat-type specific.
- Try a different platform: if mobile doesn’t show the option, check the Instagram website; if web doesn’t show it, use iOS/Android.
If the issue persists across platforms and versions, the feature may simply be unavailable for your account or rollout stage.

Does marking an Instagram DM as unread also change what the other person sees?
Usually no. Marking unread is mainly a local inbox tracking tool. Instagram’s “seen” and read receipt behavior is separate from your unread label.
Can I mark individual messages inside a thread as unread?
Typically, Instagram’s “unread” state applies to the whole conversation thread in your inbox, not single messages. If you’re looking for message-by-message unread, the feature may not exist in your UI.
