To invite a Steam friend while using SteamOS, launch the game, open the Steam Overlay, go to your Friends list, select the friend, and choose the invite option the game provides. The command’s name and location vary by game. For supported local co-op titles, you can instead choose Remote Play Together to host a session your friend can join without owning or launching the game.
This workflow applies most directly to a Steam Deck in Gaming Mode, but the same Steam features are available on other SteamOS systems. The important distinction is between Steam’s social tools and the game’s own multiplayer implementation: Steam provides the overlay and Friends list, while each title decides how parties, lobbies, matchmaking, and invitations work.

What do you need before sending an invite?
Have the game installed and running from SteamOS Gaming Mode, and make sure the person you want to invite is already on your Steam Friends list. Your friend should be signed in on a supported device and available to accept the invitation. If either of you is offline, invisible, disconnected from Steam, or still loading the game, the invite command may be unavailable or may not produce an immediate join.
You do not need a separate chat application to send a normal Steam invitation. SteamOS includes integrated Steam Friends and Chat features, and the in-game overlay connects those social tools to the game. You may still need to use the title’s own multiplayer screen after the friend accepts, depending on how that game handles sessions.

- Standard multiplayer: The game’s ordinary ownership, platform, account, server, and matchmaking rules apply. Both players may need to own the title or meet the game’s other requirements.
- Remote Play Together: The title must support the feature, and it must be a compatible local co-op game. A guest can join the host’s session without owning or launching the game.
- Steam account status: A limited Steam account can receive friend invitations but cannot send them. That limitation can prevent you from adding someone before you ever reach the game-invite step.
- Network access: Firewall, router, proxy, school, workplace, or other managed-network restrictions can affect game traffic, voice chat, or Remote Play separately.
If you are using a Steam Deck, the hardware itself is not a requirement for your friend. You can invite someone using any supported Steam client or device, provided the game and feature support the connection. Steam Deck is simply the most common SteamOS device for this workflow.
How do you invite a Steam friend from SteamOS?
Use the Steam Overlay while the game is running. In Gaming Mode, open the overlay with the Steam client’s configured controller shortcut. The exact button combination depends on your client configuration and any custom controller mapping, so do not assume that the desktop keyboard shortcut is the handheld shortcut.
- Confirm the friendship. Open Steam Friends and Chat before launching, or use the overlay after launch, and verify that the person is already listed as a friend. If necessary, send or accept the friend request first.
- Launch the game. Start the title from your SteamOS Library and wait until you reach its main menu, lobby screen, or playable session. Some games do not expose invite controls until you have entered a session or created a lobby.
- Open the Steam Overlay. While the game remains open, use the configured SteamOS controller shortcut. The overlay should appear above the game without closing it.
- Open Friends. Select the Friends list or Friends and Chat area in the overlay. Find the person you want to join you.
- Select the friend. Open that friend’s entry and look for the command supplied by the game. Depending on the title, it may be labeled Invite to Game, Invite to Lobby, Invite to Party, Join Game, or another game-specific phrase.
- Send the invitation. Choose the available invite or matchmaking action. If the title requires a lobby, create one in the game first, then return to the overlay and send the invite.
- Wait for acceptance. Your friend must accept the invitation. After acceptance, the game determines whether they enter your lobby, party, server, or active session.
Steam’s default desktop overlay shortcut is Shift+Tab when the overlay is supported and enabled. On a Steam Deck or another SteamOS handheld, use the client’s configured controller shortcut instead. If you connect a keyboard to your handheld or switch to Desktop Mode, Shift+Tab is the standard desktop command, but a custom Steam Input layout can change how you open the overlay.
If the friend accepts but does not appear immediately, give the game time to update its lobby or party roster. Some titles require you to return from the overlay to the game, confirm a ready prompt, or select the friend’s name again from an in-game list. Those are game-specific behaviors rather than a different SteamOS invitation method.
How do you use Remote Play Together on SteamOS?
Remote Play Together is a separate invitation method for supported local co-op games. It streams the host’s game session to a friend and passes the permitted local-player controls to that guest. It is not a universal replacement for online multiplayer, and it appears only when the title supports the feature.
- Open the game’s Steam store page before playing and check the feature details for the Remote Play Together indicator.
- Launch the supported game from SteamOS Gaming Mode.
- Open the Steam Overlay while the game is running.
- Open Friends and select the friend you want to invite.
- Choose Remote Play Together from the friend’s entry, if the command is available.
- Wait for your friend to accept the invitation and connect to the session.
- Return to the game and use its local co-op or player-join controls if it asks you to add the guest.
Steam’s Remote Play sequence is to launch the game, make sure the friend is signed in on a supported device, open the in-game overlay, select the friend in the Friends list, choose Remote Play Together, and wait for acceptance. Once the invitation is accepted, the friend joins the host’s session. The guest does not have to own or launch the game for a supported local co-op title.

One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchThis differs from ordinary online multiplayer. A normal game invite generally follows the game’s standard ownership and matchmaking rules, while Remote Play Together can let one owner host a compatible local co-op game for a guest. The host still needs to own and launch the title, and both players need a connection capable of maintaining the streaming session.
What can a Remote Play Together guest do?
The game decides which local-player controls are available. Some titles give the guest a complete second-player controller role; others permit only a subset of controls, such as a gamepad while the host keeps keyboard or mouse input. If the game supports shared controls, the host may need to enable or assign them in the Remote Play or game settings. A guest joining the stream is not the same as joining the game’s dedicated online servers.
How do you know whether Remote Play Together is supported?
Check the title’s Steam store details for the Remote Play Together feature indicator. If the indicator is absent, the friend’s menu will normally not offer the Remote Play Together command. The game may still support ordinary online invites or its own lobby system, so check the multiplayer section even when Remote Play is unavailable.

Why does the invite option vary between games?
There is no single universal invite button for every Steam title. The Steam Overlay provides access to friend, game, and group invitations, but each developer decides which Steamworks features to integrate and how those commands appear. A game may expose a direct invitation from the overlay, while another may rely almost entirely on its own multiplayer menu.
Common variations include:
- Overlay-first games: Selecting a friend shows a direct invite or “invite to game” command. The recipient can accept and be placed into your lobby or session.
- Lobby-first games: You must choose Multiplayer, Host, or Create Lobby inside the game before the overlay invite becomes available.
- Party-based games: The overlay may show a party invitation, but the game still requires you to select a playlist, activity, or mission after everyone joins.
- Matchmaking games: The invite may add the friend to your group rather than send them directly into an active match. You may have to queue together.
- Game-menu-only titles: The overlay contains the friend list but no invitation command. Use the title’s own multiplayer, lobby, or social menu instead.
- Remote Play titles: A Remote Play Together command appears only when the game supports that Steam feature.
When the overlay offers no invite, that does not necessarily mean SteamOS is malfunctioning. It may simply reflect the game’s implementation. Check the game’s own multiplayer menu, help documentation, and Steam store feature list before changing system settings.
How do you invite someone to a private Steam game?
Steam allows you to invite a friend to a private game session. Steam states that when you invite a friend to a private game, that friend can see your in-game status until you exit the game or disconnect from Steam. That visibility allows the friend to join even though the session is private.
Start the game, open the overlay, select the friend, and send the available invitation. The friend still has to accept, and the title may impose its own lobby, player-count, or access rules. If the friend cannot join after accepting, check whether the session is full, whether the game requires a lobby transition, and whether the network permits the connection.
What should you check if an invite does not work?
Work through the likely causes in order: overlay configuration, the game’s invitation flow, Steam account status, the recipient’s availability, and network restrictions. This order helps separate a SteamOS control problem from a title-specific limitation.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
The Steam Overlay will not open
In the Steam client, check Steam > Settings > In-game > Enable the Steam Overlay while in-game. Then open the game’s properties under Library > Properties > General and make sure its individual overlay option is enabled. A global setting can be enabled while a particular game has its own overlay option disabled.
On SteamOS, use the controller shortcut configured for the Steam client. If you changed Steam Input, installed a community layout, or remapped buttons, the shortcut may no longer match the default. Test the overlay from another game if possible. If it opens elsewhere, the problem is probably specific to the title or its overlay compatibility rather than SteamOS as a whole.
On a desktop keyboard, Steam identifies Shift+Tab as the default overlay shortcut. That keybind applies only where the overlay is supported and enabled. It does not guarantee that the same physical input exists on a handheld controller layout.
You cannot find an invite command
The game may not support overlay-based party or matchmaking invitations, or it may require you to create a lobby before inviting anyone. Open the game’s multiplayer menu and look for Host, Create Lobby, Party, Friends, or Invite controls. Some games show the invitation only after selecting a mode or mission.

Check the Steam store feature list as well. If you are trying Remote Play Together, the title must explicitly support it. If that indicator is missing, use the game’s normal online multiplayer route or its in-game invitation system instead.
You cannot invite a friend
First verify that the person is actually on your Steam Friends list and appears online or available. A limited Steam account can receive friend invitations but cannot send them. If your account is limited, ask the other person to send the request, accept an existing request through Friends and Chat, and then retry the game invitation.
Also confirm that you are selecting the correct friend entry. Duplicate names, offline profiles, blocked accounts, or a second account signed in on another device can make it appear that the invitation failed. The recipient may also need to accept the invitation in Steam notifications or the overlay before the game updates its party.
Your friend accepts, but does not join
Return to the game after acceptance and look for a lobby or party confirmation. Some titles put the friend in a staging area instead of the active match. Others require the host to press Start, Ready, Launch, or Join after the invitation is accepted.
Check player limits and session privacy. A full lobby, an invite-only room, a region restriction, or a game mode that does not support drop-in players can prevent the final join even though the Steam invitation was delivered successfully.
Remote Play Together is missing
Confirm that the game’s Steam store page lists Remote Play Together. The feature is intended for supported local co-op sessions, not every multiplayer title. If the indicator is present but the command is still absent, launch the game first, open the overlay from the active session, and verify that your friend is signed in on a supported device.
Remote Play Together also depends on the game exposing a local co-op mode. A title may advertise the feature but require you to reach its local multiplayer screen before a second player can join. Follow the game’s own prompts after the friend accepts.
Remote Play or another invitation fails over the network
Firewall rules, router settings, carrier-grade restrictions, school or workplace networks, and proxy configurations can interfere with the connection. Steam documents separate network requirements for game traffic, Steam voice chat, and Remote Play. A network that permits one of these services may still restrict another, so test the feature that is failing rather than assuming all Steam functions use identical traffic.

For Remote Play, Steam recommends a wired network for the best streaming experience, while noting that actual results vary with the network. If a wired connection is not practical, reduce competing traffic, move closer to the wireless access point, and test with both players on less restricted networks. These steps address connection quality; they do not add Remote Play support to a game that lacks the feature.

If voice chat works but Remote Play does not, focus on Remote Play and router or firewall rules. If the friend cannot even receive the invitation, focus first on Steam status, account friendship, overlay availability, and notification delivery.
Which invitation method should you choose?
| Method | Best suited to | Ownership and control path | Likely failure point |
|---|---|---|---|
| Game invite through the Steam Overlay | A title with an overlay-based party, lobby, or matchmaking invite | Normal game ownership and matchmaking rules apply; open Overlay, Friends, then the game’s invite command. | Overlay disabled, friend unavailable, or the game’s Steamworks integration does not expose an invite. |
| Invite through the game’s own menu | A title that handles invitations from its multiplayer or lobby screen | Follow the game’s party or lobby flow; you may need to create a room before inviting. | Incorrect game mode, full lobby, privacy setting, or a title-specific matchmaking problem. |
| Remote Play Together | A supported local co-op game | The host owns and launches the game; the guest can join without owning or launching it after accepting the Steam invitation. | The game lacks support, local co-op is not active, or network streaming is restricted or unstable. |
The practical rule is to use the game’s standard invite when you are joining its normal online multiplayer. Choose Remote Play Together when the title supports it and you want to host local co-op remotely. If the command is not visible, check the game’s feature list and in-game multiplayer menu before troubleshooting the SteamOS installation.

Can I invite someone who does not own the game?
Only in cases the game supports a guest-friendly feature such as Remote Play Together. For supported local co-op titles, the friend can join your hosted session without owning or launching the game. Ordinary online multiplayer invitations generally follow the title’s normal ownership and matchmaking rules.
Does my friend need a Steam Deck?
No. Your friend needs to be signed in on a supported device for the relevant feature. A Steam Deck is the common SteamOS host, but the guest can use another supported Steam client or device when the game and feature allow it.
Can I send an invite before launching the game?
The reliable route is to launch the game first and open the in-game overlay. Some titles let you invite from a library or chat context, but the game-specific command may not appear until you have entered a lobby or active session.
Why does Steam show my friend as online but not offer Invite?
Online status alone does not guarantee that the game exposes an invite command. The title may require a lobby, may use its own multiplayer menu, may not support Steam invitations, or may offer only Remote Play Together for a supported local co-op mode.
Can a limited Steam account accept a friend request?
Yes. Steam’s account limitation prevents the account from sending friend invitations, but a limited account can receive them. Have the other person send the request, accept it through Friends and Chat, and then try the game invitation.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsDo Remote Play Together and Steam voice chat have the same network requirements?
No. Steam lists separate network requirements for game traffic, voice chat, and Remote Play. A connection that permits one feature may still restrict another, so troubleshoot the service that is failing.
What happens if I invite a friend to a private game?
Steam says the friend can see your in-game status until you exit the game or disconnect from Steam, which allows the friend to join. The game can still enforce its own player limit, lobby, and privacy rules.
