To change your look in Marvel Rivals, open Heroes, select the hero, then go to Cosmetics → Costumes. Choose a costume you own and select Equip. The game calls skins “costumes,” and you change them from the selected hero’s menu—not from one universal wardrobe. If an outfit is locked, you’ll need to meet its specific unlock requirement first. The same route is useful on Windows, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S, although the exact confirmation button can differ by platform and client version.
How do you equip a costume in Marvel Rivals?
Use the selected hero’s Cosmetics menu to equip an owned costume. The route below is described in an April 2026 walkthrough; official terminology also uses Heroes, Cosmetics, and costumes. Menu prompts or controls may differ by platform or client version, so follow the prompt shown on your screen instead of relying on a fixed button name from an older guide.

- Select the hero whose appearance you want to change. Costumes are organized under that specific character.
- Open Cosmetics, then choose Costumes.
- Browse the available outfits and select one that is shown as owned and available to equip. A mouse click or the on-screen controller confirmation selects it.
- Choose Equip and follow any on-screen confirmation. The selected costume should then be the active look for that hero.
This is a hero-by-hero change. Selecting a costume for one character does not create a universal wardrobe entry that can be transferred to another character. If you want to change another hero, return to Heroes, select that hero, and repeat the same route.
If you want the hero’s default appearance back, select the default costume if it appears as an owned, selectable option in that hero’s costume list. The available options and their layout may vary, so don’t assume every screen presents the default in the same way. Look for the entry that the current client identifies as selectable, then use the same Equip control.

What counts as an owned costume?
An owned costume is an item the menu presents as available for your account, rather than a locked listing or a Store preview. The exact visual treatment can change with the client, but the important distinction is functional: an owned item can be selected and equipped, while a locked item requires an acquisition step first. If the menu shows an outfit but does not offer Equip, check its status before trying different controls.
Why can’t you equip a costume?
The most common distinction to check is whether the outfit is owned or merely visible. A costume listing or preview in the Store does not mean it has been unlocked for your account. A missing Equip option usually means you are looking at the wrong hero, a locked item, or an option that must be acquired or customized separately.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Check the selected hero
Costumes belong to specific heroes. If you are viewing the wrong hero’s Cosmetics menu, the costume you want may not appear among that hero’s options, even if you have seen the outfit elsewhere. Return to Heroes, select the matching character, and check Cosmetics → Costumes again. Do not expect a costume listed for one character to become available in another character’s menu.
Check whether the costume is locked
If the outfit is marked as locked, an Equip option may not be available. Open its listing and check how that particular costume is obtained. Depending on the item, the route may involve the Store, a quest, a Twitch Drop, or a ranked reward; there is no single unlock method that applies to every costume.
Read the requirement attached to the individual item rather than assuming that every costume costs money or that every costume is earned through play. A Store offer can have its own contents and timing, while an event, Drop, or ranked reward can have separate eligibility conditions. Once the requirement is satisfied, return to the hero’s costume list and look for an owned, selectable entry.
Distinguish a preview from an unlock
Seeing a costume in a Store listing lets you inspect an offer, but it is not proof that the outfit is already yours. Previewing a model, reading a bundle description, or seeing an item advertised in a dated announcement does not itself add the costume to your account. Resolve the item’s acquisition requirement first; then return to the hero’s costume list and look for an owned selectable entry.
Check the item, not just the bundle name
A bundle may list a base costume alongside other cosmetic components. In the October 29, 2026 announcement for Winter Soldier – Celestial Soldier, the costume bundle, a chroma, and ultimate-ability visual effects are identified separately. If you want a color variant or ability effect, inspect whether that component is included or listed as its own offering. Do not assume that selecting a bundle name means every separately listed component is automatically equipped.
What is the difference between Costumes and Customize?
Costumes is where you switch the hero’s base outfit. Customize is for additional options such as a color palette, when the selected costume supports them. These controls answer different questions: Costumes changes which main outfit is active, while Customize changes an eligible variation of that outfit.
Not every costume has a chroma, and a chroma is not the same as equipping a different base costume. A customization walkthrough places Customize above the usual acquire-or-equip control for eligible items; check the selected costume’s own options rather than expecting arbitrary recoloring. If no Customize option appears, that costume may not have a supported palette, or the relevant option may be listed separately.

Use this order when both options are present:
- Open the hero’s Cosmetics → Costumes list.
- Select the base costume you own.
- Use Customize only if the item exposes an eligible chroma or other customization.
- Confirm the displayed option using the current on-screen prompt.
NetEase’s October 29, 2026 patch notes list the Winter Soldier – Celestial Soldier costume bundle separately from its chroma and ultimate-ability visual effects (VFX). That separation is a useful reminder: an alternate color or effect may be a distinct offering, not an automatic part of every costume. Equipping the base costume and selecting a chroma are therefore separate checks.

Store purchases are one route, but official Season 10.5 notes dated October 9, 2026 also describe quest, Twitch Drop, and ranked costume rewards. Availability and eligibility depend on the particular reward and its conditions. The safest approach is to open the individual item or current event information and follow the requirement shown there.
Store bundles
The October 29, 2026 patch announcement gives the Winter Soldier – Celestial Soldier bundle an availability window of October 30 through November 27, 2026 (UTC). The announcement also lists the chroma and ultimate-ability VFX separately. Check the in-game Store for the actual offer, price, included items, and current status; a dated availability window should not be treated as a permanent listing or a guarantee that later bundles follow the same format.
The Store’s format can change. An August 2026 announcement described a pick-your-own bundle in which players could choose specific included items. That format means the contents should be read item by item rather than inferred from the bundle’s headline. It does not guarantee that every later offer, including every Winter Soldier offer, will use a pick-your-own structure.
Quest rewards
The October 9 Season 10.5 notes list a Thor costume earned through a quest. A quest reward can therefore be a separate path from buying a Store bundle. Check the current quest wording, completion requirement, and availability before assuming the reward remains active. The dated note identifies the example and its route, but it does not establish that the same quest is still open on every later date.

Twitch Drops
The same Season 10.5 notes list an Angela Twitch Drop. Drops generally have their own event and account conditions, so verify the current Drop instructions and time window. Seeing Angela’s costume named in a seasonal note is not, by itself, confirmation that a current stream campaign is running or that the reward has already been granted.
Ranked rewards
The notes also list a Jeff reward for reaching Gold tier. This is an example of a ranked path rather than a Store purchase. Confirm the season, required tier, and any additional conditions displayed by the current ranked program. Do not treat a historical Gold-tier listing as proof that the reward can still be claimed after the relevant season or event ends.
How much do costumes cost?
Marvel Rivals is listed as free to play on Steam with in-app purchases. That describes the game’s availability model, not a universal price for costumes. Some looks may be Store offers, while others may be tied to quests, Drops, or ranked programs. The official announcements cited here do not establish one price that applies to every outfit. Read the current in-game listing for the specific item, its bundle contents, and any displayed purchase requirement.
There is also no need to buy a physical product to unlock an in-game costume. A digital Store bundle is an in-game purchase. If a PS5 player needs a replacement controller, a DualSense wireless controller is a relevant hardware search because the PlayStation listing identifies PS5 and DualSense support, but a controller neither grants a costume nor fixes a locked listing. Keep hardware replacement separate from cosmetic acquisition.

Does the equip process differ on PC and console?
The useful cross-platform guidance is the same menu route: open Heroes, choose the character, and use Cosmetics → Costumes. The official site links to Windows, PlayStation, and Xbox Series X|S releases, and PlayStation’s listing identifies PS5 and DualSense support. The available documentation does not establish the exact equip-button mapping for every platform in the October 2026 client.
On a controller, use the confirmation prompt displayed on your screen rather than relying on a button name from a different platform or an older guide. On PC, use the visible selection and equip controls. If a prompt or label differs from a walkthrough, follow the current client’s on-screen instructions. The menu labels are the stable part of the route; the physical button used to confirm a selection is the part that can vary.
What if the menu looks different?
Client updates can change placement, wording, or the order in which controls are displayed. Start from Heroes and identify the selected character before looking for the costume list. Then use the currently visible labels for Cosmetics, Costumes, Customize, and Equip. Do not substitute a Store preview screen for the hero-specific cosmetics screen.
How can you verify which costume is active?
Return to the selected hero’s costume list and check which owned item is selected or equipped. If you changed a chroma, verify the palette under that costume’s customization rather than expecting the base costume name to change. If you changed heroes, verify the second hero separately; each character has its own costume context.
NetEase’s May 2025 patch notes state that portraits in Heroes were updated to reflect the currently equipped costumes. The hero portrait can therefore help confirm the chosen appearance. Treat it as a visual check alongside the costume list, not as a replacement for checking whether the item is owned and equipped.
If the portrait or preview does not appear to match what you selected, return to the hero’s Cosmetics menu, confirm that the intended item still shows as equipped, and check whether you selected a chroma or a different base costume. A Store preview can show an appearance that is not yet unlocked, so compare the status of the actual item in the hero menu.
Are downloaded skin mods an ordinary way to change costumes?
No. An official NetEase notice dated October 15, 2026 warns about certain mods that modify models, textures, or memory and refers to anti-cheat enforcement. Those modifications are not the normal in-game equip route. Use the game’s costume menu and official acquisition paths rather than treating a downloaded mod as an approved cosmetic unlock.
A mod is also not a substitute for ownership. It does not turn a locked Store listing into an owned costume in the game’s Cosmetics menu, and it can introduce enforcement risk when it changes protected game data. For a normal appearance change, stay within the hero-specific Costumes and eligible Customize controls.
What should you check before trying to equip a skin?
- Hero: Make sure the intended character is selected under Heroes.
- Menu: Open that hero’s Cosmetics → Costumes, not only a Store preview.
- Ownership: Confirm the item is shown as owned and selectable.
- Requirement: If it is locked, read whether it uses a Store purchase, quest, Twitch Drop, or ranked reward.
- Base versus variant: Decide whether you want a different costume or a chroma under Customize.
- Controls: Use the confirmation prompt displayed by your current platform.
- Timing: Check dated event and Store windows because availability can end.
This checklist prevents the most common false conclusions: that seeing an outfit means owning it, that every outfit is purchased, that every bundle contains every listed cosmetic, or that a button shown in an old guide must match your current controller.

How often do new costumes appear?
An August 2026 Store-format announcement used the developer’s wording “Over 2 new costumes released weekly.” That is a statement from that announcement, not a measured October 2026 rate or a promise of future releases. It provides context for why Store inventory and event listings can change quickly, but it should not be used to predict a specific costume’s availability.
For a costume you want now, rely on the current in-game listing and its displayed requirement. For a seasonal reward, rely on the current quest, Drop, or ranked information. Older announcements can explain how an item was introduced without proving that the same offer remains claimable.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Can a costume be equipped immediately after unlocking?
Once the item is presented as owned and selectable in the hero’s costume list, return to that list and use Equip. The important test is the item’s current status in Heroes → Cosmetics → Costumes, not merely whether you completed an announcement, watched a stream, reached a rank, or viewed a Store page. If Equip is still absent, recheck the selected hero and the item’s displayed state.

Does changing a costume alter gameplay?
The menu route described here changes the hero’s appearance. A chroma changes an eligible color palette, and the Winter Soldier announcement separately identifies ultimate-ability VFX as another cosmetic component. Do not treat a costume, chroma, or visual effect listing as interchangeable with the base costume selection. Equip the component you actually want and inspect the offer’s description.
What is the shortest reliable answer?
Open Heroes, choose the correct hero, open Cosmetics → Costumes, select an owned outfit, and press the on-screen Equip control. If the outfit is locked, follow its specific Store, quest, Twitch Drop, or ranked requirement. Use Customize only for costumes that expose a chroma or other eligible option, and verify the result in the hero list and portrait.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the exact menu path to change a skin in Marvel Rivals?
Open Heroes, select the intended hero, choose Cosmetics, then Costumes. Select an owned costume and use the Equip control shown by your current client.
Why is there no Equip button?
First confirm that you selected the correct hero. Then check whether the outfit is locked or only a Store preview. A locked item must meet its specific acquisition requirement before it becomes an owned selectable costume.
Can I equip a costume I only previewed in the Store?
No. A preview or listing does not prove ownership. Return to the hero’s Cosmetics → Costumes menu after acquiring the item and look for an owned entry with Equip available.
How do I change a costume’s color?
Select an eligible owned costume and look for Customize. A chroma is an optional color palette, not a replacement for switching the base costume, and not every costume offers one.

Does an equipped costume change the hero’s portrait?
NetEase’s May 2025 patch notes say portraits in Heroes were updated to reflect the currently equipped costumes. If the portrait does not appear to match, check the selected costume in that hero’s Cosmetics menu.
Does buying a costume bundle automatically include its chroma and ability effects?
Not necessarily. In the October 29, 2026 announcement for Winter Soldier – Celestial Soldier, the costume bundle, chroma, and ultimate-ability VFX are listed separately, so inspect the specific offer’s contents.
Can I use the same costume on every hero?
Costumes are shown under the selected hero’s own Cosmetics menu, rather than in a universal wardrobe. Check the intended hero’s costume list to see which outfits are available for that character.
Are all Marvel Rivals costumes paid?
No single method applies to every costume. Store offers exist, but the October 9, 2026 Season 10.5 notes also list a quest-earned Thor costume, an Angela Twitch Drop, and a Gold-tier Jeff reward. Check the current item’s requirement.
Is the Winter Soldier – Celestial Soldier bundle always available?
The October 29, 2026 announcement gives an availability window of October 30 through November 27, 2026 UTC. Check the in-game Store because dated offers and their contents can change.
Can a controller button from a guide be wrong?
Yes. The menu route is shared across Windows, PS5, and Xbox Series X|S, but the exact October 2026 equip-button mapping for every platform is not established. Follow the confirmation prompt displayed on your screen.

No. Costumes are digital in-game cosmetics. A DualSense wireless controller may be relevant only as a PS5 replacement because the PlayStation listing identifies DualSense support; it does not grant a costume or unlock a locked item.
Are downloaded skin mods an approved equip method?
No. NetEase’s October 15, 2026 notice warns about certain model-, texture-, and memory-modifying mods and anti-cheat enforcement. Use the in-game Costumes and Customize menus instead.
The Bottom Line
Use Heroes → select your hero → Cosmetics → Costumes, choose an owned outfit, and select the on-screen Equip control. Locked listings need their own unlock path; chromas belong under Customize when supported. Store, quest, Twitch Drop, and ranked rewards have different conditions and dates, so check the individual item rather than assuming every costume works the same way.
