Scientists measure Arctic cloud-forming aerosols by combining aircraft profiles, shipboard sampling, mountain observatories and cloud-residual instruments. Condensation and optical particle counters establish particle number and dry size; cloud-condensation-nuclei (CCN) counters test which particles activate into water droplets; ice-nucleating-particle (INP) assays identify particles that initiate freezing; and chemical and single-particle instruments reveal composition and sources. Counterflow virtual impactors collect the particles that actually entered clouds so their residual nuclei can be analysed. No single measurement is sufficient: researchers compare activation data with meteorology, cloud microphysics and air-mass history to distinguish particles that could form clouds from those that did so in a particular Arctic air mass.
What are scientists trying to measure when they study Arctic aerosols?
The key question is not simply how many particles are in the air. It is whether a particle has the size, water affinity and composition needed to become a cloud droplet or an ice crystal under the conditions present in an Arctic cloud.

CCN are aerosol particles that activate into liquid water droplets when air reaches a specified water-vapour supersaturation. Activation depends strongly on dry particle diameter and hygroscopicity, the tendency to take up water. A relatively large or water-attracting particle generally activates at a lower supersaturation than a smaller or less hygroscopic one. Researchers therefore report CCN concentration as a function of supersaturation, rather than treating total aerosol number as an equivalent measure.
Ice-nucleating particles (INP)
INP are particles that trigger freezing in supercooled cloud droplets or help ice form by another heterogeneous process. Their effectiveness depends on temperature, particle surface properties, mineral or biological material and the history of the particle. INP concentrations can be far lower than total particle concentrations, so they require dedicated freezing assays and careful statistics.

Why Arctic measurements are unusually difficult
Arctic aerosol populations change sharply with season, sea-ice state, open water, storms and transport from lower latitudes. Winter air can be exceptionally clean, while summer ocean and biological activity can add particles and ice-active material. Sparse observing sites mean that a short aircraft flight, a ship transect and a mountain record each sample different pieces of the system.
Which platforms measure cloud-forming particles in the Arctic?
Researchers deliberately combine platforms because each one resolves a different dimension of the problem. Aircraft map vertical structure, ships sample remote ocean and sea-ice air, and fixed observatories provide continuous records against which campaign snapshots can be interpreted.
| Platform | What it contributes | Main limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Research aircraft | Profiles aerosol number, size, CCN, INP, black carbon, optical properties and cloud properties through the atmosphere | Flights are episodic and can miss rapid changes between sorties |
| Research ship | Samples marine and sea-ice boundary-layer air over a moving route; RV Polarstern carried a year-round aerosol suite during MOSAiC | Measurements are tied to the ship track and can be affected by ship exhaust unless inlets and wind sectors are screened |
| Mountain observatory | Provides continuous seasonal-to-multi-year records and can sample cloud air directly with a ground-based virtual impactor | Local terrain, boundary-layer changes and inlet artefacts can influence what reaches the instruments |
The ARCSIX campaign plan illustrates the breadth of a modern aircraft-and-surface strategy. It combines particle number, dry-size distributions, hygroscopicity, volatility, optical properties, CCN spectra, INP concentrations, black carbon, bulk chemistry and single-particle composition. MOSAiC used a comparable year-round approach on RV Polarstern, measuring number and size together with CCN, fluorescent particles and chemical components.
How do particle counters determine aerosol number and size?
Particle counters provide the physical baseline for every other measurement. A condensation particle counter (CPC) grows nanometre-scale particles by condensing a working fluid onto them. The enlarged droplets are then counted optically, allowing particles too small for ordinary optical detection to be measured.
Optical particle counters and ultra-high-sensitivity aerosol spectrometers detect larger particles by measuring how individual particles scatter light. The instruments divide observations into size bins, producing a dry-diameter distribution rather than one total count. During ACLOUD, a CPC detected particles down to about 10 nm, while an optical counter covered particles above 250 nm. The overlap and gap between instruments must be checked when researchers combine their distributions.
Size is also used as a practical proxy for cloud activity. At Zeppelin, the concentration of particles with dry diameters greater than 70 nm, called N70, is used as a warm-cloud CCN proxy. It is not a substitute for a CCN counter because particles of the same size can have different hygroscopicity, but it provides a continuous indicator when direct activation measurements are unavailable.

How is CCN activation measured directly?
A CCN counter exposes a sampled aerosol stream to a controlled water-vapour supersaturation. Particles that activate grow into droplets large enough to be counted optically. The instrument repeats the measurement at several supersaturations to create a CCN spectrum: concentration activated at each imposed supersaturation.
What the CCN spectrum tells researchers
The spectrum shows how readily the population activates and allows scientists to compare air masses, seasons and vertical layers. A shift toward activation at lower supersaturation usually indicates larger or more hygroscopic particles. Pairing the spectrum with a size distribution and hygroscopicity measurement helps separate the effects of size from composition.
Inferring activation from cloud observations
At a ground observatory, researchers can also examine the residuals left after cloud droplets evaporate. The dry diameter of those residual nuclei provides an estimate of the particles that activated in the sampled cloud. At Zeppelin, long-term observations found average activation diameters of 58–78 nm when updraft speeds were below 1 m s−1. Because stronger updrafts can activate smaller particles, the updraft condition is part of the qualification on that range.
How do scientists measure ice-nucleating particles?
INP measurements impose freezing conditions on droplets containing sampled aerosol. An instrument cools an array or stream of droplets, records the temperature at which each freezes and uses the fraction frozen to calculate an INP concentration for the sampled air and temperature interval. Other designs expose particles to controlled ice-forming conditions online or analyse collected material offline.

The result is temperature-dependent: an INP concentration quoted without its freezing temperature is incomplete.
MOSAiC followed the seasonal cycle from September 2019 through October 2020. Winter and spring had lower INP concentrations associated with transport from lower latitudes, while summer concentrations were higher and were likely connected to marine biological production. The wording matters: the observations support those source associations but do not mean every summer INP was marine or every winter INP arrived from outside the Arctic.

How do cloud-residual instruments reveal which particles entered a cloud?
A counterflow virtual impactor (CVI) uses inertia and a counterflow of clean air to separate cloud droplets and ice crystals from smaller, unactivated interstitial aerosol. The collected cloud particles are evaporated or dried, leaving residual nuclei for analysis. At Zeppelin, the ground-based CVI is called a GCVI.
Residuals can then be counted with CPCs, classified by mobility analysers and examined with composition instruments. This approach answers a more specific question than a whole-air sample: what particles were incorporated into the sampled cloud elements?
Interpretation still requires caution. A residual may be a CCN that formed a liquid droplet, an INP associated with an ice particle, or a particle altered by in-cloud scavenging, droplet processing or secondary ice production. The CVI also has transmission efficiencies and cut sizes that must be characterised. Researchers therefore compare residual measurements with cloud microphysics and with a parallel interstitial-aerosol sample instead of treating every residual as an original nucleation particle.
How do chemical and single-particle instruments identify aerosol sources?
Mass spectrometers and other chemical analysers determine whether particles contain sulfate, nitrate, ammonium, chloride, organic material or black carbon. These species indicate both possible sources and atmospheric processing. For example, black carbon can mark combustion influence, while sulfate and ammonium can reflect oxidation and neutralisation of sulfur-containing emissions.
Fluorescence instruments add a rapid screen for biological material, and single-particle instruments reveal mixing state: whether salts, organics, soot and biological components occur together in one particle or in separate populations. Mixing state matters because two particles with the same diameter can have different water uptake and ice activity.
Researchers combine composition with size and activation rather than assigning a source from chemistry alone. Air-mass back trajectories, wind direction, sea-ice position and local meteorology are used to test whether an apparent marine, terrestrial or transported signal is physically plausible.

What have Arctic measurements shown about cloud-forming aerosols?
Seasonal cloud-particle numbers at Zeppelin
Koike and colleagues reported a median cloud-particle number of 65 ± 8 cm−3 at Mount Zeppelin during May–July. From October–March, the median was 8 ± 7 cm−3. These are cloud-particle counts at that observatory and period, not a universal Arctic average. The contrast demonstrates why a single campaign snapshot cannot represent the full annual cycle.
Small particles after sea-ice freeze-up
During the Arctic Ocean 2018 expedition, Aitken-mode particles, approximately 70 nm in diameter or smaller, contributed substantially to CCN or cloud-droplet residuals after freeze-up. Larger accumulation-mode particles were more associated with oceanic air. This result shows why counting only large accumulation-mode aerosol can miss an important fraction of particles that enter clouds in particular sea-ice conditions.
Year-round INP variability during MOSAiC
The MOSAiC record demonstrates that INP availability changes with season and source region. Lower winter and spring concentrations coincided with transport from lower latitudes, whereas enhanced summer concentrations were consistent with marine biological production. The annual record is valuable precisely because aircraft campaigns alone would undersample those transitions.
How do the main methods compare?
The following comparison separates a direct activation measurement from a proxy and from a cloud-residual observation. A method can be highly useful without answering all three questions.

What is the step-by-step measurement workflow?
- Define the air mass and cloud state. Record temperature, humidity, pressure, wind, cloud phase, liquid water or ice content and updraft conditions. Back trajectories identify whether sampled air recently crossed ocean, sea ice, land or lower-latitude regions.
- Measure the whole aerosol population. Use a CPC for ultrafine particles and optical instruments for larger sizes. Check inlet flows, size-bin overlap and losses before merging distributions.
- Characterise particle properties. Measure hygroscopicity, volatility, optical properties, black carbon and chemical composition. These observations indicate whether particles are likely to take up water or absorb radiation.
- Measure CCN activation. Run the CCN counter at a sequence of supersaturations and report the resulting spectrum with temperature, pressure and flow conditions.
- Measure INP activity. Apply online or offline freezing assays and report concentration together with the temperature range and sample treatment.
- Sample cloud particles. Operate a CVI or GCVI when cloud droplets or ice crystals are present. Analyse dried residuals for number, mobility, chemistry and biological fluorescence.
- Cross-check and attribute. Compare activation and residual data with cloud microphysics, meteorology, parallel aerosol measurements and air-mass history. Only then estimate which sources contributed to the observed cloud-forming population.
What can bias Arctic CCN and INP measurements?
- Artificial activation: CCN and INP instruments impose laboratory-like supersaturation or freezing conditions. As Karlsson and colleagues noted, these studies measure concentrations by artificially activating aerosol particles, so the result is a controlled response rather than a direct count of every particle that formed a cloud element in nature.
- Inlet transmission losses: Very large particles, sticky material and ice can be lost before reaching an instrument. Losses alter both number and composition, especially when separate inlets feed different instruments.
- Ice and snow shattering: Aircraft or ground inlets can break ice or snow into fragments that appear as aerosol or cloud residuals. Wind-sector screening and instrument intercomparisons help identify this artefact.
- Cloud processing: Scavenging can remove particles, while aqueous chemistry and secondary ice processes can create or modify residuals. A residual therefore cannot automatically be labelled the original CCN or INP.
- Local terrain and contamination: Mountain observatories can be influenced by upslope flow, boundary-layer decoupling and nearby snow or vegetation. Ships must screen for exhaust plumes and changing wind direction.
- Sampling gaps: Arctic observations remain sparse outside major campaigns. A long fixed-site record and an aircraft profile answer different questions and should not be averaged as though they were interchangeable.
For these reasons, reliable studies use redundant instruments, document inlet performance, retain the meteorological context and report uncertainty. Agreement between independent size, activation, residual and composition measurements is stronger evidence than any one channel alone.
Why do these measurements matter for Arctic climate estimates?
Cloud droplets and ice crystals control cloud reflectivity, lifetime and precipitation, which in turn influence how much solar and terrestrial radiation the Arctic surface receives. A particle-number increase does not necessarily produce more droplets: the particles must activate at the cloud’s supersaturation, survive scavenging and remain present in the relevant layer. Likewise, a change in INP concentration matters only in relation to cloud temperature, liquid water and the competing pathways for ice formation.
Best Value
The most defensible interpretation therefore links a measured aerosol population to a specific cloud process and air mass. Combining vertical profiles, continuous surface records, direct CCN and INP tests, cloud residuals and chemical attribution gives climate models constraints that a total aerosol count cannot provide.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between a CCN measurement and a cloud-droplet residual measurement?
A CCN counter activates particles at a chosen laboratory supersaturation and counts the droplets produced. A cloud-residual measurement samples droplets or ice that existed in an actual cloud, evaporates them and analyses what remained, so it includes the effects of the cloud’s natural dynamics and in-cloud processing.

Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallWhy can a 70-nanometre particle be a useful CCN proxy but not a guarantee of activation?
Dry diameter is only one control on activation. Hygroscopicity, mixing state and the cloud’s supersaturation also matter, so N70 at Zeppelin is a practical warm-cloud indicator rather than a one-to-one count of activated droplets.
How do scientists tell whether Arctic INP came from the ocean or from lower latitudes?
They combine INP concentration and temperature spectra with chemical and fluorescent signatures, wind direction, sea-ice and ocean conditions, and air-mass back trajectories. The evidence supports source associations but rarely assigns every individual particle to one origin.
Why are aircraft measurements not enough to describe Arctic aerosol all year?
Aircraft provide detailed vertical profiles but fly only during selected sorties and weather windows. Seasonal observatories and year-round ship deployments capture persistent changes, such as the winter-to-summer INP contrast observed during MOSAiC, that episodic flights can miss.
