Interest rates and AI spending affect technology stocks through two linked channels: valuation and cash economics. Higher rates can reduce the present value investors assign to distant earnings and raise the cost of financing expansion. AI investment can increase demand for chips, networking, data-center capacity, cooling and power equipment, while making the companies buying that infrastructure more capital-intensive. The result is not a uniform rise or fall for all technology shares. A useful assessment compares each company’s exposure, valuation, demand evidence, cash flow, financing and expected return timeline.
How do interest rates affect technology stocks?
Higher interest rates can pressure technology valuations because expected future profits are discounted at a higher rate. The effect is strongest when a company’s valuation depends heavily on earnings many years away, but stock prices also respond to why rates moved, changes in earnings forecasts, balance-sheet strength and investor risk appetite.

Why discount rates matter
An equity value is based partly on cash flows expected in future years. When the discount rate rises, those distant cash flows are worth less in today’s dollars, all else equal. A profitable company with substantial current cash generation may be less exposed than a company whose valuation assumes rapid growth and large profits later.
This is a sensitivity, not a mechanical rule. Rates may rise because economic growth is strengthening, which can improve some technology companies’ sales. Conversely, rates may fall because growth is weakening, which can help valuations while hurting revenue expectations. The same rate move can therefore produce different results across sectors and companies.

Borrowing and refinancing channels
Policy tightening also feeds into corporate financing. New bonds can carry higher coupons, floating-rate debt can reprice, and maturing obligations may be more expensive to refinance. A company funding data centers or acquisitions with external capital has less flexibility when interest expense rises. Companies with substantial internal cash generation can continue investing without the same immediate funding pressure, although their opportunity cost and free-cash-flow trade-offs remain.
The Bank for International Settlements’ 2026 Annual Economic Report warns that policy-rate tightening can trigger sharp asset-price pullbacks when valuations are elevated and financial vulnerabilities are present. That is a risk scenario, not a prediction that every technology stock will decline.

AI spending benefits companies that sell scarce infrastructure, but it is a cost and execution commitment for companies purchasing that infrastructure. Performance can diverge sharply within the same AI value chain.
Infrastructure suppliers
Orders for processors, memory, networking equipment, servers, cooling systems, data-center capacity and power equipment can lift revenue for suppliers. Their near-term results depend on order visibility, production capacity, pricing, customer concentration and whether demand persists after initial build-outs. A supplier can benefit from industry-wide spending even when the eventual applications producing the demand have not yet generated high margins.
Infrastructure buyers
Cloud providers and other large technology companies must spend before they can sell AI capacity or applications at scale. Capital expenditure can support future revenue, but it also consumes cash, increases depreciation and may require debt, equity issuance or leases. The investment pays off only if customers buy enough services at prices that cover operating and financing costs and produce an acceptable return on invested capital.
AI adopters outside the infrastructure chain
Software, financial, industrial and consumer companies may use AI to improve products or reduce labor and service costs. Their stock response depends on measurable adoption and margins rather than on headline infrastructure totals. An adopter with modest spending and clear productivity gains can outperform a heavy spender whose monetization remains uncertain.

What do current hyperscaler capex estimates actually show?
Published estimates show the scale of the build-out, but they are not interchangeable totals and do not prove that spending will earn a return.
| Figure | Scope and date | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| USD 697 billion estimated 2026 capex | Five U.S. hyperscalers—Alphabet, Amazon, Meta, Microsoft and Oracle; J.P. Morgan Asset Management estimates and observations as of June 8, 2026 | Up USD 173 billion from the beginning of 2026 for that defined group; an estimate, not realized spending |
| AI capex equal to 93% of operating cash flow | Same five-company group; 2026 estimate from J.P. Morgan Asset Management, compared with 33% in 2023 | Shows the potential cash-flow burden; it is not a measure of profit or return |
| Hyperscaler capex approaching USD 800 billion in 2026 | J.P. Morgan Asset Management consensus estimate for a specified company grouping, covering 2026–2028 outlook work | Different grouping and method from the USD 697 billion estimate |
| More than USD 1 trillion annually from 2027 | J.P. Morgan Asset Management consensus projection for the same broader grouping and period | A forecast, not a reported industry total |
J.P. Morgan Asset Management reported that investor reactions to higher spending became more conditional on accompanying revenue estimates. In its measurement period, correlation among hyperscalers declined and the performance gap between the strongest and weakest performer widened. That evidence supports dispersion—different outcomes for different businesses—not a claim that all AI-linked shares move together.
How can you tell whether AI capex is productive?
Compare spending with demand, cash generation and returns rather than treating a larger capex number as inherently bullish.
1. Define the exposure
Classify the company as an infrastructure supplier, cloud provider, AI adopter or a business funding its own build-out. The same dollar of capex has a different meaning for a company selling equipment than for one installing it.
2. Compare capex with operating and free cash flow
Operating cash flow shows cash generated before investment; free cash flow subtracts capital expenditure and other investing needs. A rising capex budget that leaves ample free cash flow may be easier to finance than one that absorbs most internally generated cash. J.P. Morgan Asset Management’s estimate that AI capex could equal 93% of operating cash flow for its five-company group illustrates why this comparison matters.
3. Look for demand evidence
Useful indicators include cloud revenue growth, contracted backlog, utilization, customer commitments and renewal trends. Separate signed or reported demand from management targets and industry forecasts. Higher capex paired with higher revenue estimates has historically received a better market response than spending increases without evidence of sales.

4. Test the return timeline
Ask when capacity is expected to produce revenue, when it should reach target utilization and when cash returns are expected to exceed the cost of capital. Depreciation begins when assets are placed in service, so earnings and free cash flow can diverge during a rapid build-out.
5. Check concentration and obsolescence risk
Large commitments to a small number of customers or to a rapidly changing generation of equipment increase execution risk. A facility that is technically capable but underused can create depreciation and operating costs without matching revenue.

Large AI programs can reduce free cash flow before they generate revenue, making the funding mix and repayment schedule central to the stock story.
Internal funding
Using operating cash avoids immediate dilution and limits interest expense, but it can reduce buybacks, dividends or debt repayment. Investors should compare planned capex with cash available after working-capital needs and existing commitments, not with revenue alone.
Debt and leases
Debt adds scheduled interest and principal payments; leases can commit a company to capacity payments without appearing as conventional owned-asset capex. Both increase sensitivity to utilization and refinancing conditions. J.P. Morgan research describes external financing becoming more visible as the build-out expands.
Equity financing
Issuing shares can preserve cash and credit capacity but dilutes existing holders if the new capital does not produce proportionate earnings. J.P. Morgan reported an USD 85 billion equity raise by Alphabet in June 2026 as an example of financing broadening toward equity; it is not a typical funding choice for every hyperscaler.

Forecast cash generation
J.P. Morgan has projected operating cash flow above USD 900 billion by 2027. That is a forecast, not a realized result, and its usefulness depends on whether revenue and margins grow quickly enough to support the spending trajectory.
J.P. Morgan strategist Dubravko Lakos-Bujas said, “The high-grade market still has substantial capacity to absorb future issuance, although spreads may continue to adjust as supply expectations evolve.” Credit availability can therefore remain open while becoming more expensive or selective.
Why does electricity demand matter to AI-stock analysis?
AI data centers require power as well as computing equipment, so energy availability and cost can become operating constraints.
J.P. Morgan’s Tarek Hamid forecast that data centers could account for 9%–17% of total U.S. electricity demand by 2030, compared with 3%–4% today. This is a forecast, not a measured outcome. For investors, it points to questions about grid connections, power contracts, permitting, cooling and regional electricity prices—factors that can delay capacity or change project economics.
What are the main scenarios when rates and AI spending interact?
The combined effect depends on both the cost of capital and whether spending produces credible demand.
| Scenario | Likely pressure or support | What to examine |
|---|---|---|
| Rates rise; AI demand remains strong | Long-duration valuations may compress, while suppliers and monetizing cloud platforms can retain earnings support | Pricing power, backlog, utilization and interest coverage |
| Rates fall; AI demand remains strong | Lower discount rates can support valuations and cheaper financing can accelerate projects | Whether stock prices already discount the improvement and whether returns exceed new capacity costs |
| Rates rise; AI demand weakens | Most difficult combination: valuations, revenue expectations and financing conditions deteriorate together | Cancellation risk, excess capacity, refinancing dates and covenant headroom |
| Rates fall because growth weakens; AI demand is mixed | Valuation relief may be offset by slower sales; defensive balance sheets can matter more | Revenue revisions, customer concentration and cash preservation |
The BIS has identified the possibility that an AI-investment reversal could interact with financial vulnerabilities and high equity valuations. This is a stress framework, not evidence that a reversal is inevitable.

How reliable are hyperscaler capex totals?
Capex totals are useful demand-side signals but imperfect measures of AI investment. A July 17, 2026 Federal Reserve note says hyperscaler capex includes non-AI investment and may understate total infrastructure spending when companies lease capacity rather than own assets.
Before comparing figures, identify the company group, period, currency, whether the number is actual or estimated, and whether it includes leases. The USD 697 billion five-company estimate cannot be combined mechanically with the broader projections approaching USD 800 billion or exceeding USD 1 trillion because the populations and methods differ.

A consistent checklist helps separate a promising build-out from an expensive race for capacity.
- Exposure: Is the company selling infrastructure, operating a cloud platform, adopting AI or financing its own facilities?
- Valuation: How much long-term growth is already reflected in the share price, and how sensitive is the valuation to the discount rate?
- Spending quality: Is capex growth accompanied by operating cash flow, free-cash-flow plans and credible utilization targets?
- Demand: Are cloud revenue, backlog, contracts or usage data confirming the investment case?
- Funding: What portion is financed internally, with debt, equity or leases, and when do major obligations mature?
- Returns: Does management provide a path from capacity additions to revenue, margins and returns above the cost of capital?
- Physical constraints: Are power, land, cooling, permits and supply-chain capacity available on schedule?
What is the practical conclusion for technology-stock analysis?
Interest rates change the value and financing cost of future growth; AI spending changes both the opportunity and the obligations required to pursue it. Suppliers may gain from orders while buyers absorb years of capital commitments. The most informative comparison is not “high capex versus low capex,” but spending matched against demand, cash flow, balance-sheet capacity, valuation and a realistic monetization timetable. Because rates, earnings expectations and financing can move in opposite directions, the evidence supports scenario analysis rather than a confident forecast for technology stocks as a group.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do rate cuts always lift technology stocks?
No. A cut can support valuations by lowering the discount rate, but it may also signal weaker economic growth or falling earnings expectations. The market’s interpretation and the reason for the cut often matter more than the cut itself.
Is a company’s reported capex the same as its AI investment?
Not necessarily. The Federal Reserve notes that hyperscaler capex includes non-AI projects and can miss leased capacity, so reported capex may overstate some AI spending while understating total infrastructure commitments.

Which balance-sheet warning appears first during an AI build-out?
Watch the relationship between free cash flow, debt service and new commitments. A widening gap can show up through higher net borrowing, reduced buybacks, rising lease obligations or weaker interest coverage before revenue weakness is obvious.
How can I distinguish real AI demand from planned capacity?
Look for reported customer contracts, usage, backlog, cloud revenue and utilization rather than announcements alone. Management targets and industry forecasts are useful context but are not the same as realized customer spending.
