AI data centers have three connected resource footprints. Electricity powers the processors that train and run models, plus cooling, networking, storage and power equipment. Water is used directly in some cooling systems and indirectly to generate electricity and manufacture chips. Land is occupied by data-center sites, but also by power plants, transmission infrastructure and supply chains that support them.

There is no single footprint for “an AI data center.” Workload, hardware density, cooling design, climate, electricity mix and location can change the result. A lower-carbon design can still use more water or require more land, so meaningful comparisons must report all three resources and state the accounting boundary.

What uses electricity in an AI data center?

Servers perform the computing, but they are only one part of a facility’s electricity demand. An AI site also needs storage, networking, cooling and environmental controls, uninterruptible power supplies, backup generation, lighting and other building systems.

Servers and accelerators

Central processing units and accelerators such as graphics processing units perform model training and inference. The International Energy Agency (IEA) says servers account for around 60% of electricity demand in modern data centers on average. That is an average across facility types, not a fixed share for every AI site: a densely packed, accelerator-heavy facility can have a different balance from an enterprise facility with lighter computing loads.

Cooling and environmental control

AI hardware converts nearly all of its electrical input into heat, which must be removed continuously. Cooling’s share can be about 7% of electricity in efficient hyperscale facilities and more than 30% in less-efficient enterprise facilities, according to the IEA. Fans, pumps, chillers, heat exchangers and control systems all add to the facility load.

Power, networking and storage

Power conversion equipment, batteries, generators, distribution systems and lighting consume electricity even though they do not execute model code. Networking moves data among servers and between the facility and users; storage keeps training datasets, model checkpoints and logs available. These supporting systems explain why a server’s rated power is not the same as the data center’s total electricity requirement.

“There is no AI without energy – specifically electricity for data centres.” — International Energy Agency, Energy and AI, published 10 April 2025.

How much electricity do AI data centers use?

Available global totals describe all data centers, not a universally separable AI-only portion. They are estimates or projections tied to a year and a defined boundary, so they should not be presented as the electricity used by every AI model or query.

Measure Value What it means
Global data-center electricity, 2024 About 415 TWh Approximately 1.5% of global electricity consumption, according to the IEA’s 2025 analysis; includes data centers generally, not only AI facilities.
Global data-center electricity, 2025 outlook About 485 TWh IEA 2026 outlook estimate for total data-center consumption.
Global data-center electricity, 2030 outlook About 950 TWh IEA projection for total data centers, around 3% of projected global electricity demand in 2030.

The IEA reported that global data-center electricity demand grew at roughly 12% per year over the preceding five years. Its 2026 outlook says electricity use by AI-focused facilities is growing faster than total data-center consumption, while warning that deployment schedules, supply chains and market conditions make forecasts uncertain. The 485 TWh and 950 TWh figures therefore describe the sector as a whole; they are not a claim that AI alone uses those amounts.

How do data centers use water?

Water accounting has two major layers: water used at the facility and water used upstream to provide electricity and hardware. A cooling-tower system may evaporate water on site, while a power plant may consume water to produce the electricity that runs the servers. Semiconductor and microchip manufacturing adds another upstream use.

Direct cooling water

Some data centers circulate water through cooling equipment or use evaporative systems to reject heat. Climate, cooling architecture and the required temperature and humidity conditions determine how much water is needed. A site in a hot or dry region can face a different water burden from an otherwise similar site in a cool, water-abundant region.

Indirect water from power and chips

Electricity generation can consume water, and chip fabrication uses water-intensive industrial processes. The IEA’s estimates include these upstream sources, which is why a total water footprint can be much larger than the water meter at the data-center fence.

Withdrawals versus consumption

Withdrawals are the amounts taken from surface water or groundwater. Consumption is the portion not returned to the original source, including water lost through evaporation. A facility can therefore report substantial withdrawals while consuming only part of that volume. Any comparison should identify which measure it uses.

How much water do data centers use?

The following figures are estimates with a broad system boundary, not universal rates for every facility.

Estimate Reported amount Boundary and qualification
Illustrative 100 MW US hyperscale facility About 2 million litres per day IEA 2025 illustrative estimate; more than 60% is indirect use, and the figure is not a universal operating rate.
Global data-center water consumption About 560 billion litres per year IEA estimate at the time of its report; includes upstream energy, electricity and hardware-related water.
Global data-center water consumption, 2030 base case About 1,200 billion litres per year IEA base-case projection using the same broad accounting approach.

For 2023, the IEA attributed roughly two-thirds of estimated consumption to primary energy supply and electricity generation, around one-quarter to direct cooling, and the remainder to semiconductor and microchip manufacturing. Those shares explain why replacing an on-site cooling method does not automatically remove the entire water footprint.

The 100 MW example is equivalent, in the IEA’s comparison, to the water use of about 6,500 US households. It is a way to illustrate scale for one facility size and country context, not a conversion that can be applied to every AI installation.

What is the land footprint of AI data centers?

“Land footprint” can refer to two different quantities. The first is the physical area occupied by buildings, substations, cooling equipment, roads and other site infrastructure. The second is the land associated with producing and delivering the electricity and hardware the facility uses. These measures must not be combined or labeled as the same acreage.

Electricity-related land

A 2026 report from the United Nations University Institute for Water, Environment and Health (UNU-INWEH) estimated the land footprint associated with data-center electricity demand at 6,900 square kilometers in 2025 and projected more than 14,500 square kilometers by 2030. The report paired those estimates with global data-center electricity of 448 TWh in 2025 and 945 TWh in 2030.

Those square-kilometer figures describe land linked to electricity demand, including generation and related systems. They are not measurements of the land directly occupied by data-center buildings. Generation technologies, fuel supply, transmission corridors and other infrastructure can make the associated footprint much larger than the fenced site.

Physical siting in the United States

A separate 2026 US Geological Survey (USGS) spatial synthesis examined 11 western US states and Alaska. It identified 771 AI data centers and more than 3,300 power plants in its study area and analyzed proximity to transmission, power plants and Bureau of Land Management lands. The analysis is geographically limited and does not provide a full environmental or regulatory impact assessment, so its counts should not be treated as a global inventory or as direct measurements of occupied acreage.

Why do location and technology change the trade-offs?

The same computing workload can have different resource impacts in different places. A location’s electricity mix affects carbon emissions, water use and land associated with generation. Climate affects cooling demand. Local water stress determines whether a given volume is consequential. Grid capacity and proximity to transmission or generation influence what infrastructure must be built.

Water efficiency can require more energy

The IEA describes a water-versus-energy trade-off: cooling systems that minimize water use can consume more electricity, while systems that save energy may use more water. A design decision should therefore be evaluated with both direct water and electricity metrics rather than a single “efficient” label.

Low carbon does not mean low water or low land

UNU-INWEH lead author Dr. Miriam Aczel said in the 3 June 2026 report announcement: “What surprised us most is how often the choices that look greenest from a carbon perspective end up worse for water or for land.” The point is not that low-carbon electricity is undesirable; it is that carbon, water and land are separate impact dimensions.

Local conditions matter

A national or global average can hide a serious local constraint. A facility may draw from a stressed watershed even when its global water total looks modest, or require new transmission and generation in a region with limited available land. Comparing locations requires local water availability, climate, grid conditions and infrastructure—not just a headline carbon intensity.

How should you compare two AI data centers?

Use a common boundary and place the main metrics side by side. If one disclosure covers only on-site operations and another includes power and chip supply chains, the numbers are not directly comparable until the boundaries are reconciled.

Comparison axis Question to ask
Electricity Does the figure include servers, cooling, networking, storage and power infrastructure, or only IT equipment?
Direct water How much water is withdrawn and how much is consumed at the site?
Indirect water Are electricity generation, primary energy and semiconductor manufacturing included?
Electricity source What generation mix supplies the facility, and what are its associated carbon, water and land effects?
Land Is the number physical site area, an electricity-related footprint, or a supply-chain estimate?
Local context What are the watershed stress, climate, transmission capacity and permitting conditions?

Also record the year, geography, facility type and whether a number is measured, estimated or projected. A forecast should not be compared with a measured operating result without labeling that difference.

Can anyone calculate electricity, water, or land use per AI query?

Not from the available global estimates alone. The sources provide facility-level and system-level figures, while a query’s impact depends on model size, input and output length, hardware, batching, utilization, cooling, location and the electricity supply.

A credible per-query calculation would need a task-specific method that states those assumptions and allocates shared equipment and infrastructure consistently. Without that information, a single universal number would imply precision the evidence does not support.

What should a responsible footprint disclosure include?

A useful disclosure lets readers reconstruct the boundary instead of presenting one combined score. At minimum, it should identify:

  • IT electricity and total facility electricity, with the reporting period.
  • Direct water withdrawals and consumption, separated from indirect water.
  • The electricity-generation and hardware supply-chain processes included in indirect accounting.
  • Physical site area separately from electricity-related or supply-chain land.
  • Facility location, climate, watershed conditions and electricity mix.
  • Whether each figure is measured, estimated or projected, and the method used.

These details make comparisons more honest and show where a proposed efficiency improvement shifts impacts rather than eliminating them.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are all AI data centers the same size as the 100 MW example?

No. The IEA’s 100 MW figure is an illustrative US hyperscale case, not a standard capacity for AI facilities. Smaller enterprise sites and larger hyperscale campuses can have very different electricity and water profiles.

Why can two reports give different global water totals?

They may count different years, regions or processes. A total that includes power generation and chip manufacturing will be higher than an on-site cooling-only figure, even when both are accurately reported.

Does using renewable electricity remove a data center’s land footprint?

No. Electricity still requires generation and transmission infrastructure, and hardware supply chains use land as well. The relevant question is which land boundary and generation technologies a report includes.

What does the USGS AI data-center count tell policymakers?

It shows where identified facilities and power plants are located relative to transmission and public lands in 11 western states and Alaska. It is a spatial planning dataset, not a complete environmental review or a global count.
