AI infrastructure is the fastest-growing part of technology investment, but it is not yet larger than all traditional IT spending. Gartner forecasts worldwide 2026 spending of $822 billion on data-center systems, $287 billion on infrastructure as a service (IaaS), and $6.369 trillion across all IT. IDC’s AI-specific measure is $497 billion for 2026. Those figures use different definitions: data-center systems cover a broad equipment category, IaaS is cloud-service revenue, IDC’s AI-infrastructure total is an AI-focused infrastructure measure, and total IT also includes software, devices, services and communications. The numbers therefore show scale and momentum, not amounts that can simply be added together.

What is the short answer?

AI data-center investment is the growth leader. Gartner’s July 2026 forecast has data-center systems spending rising 62.5% to $822 billion, compared with 29.3% growth for IaaS and 14.2% growth for total IT spending. In absolute terms, however, the wider IT economy remains much larger at $6.369 trillion.

IDC’s narrower AI-infrastructure forecast reaches $497 billion in 2026, after $318 billion in 2025 and $153 billion in 2024. It should not be treated as a direct subset of Gartner’s $822 billion figure: the analysts classify equipment, services and infrastructure boundaries differently. The safest conclusion is that AI is redirecting an unusually large and rapidly increasing share of capital toward computing capacity, while conventional software, devices, services, communications and infrastructure still account for most technology expenditure.

How much will companies spend on AI infrastructure, cloud and IT in 2026?

The following figures are worldwide forecasts for 2026 unless noted otherwise. They describe separate market lenses rather than a single stack of costs.

AI infrastructure within Gartner’s AI total $1.432 trillion Not stated in the supplied forecast Gartner’s AI-infrastructure category inside its broader AI-spending estimate Gartner, 2026

Two cautions matter when reading the table. First, an IaaS dollar is a service sale, while data-center systems and AI infrastructure are equipment-oriented market measures; a provider may purchase equipment and later earn IaaS revenue from it. Second, Gartner’s $1.432 trillion AI-infrastructure figure and IDC’s $497 billion AI-infrastructure figure are not interchangeable because the firms define the category differently.

Why do Gartner’s and IDC’s AI infrastructure numbers differ?

They answer different measurement questions. Gartner’s $822 billion data-center-systems forecast is a broad view of equipment deployed in data centers, whether the workload is AI, conventional cloud, databases or other services. IDC’s $497 billion estimate isolates infrastructure associated with AI, so it is narrower in subject but not necessarily a clean subset of Gartner’s category.

Different boundaries around hardware

One analyst may count servers, accelerators, storage and networking sold into an AI deployment; another may include additional systems, software-linked infrastructure or channels. A component can also be purchased for mixed workloads, making an AI-versus-non-AI split dependent on the analyst’s allocation method.

Equipment is not the same as a cloud service

Cloud IaaS measures what customers pay providers to consume infrastructure. The provider’s underlying servers, networking, buildings and power systems are capital and operating inputs. Comparing IaaS revenue with equipment spending can therefore describe two stages of the same economic chain rather than two independent pools of money.

AI spending is broader than AI infrastructure

Gartner’s $2.596 trillion AI-spending forecast includes more than physical infrastructure. Its $1.432 trillion AI-infrastructure figure is a category within that total. Software, professional services, applications and other AI-related purchases explain why an all-AI number is larger than an infrastructure-only number.

Which category is growing fastest?

On Gartner’s comparable 2026 growth rates, data-center systems are accelerating most quickly, followed by IaaS and then the overall IT market.

Category 2026 forecast Growth Interpretation
Data-center systems $822 billion 62.5% Exceptional expansion in servers, accelerators, networking and related data-center equipment
IaaS $287 billion 29.3% Cloud infrastructure consumption is growing rapidly, but at roughly half the data-center-systems rate
Total IT spending $6.369 trillion 14.2% The broad market is expanding, though legacy and non-AI categories dilute the AI effect

IDC’s historical series also shows a sharp AI-infrastructure step-up: worldwide spending rose from $153 billion in 2024 to $318 billion in 2025, with a forecast of $497 billion in 2026. Those year-to-year amounts are from IDC’s AI-specific methodology, so they are best used to show AI momentum within that series rather than to reconcile the Gartner totals.

Growth rates answer “where are budgets accelerating?” Absolute dollars answer “where is most money still being spent?” A smaller category can grow faster while remaining smaller than the established IT base. Both views are needed to avoid calling AI either insignificant or the whole IT market.

Is AI infrastructure spending bigger than cloud spending?

There is no single yes-or-no comparison until “cloud spending” is defined. Gartner’s 2026 IaaS forecast is $287 billion, while IDC forecasts $497 billion for AI infrastructure. Those are different scopes and cannot be compared as though one were a complete market total and the other a directly corresponding slice.

IaaS is a revenue category for rented infrastructure services. AI infrastructure is an equipment-and-infrastructure category focused on AI workloads. Some AI infrastructure is bought by cloud providers and then monetized through IaaS; other AI infrastructure is installed in private enterprise or government facilities. Conversely, IaaS includes extensive non-AI workloads. The figures can indicate relative scale within each analyst’s framework, but they do not establish that AI infrastructure has surpassed cloud spending overall.

What the comparison can legitimately show

  • Cloud infrastructure demand is substantial and growing at 29.3% in Gartner’s 2026 forecast.
  • AI-focused infrastructure is expanding faster in IDC’s series, from $153 billion in 2024 to a projected $497 billion in 2026.
  • AI workloads can increase both provider capital expenditure and customer cloud bills without those payments being counted in the same category.

How does AI investment compare with traditional IT budgets?

Traditional IT is best represented here by Gartner’s $6.369 trillion worldwide 2026 total, not by a narrow “legacy hardware” line. That total includes software, devices, services, communications and infrastructure. AI infrastructure is therefore a high-growth component of a much broader technology budget, rather than a replacement for every other IT purchase.

Why total IT remains larger

  • Organizations still operate and renew business applications, endpoint fleets, networks, security systems and outsourced services.
  • Communications and connectivity spending sits inside the worldwide IT total but is not automatically AI infrastructure.
  • AI projects often require existing databases, identity systems, integration work, governance and employee services in addition to accelerators and servers.

The 14.2% total-IT growth rate also shows that non-AI technology demand is not disappearing. AI can change the mix of spending—especially inside infrastructure—while the overall budget continues to fund established systems.

Who is paying for the AI data-center build-out?

Current demand is led by hyperscalers and other service providers, according to Gartner and IDC. These companies buy capacity at a scale that allows them to offer AI services, cloud instances and hosted applications to many customers. Enterprises and governments also invest, but the largest near-term procurement wave is concentrated among providers building shared capacity.

Service-provider procurement is becoming a capacity market

IDC forecasts service-provider AI-infrastructure procurement of $401 billion in 2025, rising to $1.45 trillion annually by 2030. The 2030 figure is an annual forecast, not a cumulative five-year total. It describes the expected yearly procurement run rate for service providers at that point.

Enterprise and government buyers have different incentives

Enterprises may purchase AI systems for private inference, regulated data, predictable latency or control over sensitive workloads. Government buyers can prioritize sovereignty, security and continuity. These buyers may use public cloud, colocation or their own facilities, so their spending can appear in different market categories depending on the transaction.

Why the buyer matters to analysts

A hyperscaler’s server purchase is a capital investment intended to support many customers and future demand. An enterprise’s smaller deployment may be tied to one business process. Treating both purchases as equivalent “AI spending” hides differences in utilization, financing, depreciation and revenue models.

What does data-center facility spending add to the equipment bill?

Servers and accelerators are only one layer of an AI site. Facilities need land, buildings, electrical distribution, cooling, backup systems and grid connections. IDC forecasts data-center-facility capital expenditure—excluding IT infrastructure—of $276 billion in 2025 and $655 billion in 2030.

Facility-capex measure Forecast Scope
2025 $276 billion Data-center facilities, excluding IT infrastructure
2030 $655 billion Data-center facilities, excluding IT infrastructure

Because the facility figures exclude IT infrastructure, they should not be added to IDC’s AI-infrastructure total without checking for overlap in the accounting framework and year. They do, however, demonstrate why an AI build-out has a second capital layer beyond chips, servers and networking.

Power and cooling can determine the schedule

AI systems pack more computing into each rack than many earlier deployments. That can make electrical upgrades, cooling design and utility interconnection the schedule-critical parts of a project. A company may have budget approval for equipment but still wait for a suitable powered facility.

Facility investment has a longer life cycle

Buildings and electrical systems are planned over longer horizons than a server refresh. This is why a one-year equipment forecast does not capture the full financial commitment behind a multi-year AI campus or cloud region.

How should finance teams compare AI, cloud and traditional IT spending?

Use a consistent comparison framework before looking at the headline dollars. The following five questions prevent most category errors.

  1. What is the scope? Label the line as facility construction, IT equipment, cloud-service revenue, AI-specific infrastructure or total IT.
  2. Who is the buyer? Separate hyperscaler and service-provider procurement from enterprise and government purchases.
  3. What is the time basis? Distinguish a calendar-year forecast, a one-time project, an annual run rate and a multi-year commitment.
  4. What is the accounting treatment? Identify capital expenditure, operating expense, depreciation, reserved cloud commitments and usage-based charges.
  5. What workload does it support? Record whether capacity is for training, inference, general cloud, databases or mixed use.

Build a like-for-like internal dashboard

A useful company dashboard can have separate columns for owned facilities, owned IT equipment, colocation, cloud IaaS consumption, AI software and personnel or services. Do not place an IaaS invoice beside a server purchase and call the larger number the bigger investment; one is a recurring service expense and the other may be depreciated capital.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Track commitments separately from usage

Reserved cloud capacity, power contracts and long-term equipment orders can create obligations before the related workloads are fully deployed. Report committed value, annual cash cost and actual utilization as separate measures.

Measure capacity, not only dollars

Dollar totals can rise because of higher-performance systems, supply constraints or facility costs. Pair spending with usable accelerator capacity, power availability, utilization and delivered workloads so that a larger budget is not mistaken for proportionally more output.

What mistakes lead to misleading comparisons?

Adding incompatible totals

Adding Gartner’s $822 billion data-center-systems forecast, its $287 billion IaaS forecast and IDC’s $497 billion AI-infrastructure forecast would double-count economic activity and mix incompatible definitions. Present each as a separate indicator and explain possible overlap.

Calling all data-center spending “AI”

Data centers run many workloads. Gartner’s broad systems category includes equipment that may serve conventional enterprise applications, cloud services or AI. Only an AI-specific methodology can support an AI-only conclusion.

Comparing a global total with a company budget

Worldwide forecasts include thousands of buyers and many currencies, while a company budget reflects one organization’s strategy, depreciation policy and geography. Use global figures to understand market direction, not to predict an individual firm’s exact bill.

Confusing annual forecasts with cumulative investment

IDC’s $1.45 trillion service-provider figure for 2030 is annual procurement. It is not the sum of 2025 through 2030. Similarly, an annual facility-capex estimate does not describe the lifetime cost of a site.

Ignoring non-equipment costs

Power delivery, cooling, buildings, networking, software, integration, security and staff can materially affect the economics of an AI service. Equipment-only comparisons understate the resources needed to operate capacity.

What do these forecasts mean for technology strategy?

For cloud providers and hyperscalers, the data supports aggressive capacity planning but also raises utilization and financing risk. Buying accelerators before demand arrives can leave expensive capacity idle; buying too late can limit service availability. Facility and grid lead times make staged expansion and power planning as important as server selection.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For enterprises, the faster growth of AI infrastructure does not mean every company should build a data center. A workload assessment should compare public-cloud consumption, colocation, managed services and owned equipment using the same assumptions for utilization, power, staffing, data movement, security and depreciation.

For CIOs managing conventional IT, the figures argue for protecting essential modernization budgets while funding AI selectively. Replacing a stable system solely to label it “AI-ready” can create cost without a measurable workload benefit. The relevant question is whether the investment improves a defined business process at an acceptable total cost.

For investors and policymakers, the split between equipment and facilities is important. Semiconductor and server demand can surge before buildings and grid connections are ready, while facility construction can continue after a particular equipment cycle changes. Market signals should therefore be read by layer rather than as one undifferentiated AI-spending number.

What is the clearest way to state the bottom line?

AI infrastructure is the fastest-growing investment layer, with Gartner forecasting 62.5% growth for data-center systems in 2026 and IDC projecting AI-infrastructure spending of $497 billion. Cloud IaaS is a large, separately measured service market at $287 billion, while worldwide IT spending remains far larger at $6.369 trillion. Hyperscalers and service providers are leading procurement, and facility construction adds another major capital layer. The figures are most useful when their scope, buyer and time horizon stay attached to every number.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does AI infrastructure spending include electricity and data-center buildings?

Not necessarily. IDC’s facility-capex series explicitly excludes IT infrastructure, while AI-infrastructure measures focus on the AI-related technology layer. Electricity bills, utility upgrades and building costs may be tracked separately from servers and accelerators.

Why can a cloud provider spend more on hardware than it reports as IaaS revenue in a year?

Hardware is purchased ahead of demand and depreciated over time, whereas IaaS revenue is recognized as customers consume services. A provider can therefore make a large capital investment before the corresponding revenue arrives.

Are the Gartner and IDC forecasts estimates of cash actually paid?

They are market-spending forecasts, not a single company’s cash-flow statement. The underlying categories can include purchases, channel transactions or service revenue measured under each analyst’s methodology, so they should not be read as identical accounting totals.

How can a company tell whether its AI project should use owned servers or cloud capacity?

Model the workload’s utilization, growth, data-transfer needs, latency, compliance requirements and expected life. Compare the resulting annualized cost of equipment, facility or colocation, operations and depreciation with the cloud provider’s usage and commitment pricing.
