DNS, firewall, and web-proxy logs can expose command-and-control (C2) when analysts correlate their clues instead of treating any single anomaly as proof. DNS records show what names a host looked up and when; firewall or flow records show where it connected, on which port, and with what timing or volume; proxy records add web-request context. Joined with asset role, resolver policy, and endpoint process telemetry, those records can reveal tunneling, beaconing, unauthorized resolver use, or an unexpected outbound connection. A long domain label, a rare destination, or a periodic connection is an investigative lead—not a verdict that the host is compromised.
The practical method is to establish what normal traffic looks like, hunt suspicious DNS behavior, add firewall and proxy evidence, build a host-and-time timeline, and then validate the activity with endpoint and incident-response data. Visibility varies by deployment: encrypted DNS, direct internet access, missing URL fields, and short retention can leave important gaps.

What can these logs tell you about possible C2?
Each log source observes a different part of a connection. Correlation supplies the context that one source lacks.
| Log source | What it observes | Useful identity or context | Important blind spot | How it corroborates another source |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| DNS | Query and response names, record types, client or resolver identity, and timing | Which host asked for which domain and how often | Encrypted DNS or missing resolver visibility can hide query content | Connects a suspicious name or lookup pattern to a later destination and process |
| Firewall or flow | Source and destination addresses, ports, protocol, connection timing, and potentially byte counts | Which asset reached which endpoint and whether traffic was accepted or denied | Often lacks URL, DNS payload, or application detail; fields depend on the deployment | Tests whether a DNS lookup was followed by an outbound session or beacon-like flow |
| Web proxy | Web destination and request metadata where the traffic traverses the proxy | HTTP/S host, request timing, outcome, and any fields the proxy is configured to retain | Traffic that bypasses the proxy is absent, and HTTPS inspection or logging scope may limit detail | Explains the application-layer request associated with a firewall destination |
| Endpoint and process telemetry | Process creation and, where collected, process-to-DNS or process-to-network associations | Which executable initiated the lookup or connection | Coverage depends on the endpoint agent and operating system | Separates an expected updater from an unknown or unusual process using the same network path |
The U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) incident-response playbook identifies firewall, web-proxy, DNS, network-traffic, cloud-activity, and IDS/IPS logs as useful C2 investigation sources. MITRE ATT&CK detection strategies likewise combine DNS content, network flows, TLS or HTTP metadata, process creation, and connection events rather than relying on one field.

How can DNS logs reveal command and control?
DNS is attractive to adversaries because it is ubiquitous, broadly permitted, and capable of carrying data in names and records. MITRE describes the technique this way: "Adversaries may communicate using the Domain Name System (DNS) application layer protocol to avoid detection/network filtering by blending in with existing traffic." See MITRE ATT&CK T1071.004, DNS.
DNS tunneling and embedded commands
In tunneling, a compromised host encodes identifiers or data into subdomain labels and repeatedly queries an attacker-controlled domain. Responses can carry instructions or small data chunks. A single query can look ordinary, so analysts examine sequences: long or encoded-looking labels, high apparent entropy, changing prefixes, unusual record types, and repeated lookups to a domain that no approved software needs.
Beaconing and sparse lookups
C2 does not have to generate a large DNS spike. Malware may resolve a domain infrequently, at regular intervals, to blend into background traffic. Group queries by client and time, then look for periodic or sparse repetition, especially when a subsequent connection reaches the returned address. Timing is a clue to test, not a universal threshold.
Policy and resolver violations
Most organizations designate recursive resolvers. A workstation sending DNS directly to an external resolver, or reaching an unapproved DNS-over-HTTPS (DoH) or DNS-over-TLS (DoT) service, is a policy signal. It becomes more concerning when the same host also contacts a new destination, runs an unfamiliar process, or produces suspicious query content.
Process and asset context
Compare the querying device with its role and software. A build server, browser, resolver, and industrial controller have different expected DNS patterns. Where endpoint telemetry maps a query to a process image, an unfamiliar executable making encoded, recurring lookups is more informative than the same query from a known updater. MITRE’s DET0400 analytics identify query length, entropy, frequency, process image, and domain reputation as tunable elements, not fixed detection cutoffs.

Do not alert solely because a host generated many DNS requests. MITRE’s Behavioral Detection of DNS Protocol Misuse for Command and Control strategy (DET0934) explicitly cautions: "do not alert solely on high DNS volume." Volume must be combined with content, policy, process, destination, or flow evidence.
What should I look for in firewall and proxy logs?
Use firewall and proxy records to determine whether a DNS clue led to an actual communication path and whether that path fits the asset’s job.
Destination and port
Record the destination IP and domain, protocol, destination port, and connection result. An endpoint connecting to the address returned by a suspicious lookup is a stronger lead than a lookup with no follow-up traffic. Unexpected ports, newly observed destinations, or direct-to-internet connections from assets that normally use a proxy deserve review. A port number alone is not proof: legitimate software can use nonstandard ports, and attackers can use common ones.
Timing and beacon shape
Align connection timestamps with DNS lookups. Repeated sessions at roughly regular intervals, short connections with similar outcomes, or a long-lived channel can indicate beaconing. Preserve the actual intervals rather than reducing them to a single threshold; maintenance jobs and monitoring agents can also be periodic.
Bytes and directionality
Where byte counts are available, compare outbound and inbound volume. A host sending substantially more than it receives may be uploading collected data, while a small, steady exchange may fit command polling. MITRE DET0444 treats outbound-volume imbalance and beacon-like timing as mutable analytics that must be tuned to local traffic, not as validated universal limits.

Proxy request context
For traffic that traverses a web proxy, inspect the recorded host, request method or path when available, response status, timing, and transfer size. Check whether the request belongs to an approved cloud service, software update, or browser session for that user. Do not assume every proxy stores full URLs or decrypted HTTPS content; retention and inspection settings determine what you can see.
How do I correlate DNS queries with outbound connections?
Build a timeline for one client first, then expand to related hosts. The following workflow keeps each inference tied to the evidence actually available.
- Establish coverage and policy. Identify approved recursive resolvers, whether clients can send DNS directly to the internet, whether DoH or DoT is allowed, which assets may have external access, and what fields the firewall and proxy retain. Confirm whether process identity, DNS responses, full URLs, TLS metadata, and byte counts are really collected.
- Group DNS events. Aggregate queries by client, resolver, domain, record type, and time window. Flag unusually long or encoded labels, rare record use, bursts, sparse repetition, new domains, and resolver bypass. Treat length and entropy as heuristics; compare them with the host’s baseline and role.
- Join the network evidence. For each candidate lookup, search firewall or flow records for the returned address and nearby timestamps. Add destination port, protocol, connection outcome, byte counts, and interval pattern. Then search proxy records for the same host, domain, or time range.
- Add endpoint identity. Map the activity to a user, device role, process image, and process start time when available. An unknown process making the connection, a script launching a network client, or a service account using a workstation path changes the investigation priority.
- Validate infrastructure and scope. Check whether the DNS name and destination resolve to the same infrastructure, whether the service is approved, and whether other hosts show the pattern. Domains and IP addresses are key C2 investigation artifacts; preserve their observed values and timestamps rather than relying only on a later reputation lookup.
- Preserve and escalate. Retain the relevant DNS responses, firewall or flow records, proxy entries, endpoint events, and configuration snapshots. If independent signals support the concern, follow your incident-response procedure for containment and deeper collection. If they do not, document the benign explanation and tune the analytic.
A worked correlation example
Suppose a workstation makes a series of long subdomain queries to a newly observed domain. DNS shows the workstation used the corporate resolver; flow data then records short outbound sessions to the returned address every few minutes on a port not used by that workstation’s approved applications. Proxy records show no browser request, while endpoint data attributes the connection to an unsigned executable launched from a user-writable directory. None of these facts alone proves compromise, but together they justify isolating the process, collecting the host, and checking for the same domain or executable on other systems.
Can DNS-over-HTTPS hide C2 traffic?
Yes. DoH and DoT encrypt query contents from passive network observers, so a conventional DNS sensor may see neither the requested name nor the response. Encryption does not make the activity invisible: resolver destination, connection timing, TLS or HTTP metadata, endpoint process identity, and policy violations can still provide evidence.
Detecting resolver bypass
Compare observed outbound connections with the organization’s approved resolver list. A client that normally sends DNS to an internal resolver but instead reaches an external DoH or DoT endpoint should be examined, particularly if the process is not an approved browser or security agent. MITRE DET0934 focuses on unauthorized resolver use or unapproved encrypted DNS combined with suspicious content, process, or destination evidence.

Adapting to enterprise and ICS architectures
DET0934 is written for industrial-control-system detection and should be adapted to your architecture. An ICS network may have tightly constrained resolvers and very different expected traffic from an enterprise user network. Apply the same principle—policy plus behavioral and process evidence—without copying thresholds or assumptions between environments.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How do I separate a useful lead from a false positive?
Start with a documented baseline for software, resolver architecture, approved cloud services, maintenance windows, and asset roles. Then test each anomaly against that baseline.
- Known updater or agent: verify the executable, vendor ownership, signing status, scheduled task, and expected destination rather than dismissing it solely because its DNS labels are long.
- Shared hosting or cloud service: a reputation result may describe the provider, not the specific tenant or path. Match the exact domain, response, process, and request timing.
- Planned maintenance: compare the event with change tickets, deployment windows, and the operator or service account responsible.
- Resolver misconfiguration: confirm DHCP, endpoint, browser, and security-agent settings before treating external DNS as malicious.
- Sensor artifact: check clock synchronization, NAT mapping, dropped records, and retention gaps so that an apparent sequence is not created by incomplete telemetry.
No single feature, threat-reputation result, or anomaly establishes C2. Confidence rises when independent evidence agrees: suspicious DNS content or policy, a matching destination and timing pattern, an unexpected process, and behavior inconsistent with the asset’s role.

Which MITRE ATT&CK analytics are useful starting points?
MITRE’s material provides detection ideas rather than universal signatures. DET0400 (last modified May 12, 2026) discusses DNS query length, entropy, frequency, process image, and reputation. DET0444 (last modified May 12, 2026) covers flow-based indicators such as outbound-volume imbalance and beacon-like timing. DET0934 (created and modified September 26, 2026) addresses behavioral DNS misuse, including unauthorized resolvers and encrypted-DNS policy violations. The DNS technique page T1071.004 was last modified September 3, 2026. Tune these analytics to local baselines and record which fields your sensors actually provide.
MITRE’s data-component guidance, including DC0085 (last modified October 13, 2026), helps map collection to the events needed for DNS and network-connection detections. Tools such as packet analyzers, network-monitoring platforms, and endpoint agents can collect or analyze these events, but the sources do not establish that a particular product is required.
Best Value
What are the most common investigation mistakes?
- Using volume as the verdict: high query counts can come from legitimate software; combine volume with content, timing, policy, and process evidence.
- Ignoring the resolver path: encrypted or direct DNS can remove the very fields the hunt depends on, so first map approved and observed resolver routes.
- Assuming every proxy has full URLs: schema and HTTPS inspection vary; state exactly which metadata was captured.
- Pivoting only by IP: cloud and shared infrastructure can host many services. Preserve the domain, certificate or HTTP metadata when available, and process context.
- Forgetting time accuracy: compare synchronized timestamps and account for NAT, asynchronous logging, and clock drift.
- Blocking before preserving evidence: an immediate block may stop a channel but erase useful context. Capture the relevant records and follow the organization’s containment procedure.
The strongest case is a reproducible timeline: client identity, DNS query and response, resolver path, destination and port, proxy request if present, process identity, and the asset’s expected behavior. That timeline lets responders explain why the activity is suspicious and what additional collection is justified.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can a legitimate application produce long or high-entropy DNS labels?
Yes. CDNs, telemetry systems, software updates, and service-discovery mechanisms can generate labels that look encoded. Verify the executable, documented service behavior, ownership of the domain, and whether the timing and destination match the application’s normal operation.

A free scan shows the junk files, broken settings and background clutter dragging Windows down - then fixes them in one click.Free scan · Windows 10 & 11Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteWhat if the firewall sees an IP address but no domain name?
Use the DNS response observed closest in time, NAT translations, proxy records, TLS metadata, and endpoint connection events to associate the address with a name or process. If that mapping cannot be established, keep the IP and timestamp as an artifact rather than guessing the domain.
Should analysts block an unfamiliar resolver immediately?
Treat an unapproved resolver as a policy and investigation signal. Preserve the associated process, flow, and endpoint evidence first, then apply the organization’s containment procedure; an emergency block may be appropriate when other independent indicators show active harm.
How does asset criticality change the investigation?
The same lookup pattern has different urgency on a domain controller, production server, user laptop, or safety-critical controller. Prioritize assets whose compromise could affect essential services, and compare their allowed communications with the stricter baseline expected for that role.
