Teams keep AI-generated code safe by treating it as code they own, not as trusted output from a tool. A qualified human must understand and approve every change before production. The team should record where AI helped, review high-risk paths more deeply, run the same automated security gates used for other code, and reject changes that add unexplained complexity or unverified dependencies. For coding agents, the controls also include least-privilege credentials, sandboxing, approved data boundaries, and review of the agent’s instructions and tool integrations.

This approach matters because scanners can find many mechanical defects but cannot decide whether authorization is correct for a particular business rule, whether a data flow violates the threat model, or whether a new abstraction fits the system. Secure delivery therefore combines deterministic checks with contextual human review.

What does secure, maintainable AI-generated code require?

AI-assisted code must meet the same security expectations as code written entirely by people. The UK Home Office engineering guidance states: “AI-assisted outputs MUST be reviewed and approved by a human before reaching production.” That approval is meaningful only when the reviewer can explain what the code does, what assumptions it makes, and how it behaves when inputs, dependencies, or external services fail.

Use five controls together:

  • Ownership: a named, qualified engineer accepts accountability for the change.
  • Traceability: prompts or AI assistance are visible through normal commits, pull requests, review notes, and test evidence where the team’s policy requires it.
  • Risk-based review: sensitive code and delivery configuration receive deeper scrutiny than low-risk presentation changes.
  • Deterministic gates: static analysis, dependency analysis, secret scanning, tests, and policy checks run consistently in CI.
  • Maintainability checks: the change follows established architecture, uses understandable names and boundaries, and does not create needless abstraction or duplication.

No single control proves that generated code is safe. A clean scan is evidence that particular automated rules passed; it is not evidence that the business behavior is correct.

How should a team set its AI coding policy before anyone writes code?

Write a short policy that answers who may use AI, with which data, in which environments, and who approves the result. OWASP SAMM guidance for AI-assisted development and UK Home Office engineering standards both emphasize approved tools, accountability, training, and data restrictions.

Define approved tools and data classes

List approved assistants and the environments in which they may run. Classify data that must never be sent to an external model, such as credentials, private keys, regulated personal data, customer records, unreleased vulnerability details, and proprietary source that the organization is not permitted to disclose. Explain whether prompts, code snippets, telemetry, and retained conversations may be used for model training under the tool’s terms. If a tool’s data handling cannot be established, prohibit that data from being entered.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Set the accountability rule

State that the author and approving reviewer remain responsible for the merged code. The author must be able to describe the behavior and evidence behind the change; “the model suggested it” is not an acceptance rationale. Require a second reviewer for sensitive components or for changes that alter security controls.

Prepare AI-readable engineering guidance

Give developers and assistants current, machine-readable descriptions of architecture, shared security services, coding conventions, threat models, and reference components. A documented authentication service, for example, is safer than asking a model to invent token validation in every feature. Train reviewers to spot generated code that bypasses those patterns, wraps a simple operation in unnecessary layers, or introduces a competing implementation.

Control coding agents

For agents that can run commands or edit repositories, use a sandbox, least-privilege credentials, short-lived tokens, and an allowlist of tools and directories. Review agent configuration, instruction files, hooks, and tool integrations as if they were source code. Keep production credentials and unrestricted network access out of the agent’s default environment.

How should an engineer review an AI-generated pull request?

Review the change as a security-sensitive design decision, not as a proofreading exercise. Keep the diff small enough to understand, and require the author to explain it before approval.

  1. Read the requirement and threat model first. Identify the intended behavior, protected assets, trust boundaries, identities, and failure consequences. Note which existing security controls the change is expected to use.
  2. Map the diff. List changed components, new entry points, data stores, integrations, dependencies, and build or deployment files. OWASP’s secure code review method recommends a diff-based approach that looks for changed attack surface and possible regressions.
  3. Trace inputs to effects. Follow request data through parsing, validation, authorization, business logic, persistence, logging, queues, and responses. Check both normal and malformed inputs.
  4. Check security decisions in context. Confirm authentication and authorization at every relevant boundary, correct cryptographic use, safe error handling, output encoding, and protection against injection, request forgery, path traversal, and unsafe deserialization where applicable.
  5. Inspect failure and recovery paths. Ask what happens when a dependency times out, a token is expired, a database write partially succeeds, or a retry is repeated. Generated code often handles the happy path more completely than rollback, idempotency, or denial cases.
  6. Verify tests against requirements. Tests should demonstrate authorization boundaries, invalid input behavior, secrets handling, race or concurrency assumptions, and important business rules. A high line-coverage number does not replace those cases.
  7. Require an explanation. If the author cannot explain why the code is correct and how it fits the architecture, return the change for simplification or further investigation.

Questions every reviewer should ask

  • What new capability or trust relationship does this diff create?
  • Which data is confidential, and where can it be copied, logged, cached, or returned?
  • Can an untrusted caller influence a privileged operation?
  • What happens when validation, authorization, a dependency, or a feature flag fails?
  • Does the implementation use an existing shared control rather than a new home-grown variant?
  • Can another engineer maintain this without consulting the model or the original prompt?

Which AI-generated code needs the deepest review?

Increase review depth when a change affects a security boundary, a high-value asset, or the software supply chain. OWASP review guidance identifies the following areas as priority targets.

Area What to verify Useful evidence
Authentication and session handling Identity verification, token lifetime, session invalidation, recovery flows, and account enumeration behavior Threat-model notes, negative tests, and review by an owner of the identity component
Authorization Object- and function-level access checks, tenant isolation, default-deny behavior, and privilege transitions Permission matrix, boundary tests, and representative unauthorized requests
Cryptography Approved algorithms, key storage and rotation, nonce or IV handling, and authenticated encryption Use of the organization’s crypto library and security-owner approval
Input parsing and output handling Schema validation, canonicalization, size limits, encoding, and injection resistance Fuzz or property tests, limits, and safe error responses
Dependencies Package identity, provenance, vulnerabilities, license, maintenance, and architectural fit Lockfile diff, software-composition scan, and approval for new packages
Trust-boundary changes Network calls, file access, queues, webhooks, plugins, and movement between privilege domains Data-flow diagram and explicit threat review
Build and deployment Pipeline triggers, permissions, scripts, downloads, secrets, container images, and third-party actions Human approval, pinned references, and isolated test execution

Low-risk formatting or documentation changes can use the ordinary review path, but do not infer low risk from the fact that a model produced only a few lines. A short change to a pipeline, parser, or authorization policy can have a large effect.

Which automated checks belong in CI?

Run the same baseline checks for AI-assisted and human-written code, and make the thresholds deterministic. OWASP guidance specifically calls for static analysis, software-composition or dependency analysis, and secret scanning across code regardless of origin.

Static analysis and tests

Compile with warnings treated according to the project’s policy, run linters and type checks, execute unit and integration tests, and include security rules for the languages and frameworks in use. Add regression tests for every confirmed defect. Static analysis is effective for repeatable patterns such as unsafe APIs, tainted data flows, and suspicious configuration, but it cannot validate a domain-specific authorization decision by itself.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Dependency and secret scanning

Scan manifests and lockfiles for known vulnerabilities, license conflicts, typosquatting indicators, and abandoned or unmaintained packages. Scan the full diff and repository history where appropriate for API keys, private keys, tokens, and connection strings. Rotate a credential immediately if it may have been exposed; deleting it from the latest commit does not invalidate a leaked secret.

Policy gates and reproducibility

Block merges when required checks fail, when a dependency is not approved, when a secret is detected, or when a protected file lacks the required reviewer. Keep tool versions and rule sets reproducible so that the same change does not pass or fail unpredictably. Record results with the build artifact and retain the approval trail.

How can teams verify AI-suggested dependencies and architecture?

Never assume that a package, API, or configuration named by a model exists or is appropriate. Confirm the exact package identity in the language’s official registry, inspect its repository and release history, and compare it with the project’s supported versions.

Use a dependency decision record

For each new package, record its purpose, transitive dependencies, vulnerability status, license, provenance, release activity, ownership, and removal plan. Prefer an existing approved library or an established internal service when it provides the needed capability. A model may suggest a plausible-looking package with a similar name, an obsolete API, or a package that silently executes installation scripts.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Check architectural fit

Compare generated code with established layering, error types, logging policy, data-access patterns, and shared security services. Reject parallel implementations of authentication, encryption, validation, or authorization unless there is a documented reason. Fewer concepts and narrower interfaces usually make future review easier than a flexible abstraction built for hypothetical requirements.

Make maintainability testable

  • Require names that describe domain behavior rather than model-generated generic terms.
  • Prefer small functions with explicit inputs, outputs, and side effects.
  • Remove duplicated helpers and unused options before merge.
  • Document non-obvious security invariants and operational assumptions.
  • Keep generated comments only when they explain a durable design decision; do not preserve speculative prose.
  • Update runbooks, API contracts, schemas, and migration notes when behavior changes.

Why are CI/CD files and scripts especially sensitive?

Build and delivery configuration can turn a benign-looking suggestion into code execution with access to source, signing keys, registries, or production environments. OWASP secure-coding guidance recommends heightened human review for these files.

Inspect commands and downloads

Look for shell commands assembled from untrusted values, remote scripts fetched without integrity verification, package lifecycle hooks, dynamic imports, and tools installed at build time. Prefer pinned versions and verified checksums over “latest” downloads. Run untrusted build steps in isolated workers without production credentials.

Limit permissions and triggers

Check which branches, pull requests, tags, or external events can start a workflow. Ensure a job receives only the permissions it needs, and separate untrusted pull-request jobs from jobs that can access secrets or publish artifacts.

How should teams record AI assistance and approvals?

Use ordinary engineering records instead of a separate, informal log. A pull request can identify that AI assistance was used, name the responsible author and reviewer, link the relevant tests and scans, and explain any generated dependency or architectural choice. The Home Office gives an AI-assisted commit marker as one possible convention; the exact syntax can be chosen by the team.

Retain the review evidence with the change: the diff, test results, scan versions, dependency decision, exceptions, and approvals. If a reviewer grants an exception, state its scope, owner, expiry or reassessment date, and compensating control. Traceability lets the team investigate an incident without guessing which output was accepted or why.

How can review scale without making every change slow?

Use risk tiers and route work to people with the right expertise. The goal is not to give every line the same ceremony; it is to spend attention where a mistake can cross a trust boundary or compromise a valuable asset.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Risk tier Typical changes Minimum control
Routine Documentation, harmless presentation changes, or isolated refactoring with no boundary impact Normal peer review, tests, and automated gates
Elevated New dependency, data-store access, external integration, parser, or permissioned feature Owner review, threat and data-flow check, dependency evidence, and negative tests
Critical Authentication, authorization, cryptography, secrets, CI/CD, deployment, signing, or production infrastructure Trained security or component owner, independent human approval, focused tests, and explicit release evidence

Route sensitive paths to trained owners, cap the size of generated pull requests, and ask for smaller follow-up changes when a diff mixes unrelated work. Turn recurring review findings into lint rules, tests, approved reference patterns, and updated agent instructions. This converts scarce expert attention into repeatable protection without eliminating judgment where context is essential.

What should a complete release checklist contain?

Before release, the responsible engineer should be able to answer each item below with a link to evidence in the team’s systems:

  • The intended behavior, threat model, and affected trust boundaries are documented.
  • A qualified human understands the implementation and has approved it.
  • AI assistance is recorded according to policy, and the source of any generated dependency or configuration is known.
  • Static analysis, tests, dependency analysis, and secret scanning passed the current CI thresholds.
  • Authentication, authorization, input handling, data flows, logging, and failure paths were reviewed in context.
  • New packages were checked for identity, provenance, vulnerabilities, licensing, maintenance, and architectural fit.
  • Build and deployment changes were reviewed for downloads, scripts, triggers, permissions, credentials, and immutable action or image references.
  • Agent credentials, sandboxes, network access, instruction files, and tool integrations are appropriately restricted.
  • Exceptions have an owner, compensating control, and review date.
  • Operational documentation, rollback steps, and monitoring match the released behavior.

What role does NIST guidance play?

NIST announced SP 800-218A, a Secure Software Development Framework community profile with additions for AI model development, on July 26, 2024. It is a profile and publication milestone, not a claim that AI-generated application code is automatically secure. Teams can use it alongside their existing SSDF practices to organize governance, provenance, testing, and risk management for AI-related development.

The practical rule remains unchanged: use recognized secure-development practices, adapt them to AI-specific data and agent risks, and retain a human decision-maker who understands the resulting software.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can a developer merge AI-generated code after running a security scanner?

No. A scanner can establish that its configured rules found no violation, but it cannot prove that business authorization, data use, or architectural choices are correct. Human approval is still required before production.

Should teams ban AI coding agents from production repositories?

A blanket ban is not the only option. Teams can allow narrowly scoped use with sandboxes, short-lived credentials, restricted tools and directories, protected branches, and mandatory human review; unrestricted agents with production access create a much larger risk.

How do you handle a vulnerability found in generated code after release?

Triage it like any other vulnerability: contain or disable the affected path, rotate exposed credentials, patch and test the defect, and assess related generated changes for the same pattern. Then add a regression test or automated rule so the lesson is applied to future work.

Is disclosing AI assistance to users or customers legally required?

Requirements vary by jurisdiction, contract, sector, and the kind of software involved. Your internal policy should define engineering traceability, while legal or compliance owners determine any external disclosure obligations.
