The quickest test is to remove the AI and see what remains. A teaching-oriented tutor asks your child to explain an approach, notices the specific misconception behind an error, and offers a hint or next step that leaves the child responsible for the work. After a session, close the tutor: ask the child to explain the idea in their own words and solve a new, similar problem. Success only while the AI is present shows assisted performance, not necessarily learning. Independent explanation and transfer are stronger practical signs that the tutor taught something.
What does an AI tutor do differently when it is teaching?
A tutor is teaching when it improves the learner’s thinking, not merely the answer on the screen. In practice, that means eliciting reasoning, diagnosing mistakes, pacing help, and gradually returning responsibility to the child. Stanford SCALE’s 2026 review found more promising outcomes for tools with pedagogical guardrails—such as hints and guided reasoning—than for general-purpose chatbots that provide solutions directly. There is no validated parent scoring system that can label every product. Treat the following as observable signals. A tutor may appropriately show a worked example at the beginning of a lesson; the important question is whether it then creates a chance for the child to practice and take over.
It asks before it tells
Look at the first response after your child asks for help. A coaching interaction might ask, “What have you tried?” “Which information in the problem matters?” or “What do you think the next step is?” A polished solution delivered immediately can finish the exercise while bypassing the reasoning the child needs to develop.

It responds to the actual mistake
Have your child deliberately make, or show you, a common error. A teaching system should identify what went wrong and give a relevant hint rather than overwrite the work with a correct result. Ask your child, “What changed in your thinking after that hint?” If the child can name the misconception and the next move, the interaction was more instructionally useful than simply seeing the right answer.
It leaves the next step to the learner
Effective scaffolding keeps a task within the learner’s zone of proximal development: enough support to move forward, but not so much that the learner’s productive effort disappears. Watch whether the tutor pauses after a hint, asks the child to try, and reduces help as the child improves. A system that completes every step may produce a correct page with little durable learning.

Learning is stronger when a child can use an idea in a new form. Ask for an explanation without looking at the chat, then present a fresh problem that uses the same principle but changes the numbers, wording, or context. Stanford’s review notes that performance with AI available and performance after AI is removed can differ; durable learning and transfer remain important open questions. Stanford SCALE Initiative, 2026
How can I test whether my child learned without the AI?
Use a short, repeatable “close-and-transfer” check after selected sessions. It takes only a few minutes and separates completion with assistance from independent understanding.

- Close the tutor. End the chat or put the device away before asking questions. Do not let the child scroll back for the answer.
- Ask for a child-language explanation. “Explain why this method works” is more revealing than “Did you understand?” Listen for the key relationship, not memorized wording.
- Ask for one worked step. Give a blank sheet and have the child start a similar problem. Resist supplying prompts unless the child is completely stuck.
- Change the surface features. Use a new example with different values, a diagram instead of a paragraph, or a real-life context. Transfer shows whether the underlying idea survived the original exercise.
- Record the kind of help needed. Note whether the child needed a reminder of a definition, a hint about strategy, or a complete solution. A declining level of help over several sessions is more informative than one correct answer.
Do not treat one missed transfer problem as proof that the tutor failed. Fatigue, gaps in prerequisite knowledge, language difficulty, or an overly large jump in complexity can all affect the check. Look for a pattern across several tasks and subjects.
What should parents watch during an AI-tutoring session?
Engagement rather than button pressing
A child can appear active while selecting suggested replies or copying generated work. Watch for original explanations, written steps, and attempts before requesting help. Coaching features cannot help if the student rarely uses them or interacts only by choosing canned answers.

The tutor should use the child’s answer to choose the next prompt. Generic encouragement (“Try again”) is weaker than a response tied to the error (“You subtracted the denominator; what operation does the fraction bar represent?”). Ask the child to point to the exact sentence or hint that helped.
A gradual release of responsibility
At the start, a tutor may model a strategy. Later, it should ask the child to select the strategy, complete more steps, and check the result. If the same level of hand-holding continues after several sessions, the tool may be functioning as an answer engine.

Emotional and social signals
Notice whether the child becomes more willing to explain mistakes or instead anxious about pleasing the system. An AI cannot replace encouragement, relationship, or a teacher’s knowledge of a child’s broader circumstances. Stop a session if the child encounters unsafe, embarrassing, or personally intrusive prompts and involve a trusted adult.
What does current evidence say about AI tutors?
Evidence is encouraging in some designs but does not justify assuming that any AI tutor teaches. Stanford SCALE’s 2026 review examined a repository of more than 800 AI-and-K–12 papers and identified 20 high-quality causal studies of effects on students or educators. It reports that student performance often rises during AI-assisted tasks, while results on assessments completed without AI are mixed. Most studies are short term, with gaps in long-term learning, equity, student wellness, and U.S. K–12 classroom evidence. The count of 20 reflects that review’s repository and methods, not a complete census of every study. Stanford SCALE Initiative, 2026

What happened in a two-year Tennessee school trial?
A Stanford SCALE summary of an NBER cluster-randomized trial covered 18 Tennessee middle schools using Khan Academy with Khanmigo configured to coach rather than give answers. Assignment increased math achievement by 1.3 national percentile ranks per term. The summary says the gains resembled Khan Academy practice without AI assistance, and that students used the coach infrequently. These are results for that program, age group, subject, and school setting—not an expected gain for every child or product. Stanford SCALE study summary, 2026
| Measure in the Tennessee trial | Reported result | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| Schools and duration | 18 middle schools; two years | A school-level experiment, not a home-use guarantee |
| Achievement effect | 1.3 national percentile ranks per term | Average assignment effect in that setting |
| Students trying the coach | 96% tried it at least once | Access did not mean sustained use |
| Median practice-day use | Messages on one-third of practice days | Many available days had no interaction |
| Use during errors | Messages in 17% of exercise sessions with an error | The coach was present in a minority of error opportunities |
The National Student Support Accelerator’s August 20, 2026 brief describes human-led tutoring as having a more established evidence base than AI-only tutoring, whose effectiveness it characterizes as unknown. It emphasizes that tutoring depends on consistent engagement, instructional quality, responsiveness to student information, and human relationships; AI outcomes depend on how a system is integrated into those conditions. How should I compare two AI tutoring tools?
Compare the learning interaction, not the marketing label. A tool calling itself a “coach” may still reveal answers too quickly, while a general chat interface can be used productively if an adult sets strict prompts and checks work. Use these six axes when trying tools with the same lesson.
| Comparison question | What a stronger fit looks like | What to test at home |
|---|---|---|
| Does it elicit reasoning? | It asks for an approach, evidence, or a next step before presenting a solution. | Submit an incomplete attempt and see whether the first reply is a question or a finished answer. |
| Does it diagnose errors? | Hints refer to the child’s specific misconception and leave a manageable step. | Use a known error and ask the child to explain the hint. |
| Can the child work afterward? | Help decreases as competence increases; independent performance is possible. | Run the close-and-transfer check with a new problem. |
| Does it fit the learner? | Language, difficulty, subject sequence, and curriculum match the child’s age and class. | Ask the classroom teacher whether the method and notation align. |
| Will the child actually use it? | The interface supports sustained, effortful practice rather than only suggested choices. | Review weekly activity and the proportion of sessions involving the child’s own work. |
| Can an adult oversee it safely? | A parent or teacher can review progress, question questionable responses, and find help when the child is stuck. | Check data controls, safety settings, interaction logs, and escalation options before regular use. |
These criteria are grounded in the Stanford review and the National Student Support Accelerator’s guidance; they are decision aids, not product rankings. Neither source endorses a particular vendor. Stanford SCALE Initiative and National Student Support Accelerator

Before a child uses a direct-to-student system, find out what information it collects, how long chats are retained, who can read them, and whether the account can be deleted. Avoid entering diagnoses, passwords, precise location, or other sensitive family information unless the school or provider has a clear, trustworthy reason and protection for it.
- Adult visibility: Can you review sessions or progress without reading every private thought? Is there a teacher dashboard or an export you can inspect?
- Safety guardrails: What happens when a child asks about self-harm, abuse, sexual content, bullying, or an illegal activity? A system should direct the child to a trusted adult or emergency support rather than improvise counseling.
- Accuracy controls: Can the tutor show its work, identify uncertainty, and accept correction? Children should be taught that fluent text can still be wrong.
- Curriculum alignment: Does its notation and method match the child’s classroom? Conflicting methods can create confusion even when both are mathematically valid.
- Human backup: Is there a teacher, parent, or tutor who can take over when the child is stuck? The National Student Support Accelerator specifically recommends examining integration, privacy safeguards, student-safety guardrails, and unmonitored interaction. How can families build a routine that favors learning?
Set expectations before opening the tool. Tell the child that asking for a hint is encouraged, copying a solution is not, and the final check will happen with the device closed. Choose a modest number of exercises so there is time to explain and transfer rather than racing through a worksheet.
Best Value
- Start with an attempt. Require the child to write or say a first idea before requesting AI help.
- Request constrained help. Prompts such as “Ask me one question at a time; do not give the final answer” make the desired interaction explicit, though they cannot guarantee compliance.
- Pause after each hint. The child completes the next step before asking again.
- Finish offline. Use the close-and-transfer check and keep a brief note of the help level.
- Review weekly. Look for independent explanations, decreasing prompts, and genuine use. If the child is avoiding effort, confused by conflicting methods, or disclosing sensitive information, pause AI use and consult the teacher.
A tutor can be one component of a learning plan, but it should not be the only source of instruction for a child who needs feedback, motivation, or a relationship with a skilled adult.
What are the clearest warning signs that an AI is only giving answers?
- The first reply to nearly every question is a complete solution.
- The child cannot explain why the steps work once the chat is closed.
- Hints repeat generic encouragement instead of addressing the specific error.
- The child copies text, selects suggested responses, or skips written work.
- Difficulty does not adjust, and the tutor keeps doing the task after the child is capable of the next step.
- There is no practical way for an adult to review use, correct misinformation, or respond to a safety concern.
One worked example or a direct answer is not automatically a failure; modeling can be appropriate when a learner has no starting point. The warning sign is a consistent pattern in which the child completes assignments with the AI but cannot explain, adapt, or reproduce the idea independently.
What is the parent’s bottom-line decision?
Keep an AI tutor in the routine only when you can observe effortful interaction and verify learning after it is removed. Favor systems and settings that ask before telling, diagnose errors, provide the smallest useful hint, and release responsibility. Then judge the whole arrangement—actual use, adult oversight, privacy and safety, curriculum fit, and access to human help—not the software’s answer accuracy alone.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can an AI tutor be useful for homework if it sometimes gives the answer?
Yes, a worked example can model a method when a child has no entry point. Require the child to annotate why each step works, then solve a related problem without the tutor; that follow-up determines whether the example became instruction or a shortcut.
How often should a parent check an AI tutoring session?
During the first several sessions, observe directly so you can see whether the child attempts work before asking and whether hints are specific. Once the pattern is reliable, a brief weekly review of logs, completed work, and an offline transfer problem can catch drift without turning every study period into surveillance.
What should I do if the tutor’s explanation conflicts with the teacher’s method?
Pause the disputed method and save the exact exchange. Ask the teacher which definition or notation the class is using, then adjust the tutor’s prompts or disable that lesson until the approaches are reconciled; a mathematically valid alternative can still be harmful if it undermines the current curriculum.
Does more time in an AI tutor mean more learning?
No. Usage is only meaningful when the child is doing cognitive work. Track the proportion of sessions with an original attempt, a useful hint, and an independent follow-up rather than minutes or message counts alone.
