Raise the concern through a channel that can change the work—your manager, HR, a health and safety representative, a union or other worker representative, or a formal grievance process—and describe the effect in measurable terms. Explain which tasks changed, what the AI system does, how it affects pace, hours, breaks, staffing, support or safety, and what review or adjustment you want. Ask for a response and keep a dated record.

The right escalation route depends on your country and the issue. Workload and safety problems generally belong in a workplace risk-management or worker-representation process; an automated employment decision may also involve privacy, data-protection or discrimination rules. If an internal route is unsuitable or does not resolve the problem, an independent worker adviser, union, labor authority, safety regulator or privacy authority may be able to help.

What counts as a workload concern caused by AI?

A concern is strongest when it identifies a change in work and its consequences, rather than objecting to “AI” in the abstract. An algorithm can increase demands even when it automates part of a job: the remaining cases may be harder, the system may set an unrealistic pace, or employees may spend extra time checking inaccurate outputs.

Safe Work Australia lists several relevant hazards: technology that sets a pace without enough time, poorly designed or outdated systems that increase workload, and routine work being automated while the remaining tasks become more complex or cognitively demanding. Similar effects can appear as longer shifts, missed breaks, more monitoring, less discretion, conflicting targets or inadequate training.

Describe the change in observable terms

  • Tasks: identify what was added, removed or shifted to you after the system was introduced.
  • Time and pace: compare average handling time, queue targets, overtime, after-hours work and time available for breaks before and after the change.
  • Quality and rework: record how often you correct, verify or explain an AI output, and whether errors create duplicate work.
  • Support and control: note missing training, unclear instructions, inability to override a recommendation or pressure to accept an output you cannot check.
  • Health and safety: describe fatigue, stress, repetitive strain, unsafe shortcuts or other physical and psychological effects.

Use examples with dates and, where lawful, retain schedules, instructions, workload reports or anonymized error logs. Do not copy confidential customer or patient data into personal accounts. The goal is evidence that lets someone assess the hazard and test a remedy.

Which workplace channel should I use?

Start with the person or body that can alter the workload, staffing, targets or system controls. You can use more than one channel when the problem spans safety, employment decisions and data use.

Channel Best fit What to ask for Practical limitation
Manager or team lead Immediate workload, targets, training, staffing or workflow changes A documented review, temporary relief, revised targets, human checks or training The manager may not control the vendor, model or company-wide policy.
HR or formal grievance route Repeated unresolved concerns, unfair treatment, retaliation or an employment decision A case number, written response, investigation and review by an impartial person Policies and confidentiality protections vary; read the procedure and deadlines.
Health and safety representative or committee Stress, fatigue, unsafe pace, ergonomic risks or inadequate risk controls A hazard assessment with worker consultation and monitored controls Terminology and statutory powers differ by jurisdiction.
Union or other worker representative Collective workload changes, bargaining issues, discipline or fear of retaliation Representation in meetings, collective evidence and advice on rights Eligibility, membership rules and response times differ.
Privacy or data-protection contact Worker monitoring, profiling, opaque data use or an automated decision about you What data was used, the purpose, retention, human review and correction Not every AI-assisted decision is legally “solely automated”; local law controls.
External labor, safety or privacy authority Internal channels fail, are unsafe to use or a legal breach may be involved Advice on jurisdiction, evidence, deadlines and available remedies Authorities usually have defined mandates and may not resolve ordinary workload disputes.

Compare channels on five questions: who can change the work; whether the issue is workload or safety, an individual decision, privacy or discrimination; what confidentiality and anti-retaliation protections apply locally; whether the route is accessible and produces a response; and whether a representative or regulator is more suitable than a direct manager.

How do I tell my manager that AI has increased my workload?

Use a short, factual request for a review. A manager is more likely to act when the problem, evidence and proposed control are clear.

  1. Request a meeting in writing. State that you want to discuss workload and work conditions associated with a specific AI tool or process.
  2. Explain the before-and-after change. Give a period, task and measurable effect, such as additional review time, a faster queue target or work moving into unpaid hours.
  3. Show the work mechanism. Explain whether the system generates errors, ranks cases, sets a pace, monitors activity or removes discretion. Separate what you observed from what you infer.
  4. Describe the risk. Connect the change to fatigue, stress, missed breaks, quality failures, customer harm or physical safety.
  5. Ask for specific controls. Options include a workload and safety assessment, human override, slower targets, staffing, training, a pilot pause, audit of error rates or a review of monitoring rules.
  6. Set a response date. Ask who owns the review, what information will be considered and when you will receive the outcome.
  7. Confirm the discussion. Send a neutral follow-up summarizing the facts, requested action and any agreed interim measure.

A concise script

“Since the scheduling tool began assigning cases, my daily queue has risen from [baseline] to [current level]. I spend about [time] checking incorrect recommendations, which is pushing work past my shift and reducing breaks. The current pace creates a quality and fatigue risk. I am asking for a workload assessment with worker input, temporary targets that allow verification, and a written response by [date].”

How should I raise a health, stress or safety risk?

Treat an AI-driven workload change as a work-design hazard, not only as a technology complaint. Safe Work Australia advises employers to identify hazards, assess risks, control risks and monitor those controls in consultation with workers and their representatives. It also notes that “Workers often have a good idea of what would control the risks for them.”

Ask for a documented risk process

  • Have the employer identify the system’s demands, including pace, alerts, surveillance, error correction and staffing assumptions.
  • Assess who is exposed, how often and how severe the consequences could be, including psychological risks.
  • Choose controls, such as realistic production targets, additional staff, breaks, training, ergonomic changes, human review or a fallback process when the system fails.
  • Set a monitoring plan with measures workers can see, such as overtime, break compliance, error rework, incidents and absence.
  • Reassess after a pilot or system update; a control that works for one team may fail when volume or model behavior changes.

In the United Kingdom, the Health and Safety Executive’s Management Standards treat workload as part of the “Demands” standard and say “systems are in place locally to respond to any individual concerns.” This is a UK framework, not a universal legal rule, but it illustrates why an individual report should receive a local response rather than disappear into a general technology policy.

Can I challenge an AI decision about my work?

First identify whether the system merely assists a human or makes a decision without meaningful human involvement. A recommendation that a manager independently reviews is different from an automated score that determines scheduling, discipline, pay or access to work.

Ask the employer to identify the data used, the purpose, the decision-maker, the review process and how to correct inaccurate information. Request human intervention and a chance to explain relevant circumstances. Keep the request focused on the particular decision and its effect; a general demand to reveal proprietary source code may not be necessary to obtain a review.

For relevant solely automated decisions based on worker monitoring, UK Information Commissioner’s Office guidance says organizations should inform workers and offer simple ways to request human intervention or challenge a decision. The ICO page warns that this guidance is under review after changes made by the Data (Use and Access) Act, so verify the current UK position before relying on it. The guidance does not guarantee that every AI-assisted workplace decision can be challenged under the same rules.

Outside the UK, privacy and employment protections differ. A privacy complaint may address monitoring or inaccurate data, while a labor or discrimination process may be needed for the employment outcome itself. Ask a local union, worker adviser or regulator which route covers your facts.

What if my manager ignores the concern or the channel feels unsafe?

Escalate in a controlled sequence and preserve evidence. You do not have to use a direct manager if that person controls the disputed system, is involved in the conduct or cannot protect confidentiality.

  1. Review the employer’s health and safety, grievance, whistleblowing, privacy and anti-retaliation policies for the correct contact and deadlines.
  2. Send a factual escalation to HR, a safety representative, an ethics office or a union representative, attaching your dated summary and the earlier response.
  3. Ask what confidentiality applies, who will see your information and how retaliation concerns will be handled.
  4. If several workers are affected, invite a representative to present aggregated evidence without exposing individual medical or customer information.
  5. Where internal routes are unavailable or ineffective, contact the relevant labor, workplace-safety or privacy authority for your location. Explain the issue, the steps already taken and any imminent risk.

Do not secretly record meetings, remove protected data or breach security rules unless local advice confirms it is lawful. If there is an immediate danger, follow the workplace emergency and safety procedure first.

How can I make the complaint accessible and more likely to get a response?

Accessible feedback is part of responsible AI governance. The Australian National AI Centre recommends processes that let affected people give feedback, ask questions, challenge decisions and receive responses easily and safely, while accounting for accessibility and different levels of AI familiarity.

  • Provide interpretation, disability accommodations or a representative at meetings where available.
  • Submit one issue per record when possible, with a clear subject, requested remedy and response date.
  • Ask for an interim safeguard while the review is pending, such as manual verification or relief from an unsafe target.
  • Request the outcome and reasons in writing, including what data or metrics were considered.

If the response is only a generic statement that “the algorithm is correct,” ask which human reviewed your evidence and what test was applied. A process that accepts complaints but provides no accountable owner or answer is not a meaningful review channel.

What do current figures say about algorithmic-management concerns?

OECD findings published in 2025 show why workers may encounter these issues, while also showing the limits of the data. Among managers using algorithmic-management tools, nearly two-thirds reported at least one concern. The survey is a manager report in the countries and sample covered by that study, not a prevalence estimate for all workers.

Reported concern among managers using algorithmic management Share How to interpret it
Unclear accountability when a decision is wrong 28% Managers reported uncertainty about responsibility; it does not measure legal liability.
Unable to follow the logic of algorithmic decisions or recommendations 27% Reported lack of explainability, not proof that every system is technically opaque.
Inadequate protection of workers’ physical and mental health 27% A manager-reported governance concern, not a clinical measure of harm.

Nearly 90% of those managers said their firms had at least one governance measure, such as risk assessments, audits, guidelines, complaint channels or worker consultation. Almost two-thirds reported worker consultation. The OECD notes that more research is needed on whether these measures are effective, so the existence of a channel does not show that it is safe, independent or responsive.

Singapore’s Ministry of Manpower said in 2026 that it conducts a quarterly AI survey to understand effects on workload and working hours. It also said voluntary iWorkHealth data are not sufficiently representative to assess Singapore-wide effects. Treat such figures as a reason to ask for local evidence, not as proof that your employer or country has the same outcome.

What should I ask for after reporting?

End your report with an outcome that can be checked. Depending on the facts, request a pause or adjustment to the target, a human review of consequential decisions, corrected data, extra staffing or training, a safety assessment, and a date for checking whether the control worked. Ask who is accountable for each action and how workers can appeal the result.

Keep a private timeline of reports, responses, schedule changes and any retaliation you believe followed. Store it lawfully and separately from confidential employer or customer information. That record helps a representative or authority distinguish a one-time implementation problem from a continuing risk.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I refuse to use an AI tool that I believe is unsafe?

Do not assume that refusal is protected everywhere. Report the specific danger through the emergency or safety procedure, ask for an interim safe method, and obtain advice from a health and safety representative, union or local authority before refusing ordinary work; rules differ by jurisdiction.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Should I collect screenshots or performance records before complaining?

Keep only records you are allowed to possess, such as your schedules, targets, training instructions and your own contemporaneous notes. Remove customer, patient and trade-secret information, and ask a representative how to preserve evidence safely if access is restricted.

What if the AI system is supplied by an outside vendor?

Your employer remains the practical starting point because it sets your work and can provide a remedy, even when a vendor operates the tool. Ask the employer to obtain vendor information, document the control it will apply and explain how you can challenge an outcome.

Can coworkers submit one complaint together?

A joint, anonymized report can show a pattern in pace, overtime or errors without exposing every person’s details. Check your policy and local law, and consider having a union or worker representative submit it so participation and confidentiality are handled appropriately.
