Buckshot Roulette is a game of tracking shell counts and choosing when to take a risk. You act first after each load, and firing a blank at yourself gives you another action. A live shell costs health, while firing at The Dealer always ends your turn—even if the shell is blank. The central decision is whether an extra action is worth risking damage when you do not know what is chambered.
The rules below describe the standard single-player mechanics documented in a community guide labeled v1.2.1. That guide may not reflect every later build or multiplayer configuration, so treat its specific numbers as standard-mode reference points, not guarantees for every version. The developer describes the game as a tabletop-horror take on Russian roulette using a 12-gauge pump-action shotgun.

How does a turn work in Buckshot Roulette?
After The Dealer loads the shotgun, you take the first turn. You may use available items before choosing a target, then fire the chambered shell either at yourself or at The Dealer. Your target choice matters as much as the shell: only a blank fired at yourself preserves your turn.
What happens after each shot?
- You shoot yourself with a blank: You take no damage and immediately get another action. You can use items and choose a target again; this repeat can continue while blanks remain.
- You shoot yourself with a live shell: You take damage and your turn ends.
- You shoot The Dealer: Your turn ends whether the shell is live or blank. A blank does not pass the action back to you.
The Dealer follows the same basic firing rules. The advantage you have at the start of a load is that you act first, so your opening decision can influence which shells remain and who has to make the next uncertain choice.

What is the difference between live and blank shells?
A live shell deals one point of damage to the person it hits; a blank deals no damage. In the documented standard rules, a load contains between two and eight shells, with at least one live shell and one blank. Their types are shown before they are loaded, but their order in the shotgun is randomized.
Live shells appear red, or white with color-blind mode enabled. Blanks appear blue, or dark gray in color-blind mode. The visible colors identify shell type when it is revealed; they do not tell you the order of the hidden shells.

If you know that two live shells and one blank remain, for example, an unknown chamber is more likely live than blank—but the count alone cannot tell you which type is next. Each fired or ejected shell changes those remaining counts. Information items can resolve part of the uncertainty, while an inverter can change what the counts mean.
How does the shotgun mechanic create the main risk?
The shotgun is loaded with a hidden sequence of live and blank shells, and the current chamber advances as shells are fired or ejected. Because a self-fired blank grants another action, you may want to shoot yourself when the chamber could be blank. But if it is live, you lose health and end your turn. Shooting The Dealer avoids self-inflicted damage, but gives up the chance to continue acting on a blank.

That makes each choice a trade-off, not a simple “safe” or “unsafe” move. If the current shell is known to be blank, shooting yourself lets you keep acting; directing that blank at The Dealer ends your turn without damage. If it is known to be live, shooting The Dealer deals damage to them, while shooting yourself costs you health. When it is unknown, the remaining shell counts provide odds, not a guaranteed answer.
Some items change the calculation without changing the basic firing rules. A magnifying glass identifies the current chamber, beer removes it without firing, and a burner phone can reveal a future shell. A handsaw increases damage only for the current chambered shell, while an inverter changes that shell’s type. After using an item that removes or changes a shell, update your count and sequence reasoning before acting.
What do the standard items do?
The standard item set supports five kinds of decisions: restoring health, revealing information, controlling turns, removing a shell, and increasing damage. Items can be used before you choose a target. The v1.2.1 mechanics guide describes an item phase with two to five items and eight item slots per player; these counts are guide-documented standard figures, not a claim about every later mode or configuration.

Information, tempo, and damage are different kinds of leverage. A magnifying glass tells you what is in the chamber; beer also removes that shell from play. Handcuffs affect who acts next, while the handsaw only changes the damage from the current live shell. These effects are not interchangeable, so consider whether the current uncertainty, turn order, or possible damage is the problem you need to address.

What extra items appear in Double or Nothing?
Double or Nothing adds four items that let you manipulate health, inventory, and shell information. The effects documented in the guide are:

These items expand the same decision loop rather than replacing it. A burner phone gives information about a later position, while an inverter changes the immediate risk. Adrenaline can turn an opponent’s item into your action, and expired medicine trades uncertainty about shells for uncertainty about health.
What happens when the shotgun is empty, and how do you win?
Play continues until the shotgun is empty or one player reaches zero health. When the load is emptied, the game begins another item phase and shell-loading phase; it skips the new-round health allocation. When someone loses all health, that round ends.
In standard mode, beating The Dealer advances you to another round. The standard game objective is to defeat The Dealer in three consecutive rounds. The rules reference describes standard-round health allocation as two to four health points, but that figure belongs to its documented standard presentation and should not be assumed for customized multiplayer settings.

Double or Nothing changes the progression: rather than ending after the standard three-round objective, it proceeds through endless blocks of three rounds, with randomized health, item, and shell counts. Since the composition and sequence vary, the useful skill is maintaining an accurate count and adapting to what each load and item phase gives you, not memorizing a fixed shell order.
Do multiplayer games use the same rules?
Not necessarily. The Steam edition includes online player-versus-player multiplayer, and the later multiplayer update added host controls for health, shell sequences, item counts, and which items are available. A host can therefore set up a match that differs from the default single-player rules described above.
