Generative AI is most useful to attackers as an accelerator, not a magic autonomous hacker. It can quickly research people and organizations, draft and translate convincing messages, create synthetic photos and documents, clone voices, generate video, explain code, and help adapt existing malware. Those capabilities make fraud, impersonation, reconnaissance, and high-volume social engineering more believable and less expensive.
Current reporting from the FBI, Google, Microsoft, and Mandiant shows that most observed activity augments conventional criminal or state-backed operations. Models still make factual and coding errors, can refuse or derail requests, do not provide victims or infrastructure by themselves, and cannot reliably complete an intrusion without people and ordinary tools. Understanding that boundary helps you recognize realistic threats without assuming every incident was an “AI hack.”

It compresses work that once required time, language skill, specialist knowledge, or a large staff. An operator can ask a model to summarize a target’s public biography, explain a technical document, produce several versions of a payment request, translate each version, and keep a victim engaged in a chat. Image, audio, and video generators extend the deception beyond written text.
The FBI warned on December 3, 2024, that criminals use generative AI to commit fraud “on a larger scale,” increasing the believability of their schemes. Google Cloud and Mandiant wrote in August 2023 that adoption in intrusion operations remained limited and was primarily related to social engineering. Google’s 2024 threat-intelligence reporting likewise found that actors mainly used AI for research, code troubleshooting, and creating or localizing content.

That distinction matters. “AI-assisted phishing campaign” accurately describes a model drafting messages for a human-controlled operation. “AI hacked the bank” implies autonomous discovery, exploitation, persistence, and impact that the available evidence generally does not establish.
How do attackers use generative AI across an operation?
Attackers can apply models at several stages, but the model normally supplies suggestions or content while a person chooses targets, runs tools, and decides what to send.

Reconnaissance and preparation
Large language models can summarize public web pages, filings, conference biographies, job advertisements, technical manuals, and social-media posts. They can identify likely reporting lines, vendors, professional relationships, local terminology, and events that make a pretext sound timely. Microsoft has reported activity associated with known state-backed groups in which LLMs were explored for research and operational support; Google reporting describes similar information-gathering and target-research uses.
A model does not magically obtain private records. It works from material the operator supplies or can access through ordinary browsing and data tools, and it may confidently invent details. A careful attacker therefore verifies useful facts before using them, while a careless one leaves obvious inconsistencies defenders can exploit.
Social engineering, phishing, and fraud
Models can produce polished spear-phishing messages, business-email-compromise requests, romance and confidence-scam conversations, investment pitches, and extortion scripts. They can generate many variants for different departments, adjust the tone to imitate an executive, and translate the text into languages an operator cannot write. Grammar and spelling errors that once exposed overseas campaigns are less dependable warning signs.
Fraudulent websites may include an AI chatbot that answers objections, asks follow-up questions, and keeps a visitor moving toward a credential form, payment page, or malicious download. The chatbot does not need to be technically sophisticated: its value is maintaining attention while a human-controlled campaign handles the underlying theft.

Voice-cloning systems can imitate a relative, manager, public official, or business partner from a short audio sample. Synthetic video can place a trusted person in a recorded message or live-looking interaction. The FBI has specifically documented romance, investment, business, extortion, and payment scams that use combinations of synthetic text, images, audio, and video.
Code, vulnerabilities, and malware workflows
Threat actors ask models to explain unfamiliar code, troubleshoot errors, rewrite publicly available malware, add functions, or summarize vulnerability research. These are productivity gains: a person with partial knowledge can iterate faster or understand a tool they did not write.
Google’s observed 2023–2024 activity generally delivered that kind of assistance rather than an original capability. Basic jailbreak attempts cited in the same reporting were often unsuccessful. A February 2026 Google update describes broader malware-development activity and experimentation with AI-enabled malware, indicating that the boundary is moving, but it does not turn model output into a dependable, hands-off intrusion.
Attacks on AI systems and model extraction
Using a model in an operation is different from attacking the model or its surrounding service. Google DeepMind separates exploitation of a model’s capabilities from compromise of AI systems themselves. Google Threat Intelligence’s 2026 update reported frequent model-extraction attacks against private-sector entities, while saying it had not observed direct attacks on frontier models by advanced persistent threat actors during that reporting period.
Model extraction can involve repeatedly querying a private system to reproduce aspects of its behavior or training data. It is a security problem for the AI service owner, not proof that a criminal chatbot autonomously broke into unrelated networks.
Which attacker uses are most effective?
The practical risk is highest where convincing communication and rapid repetition matter more than novel technical exploitation.
| Use case | Typical output | Human involvement | What the evidence supports |
|---|---|---|---|
| Reconnaissance | Summaries, translations, relationship maps, target profiles | Human selects sources and validates facts | Observed as research and operational support |
| Phishing and fraud | Email, chat scripts, landing-page copy, multilingual variants | Human chooses victims, delivery channels, and timing | Strong evidence of higher scale and believability |
| Impersonation | Profile images, documents, cloned voice, synthetic video | Human supplies identity narrative and conducts the interaction | Documented in romance, investment, payment, and extortion scams |
| Malware assistance | Code explanations, rewrites, troubleshooting, added functions | Human tests, edits, and deploys code | Productivity gains; limited evidence of wholly novel autonomy |
| AI-service attacks | Repeated queries or extraction attempts | Human or scripted automation runs the queries | Model-extraction activity reported; frontier-model compromise not observed in the cited period |
Use five questions to evaluate any claimed AI attack: What output modality was involved (text, image, audio, video, or code)? Which attack stage did it affect? Was it human-directed or agentic automation? Did it increase scale or personalization? Is there evidence of a genuinely new capability, or simply faster execution of a known technique?

Can generative AI write malware?
It can explain, modify, and sometimes generate code that an attacker may use, but “can write malware” is not the same as “can independently create a reliable campaign.” Models can produce syntactic mistakes, unsafe assumptions, missing dependencies, and code that does not work in the target environment. An operator must test, debug, integrate, deliver, and operate the result.
Models can also help defenders and researchers analyze code, so the same capability is not inherently criminal. The meaningful question is whether an actor used generated code in a specific incident and what human and conventional tooling surrounded it. Avoid attributing an intrusion to AI unless the incident evidence documents that mechanism.
Are AI-generated phishing messages harder to spot?
Often, yes: fluent grammar, natural translations, and tailored details remove several traditional clues. That does not make the message trustworthy. AI can still invent names, use the wrong organizational process, create urgency, or point to a look-alike domain.
Signals that remain useful
- An unexpected request to pay, reset credentials, disclose a code, or keep a transaction secret.
- A destination domain that differs by a character, subdomain, or top-level domain from the known service.
- Pressure to bypass established approval, dual-control, or vendor-verification procedures.
- Conversation that begins with a familiar style but suddenly changes payment details or contact channels.
- Attachments or links that require enabling macros, installing software, or signing in again.
Do not treat awkward wording as a required warning sign. Treat the requested action and the verification path as the primary evidence.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesHow do deepfake voice and video scams work?
An attacker first obtains audio, photographs, or video from public posts, interviews, voicemail, or previous conversations. A generator then synthesizes a voice or face that can deliver a prepared script, answer basic questions, or appear in a video call. The criminal pairs that media with a plausible scenario: a family emergency, an executive payment request, a supplier change, or an official announcement.
Because synthesis can be convincing in real time, visual or vocal familiarity is no longer proof of identity or authorization. A pause, unusual lighting, lip-sync error, or unnatural phrasing may be a clue, but its absence proves nothing. Verification must happen through a separate channel that the caller did not provide.
What can generative AI not reliably do?
Current evidence supports important limits:
- It does not guarantee truth. Models can fabricate people, events, citations, code behavior, and technical explanations.
- It does not evade every safety control. Google’s cited testing found basic jailbreak attempts that failed, although controls and models continue to change.
- It does not replace access. A model still needs a delivery channel, credentials, infrastructure, a vulnerable service, or a person willing to act.
- It does not independently complete most intrusions. Human direction and conventional tools remain central to target selection, exploitation, persistence, and monetization.
- It does not make every campaign novel. Most publicly observed use has augmented established social-engineering, research, coding, or malware workflows.
These are boundaries, not guarantees of safety. A limited capability can still produce serious harm when it removes language barriers, lowers cost, or lets one operator contact thousands of people.

How should you verify an AI-assisted request?
Use a procedure that assumes text, voice, images, and video can all be fabricated.
- Pause. Do not let urgency, secrecy, or an emotional story set the timetable for payment or disclosure.
- Inspect the destination. Open the organization’s known site or app yourself rather than following the supplied link; check the complete domain before signing in.
- Use an independent channel. Call a known number from your address book, an official directory, or a previously verified contract. Do not call a number or use a meeting link introduced in the suspicious message.
- Apply established approvals. Require the normal purchase order, callback, multi-person payment approval, or credential-reset process even when the requester appears to be a senior executive.
- Confirm the exact change. Read back the account number, wallet address, beneficiary, or requested permission using a trusted channel.
- Report and preserve evidence. Keep the original message, headers, phone number, URLs, payment instructions, and timestamps for your bank, platform, security team, or law enforcement.
For businesses, written policies should explicitly say that a familiar voice or video call cannot override separation of duties. Train staff on the verification process, not on guessing whether a face or sentence “looks AI-generated.”
How can defenders detect and disrupt AI-assisted campaigns?
Detection works best when it combines content clues with account, network, and process signals. A polished message from a newly registered domain, a sudden change in a supplier’s bank details, or a login followed by an unusual forwarding rule is more informative than a stylistic judgment.
Technical and operational controls
- Enforce multifactor authentication resistant to phishing where possible, and require reauthentication for sensitive changes.
- Use email authentication, domain monitoring, and look-alike-domain alerts to reduce spoofing and impersonation.
- Limit external file sharing and protect identity-document repositories from unnecessary exposure.
- Log unusual help-desk requests, mailbox-rule creation, payment-beneficiary changes, and bulk outbound messaging.
- Separate model experimentation from production secrets; do not paste credentials, private source code, customer records, or incident data into an unapproved service.
- Teach employees to report suspicious content even when they already clicked, replied, or paid; rapid notification can enable recall and account containment.
Attackers can make operational mistakes while asking models for help. Google reporting notes that AI-assisted actors may expose code, infrastructure details, or secrets in those interactions, creating opportunities for defenders to connect campaigns and block them.
How much of cybercrime uses generative AI?
No authoritative source cited here provides a defensible percentage for the share of all cyberattacks involving generative AI. Public reporting is a collection of observed cases and threat-intelligence findings, not a census of global crime. Claims that a precise fraction of attacks is “AI-powered” should therefore be treated skeptically unless they define the population, date range, geography, and measurement method.
Google DeepMind reviewed nearly 200 media reports of public generative-AI misuse published from January 2023 through March 2024. That count demonstrates breadth of documented incidents, not the prevalence of AI in all attacks.
What should “AI attack” mean in an incident report?
Describe the mechanism precisely: “The actor used a language model to translate and personalize phishing messages,” “synthetic audio was used to impersonate the finance director,” or “a model assisted with troubleshooting publicly available malware.” Record the model or service only when evidence identifies it, and distinguish generated content from the delivery system and human decisions.
Best Value
This vocabulary prevents two errors: overstating ordinary automation as a revolutionary autonomous attack, and underestimating a conventional fraud campaign whose scale and believability were materially improved by generation. Actor behavior and model capabilities change quickly, so incident descriptions should include dates and be revisited as new evidence emerges.
What is the practical risk over the next few years?
The near-term risk is a larger volume of more convincing fraud, better localization, and easier impersonation across text, image, audio, and video. As models become more capable and attackers connect them to agents and ordinary criminal infrastructure, technical workflows may become more automated. The available evidence still supports a cautious conclusion: capability is expanding, but dependable end-to-end autonomy and wholly novel intrusion methods have not been demonstrated consistently in the cited observations.
Organizations and individuals do not need to identify the model to stay safe. They need independent verification, strong authentication, approval controls, careful handling of secrets, and a reporting path that works under pressure.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can an AI detector tell whether a message is a scam?
Not reliably. Detection tools can produce false positives and false negatives, and attackers can edit generated text; verify the sender, domain, requested action, and payment or credential workflow instead.
Should a company ban employees from using public AI services?
A blanket ban may drive unsanctioned use. A better policy defines approved services, prohibits entering secrets and personal data, records permitted uses, and provides a secure internal option for sensitive work.
Does a deepfake always contain visible glitches?
No. High-quality synthesis may have no obvious artifact, especially in short clips or noisy calls. Treat unexpected requests as unverified until confirmed through a separate trusted channel.

What should I do after sending money to an AI-assisted scammer?
Contact your bank or payment provider immediately and ask whether the transfer can be recalled or frozen. Preserve messages, numbers, account details, and timestamps, then report the incident to the relevant platform and law-enforcement service.
