BAFTA Games Awards judging is a staged process rather than one universal ballot. In the 2027 cycle, approximately 1,700 games-industry BAFTA members create category longlists. Best Game, British Game and Evolving Game then stay with the full games-voting membership for both nominations and the winner; most other categories move to specialist juries that play the longlisted titles, select six nominees and choose a winner.
BAFTA authenticates voting through appointed scrutineers. Jury winner ballots are blind, and BAFTA says decisions by the organisation and its juries are final. The exact categories, release windows and voting allocations can change when the Games Committee reviews the rules for a new cycle.

What happens when a game is entered?
A developer or publisher enters a game in the categories for which it is eligible. The entry is not simply a submission for a panel to watch: BAFTA expects voting members and jurors to have a practical opportunity to play the game.
Access for voting members
Entrants are encouraged to make games available through BAFTA bundles, supplied codes or a subscription service on which the game is available. This is intended to remove access barriers while leaving voters responsible for making their own assessment.

Copies for a jury
If a title reaches the jury stage, BAFTA can request up to 15 copies of each longlisted game for each category. Any additional hardware needed to run a title is the entrant’s responsibility. The number is a maximum request, not a promise that every jury will receive exactly 15 copies.
How is the BAFTA Games longlist created?
Round One is a member vote. The games-voting membership considers entries in each category, and the top ten entries become that category’s longlist under the 2027 rules.
Who votes in Round One?
The current rules describe an electorate of approximately 1,700 BAFTA members who are games-industry professionals. The figure is an approximate membership count, not a published turnout number or a guarantee that every member votes in every category.
When do specialist chapters control the vote?
Five areas use specialist chapters for the longlist vote:
- Artistic Achievement: the Art chapter
- Audio Achievement: the Audio chapter
- Game Design: the Design chapter
- Technical Achievement: the Technical chapter
- Performer in a Leading or Supporting Role: the Performance chapters
Members in the relevant chapter bring subject-specific experience to those first-round decisions. All games voters handle the other categories in the longlisting round.
Which BAFTA categories are decided by members all the way through?
For the 2027 cycle, Best Game, British Game and Evolving Game use a member-voted pathway after the longlist. Games-voting members choose the six nominees from the longlisted entries, then those members choose the winner from the nominees.

What changed for Evolving Game?
BAFTA’s 2027 announcement identifies Evolving Game as newly opened to member-wide voting in every round. That means it joins Best Game and British Game as a category in which the general games-voting membership, rather than a specialist jury, selects both the nominees and the winner.
What “member-voted” does not mean
It does not mean every BAFTA member votes in exactly the same way or that a public vote is involved. The electorate is BAFTA’s authenticated games-voting membership, and the process remains subject to the organisation’s eligibility and campaigning rules.
How do specialist juries choose nominees and winners?
Longlisted entries in the other categories move to a jury. Each jury has nine to twelve industry experts and is chaired by a BAFTA member or former member of the Games Committee.
Before the jury meeting
Jurors receive copies of the longlisted games so they can play them before the meeting. Playing the entries gives the panel a common basis for discussing design, craft, performance or technical achievement, depending on the category.

At the meeting
The jury discusses the longlist, agrees six nominees and selects the overall winner. The same panel therefore performs two decisions: narrowing the field and then choosing the winner from the resulting six.

| Category group | Longlist vote | Nomination and winner decision |
|---|---|---|
| Best Game, British Game, Evolving Game | All games-voting members | Members choose six nominees, then the winner |
| Artistic Achievement | Art chapter | Jury chooses six nominees and winner |
| Audio Achievement | Audio chapter | Jury chooses six nominees and winner |
| Game Design | Design chapter | Jury chooses six nominees and winner |
| Performer in a Leading or Supporting Role | Performance chapters | Jury chooses six nominees and winner |
| Technical Achievement | Technical chapter | Jury chooses six nominees and winner |
| Animation, Debut Game, Family, Game Beyond Entertainment, Multiplayer, Music, Narrative, New Intellectual Property | All games voters | Jury chooses six nominees and winner |
The table reflects the 2027 rules. BAFTA reviews the category list and voting allocation annually, so a later ceremony may not use the same map.

What are voters told to judge?
BAFTA’s campaigning guidance gives members one governing criterion: Excellence. Members are expected to play games in contention, apply their professional expertise and make a decision on that criterion rather than on a separate published scoring formula.
What entrants can and cannot assume
An entrant can provide access, context and campaign information permitted by BAFTA’s rules, but access does not transfer the decision to the entrant. The final judgement belongs to the relevant members or jury, and the rules do not publish a category-by-category weighting formula that would let a campaign predict the result mathematically.
How are BAFTA votes authenticated and kept confidential?
All voting is authenticated by BAFTA’s appointed scrutineers. Authentication is a control on the voting process; it does not turn the awards into a public poll or disclose how an individual member voted.
What does a blind jury winner vote mean?
BAFTA’s rules state that “The winner vote is undertaken as a blind vote within the jury.” In practical terms, winner information is withheld until the ceremony, so the result is not released to the jury as an identified outcome before the public announcement.
Are the reasons for a decision published?
BAFTA says decisions by BAFTA and its juries are final and that it will not correspond about why an entry was or was not nominated. The published rules therefore do not describe a post-vote explanation process for individual games.
Why can the process change from one year to the next?
BAFTA’s cross-industry Games Committee reviews eligibility, voting and campaigning rules every year. Release windows, category names, the chapters assigned to a first-round vote and the categories using member-wide voting are therefore cycle-specific details.

What the 2025 explanation shows
BAFTA’s 2025 explainer described members voting for Best Game and British Game nominations while specialist juries handled the other categories. The 2027 rules add a material difference by opening Evolving Game to member-wide voting across all rounds. Older descriptions should not be treated as a permanent constitutional rule for the awards.
Which document should a current entrant use?
Use the rules for the specific awards cycle in which the game is entered. A page describing a prior ceremony can explain the general shape of the process, but it may be wrong about the eligible release period, the category list or who controls a particular ballot.
What should a developer do to prepare an entry?
The process is easier to navigate when an entrant treats eligibility, access and category positioning as separate jobs.
- Confirm the cycle’s eligibility rules. Check the current year’s release window, platform requirements and category definitions before submitting an entry.
- Choose categories carefully. A title may be considered in more than one area, but each category asks voters to assess a different kind of excellence. Do not assume that a strong showing in one category automatically transfers to another.
- Plan access early. Prepare codes, bundle access or a supported subscription route so voting members can play the game without having to purchase it solely for consideration.
- Keep jury logistics in mind. If the game is longlisted in a jury category, be ready to supply the requested copies and any entrant-responsible hardware.
- Follow campaigning guidance. Campaign material should help voters understand the eligible work without implying that access or publicity guarantees a nomination.
- Track the published category map. The distinction between a member-voted category and a jury category affects who will make the next decision after the longlist.
How should you read a BAFTA longlist, nomination and win?
These labels describe different stages, not interchangeable forms of recognition. A longlist means the entry survived the first-round field of submissions. A nomination means it was one of six entries selected for the final category ballot. A win means the relevant member electorate or jury selected it from those nominees.

BAFTA publishes the approximate size of the games-voting membership, the usual jury size and the six-nominee structure. It does not publish a games-process turnout statistic or a weighting formula showing how much each ballot stage contributes numerically to the final result.

That distinction is important when interpreting claims about popularity or margins. The rules establish who is eligible to vote and how the stages are organised, but they do not provide enough public data to calculate participation rates or reconstruct a winner’s vote total.
What is the clearest summary of the 2027 process?
Enter the eligible game and make it playable. Approximately 1,700 games-industry members create ten-title longlists, with specialist chapters taking that first vote in five craft and performance areas. Best Game, British Game and Evolving Game stay with the membership for six nominations and the winner; the remaining categories go to nine-to-twelve-person juries that play, discuss, nominate six and choose a winner. Scrutineers authenticate the voting, the jury winner ballot is blind, and BAFTA treats the decisions as final.

How many games were considered for the 2026 BAFTA Games longlist?
BAFTA’s 2026 longlist announcement said 255 games were considered. That is a cycle-specific total for the pool considered that year, not a fixed annual quota or the number of games that will appear in every category.
Do BAFTA voters have to buy every game they judge?
No. BAFTA’s campaigning guidance says voters are not obliged to purchase a game for review. Entrants can provide codes, bundle access or access through an available subscription service so members can play the work without that purchase requirement.
Does BAFTA publish voter turnout or the vote-weighting formula?
No published BAFTA statistic establishes individual voter turnout for the games process, and the rules do not provide a numerical weighting formula for the stages. Public information identifies the electorate, chapters, juries and ballot sequence rather than vote totals or margins.
Can a developer appeal a BAFTA Games Awards decision?
The published rules do not set out an appeal route. BAFTA says its decisions and those of its juries are final and that it will not correspond about why an entry was or was not nominated.
