Yes. You can use Apple Music without installing the iPhone app. Open music.apple.com in a supported modern browser, choose Sign In in the lower-left corner, and use an Apple Account. Apple’s web player can play the Apple Music catalog and your music library, so the iPhone app is optional for normal browser listening.
A subscription unlocks full catalog streaming and subscriber features. Without one, a signed-in account can still play previews and, in Safari, Chrome, or Firefox, listen to Apple Music radio stations and Apple Music TV. The exact catalog, plans, stations, and features depend on your country or region.

Can I use Apple Music in a browser without the iPhone app?
Apple Music on the web is a browser client, not a companion screen for the iPhone app. Once you sign in, it can access the Apple Music catalog and the library associated with your Apple Account. You can search, play albums and songs, manage playlists, view lyrics, and control a queue from the browser.
Apple describes the service as ad-free and offering millions of songs, personalized recommendations, library access, lossless songs, exclusive video, and playlist creation for subscribers. “Millions of songs” is Apple’s qualitative description rather than a dated catalog count, and availability differs by market.

What you need
- A supported, up-to-date browser with JavaScript enabled.
- An Apple Account. You can create one during the sign-in process if you do not already have one.
- An Apple Music subscription for full on-demand catalog playback and subscriber-only features.
- Cookies or similar browser storage enabled if you want the site to retain sign-in and player state reliably.
How do I start Apple Music on the web?
The basic setup takes place entirely at music.apple.com; no iPhone app download is part of the workflow.
- Open
music.apple.comin your browser. - Select Sign In in the lower-left corner.
- Enter your Apple Account credentials, or choose the account-creation option if you need one.
- From Home, follow the prompts to subscribe if you want full catalog access.
- Use the navigation areas for Home, New, Made For You, Radio, Library, search, and playlists.
If you skip a subscription, the site does not become useless. You can search for tracks and listen to or watch previews. Apple also says a signed-in account, without an Apple Music subscription, can play Apple Music radio stations and Apple Music TV in Safari, Chrome, or Firefox.
What can I do in the browser player?
Play songs from your library
Open Library to browse Songs, Albums, and Playlists. Hover over an item and press Play. The player exposes the everyday controls most listeners need: queueing, shuffle, repeat, volume, sorting, and lyrics. Your browser session can therefore handle a normal listening session without switching to the native app.
Library access depends on the Apple Account you used to sign in. If the expected albums or playlists are absent, check that you did not authenticate with a different account; the web player cannot show another account’s library merely because both accounts are used on the same computer.
Discover recommendations and new releases
Home surfaces recently played material and personalized playlists. New organizes current releases, moods, and charts. Made For You presents listening-profile playlists after they have been added to your library. These areas are intended for discovery rather than manual file management, so what appears will change as your listening profile develops.
Listen to radio and Apple Music TV
Radio includes six named global stations listed by Apple: Apple Music 1, Apple Music Hits, Apple Music Country, Apple Music Club, Apple Música Uno, and Apple Music Chill. The service also offers genre stations and custom stations based on an artist, song, or genre.

Radio has a lower access threshold than the subscription catalog. Apple says you must be signed in to an Apple Account, but you do not need to subscribe to Apple Music to play its radio stations and Apple Music TV. The statement specifically names Safari, Chrome, and Firefox; if playback fails in another browser, testing one of those browsers is a sensible first check.
Create and edit playlists
The web interface can create a playlist, rename it, edit its contents, add tracks, and delete it. Those controls cover ordinary personal playlist maintenance from a laptop or desktop browser.
Apple separates some advanced functions from the web experience. Certain collaborative-playlist changes and advanced Smart Playlist or Genius Playlist features require the Music app. If a control is missing while you edit a playlist, that is usually a product boundary rather than a browser setting you can unlock.
Use lyrics and playback controls
Lyrics, queue management, shuffle, repeat, sorting, and volume controls are part of Apple’s web-player feature set. Queueing is useful when you want to assemble a one-off listening order without changing a saved playlist; shuffle and repeat change how the current queue behaves.

“Without the app” means that browser playback and most everyday library, discovery, radio, and playlist work can happen on the web. It does not mean the browser reproduces every Music-app workflow.
- Some collaborative-playlist changes remain app-dependent.
- Smart Playlist and Genius Playlist functions identified by Apple require the Music app.
- Features and content can vary by country or region, so an app installation would not necessarily make an unavailable local offering appear.
The distinction matters if you are choosing a browser for convenience rather than replacing every part of Apple’s native software. For listening, searching, queueing, and basic playlist edits, the browser is the practical substitute. For the app-only playlist tools above, you still need the Music app on a supported device.

How does the web player compare with the native Music app?
The browser and app share an Apple Music account and library, but they differ in setup and feature depth. This comparison uses the capabilities Apple documents for the web player and the specific app-only exceptions it names.
| Aspect | Apple Music on the web | Native Music app |
|---|---|---|
| Access requirement | Supported browser plus an Apple Account; no app installation | Music app installed on a supported device, with an Apple Account for account features |
| Full catalog playback | Requires an Apple Music subscription | Requires an Apple Music subscription |
| Previews and free programming | Previews are available without subscribing; signed-in users can play Apple Music radio and Apple Music TV in Safari, Chrome, or Firefox | Availability follows Apple’s app and regional rules |
| Library and basic playback | Songs, Albums, Playlists, queue, shuffle, repeat, sorting, volume, and lyrics | Native playback and library tools, plus the app’s broader feature set |
| Playlist editing | Create, rename, edit, add to, and delete playlists | Includes the app-dependent collaborative, Smart Playlist, and Genius Playlist workflows Apple identifies |
| Portability | Works on devices where a supported browser is available | Depends on a device that supports the Music app |
| Sign-in and state | Uses cookies or similar local storage; disabling them can affect sign-in and operation | Uses the operating system and app account state rather than browser storage |
For a shared or work computer, the browser avoids installing software. For advanced playlist automation or the app-only functions, the native application remains necessary.
How is browser playback implemented for websites?
Apple’s MusicKit documentation describes the technology behind sites that embed or customize Apple Music playback. MusicKit can play Apple Music and a user’s local library from an app or website after the user grants permission. MusicKit on the Web provides Web Components or a JavaScript-customized player that can stream songs, music videos, and radio.
This developer layer is different from visiting music.apple.com. An ordinary listener does not need to install a library, write JavaScript, or configure Web Components; the Apple Music site already supplies the player. A developer who embeds playback must design an authorization flow and request permission before content can play.
What browser storage and privacy behavior should I expect?
Apple says the web player may use cookies or similar local storage in your browser profile. Those data help the site maintain state, including staying signed in. If you block or routinely clear them, you may be asked to authenticate again and some player behavior can be disrupted.
For embedded MusicKit players, Apple describes short-lived identifiers that reset after one day, the embedding domain, browser and device information, truncated-IP general geography, and playback or interaction data. When a signed-in user interacts with an embedded player, that activity can be associated with the Apple Account for personalization and obligations to strategic partners.

These details apply to the browser profile and the particular site where playback occurs. A privacy setting that blocks all cookies or storage can therefore have a functional effect, not just a tracking effect.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why are some songs, stations, or features missing?
Check your country or region
Apple warns that not all features and content are available in every country or region. Subscription availability, catalog titles, radio stations, plans, and other functions can differ by market. A title or station missing from the web player may reflect regional rights rather than a problem with your browser.
Check the account and subscription state
Full catalog playback is tied to an Apple Music subscription, while previews and the specified radio and television streams can work with only an Apple Account. Confirm that you are signed in to the account that owns the subscription or library you expect to use.
Check storage and the browser
If the site repeatedly signs you out or playback controls behave unpredictably, allow cookies or equivalent local storage for the player and retry in a current browser. For free radio and Apple Music TV, Apple specifically names Safari, Chrome, and Firefox, making one of those browsers a useful compatibility test.

If the missing option concerns a collaborative playlist change, Smart Playlist, or Genius Playlist, Apple’s documented requirement is the Music app. Installing or switching browsers will not add those controls to the web interface.
Is the web player enough for most listeners?
It is enough when your priority is browser-based access to a subscribed catalog or library, with search, recommendations, radio, playlists, queueing, lyrics, and standard playback controls. It is also the simplest route for preview listening and the specified free radio and television streams because it avoids an app installation.
Best Value
Choose the native Music app when you specifically need Apple’s app-only collaborative, Smart Playlist, or Genius Playlist workflows. The deciding factor is feature depth, not whether an iPhone app is required for ordinary listening: it is not.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I clear my browser data without losing my Apple Music library?
Clearing cookies or local storage does not delete the library stored with your Apple Account, but it can remove the browser’s sign-in and player state. Afterward, return to music.apple.com and sign in again; the account determines which library and subscription the site loads.
Why can I hear a radio station but not play an album on demand?
Apple separates free programming from the subscription catalog. A signed-in account can play the documented radio stations and Apple Music TV without subscribing, while unrestricted album and song playback requires an Apple Music subscription.
Can a website play Apple Music without sending me to music.apple.com?
Yes, a developer can use MusicKit on the Web to stream songs, music videos, and radio through Web Components or a JavaScript-customized player. The listener must grant permission, and the site then operates under Apple’s embedded-player privacy and account rules.
Why does a playlist look different in the browser than in the Music app?
The web interface supports ordinary creation and editing, but Apple reserves some collaborative-playlist changes and Smart Playlist or Genius Playlist functions for the Music app. A difference in available controls can therefore be intentional rather than a synchronization failure.
