Windows Security can scan for and help remove a remote-access trojan (RAT), but it is not the same thing as enterprise endpoint detection and response (EDR). Microsoft Defender Antivirus is Windows’ built-in prevention and malware-remediation engine; Windows Security is the interface for configuring it and starting scans. EDR adds continuous endpoint telemetry, investigation, threat hunting, alerting, and response actions such as isolating a device. These layers address different parts of a RAT incident, and none guarantees that every RAT will be found.

What is a RAT, and why can it be difficult to detect?

A remote-access trojan is malware that gives an attacker remote access to and control of a device. A RAT can arrive as an executable, run through a script, or operate as part of a fileless sequence. It can also misuse legitimate remote-access software, which complicates detection: the tool itself may have valid business uses, while its installation, persistence, connections, or behavior may be malicious.

Detection is therefore not just a question of whether a scanner recognizes a suspicious file. A RAT may leave clues across several events: an agent runs, establishes persistence, connects outward for an extended period, and launches an interactive shell or file manager. Seeing those clues together—and relating them across time and processes—can be more informative than inspecting one file in isolation.

MITRE ATT&CK describes the dual-use risk: an adversary may use legitimate remote-access tools to establish an interactive command-and-control channel within a network. That does not mean every remote-support application or connection is malicious. It means organizations need to distinguish expected, authorized use from suspicious context and behavior.

Can Windows Defender detect a RAT?

Yes. Microsoft Defender Antivirus can detect and block some RATs, including known malware and suspicious behavior, and Windows Security lets users run scans when they suspect a problem. Detection is not guaranteed: results depend on the RAT, its configuration, the protection settings in effect, and whether the attacker uses a custom payload or legitimate remote-access software.

Microsoft Defender Antivirus combines signatures and cloud reputation with machine learning, heuristics, anomaly detection, and behavior-based blocking. Those methods can catch a recognized malicious file or flag suspicious activity as it begins. Microsoft says Defender Antivirus can “block almost all malware at first sight, in milliseconds.” That is a Microsoft product statement, not an independent RAT-specific detection rate or a guarantee that a particular incident will be caught.

Windows Security is the user-facing Windows app, not a separate EDR service. It provides access to Microsoft Defender Antivirus settings and on-demand scan choices, including quick, full, custom, and Microsoft Defender Offline scans. A scan can help find malware on the device; the interface alone does not provide the centralized investigation and response workflow of an enterprise EDR deployment.

What is the difference between Windows Security and Microsoft Defender?

“Windows Security” and “Microsoft Defender” are often used loosely, but they refer to different pieces of the protection setup. Windows Security is the control surface; Microsoft Defender Antivirus is the built-in antivirus engine it can configure and use to scan and remediate threats.

  • Windows Security: The Windows app through which a user can view security controls and start scans.
  • Microsoft Defender Antivirus: The antivirus component that provides prevention, detection, scanning, and, when active, remediation.
  • Defender for Endpoint: Microsoft’s endpoint protection service for organizations, adding telemetry, alerting, investigation, hunting, and response capabilities to endpoint protection.

Having Windows Security on a PC does not by itself mean that the device is onboarded to an organization’s EDR service. Conversely, an EDR deployment is not merely a different button in the Windows Security app: it involves the service, device onboarding, appropriate licensing, management, and people or processes able to investigate alerts.

How do antivirus and EDR detect RATs differently?

Antivirus is primarily a prevention and remediation layer. EDR is designed to preserve and correlate information about what happens across the endpoint over time, so an organization can investigate suspicious activity and respond to it. They can complement each other, but they answer different questions.

Detection and response need Microsoft Defender Antivirus / consumer Windows setup EDR deployment such as Defender for Endpoint
Prevent or block a malicious file or behavior Core role: uses signatures, cloud reputation, heuristics, machine learning, anomaly detection, and behavior-based blocking. Can add endpoint signals and investigation context; antivirus remains a distinct protection component.
See activity across processes and time Scans files and can block suspicious behavior, but Windows Security alone is not a centralized investigation console. Continuously collects behavioral telemetry for investigation and correlation.
Review network and system activity Protection may block threats, but the consumer interface does not provide the described enterprise telemetry and hunting workflow. Microsoft documents process, network, kernel and memory-manager, logon, registry, and file-system information.
Search historical activity and hunt On-demand scans inspect the device; they are not advanced hunting across retained endpoint telemetry. Supports centralized alerting, investigation, and advanced hunting through collected telemetry.
Contain an endpoint or act on an alert Antivirus can remediate detected malware when operating in active mode. Response actions can include device isolation, stopping and quarantining a file, and collecting investigation data.
Deploy and manage protection Emphasizes built-in prevention and user-initiated scans on Windows. Requires an organizational EDR deployment, including onboarding and suitable service access.

The practical difference is visibility and response. If a RAT-like process starts, persists through an autorun or service, maintains a long-lived outbound connection, and launches shell or file-management processes, EDR can correlate those signals, alert an analyst, search backward through available telemetry, and support containment. Antivirus may block or remediate a malicious file or behavior, but a scan is not a substitute for that broader incident workflow.

What can Defender for Endpoint see and do?

Microsoft documents Defender for Endpoint telemetry that can include process information, network activity, kernel and memory-manager visibility, logon activity, registry changes, and file-system changes. Microsoft also documents six months of storage for this investigation data. That retention period describes the documented investigation data; it should not be taken to mean every signal is available in every deployment regardless of configuration or service conditions.

When suspicious activity is detected, an organization can use the service’s centralized alerts and investigation capabilities to examine related events, hunt through telemetry, and take response actions. These can include isolating the device, stopping and quarantining a file, or collecting investigation data. Such actions are operational tools for an authorized organization, not a guarantee that every RAT will generate an alert or be automatically removed.

EDR is especially useful when security staff need to understand what happened before and after an alert, whether other processes or devices were involved, and how to contain an incident. It does not make prevention irrelevant: the strongest approach layers real-time antivirus protection with monitoring and a response plan.

How do I run a scan if I suspect a RAT?

On Windows 10 or Windows 11, Windows Security provides quick, full, custom, and Defender Offline scan options. Use a full scan when you want Defender Antivirus to check the device more broadly; consider an offline scan if you suspect persistent malware that could hide while Windows is running.

  1. Open Windows Security and select Virus & threat protection.
  2. Under the current threats area, select Scan options.
  3. Choose Full scan for a broader scan of files and running programs, or Microsoft Defender Offline scan when persistence is a concern.
  4. Select Scan now. Save work first if choosing the offline scan: Windows restarts into the Windows Recovery Environment to run it.
  5. After the scan, review the result and any listed actions in Windows Security. If the device is managed by an organization, report the suspected incident to its security team rather than treating the scan result as a complete investigation.

An offline scan runs outside the normal Windows session, making it harder for persistent malware to hide while the scan runs. It can be a useful escalation when a normal scan does not resolve a concern, but it does not guarantee discovery of every RAT. A clean result is not proof that no compromise occurred, particularly when the suspected activity involves custom malware, scripts, or abuse of legitimate software.

What do active, passive, and disabled modes mean?

Microsoft Defender Antivirus can operate in active, passive, or disabled mode. The mode matters because installing another real-time antivirus or onboarding a device to Defender for Endpoint can change which component performs prevention and remediation.

  • Active mode: Defender Antivirus scans and remediates threats.
  • Passive mode: On a device onboarded to Defender for Endpoint, Defender Antivirus scans and reports, but does not remediate.
  • Disabled mode: Defender Antivirus neither scans nor remediates.

On a device with another real-time antivirus product, do not assume Defender Antivirus is still the active prevention engine. In an organization, EDR telemetry and response may remain available depending on licensing and onboarding, but that does not mean Defender Antivirus is actively remediating threats. Administrators should verify the actual device configuration and protection status rather than infer it from the presence of the Windows Security app.

How should an organization tune RAT detections?

Organizations should look for suspicious combinations of activity rather than block every remote-access tool indiscriminately. Legitimate support software may be authorized in one environment and unexpected in another, so detection rules need to account for approved tools, users, devices, and business context.

  • Review remote-access software that appears on endpoints, especially when its installation or use is unexpected.
  • Investigate persistence through services or autorun mechanisms when it coincides with suspicious execution.
  • Correlate long-lived outbound connections with the process making the connection and the user or device involved.
  • Examine unusual child processes, including interactive shells or file managers launched by a remote-control agent.
  • Allow documented legitimate support tools where appropriate, while monitoring for suspicious use rather than treating the tool’s presence as conclusive proof of an attack.

This approach reflects the difference between recognizing a tool and detecting its misuse. A policy that blocks every remote-support application can disrupt legitimate work; one that trusts every signed or familiar tool can miss an attacker using it as a command-and-control channel.

Is EDR better than antivirus for detecting RATs?

EDR is better suited to investigation, historical hunting, behavioral correlation, and containment across an organization. Antivirus is essential for preventing and remediating malware on the endpoint, but it does not by itself provide the same continuous, centralized incident-response workflow.

There is no authoritative, directly comparable RAT detection percentage established for consumer antivirus, Windows Security, and EDR. Results depend on the RAT family, configuration, available telemetry, and whether the attacker uses a custom payload or legitimate remote-access software. The useful comparison is therefore capability, not an unsupported universal detection score: antivirus helps stop threats; EDR helps teams see, investigate, and respond to activity that gets through or behaves suspiciously.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does a clean Defender Offline scan prove my PC is safe?

No scan result can certify that a device was never compromised. If suspicious access, account activity, or remote-control behavior continues, use a trusted device to change important credentials and contact your organization’s security team or a qualified incident responder.

Can a RAT use legitimate remote-access software instead of a trojan file?

Yes. Attackers may misuse legitimate remote-access tools, so the software’s name or valid purpose alone cannot establish whether its use is authorized. Context such as who launched it, how it persists, and what it connects to matters.

Does installing another antivirus automatically disable EDR?

Not necessarily. The antivirus component’s mode and the endpoint’s EDR onboarding and licensing are separate configuration considerations; verify both on the managed device instead of assuming one product’s presence tells you the status of the other.

Should I remove a RAT myself if Windows Security detects it?

For a personal, unmanaged device, follow the remediation action Windows Security presents and check the resulting status. On a work-managed device, alert IT or security staff promptly and avoid deleting evidence or resetting the system before they advise you.
